Stabilized Weak-Gradient Discontinuous Finite Elements With Optimal Error Estimates For Second-Order Elliptic Pdes, Aymen Laadhari
Stabilized Weak-Gradient Discontinuous Finite Elements With Optimal Error Estimates For Second-Order Elliptic Pdes, Aymen Laadhari
Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications
This work introduces an accurate finite element approach employing a new stabilized discrete weak gradient, designed for second-order elliptic problems on arbitrary conforming meshes. We formulate the approach within a discontinuous Galerkin framework and derive a consistent and coercive bilinear form. Appropriate error analysis on a model problem confirms optimal convergence. Building on the core analysis, we extend the method to more challenging settings, including time-dependent heterogeneous scenarios and a biophysically realistic optimal-control model of photobleaching in the budding yeast cell. We further illustrate the versatility of the weak-gradient construction by applying it to an unsteady level-set equation relevant to …

The increasing interest in coffee in all circles means that coffee production and quality must always increase due to consumer demands. One way to maintain the quality of coffee beans is by breaking them down using a huller machine. This research aims to improve the optimization of coffee machines by modifying the cylinder blades of huller machines with variations of 3, 4, 5, and 7 cylinder blades in terms of static loading design and quality and production capacity of coffee bean breaking. The experiment was carried out using 400 rpm and breaking 10kg of dry coffee cherries every time the …

Implementation Of A Least Squares Method To A Navier-Stokes Solver, Jada P. Lytch, Taylor Boatwright, Ja'nya Breeden
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The Navier-Stokes equations are used to model fluid flow. Examples include fluid structure interactions in the heart, climate and weather modeling, and flow simulations in computer gaming and entertainment. The equations date back to the 1800s, but research and development of numerical approximation algorithms continues to be an active area. To numerically solve the Navier-Stokes equations we implement a least squares finite element algorithm based on work by Roland Glowinski and colleagues. We use the deal.II academic library , the C++ language, and the Linux operating system to implement the solver. We investigate convergence rates and apply the least squares …

Analysis Of Strength Of Glass Fibre Composite Leaf Spring Using Finite Element Method, Andoko Andoko, Poppy Puspitasari, Avita Ayu Permanasari
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
Leaf spring, as one of the main components of the suspension system, serves the function of absorbing road shocks and any wheel vibrations, preventing them from being transmitted directly to the vehicle body. Moreover, it can increase the tire traction as well as support the weight of the vehicle and various kinds of external forces. Various studies on the use of composite materials for leaf springs have shown that the strength of composite leaf spring is similar to steel leaf spring with the same load carrying capacity. However, the composite leaf spring has the added advantage of being more lightweight. …

Finite Element Simulation Of Pzt-Aided Interrogation Of Composite Laminates Exhibiting Damage, Amany Micheal, Yehia Bahei-El-Din
Centre for Advanced Materials
Piezoelectricity has proved effective in capturing changes in structures caused by various damage mechanisms. In one approach, piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) are mounted on the surface of the host structure and utilized as both actuators and sensors to interrogate the structure and monitor its health. This is achieved by subjecting the PWAS to a transient electric pulse and reading the resulting voltage. Changes in the stiffness of the substrate due to structural damage affect the response of the PWAS, which could be correlated to integrity of the structure. Applying this technique to fibrous composite laminates encounters particular challenges due …
Solution Of Fully-Coupled Shallow Water Equations And Contaminant Transport Using A Primitive Variable Riemann Solver And A Semi-Discrete Supg Method, Faranak Behzadi
Solution Of Fully-Coupled Shallow Water Equations And Contaminant Transport Using A Primitive Variable Riemann Solver And A Semi-Discrete Supg Method, Faranak Behzadi
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In the present dissertation, a finite volume and a finite element model are developed and tuned for the solution of the fully-coupled two-dimensional Shallow Water and Contaminant transport Equations with arbitrary bed topography and wetting-drying fronts. A Riemann-solver finite volume scheme, using primitive variables rather than conserved variables, and a semi-discrete Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method in finite element context are applied to compare the performance of these two numerical models. The Riemann-solver scheme is based on the unstructured finite volume discretization using primitive-variable Roe-flux approximation with an entropy fix. Second-order accuracy in space and time, an implicit scheme based …

Ambient vibrations are major source of wasted energy, exploiting properly such vibration can be converted to valuable energy and harvested to power up devices, i.e. electronic devices. Accordingly, energy harvesting using smart structures with active piezoelectric ceramics has gained wide interest over the past few years as a method for converting such wasted energy. This paper provides numerical and experimental analysis of piezoelectric fiber based composites for energy harvesting applications proposing a multi-scale modeling approach coupled with experimental verification. The multi-scale approach suggested predicting the behavior of piezoelectric fiber-based composites use micromechanical model based on Transformation Field Analysis (TFA) to …

Ls-Dyna3d Modeling And Simulation For Uncontained Engine Debris Impact On Fuselage Skins, Robin Eileen Lawson
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Impact and penetration events for uncontained engine debris on fuselage skins are simulated using the LS-DYNA3D finite element analysis code. The LS-DYNA3D code is a nonlinear transient dynamic simulation tool with contact algorithms for impact. A finite element analysis is used to simulate the penetration of aluminum plates impacted by titanium impactors on aircraft-like skin panels. By gaining a more comprehensive understanding of this dynamic impact event, this work is meant to contribute to improving designs for damage tolerance and residual strength by providing modeling and analysis guidelines for the analyst.
Parametric studies are performed to determine the influence of …
Three-Dimensional Calculation Of Contaminant Transport In Groundwater At A Dover Afb Site, Tariq O. Hashim
Three-Dimensional Calculation Of Contaminant Transport In Groundwater At A Dover Afb Site, Tariq O. Hashim
Theses and Dissertations
Macroscale rate-limited sorption modeling was tested using a production transport code, the GMS/FEMWATER ground-water modeling package. The code (Version 1.1 of FEMWATER. dated 1 August 1995) was applied to a 3D conceptual model developed from a field site at Dover AFB, DE. A simulation was performed of a 200 hour contaminant injection pulse followed by clean water flushing. A moment analysis performed on the resulting breakthrough curve validated code self-consistency. Another injection pulse simulation showed that retardation temporally delays the breakthrough peak. Transport simulations of pulsed clean water pumping of the test cell with a prescribed initial contaminant distribution demonstrated …

Modeling And Simulation Of Load Introduction For Fuselage Crown Panel Testing, Kevin P. Belack
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This paper discusses the mechanism and behavior of load introduction to internally pressurized fuselage crown panels. Emphasis is placed on the finite element modeling of a simulated pressure-box test machine and representative fuselage crown panel. The geometry and mesh requirements for the finite element model are examined through numerical studies which gradually increase in complexity. These numerical studies culminate in the detailed specification of boundary conditions, mesh densities, load introduction mechanisms, element choice and solution process for the simulation of a pressure-box test machine and test panel.
The results obtained using the finite element model are then compared with experimental …
The Frontal Method For Finite Element Analysis On Ibm-3090 Vector Computer, Chaerul Kamal
The Frontal Method For Finite Element Analysis On Ibm-3090 Vector Computer, Chaerul Kamal
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this report, a Finite Element program based on the Frontal method was implemented on the IBM-3090 to exploit the vector capabilities offered by modern high performance vector computers. The overall computational speed for the Frontal Finite Element program was increased by 30% when the vector instructions were introduced. The Frontal solution for a system of simultaneous linear equations, however, has shown only minor improvement when vector instructions were used. More improvement in computational speed and memory storage can be expected by using the Parallel Frontal method with Substructures.
