Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have become a popular instrument for solving various real-world problems. DNNs’ sophisticated structure allows them to learn complex representations and features. However, architecture specifics and floating-point number usage result in increased computational operations complexity. For this reason, a more lightweight type of neural networks is widely used when it comes to edge devices, such as microcomputers or microcontrollers – Binary Neural Networks (BNNs). Like other DNNs, BNNs are vulnerable to adversarial attacks; even a small perturbation to the input set may lead to an errant output. An Automatic Target Detection (ATD) algorithm is capable of identifying the location of targets of interest captured by Infra-Red imagery in vastly different contexts. ATD is often a precursor in a 2-stage methodology in order to ascertain the location and nature of a target in both military and civilian applications. In order to train an ATD algorithm, a large amount of data from varied sources is required. While supervised optimization paradigms are ubiquitous across diverse recognition systems, the risk of over-fitting and increasing bias have limited their applicability.

This dissertation focuses on unsupervised learning—learning without precisely curated data—and argues that unsupervised learning methods can enable both discriminability and generalizability. Through the use of attention-based machine learning and advanced clustering, unsupervised methods are able to focus on fine-grained information in images without any explicit supervision. The dissertation introduces a domain-bridging framework for tasks like cross-spectrum matching and long-range recognition, utilizing intra-domain clustering and inter-domain matching to generate pseudo-labels. Segmenting and reconstructing cardiac anatomical structures from magnetic resonance (MR) images is essential for the quantitative measurement and automatic diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases [1]. However, manual evaluation of the time-series cardiac MRI (CMRI) obtained during routine clinical care are laborious, inefficient, and tends to produce biased and non-reproducible results [2]. This thesis proposes an end-to-end pipeline for automatically segmenting short-axis (SAX) CMRI images and generating high-quality 2D and 3D meshes suitable for finite element analysis. Due to the increasing use of photovoltaic systems, power grids are vulnerable to the projection of shadows from moving clouds. An intra-hour solar forecast provides power grids with the capability of automatically controlling the dispatch of energy, reducing the additional cost for a guaranteed, reliable supply of energy (i.e., energy storage). This dissertation introduces a novel sky imager consisting of a long-wave radiometric infrared camera and a visible light camera with a fisheye lens. The problem of estimating the location from which un-geotagged photographs were captured has been well studied by the computer vision community in recent years. The central proposal of this thesis is to define a common framework within which existing approaches can be constructed and evaluated, and to introduce a new method under this framework which uses cross-attention between the query image and a database of satellite imagery with known geotags. This work presents improvements to Monte Carlo Localization (MCL) for a mobile robot using computer vision. Solutions to the localization problem aim to provide fine resolution on location approximation, and also be resistant to changes in the environment. One such environment change is the kidnapped/teleported robot problem, where a robot is suddenly transported to a new location and must re-localize. The standard method of "Augmented MCL" uses particle filtering combined with addition of random particles under certain conditions to solve the kidnapped robot problem. For every face recognition method, the primary goal is to achieve higher recognition accuracy and spend less computational costs. However, as the gallery size increases, especially when one probe image corresponds to only one training image, face recognition becomes more and more challenging. First, a larger gallery size requires more computational costs and memory usage. Meanwhile, that the large gallery sizes degrade the recognition accuracy becomes an even more significant problem to be solved.

Mixed reality applications use techniques from computer vision, augmented reality and virtual reality to allow real and virtual objects interact physically together on a user’s computer screen. This paper will describe two mixed reality applications which allow the user to play games that appear to take place on top of their physical desk. The games described are a desktop racing game and a desktop based game of ten pin bowling.
