A Capability Maturity Model For Artificial Intelligence Integration In Supply Chain Management, Lordt Becklines

Dissertations

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming Supply Chain Management (SCM), yet many organizations struggle to assess their readiness for AI adoption and to understand how AI capabilities develop across maturity stages. This dissertation addresses this gap by developing a Capability Maturity Model (CMM) for AI integration in SCM, grounded in Organizational Information Processing Theory (OIPT), the Resource-Based View, and related capability frameworks. The model provides a structured approach for evaluating an organization's information-processing requirements, resource configurations, and alignment needed for effective AI-enabled supply chain operations.

Using a design science research approach, the AI-SCM CMM and its associated assessment instrument were derived …

Design Of A Simplified Biomimetic Autonomous Entertainment Robot, Jessica E. Morris, Shanny May Ruiz, Morgan Snyder, Hannah Guild, Gabriel Cardona-Tous

Graduate Scholarship and Creative Works

The advancement of technology has paved the way for robots with the purpose of entertainment to become more popular. However, the exploration of biomimetic actions as a factor of entertainment is majorly limited to the mimicry of young domesticated animals such as puppies and kittens, with some notable exceptions. However, there is a wide range of possibilities for robotics that mimic animals marketed as pets, outside of the common examples. This work seeks to explore the opportunity for autonomous systems with entertainment driven and expressive actions in the family of Testudines (turtles and tortoises), an undomesticated species, but still often …

Testing Autonomy: Hybrid Scenario Synthesis, Benjamin E. Hargis Apr 2025

Testing Autonomy: Hybrid Scenario Synthesis, Benjamin E. Hargis

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Hybrid Scenario Synthesis merges static and adaptive techniques to generate interactions that rigorously assess autonomous performance under multi-factor testing. Multifactor scenarios employ multiple individual stimuli to rigorously test system responses in complex settings. Static Scenario Testing involves scripted test cases that simulate specific conditions or events. These scenarios represent typical situations an autonomous system might encounter. The benefits of static testing include early defect detection, focused review by trained experts, and efficiency. In multi-factor scenarios, however, statically defined scenario factors are not able to guarantee meaningful interactions as the presence of other factors may invalidate underlying assumptions regarding the system …

Virtual Environment Creation And Camera Calibration For Soft Target Identification And Assistance In Crowded Spaces With A Sensor Network And A Robotic Dog, Eltan Samoylov

Dissertations and Theses

Crowded places are increasingly targets of violence due to the increased accessibility and covertness of weapons, explosives, and other technology like drones. Addressing the challenges of protecting crowded places and assisting vulnerable individuals requires a multidisciplinary approach, taking inspiration from many different perspectives. Video surveillance of these crowded public facilities, such as train and bus stations, airports, shopping malls, and sports arenas, is very important to public safety, both for identifying threats/terrorist attacks and implementing evacuation plans.

The work of this thesis is part of a larger project aiming to explore the potential of using real-time computer vision and deep …

Efficient And Test-Time Adaptive Visual Object Tracking In The Wild, Ram J. Zaveri Jan 2025

Efficient And Test-Time Adaptive Visual Object Tracking In The Wild, Ram J. Zaveri

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tracking a single object, given the location at the first frame, has been an ongoing challenge in the vision community for decades. Most recent approaches provide reasonably good performance, especially when benchmarked on in-distribution (ID) datasets, i.e., on the testing portion of the same datasets used for training. However, they incur high computational costs and hardware constraints, making their deployment in the wild for mobile, autonomous, and IoT applications still challenging. Efficient visual trackers address the efficiency aspect of such bottlenecks; however, they tend to overfit to their training distributions and lack generalization abilities, resulting in them performing well on …

Fast-Sparse-Spanner: A Practical Algorithm For Constructing Low-Stretch Sparse Geometric Graphs, Fnu Shariful Jan 2025

Fast-Sparse-Spanner: A Practical Algorithm For Constructing Low-Stretch Sparse Geometric Graphs, Fnu Shariful

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When constructing geometric graphs (vertices are points and edges are line segments connecting point pairs) on pointsets, stretch-factor (worst-case detour between any point pair) is often considered a quality metric. A low stretch-factor (a quantity that is usually > 1) guarantees short paths between all vertex pairs. A geometric graph having a stretch-factor of t is known as a t-spanner. Creating low stretch-factor geometric graphs for large pointsets with a low number of edges is an open problem in computational geometry.

In this work, we have designed and engineered a new simple and practical (fast and memory-efficient) algorithm named Fast-Sparse-Spanner algorithm …

Contextual Augmentation In Artificial Intelligence, Emmanuel Joshua Balogun Jan 2025

Contextual Augmentation In Artificial Intelligence, Emmanuel Joshua Balogun

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Contextual understanding is a significant challenge of Large Language Models (LLMs), which are typically trained on general-purpose datasets. Due to this, LLMs fail to capture nuanced or domain-specific information and may struggle to interpret user queries accurately. Consequently, prompt engineering can become complex in automating, and LLMs are prone to “hallucinating”—generating random or irrelevant texts—when they lack sufficient context. This undermines their ability to provide focused, accurate responses. Accordingly, this thesis seeks to enhance the contextual understanding capabilities of Artificial Intelligence systems to facilitate more precise and relevant answer generation. Study A looks into a new approach to combating misinformation …

Development Of A Rule-Based Monitoring System For Autonomous Heavy Equipment Safety, Amirpooya Shirazi

Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Roadway construction work zones are constantly exposed to interactions among construction equipment, workers, and vehicles. Furthermore, ensuring safety in these areas is considered a challenging task due to the complexity of the environment. As shown in the rising trend of fatal accidents in roadway work zones, current OSHA regulations in construction safety are insufficient in effectively detecting unsafe situations and mitigating the risks. Furthermore, best practices, such as internal traffic control planning (ITCP), exhibit critical limitations requiring continuous monitoring of active work zones as well as adjustments to the site coordination plans due to the dynamic nature of work zone …

The first part of this thesis provides an introduction to single-agent reinforcement learning and MARL. We provide examples of the use of MARL for countering uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS). We formulate the Counter-UAS problem as a multiagent partially observable Markov decision process (MAPOMDP), and we propose Multi-AGent partial observable deep …

The Integration Of Neuromorphic Computing In Autonomous Robotic Systems, Md Abu Bakr Siddique Jan 2024

The Integration Of Neuromorphic Computing In Autonomous Robotic Systems, Md Abu Bakr Siddique

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have come a long way in many cognitive tasks by training on large, labeled datasets. However, this method has problems in places with limited data and energy, like when planetary robots are used or when edge computing is used [1]. In contrast to this data-heavy approach, animals demonstrate an innate ability to learn by communicating with their environment and forming associative memories among events and entities, a process known as associative learning [2-4]. For instance, rats in a T-maze learn to associate different stimuli with outcomes through exploration without needing labeled data [5]. This learning paradigm …

Joint Learning Of Unknown Safety Constraints And Control Policies In Reinforcement Learning, Lunet Abiye Yifru Jan 2024

Joint Learning Of Unknown Safety Constraints And Control Policies In Reinforcement Learning, Lunet Abiye Yifru

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Reinforcement learning (RL) has revolutionized decision-making across a wide range of domains over the past few decades. Yet, deploying RL policies in real-world scenarios presents the crucial challenge of ensuring safety. Traditional safe RL approaches have predominantly focused on incorporating predefined safety constraints into the policy learning process. However, this reliance on predefined safety constraints poses limitations in dynamic and unpredictable real-world settings where such constraints may not be available or sufficiently adaptable. Bridging this gap, we propose a novel approach that concurrently learns a safe RL control policy and identifies the unknown safety constraint parameters of a given environment. …

The rapidly increasing number of drones in the national airspace, including those for recreational and commercial applications, has raised concerns regarding misuse. Autonomous drone detection systems offer a probable solution to overcoming the issue of potential drone misuse, such as drug smuggling, violating people’s privacy, etc. Detecting drones can be difficult, due to similar objects in the sky, such as airplanes and birds. In addition, automated drone detection systems need to be trained with ample amounts of data to provide high accuracy. Real-time detection is also necessary, but this requires highly configured devices such as a graphical processing unit (GPU). …

Neuromorphic Computing Applications In Robotics, Noah Zins Jan 2023

Neuromorphic Computing Applications In Robotics, Noah Zins

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Deep learning achieves remarkable success through training using massively labeled datasets. However, the high demands on the datasets impede the feasibility of deep learning in edge computing scenarios and suffer from the data scarcity issue. Rather than relying on labeled data, animals learn by interacting with their surroundings and memorizing the relationships between events and objects. This learning paradigm is referred to as associative learning. The successful implementation of associative learning imitates self-learning schemes analogous to animals which resolve the challenges of deep learning. Current state-of-the-art implementations of associative memory are limited to simulations with small-scale and offline paradigms. Thus, …

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference

A real-time external labeling algorithm has been developed to explore the potential for applying annotation and visualization to virtual reality environments, which manages label placement in the projections of virtual 3D models on the view plane. The approach intends to place labels with visual constraints, such as no overlapping, intersections, and occlusions, close proximity to the model parts, by adjusting external annotations' positions concerning available space in the view plane. This algorithm is based on the projected model's contour and adapts to camera viewpoint changes within interactive frame rates. It solves the visibility problem of annotations and operates in real-time …

Qlime-A Quadratic Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanation Approach, Steven Bramhall, Hayley Horn, Michael Tieu, Nibhrat Lohia

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we introduce a proof of concept that addresses the assumption and limitation of linear local boundaries by Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME), a popular technique used to add interpretability and explainability to black box models. LIME is a versatile explainer capable of handling different types of data and models. At the local level, LIME creates a linear relationship for a given prediction through generated sample points to present feature importance. We redefine the linear relationships presented by LIME as quadratic relationships and expand its flexibility in non-linear cases and improve the accuracy of feature interpretations. We coin …

A Ulysses Pact With Artificial Systems. How To Deliberately Change The Objective Spirit With Cultured Ai, Bruno Gransche

Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings

The article introduces a concept of cultured technology, i.e. intelligent systems capable of interacting with humans and showing (or simulating) manners, of following customs and of socio-sensitive considerations. Such technologies might, when deployed on a large scale, influence and change the realm of human customs, traditions, standards of acceptable behavior, etc. This realm is known as the "objective spirit" (Hegel), which usually is thought of as being historically changing but not subject to deliberate human design. The article investigates the question of whether the purposeful design of interactive technologies (as cultured technologies) could enable us to shape modes of …

A Deep Recurrent Q Network Towards Self-Adapting Distributed Microservices Architecture (In Press), Basel Magableh Jan 2019

A Deep Recurrent Q Network Towards Self-Adapting Distributed Microservices Architecture (In Press), Basel Magableh

Articles

One desired aspect of microservices architecture is the ability to self-adapt its own architecture and behaviour in response to changes in the operational environment. To achieve the desired high levels of self-adaptability, this research implements the distributed microservices architectures model, as informed by the MAPE-K model. The proposed architecture employs a multi adaptation agents supported by a centralised controller, that can observe the environment and execute a suitable adaptation action. The adaptation planning is managed by a deep recurrent Q-network (DRQN). It is argued that such integration between DRQN and MDP agents in a MAPE-K model offers distributed microservice architecture …

In this research, the artificial immune system (AIS) paradigm is used for the development of a conceptual framework for autonomous flight when vehicle position and velocity are not available from direct sources such as the global navigation satellite systems or external landmarks and systems. The AIS is expected to provide corrections of velocity and position estimations that are only based on the outputs of onboard inertial measurement units (IMU). The AIS comprises sets of artificial memory cells that simulate the function of memory T- and B-cells in the biological immune system of vertebrates. The innate immune system uses information about …

A Scalable, Chunk-Based Slicer For Cooperative 3d Printing, Jace J. Mcpherson Dec 2018

A Scalable, Chunk-Based Slicer For Cooperative 3d Printing, Jace J. Mcpherson

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cooperative 3D printing is an emerging technology that aims to increase the 3D printing speed and to overcome the size limit of the printable object by having multiple mobile 3D printers (printhead-carrying mobile robots) work together on a single print job on a factory floor. It differs from traditional layer-by-layer 3D printing due to requiring multiple mobile printers to work simultaneously without interfering with each other. Therefore, a new approach for slicing a digital model and generating commands for the mobile printers is needed, which has not been discussed in literature before. We propose a chunk-by-chunk based slicer that divides …
