This presentation describes research at Montana Tech to improve oil recovery rates in the Elm Coulee Oil Field in the Bakken Reservoir, Richmond County, Montana. The slides display current recovery rate predictions, enhanced oil recovery methods, reservoir model building and history matching strategies. Recommended development strategies include implementing hydrocarbon gas injection operations to improve current oil recovery rates by more than 75%. The impact of increased production on Production Engineers is also described. The Principal Investigators include John Evans, Leo Heath, David Reichhardt and Burt Todd in the Petroleum Engineering Department.

The San Emigdio Schist of Southern California permits examination of partial melting and devolatilization processes along a Late Cretaceous shallow subduction zone. Detrital and recrystallized zircon of the structurally highest portions of the schist bracket the depositional age to between ca. 102 and 98 Ma. Zircon oxygen isotope data from both lower-plate schist and upper-plate assemblages of the Sierra Nevada batholith (SNB) reveal a δ18O shift of ̃1.5% between igneous (̃5.5%) and recrystallized (̃7%) domains. These results, taken with previous zircon and whole-rock δ18O measurements, provide evidence for devolatilization and/or partial melting of the schist and fluid ascent through overlying …

This paper proposes a domain decomposition method for the coupled stationary Navier-Stokes and Darcy equations with the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman interface condition in order to improve the efficiency of the finite element method. The physical interface conditions are directly utilized to construct the boundary conditions on the interface and then decouple the Navier-Stokes and Darcy equations. Newton iteration will be used to deal with the nonlinear systems. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the features of the proposed method.

While minimum in-situ stress, and its orientation, can be measured from triaxial tests on core, it is more common to measure it as closure stress, by performing pressure testing of wells in the field. The efficiency of the use of CO2 as a displacement fluid in oil recovery is hampered by the existence of an unfavorable mobility ratio that is caused by the large difference in viscosity between the injected fluid (CO2) and the reservoir fluids. This viscosity contrast results in early CO2 breakthrough, viscous fingering, gas channeling, and consequently, the inability of CO2 to effectively contact much of the reservoir and the oil it contains. Although water coning is well understood, it is difficult to control in field operations resulting in low recovery and large volumes of waste produced water. A solution - proposed here - is a multi-functional well with the in-situ bottom water drainage and injection installations - Downhole Water Loop (DWL). Theoretically, DWL greatly improves well performance (for example, a two-fold increase of DWL well’s water drainage rate would increase the critical (water-free) oil rate by 80%). Limited data availability and poor data quality make it difficult to characterize many reservoirs. For reservoirs that have undergone waterflooding, production and injection data are a reliable source of information from which injector-to-producer connections can be inferred. In this research, we use well locations, injection and production rate data and well fractional flow values to develop a reservoir-scale network model. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been subjected to chemical treatment in order to introduce hydrophilic functional groups on their surfaces. These covalently bonded groups did enhance the solubility of MWCNTs in aqueous media as expected. Functionalized MWCNTs were characterized using FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, X-ray diffraction, dispersion test and TEM. Then, functionalized MWCNTs were incorporated in the hydrothermal synthesis method of transition metal sulfide catalysts (CoMo, NiMo, and Ethylenediamine-CoMo Sulfides).
