Novel Airframe Design For The Dual-Aircraft Atmospheric Platform Flight Concept, Eric Michael Mckee

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

A high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial airframe was designed for the innovative Dual-Aircraft Atmospheric Platform flight concept that exploits stratospheric wind velocity gradients to remain aloft indefinitely. Classical aircraft preliminary design techniques and high-fidelity tools were used to establish a baseline configuration.

Performance characteristics of numerous airfoil profiles were evaluated with two-dimensional flow software in an effort to determine the best-candidate airfoil for the unique application. Vortex-Lattice method tools were used to investigate the sensitivity of three-dimensional design parameters upon overall vehicle aerodynamic performance and determine both static and dynamic stability characteristics of the airframe. Performance capabilities of the finalized airframe …

Distributed Forcing On A 3d Bluff Body With A Blunt Base, An Experimental Active Drag Control Approach, Ethan Bruce Erlhoff Dec 2012

Distributed Forcing On A 3d Bluff Body With A Blunt Base, An Experimental Active Drag Control Approach, Ethan Bruce Erlhoff

Master's Theses

This paper seeks to explore the effects of an active drag control method known as distributed forcing on a 3D bluff body with a blunt base. The 9.5 x 15.25 x 3 inch aluminum model constructed for this experiment has an elliptically shaped nose and rectangular aft section. The model is fitted with four, 12 Volt fans, forcing the freestream air into and out of 1 mm thick slots on the upper and lower trailing edges. The forcing is steady in time, held at a constant forcing velocity though all Reynolds numbers, but varies roughly sinusoidally in the spanwise direction …

Confined Mixing Of Multiple Transverse Jets, Allen J. Bishop Dec 2012

Confined Mixing Of Multiple Transverse Jets, Allen J. Bishop

Master's Theses

The mixing performance of multiple transverse jets has been evaluated experimentally. Measurement techniques included laser Doppler velocimetry and planar laser induced fluorescence. Basic findings are consistent with results presented in literature for single jet mixing behavior. Mixing performance has been compared to literature for the single jet case and the Holdeman parameter has been re-evaluated for effectiveness at low jet numbers. A single jet in a confined crossflow was found to have a local minimum at B(d⁄D) = 0.721. Results for two jets indicate monotonically decreasing unmixedness for the range of conditions tested, with no local optimum apparent. Data for …

Novel Discretization Schemes For The Numerical Simulation Of Membrane Dynamics, Kyle F. Kolsti Sep 2012

Novel Discretization Schemes For The Numerical Simulation Of Membrane Dynamics, Kyle F. Kolsti

Theses and Dissertations

Motivated by the demands of simulating flapping wings of Micro Air Vehicles, novel numerical methods were developed and evaluated for the dynamic simulation of membranes. For linear membranes, a mixed-form time-continuous Galerkin method was employed using trilinear space-time elements, and the entire space-time domain was discretized and solved simultaneously. For geometrically nonlinear membranes, the model incorporated two new schemes that were independently developed and evaluated. Time marching was performed using quintic Hermite polynomials uniquely determined by end-point jerk constraints. The single-step, implicit scheme was significantly more accurate than the most common Newmark schemes. For a simple harmonic oscillator, the scheme …

Analysis Of A Goldschmied Propulsor Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Referencing California Polytechnic's Goldschmied Propulsor Testing, Cory A. Seubert

Master's Theses

The Goldschmied Propulsor is a concept that was introduced in mid 1950's by Fabio Goldschmied. The concept combines boundary layer suction and boundary layer ingestion technologies to reduce drag and increase propulsor efficiency. The most recent testing, done in 1982, left questions concerning the validity of the results. To answer these questions a 38.5in Goldschmied Propulsor was constructed and tested in Cal Poly's 3x4ft wind tunnel. The focus of their wind tunnel investigation was to replicate Goldschmied's original testing and increase the knowledge base on the subject. The goal of this research was to create a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) …

Computational Analysis Of A Wing Oscillator, Ryne Derrick Radermacher Aug 2012

Computational Analysis Of A Wing Oscillator, Ryne Derrick Radermacher

Masters Theses

An analysis of a newly proposed wind power extraction device called a wing oscillator was performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A wing oscillator is a device that consists of two airfoils attached to a central pivot by means of a frame or shaft. Oscillatory motion is produced by controlling the angle of attack of the airfoils as a fluid flow is passed over the device. A robust mathematical scheme was developed to investigate the performance of the wing oscillator and was hooked to the CFD software package FLUENT through User Defined Functions (UDFs). Using the dynamic meshing analysis methods …

Hot-Wire Anemometer For The Boundary Layer Data System, William D. Neumeister Jul 2012

Hot-Wire Anemometer For The Boundary Layer Data System, William D. Neumeister

Master's Theses

Hot-wire anemometry has been routinely employed for laboratory measurements of turbulence for decades. This thesis presents a hot-wire anemometer suitable for use with the Boundary Layer Data System (BLDS). BLDS provides a unique platform for in- flight measurements because of its small, self-contained, robust design and flexible architecture. Addition of a hot-wire anemometer would provide BLDS with a sensor that could directly measure flow velocity fluctuations caused by turbulence. Hot-wires are commonly operated in constant-temperature mode for high frequency response, but require a carefully tuned bridge. The constant-voltage anemometer (CVA) uses a simple op-amp circuit to improve frequency response over …

The Aerodynamic Test Platform (ATP) for the Cal Poly HPV Club is a system that was designed by Cal Poly mechanical engineering students to measure aerodynamic characteristics of a human-powered vehicle (HPV). The HPV team desired a system that could quantify the lift, drag, and other aerodynamic qualities of a full scale HPV at various orientations in oncoming airflow. Established methods for determining aerodynamic characteristics include computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel testing of scaled models. The ATP was devised to simulate the test results given by a full-scale wind tunnel without requiring a wind tunnel large enough to …

Heat, Mass And Force Flows In Supersonic Shockwave Interactions, John Michael Dixon May 2012

Heat, Mass And Force Flows In Supersonic Shockwave Interactions, John Michael Dixon

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There is no cost effective way to deliver a payload to space and, with rising fuel prices, currently the price to travel commercially is also becoming more prohibitive to the public. During supersonic flight, compressive shock waves form around the craft which could be harnessed to deliver an additional lift on the craft. Using a series of hanging plates below a lifting wing design, the total lift generated can be increased above conventional values, while still maintaining a similar lift-to-drag ratio. Here, we study some of the flows involved in supersonic shockwave interaction. This analysis uses ANSYS Fluent Computational Fluid …

High-Fidelity Modeling Of Airfoil Interaction With Upstream Turbulence, Jacob Brodnick Apr 2012

High-Fidelity Modeling Of Airfoil Interaction With Upstream Turbulence, Jacob Brodnick

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

To supplement past research on low speed unsteady airfoil responses to upstream disturbances, this work proposes and investigates a method to generate a turbulent momentum source to be convected downstream and interact with an SD7003 airfoil in a high-fidelity numerical simulation. A perturbation velocity field is generated from a summation of Fourier harmonics and applied to the forcing function in the momentum terms of the Navier Stokes Equations. The result is a three-dimensional, divergence-free, convected turbulent gust with applied statistical parameters. A parametric study has been done in 2D and 3D comparing the resultant flow fields and airfoil interactions for …

Validation Of The Chemistry Module For The Euler Solver In Unified Flow Solver, William C. Humphrey Jr. Mar 2012

Validation Of The Chemistry Module For The Euler Solver In Unified Flow Solver, William C. Humphrey Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

In the world of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), three main types of flow regimes exist: continuum, rarified, and free molecular. Of these regimes, the rarified regime is the most difficult to model because the continuum equations don't apply and using the Boltzmann equation is too computationally expensive to use. The Unified Flow Solver (UFS) is currently being developed to solve this problem by using the kinetic continuum Euler equations where valid, and only using the Boltzmann equation where necessary, thus reducing the computational cost. The use of the kinetic Euler equations helps to aid in the coupling of the Euler …

The cusps varied in the distance they …

High Performance Modeling Of Atmospheric Re-Entry Vehicles, Alexandre Martin, Leonardo C. Scalabrin, Iain D. Boyd Jan 2012

High Performance Modeling Of Atmospheric Re-Entry Vehicles, Alexandre Martin, Leonardo C. Scalabrin, Iain D. Boyd

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Re-entry vehicles designed for space exploration are usually equipped with thermal protection systems made of ablative material. In order to properly model and predict the aerothermal environment of the vehicle, it is imperative to account for the gases produced by ablation processes. In the case of charring ablators, where an inner resin is pyrolyzed at a relatively low temperature, the composition of the gas expelled into the boundary layer is complex and may lead to thermal chemical reactions that cannot be captured with simple flow chemistry models. In order to obtain better predictions, an appropriate gas flow chemistry model needs …

Effect Of Applied Magnetic Field On Shock Boundary Layer Interaction, Ovais U. Khan, Alexandre Martin Jan 2012

Effect Of Applied Magnetic Field On Shock Boundary Layer Interaction, Ovais U. Khan, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The governing magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations contain classical fluid dynamics equations along with coupled Maxwell’s magnetic induction equations. These equations model both advection and diffusion effects of electromagnetic field. However, available literature indicates that some previous investigations neglect the diffusion of magnetic field and considered only ideal MHD equations for modeling a typical MHD problem. In this work, the effects of magnetic field diffusion term also known as viscous magnetic term have been investigated over flow structure. Low magnetic Reynolds number approximation and ideal full MHD set of equations have been considered and solved using a four-stage modified Runge-Kutta scheme augmented …

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir Jan 2012

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

Aerodynamic characteristics of a racing car are of significant interest in reducing car-racing accidents due to wind loading and in reducing the fuel consumption. At the present, modified car racing becomes more popular around the world. Sports cars are most commonly seen with spoilers, such as Ford Mustang, Subaru Impreza, and Chevrolet Corvette. Even though these vehicles typically have a more rigid chassis and a stiffer suspension to aid in high-speed maneuverability, a spoiler can still be beneficial. One of the design goals of a spoiler is to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency. Many vehicles have a fairly steep …

Agglomeration, Evaporation And Morphological Changes In Droplets With Nanosilica And Nanoalumina Suspensions In An Acoustic Field, Erick Tijerino Jan 2012

Agglomeration, Evaporation And Morphological Changes In Droplets With Nanosilica And Nanoalumina Suspensions In An Acoustic Field, Erick Tijerino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Acoustic levitation permits the study of droplet dynamics without the effects of surface interactions present in other techniques such as pendant droplet methods. Despite the complexities of the interactions of the acoustic field with the suspended droplet, acoustic levitation provides distinct advantages of controlling morphology of droplets with nanosuspensions post precipitation. Droplet morphology is controlled by vaporization, deformation and agglomeration of nanoparticles, and therefore their respective timescales are important to control the final shape. The balance of forces acting on the droplet, such as the acoustic pressure and surface tension, determine the geometry of the levitated droplet. Thus, the morphology …

Thermal Stability Characteristics Of Fisher-Tropsch And Hydroprocessed Alternative Aviation Fuels In A Fixed Bed Reactor, Sergio Quintero Jan 2012

Thermal Stability Characteristics Of Fisher-Tropsch And Hydroprocessed Alternative Aviation Fuels In A Fixed Bed Reactor, Sergio Quintero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Growing prices, limited supply, and public concern about greenhouse gases associated with crude-derived jet fuels have led to development of renewable alternatives which must be compatible with the worldwide civilian and military aviation infrastructure, which were designed for operation with Jet-A/JP-8. Any alternative fuel should not have negative effects on the aircraft engines and fuel systems, especially from a thermal stability perspective, since any adverse effect of the physical properties, and chemical composition, including existence of trace elements, of those fuels may only be revealed after extensive operation, resulting in higher life-cycle maintenance and operation costs. This study considered four …
