Multiphysics Transport In Porous Thermal Protection Systems: Experimental Characterization Of Gas Permeability And Radiative Properties, Yejajul Hakim

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Porous thermal protection systems (TPS) used in hypersonic vehicles exhibit coupled gas and radiative transport across multiple regimes and length scales. Accurate performance prediction requires reliable characterization of permeability, slip-flow behavior, and radiative transport properties, particularly for low-permeability and charred materials where existing data are limited. This dissertation presents experimental methods for characterizing multiphysics transport in porous TPS materials. A modular flow system was developed to measure permeability and slip behavior in both virgin and charred materials under relevant environments. A transient pressure decay method enables accurate permeability estimation in low-permeability regimes and provides insight into effective pore structure. Results …

Numerical Investigation Of Wind Disturbance Around A Multirotor Uav In Crosswind And Vertical Flight, Garrison Page

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being increasingly utilized in a wide range of research applications, especially in meteorology. This is due to such factors as their ease of use, maneuverability compared to other forms of data collection, and for rotor- craft, the ability to hover. However, the rotorwash generated by UAVs can introduce significant disturbances, potentially affecting measurement accuracy from sensors. While several studies have investigated the rotorwash of individual UAVs utilizing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), there is limited exploration into how different rotor configurations and external wind conditions influence regions of turbulent flow around …

Development Of An Immersed Boundary Method-Wall Modeled Large Eddy Simulation Approach For Incompressible Flows And Aeroacoustic Predictions, John C. Higgins

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The performance capabilities of rotorcraft have improved significantly in the past decade as both manned and unmanned rotorcraft become a larger part of future transportation systems. Private companies as well as various government offices have worked to develop capabilities ranging from transportation/package delivery to intelligence/surveillance to livestock monitoring. Their practicality in both rural and urban areas, however, is questionable due to the significant tonal and broadband noise which is produced by the rotors. Public acceptance of rotorcraft, namely small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (sUAVs), in transportation systems is an issue largely associated with the noise generation and it's effect on nearby …

Direct Numerical Simulation Of Pulsating Flow In Curved Pipes: Insights Into Aortic Dissection In Humans, Gokul Anugrah Gopakumar

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

This dissertation investigates the hemodynamics of pulsating blood flow in curved vessels through direct numerical simulations (DNS), with the overarching aim of uncovering fluid dynamic mechanisms linked to the onset and progression of aortic dissection in humans. The work is structured in two parts: (i) fundamental studies in idealized geometries and (ii) preliminary investigations in patient-specific anatomies. In the first part, curved pipe models representing the aortic arch are used to isolate the effects of pulsation frequency, amplitude ratio, and curvature ratio on transitional and turbulent flow dynamics. The simulations reveal that curvature-driven centrifugal forces shift the peak velocity toward …

Kentucky Re-Entry Universal Payload System (Krups): Second Atmospheric Re-Entry Flight, Kirsten F. Ford

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Kentucky Re-entry Universal Payload System (KRUPS) is a small-scale re-entry capsule developed at the University of Kentucky. The KRUPS project began in 2013 with the aspiration of providing an affordable and repeatable method of collecting data on the re-entry environment. Numerically-based methods used to model re-entry require experimental data to validate their predictions. However, re-entry data is not easily obtained. Flight tests of re-entry vehicles require extensive time and resources, including a substantial financial burden. Alternatively, ground testing is not able to accurately and completely replicate the complex re-entry environment. Thus, there is a need for an inexpensive and accessible …

Advancements In Elliptic Mesh Redistribution And Automated Overset Grid Generation For Computational Fluid Dynamics, Chase Ashby

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Automated and robust structured curvilinear overset grid generation remains a significant challenge for the application of computational fluid dynamics. This thesis intro- duces a specialized anisotropic Mach cone aligned adaptation algorithm for low-boom simulations and an automated procedure for generating structured curvilinear overset grids for immersed boundary simulations. Results demonstrate that anisotropic mesh adaptation can reduce computational resource usage by over 50% while maintaining sonic boom prediction accuracy across the entire sonic boom domain compared to user-constructed Mach cone aligned grids. The proposed immersed overset grid gen- eration procedure eliminates the need for complex surface generation algorithms, producing grids suitable …

High-Fidelity Coupling For Studies Of Ablative Materials At Hypersonic Conditions, Aleksander Zibitsker

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The development of accurate models and robust numerical tools for simulating ablative thermal protection materials (TPMs) in hypersonic flows is crucial for advancing atmospheric entry and hypersonic technologies. Traditional methods for simulating ablative materials often rely on heavy assumptions, such as equal heat and mass transfer coefficients and chemical equilibrium in the boundary layer, leading to conservative thermal protection system (TPS) designs and insufficient accuracy for certain in-flight ablation phenomena.

This work presents a high-fidelity and versatile coupled framework between hypersonic flow and material response solvers. The flow domain is modeled with an innovative overset CHAMPS NBS-Cart solver, which features …

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Space vehicles are equipped with Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) that encounter high heat rates and protect the payload while entering a planetary atmosphere. For most missions that interest NASA, ablative materials are used as TPS. These materials undergo several mass and energy transfer mechanisms to absorb intense heat. The size and construction of the TPS are based on the composition of the planetary atmosphere and the impact of various ablative mechanisms on the flow field and the material. Therefore, it is essential to quantify the rates of different ablative phenomena to model TPS accurately. In this work, the impact of …

A Decoupled Engineering Methodology For Accurate Prediction Of Ablative Surface Boundary Conditions In Thermal Protection Systems, Justin Cooper Jan 2022

A Decoupled Engineering Methodology For Accurate Prediction Of Ablative Surface Boundary Conditions In Thermal Protection Systems, Justin Cooper

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The main objective of the present work is to demonstrate a method for prediction of aerothermal environments in the engineering design of hypersonic vehicles as an alternative to the current heritage method. Flat plate and stagnation point boundary layer theory require multiple assumptions to establish the current engineering paradigm. Chief among these assumptions is the similarity between mass and heat transfer. Origins of these assumptions are demonstrated and their relationship to conservative engineering design is analyzed, as well as conditions where they possibly break down. An alternative approach for assessing aerothermal environments from the fluid domain is presented, which permits …

Motivated by these needs, this dissertation is dedicated to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and scaling studies to improve existing inkjet technologies and develop new designs of efficient coating with single and/or multiple piezoelectric sensors to produce on-demand droplets. This dissertation study aims at developing a new DOD type coating technology, …

Experimental Investigation Of Roughness And Blowing Effects Over Ablator-Like Surfaces, Colby Borchetta Jan 2022

Experimental Investigation Of Roughness And Blowing Effects Over Ablator-Like Surfaces, Colby Borchetta

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Two separate experiments using PIV were carried out to investigate the effects of
roughness and blowing over surfaces geometrically similar to ablation materials used for atmospheric re-entry. The first, water tunnel experiments, employed a dimpled surface similar to AVCOAT, while the second set was completed in a wind tunnel with a material similar to PICA. For the first set, the flow with blowing becomes destabilized, and more disorganized. The blowing disrupts the relatively simple vorticity shedding process and significantly modifies momentum transport via interaction of detached structures. Flow structure and their modifications were examined with a sPOD analysis. The focus …

Numerical Investigation On The Effect Of Spectral Radiative Heat Transfer Within An Ablative Material, Raghava S. C. Davuluri, Rui Fu, Kaveh A. Tagavi, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The spectral radiative heat flux could impact the material response. In order to evaluate it, a coupling scheme between KATS - MR and P1 approximation model of radiation transfer equation (RTE) is constructed and used. A Band model is developed that divides the spectral domain into small bands of unequal widths. Two verification studies are conducted: one by comparing the simulation computed by the Band model with pure conduction results and the other by comparing with similar models of RTE. The comparative results from the verification studies indicate that the Band model is computationally efficient and can be used to …

Fully Coupled Internal Radiative Heat Transfer For The 3d Material Response Of Heat Shield, Raghava S. C. Davuluri, Rui Fu, Kaveh A. Tagavi, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The radiative transfer equation (RTE) is strongly coupled to the material response code KATS. A P-1 approximation model of RTE is used to account for radiation heat transfer within the material. First, the verification of the RTE model is performed by comparing the numerical and analytical solutions. Next, the coupling scheme is validated by comparing the temperature profiles of pure conduction and conduction coupled with radiative emission. The validation study is conducted on Marschall et al. cases (radiant heating, arc-jet heating, and space shuttle entry), 3D Block, 2D IsoQ sample, and Stardust Return Capsule. The validation results agree well for …

Data-Driven Tools Guided By First-Principles For Scale Modeling, Sadegh Poozesh Jan 2021

Data-Driven Tools Guided By First-Principles For Scale Modeling, Sadegh Poozesh

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

For decades, traditional scale-modeling techniques have been relying on first-principles models (FPMs). FPMs have been used to find non-dimensional numbers (PIs) and identify normalized underlying forces and energies behind the phenomenon in focus. The two main challenges with FPM-based PIs extraction are finding the relevant PIs and proper correlations between PIs. The emergence and surge of data-driven modeling (DDM) provide a new opportunity to leverage experimental data in model development across scales/plants. In this paper, first, the two mentioned issues in PIs development will be elaborated to reveal the gap, and second, a new insight into scale modeling and similarity …

Numerical Reconstruction Of Spalled Particle Trajectories In An Arc-Jet Environment, Raghava S. C. Davuluri, Sean C. C. Bailey, Kaveh A. Tagavi, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

To evaluate the effects of spallation on ablative material, it is necessary to evaluate the mass loss. To do so, a Lagrangian particle trajectory code is used to reconstruct trajectories that match the experimental data for all kinematic parameters. The results from spallation experiments conducted at the NASA HYMETS facility over a wedge sample were used. A data-driven adaptive methodology was used to adapts the ejection parameters until the numerical trajectory matches the experimental data. The preliminary reconstruction results show that the size of the particles seemed to be correlated with the location of the ejection event. The size of …

Turbulence Suppression In An Axially Rotating Pipe, Alyn J. Smith Jan 2021

Turbulence Suppression In An Axially Rotating Pipe, Alyn J. Smith

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The phenomenon of turbulence suppression in a rotating pipe flow system has been well documented by past research and experimentation. Despite this, the methods that drive this phenomenon have not yet been effectively characterized, especially at higher Reynolds numbers. While many experiments have been performed to better understand swirling turbulent pipe flow, a difficulty that arises is how to test for high levels of rotation without reducing the Reynolds number. This thesis documents the design and construction of a new pressurized pipe flow system at the University of Kentucky aimed at achieving high Reynolds numbers without causing a reduction in …

Modeling Thin Layers In Material Response Solvers, Christen Setters Jan 2021

Modeling Thin Layers In Material Response Solvers, Christen Setters

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) are a necessary component for atmospheric entry. Most TPS contain thin layers of various materials such as ceramic coatings, pore sealers and bonding agents. When modeling TPS, these thin layers are often neglected due to the difference in scale between the TPS (centimeters) and the thin layers (micrometers). In this study, a volume-averaging flux-conservation method is implemented in the governing equations of a finite volume material response code. The model proposes the addition of a volume and area fraction coefficient which utilizes a weighted-averaging between the amount of thin layer and heat shield material in a …

A Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction Method For Simulating Supersonic Parachute Inflation, Jonathan Boustani Jan 2021

A Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction Method For Simulating Supersonic Parachute Inflation, Jonathan Boustani

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Following the successful landing of the Curiosity rover on the Martian surface in 2012, NASA/JPL conducted the low-density supersonic decelerator (LDSD) missions to develop large diameter parachutes to land the increasingly heavier payloads being sent to the Martian surface. Unexpectedly, both of the tested parachutes failed far below their design loads. It became clear that there was an inability to model and predict loads that occur during supersonic parachute inflation. In this dissertation, a new computational method that was developed to provide NASA with the capability to simulate supersonic parachute inflation is presented and validated. The method considers the loose …

Flame Stabilization Of A Premixed Jet In Vitiated Coflow, Tyler Owens Jan 2020

Flame Stabilization Of A Premixed Jet In Vitiated Coflow, Tyler Owens

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Premixed staged combustion in gas turbine engines can reduce emissions by lowering peak flame temperatures but can also lead to different stability characteristics when compared to traditional combustors. High pressure ratio and subsequently high temperatures can lead to conditions suitable for both autoignition and premixed flame propagation in an environment where spatial fuel/air variations are present.

An experimental facility which issues a premixed jet into a coflowing vitiated mixture was studied to examine the stability behavior, resulting in a lifted flame. The effective ignition delay observed flame was much greater than homogeneous ignition delay calculations for the same conditions. It …

Development Of Universal Solver For High Enthalpy Flows Through Ablative Materials, Umran Duzel Jan 2020

Development Of Universal Solver For High Enthalpy Flows Through Ablative Materials, Umran Duzel

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Atmospheric entry occurs at very high speeds which produces high temperature around the vehicle. Entry vehicles are thus equipped with Thermal Protection Systems which are usually made of ablative materials. This dissertation presents a new solver that models the atmospheric entry environment and the thermal protection systems. In this approach, both the external flow and the porous heat shield are solved using the same computational domain. The new solver uses the Volume Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations adapted for hypersonic non-equilibrium flow, and is thus valid for both domains. The code is verified using analytical problems, set of benchmarks and also a …

Dust Control Examination Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling And Laboratory Testing Of Vortecone And Impingement Screen Filters, Ashish R. Kumar

Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering

Heavy industries, such as mining, generate dust in quantities that present an occupational health hazard. Prolonged exposure to the respirable dust has been found to result in many irreversible occupational ailments in thousands of miners. In underground mining applications, a variety of scrubbing systems are used to remove dust near the zones of generation. However, the wire-mesh type fibrous screens in the flooded-bed dust scrubbers used on continuous miners, are prone to clogging due to the accumulation of dust particles. This clogging results in a reduced capture efficiency and a higher exposure to the personnel. This research establishes the Vortecone, …

Wing-Tip Vortex Evolution In Turbulence, Hari Charan Ghimire Jan 2018

Wing-Tip Vortex Evolution In Turbulence, Hari Charan Ghimire

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Planar and stereo particle image velocimetry measurements were conducted of a wing-tip vortex decaying in free-stream turbulence in order to understand the evolution of a vortex and its decay mechanism. The vortex decayed faster in the presence of turbulence. The decay of the circulation was found to be almost entirely due to a decrease in circulation of the vortex core, caused by the relative decrease in peak tangential velocity without a corresponding increase in core radius. These events were found to be connected with the stripping of core fluid from the vortex core. The increased rate of decay of the …

Intermittency Effects On The Universality Of Local Dissipation Scales In Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows With And Without Free-Stream Turbulence, Sabah Falih Habeeb Alhamdi Jan 2018

Intermittency Effects On The Universality Of Local Dissipation Scales In Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows With And Without Free-Stream Turbulence, Sabah Falih Habeeb Alhamdi

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Measurements of the small-scale dissipation statistics of turbulent boundary layer flows with and without free-stream turbulence are reported for Reτ ≈ 1000 (Reθ ≈ 2000). The scaling of the dissipation scale distribution is examined in these two boundary conditions of external wall-bounded flow.

Results demonstrated that the local large-scale Reynolds number based on the measured longitudinal integral length-scale fails to properly normalize the dissipation scale distribution near the wall in these two free-stream conditions, due to the imperfect characterization of the upper bound of the inertial cascade by the integral length-scale. When a length-scale based on Townsend's …

Modeling the atmospheric entry of spacecraft is challenging because of the large number of physical phenomena that occur during the process. In order to study thermal protection systems, engineers rely on high fidelity solvers to provide accurate predictions of both the thermochemical environment surrounding the heat shield, and its material response. Therefore, it is necessary to guarantee that the numerical models are correctly implemented and thoroughly validated. In recent years, a high-fidelity modeling tool has been developed at the University of Kentucky for the purpose of studying atmospheric entry. The objective of this work is to verify and validate this …
