The growing use of chemical modifiers and additives in asphalt mixtures necessitates a reliable system for their identification and quantification, crucial for quality control, assurance, and forensic investigations. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy offers a cost-effective method by analyzing the interaction of infrared light with chemical groups, producing distinct spectral fingerprints. This study evaluates 44 materials, including binders, warm mix additives (WMAs), rejuvenators, release agents, and concrete admixtures. It also assesses the ability of FTIR testing to identify and quantify chemical changes and aging in asphalt binders with rejuvenator addition. An Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) accessory was employed for practical …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Silt is widely utilized as a filling material in transportation construction, However, it frequently suffers from problems, such as excess pore water pressure buildup, settlement, and mud pumping. Wicking geotextiles have emerged as a sustainable solution by improving both drainage and reinforcement capacities, yet their optimal design parameters remain unclear. To address this gap, a series of tests were performed to investigate the effects of compaction degree, reinforcement configuration (number, spacing, position), and specimen geometry on the mechanical and consolidation of silt reinforced with wicking geotextiles. The results reveal that the failure mechanism of reinforced silt progresses through four distinct …

Studying Effect Of Temperature On Photovoltaic Characteristics Of Photovoltaic Modules Based On Cigs Solar Cells, Farrux Anvar O‘G‘Li Akbarov, Anvar Akbarovich Alimov
Technical science and innovation
The article presents the experimental results of the temperature dependence of the load current-voltage characteristics of a solar photovoltaic (PV) module based on a polycrystalline semiconductor binary compound Cu(In,Ga)Se2 under normal sunlight Prad=800±5 W/m2, in a temperature range of (32÷60) оС. It was found that the temperature dependence of the photocurrent has two slopes, which is explained by a change in the generation-recombination mechanism. An increase in the short-circuit current with an increase in the temperature of the photovoltaic module is explained by an increase in the drift length of minority charge carriers, due …

Clay minerals contain significant amounts of Fe in their alumosilicate framework, and this structural Fe can be reduced and re-oxidized, constituting a potentially renewable source of reduction equivalents in sedimentary environments. However, dissolution and/or clay mineral transformations during microbial Fe reduction contradict this concept. Here, we investigate how Fe reduction and re-oxidation affect the propensity of Fe to be released from the clay mineral structure and use selective sequential extractions in combination with Mössbauer spectroscopy. Negligible amounts of Fe were released in the sequential extraction of high Fe content clay minerals NAu-1 and NAu-2. Once aqueous Fe(II) was added as …

This article presents an analysis of maintaining wellbore stability, preventing pack-off formation, stuck pipe incidents, and drilling fluid losses. A technology aimed at ensuring successful and high-quality trouble-free well drilling is analyzed and recommended. Based on data obtained from the Surkhandarya Basin fields, many wells were not drilled to the designed depth. Geophysical data from studied fields indicate that pore pressure retained in clay formations causes wellbore instability. These data also help to identify zones prone to collapse; however, the direct measurement of pore pressure in such formations remains impossible. This research was primarily conducted in the Ustyurt region, one …

Unveiling Degradation Patterns In Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: A Machine Learning Perspective, Ahmed Alali, Mahmoud Ashraf, Ahmad Muhammad, Sameh O. Abdellatif
Electrical Engineering
This study examines the time-dependent degradation of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by systematically investigating several critical parameters, including TiO2 thickness, porosity, dye concentration, and iodine-based electrolyte concentration. We developed a novel figure of merit (FOM) to quantify the degradation rates, utilizing a finite element model (FEM) in COMSOL to simulate performance over time. 400 DSSC samples were fabricated, resulting in a comprehensive dataset comprising over 228,000 data points derived from experimental results and simulations. The findings reveal that PCE declines significantly over time, with an average initial efficiency of 4.0% for the DSSCs, dropping to approximately 0.5% after 360 h. …

Experiments were conducted at a low radio-frequency plasma power of 50 Watts without external heating. The results demonstrated significantly enhanced conversions of …
Investigating Vacuum Insulator Flashover Resistance Of Rexolite And Acrylic Before And After Applying Novel Insulator Cleaning Techniques, Ritin Joseph
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Pulsed power involves accumulating large amounts of electrical energy and releasing it instantaneously. Large pulsed power accelerators use a vacuum insulator stack to facilitate power transfer from the liquid to vacuum section. Limiting the probability of surface flashover in this setting to acceptable levels improves machine longevity and prevents energy loss. Post-shot debris deposition requires a refurbishment process to prevent deterioration of dielectric performance, though the current technique of hand-sanding is long, labor-intensive, and pose serious health hazards. I have collected flashover data on frustrum-shaped Acrylic and C-Lec Rexolite® (cross-linked polystyrene) samples using a 500-kV, 20-ns risetime pulsed power test …

Getting more water to the declining Great Salt Lake (GSL) is difficult. Strategies must address complex water rights, competing water needs, differing stakeholder priorities, historical legacies, lack of trust, and more arid and variable hydrology. Here we used immersive online collaborative modeling to explore water banking strategies to get more water to GSL. This 2-page brief describes the immersive modeling method, a Win-Win outcome, key results, new insights collaborators took from a model session, 2 new strategies to deliver water to GSL, and 3 next steps.

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In response to growing environmental concerns and the urgent demand for sustainable development, the composite materials industry is increasingly challenged to balance high performance with environmental responsibility. Conventional composites, typically composed of synthetic fibers and petroleum-based resins, offer outstanding mechanical properties but are associated with significant ecological drawbacks due to their non-biodegradable nature and energy-intensive production. This has led to increased interest in the development of sustainable composites that minimize environmental impact without compromising functionality. This study presents the development of eco-friendly composites reinforced with natural bast fibers—specifically ramie and jute—through a comprehensive program of materials processing and characterization. To …

The software Requirements Prioritization (RP) process is essential for producing a successful software project. Requirements are interdependent in software projects, so handling their dependency during the RP process is mandatory. Many researchers have shown that requirements dependency is challenging for large-scale systems. Extracting requirements dependency is difficult since requirements are documented in natural language. Improper handling of dependencies among requirements while prioritization can cause inaccurate prioritization results and deadlocks, which cause project delays, rework, and redesign. Many techniques have been introduced to automate the dependency analysis process among software requirements, including artificial intelligence (AI) and other logic-based methods such as …
