Presently, widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is hindered by challenges associated with XFC, including heat generation, lithium plating, and accelerated battery degradation. This dissertation addresses these barriers through two coordinated themes—lithium plating and thermal management—spanning four manuscripts that integrate operando diagnostics, physics-based simulation, and module-level design optimization. The first theme seeks a fundamental investigation into the dynamic interplay between temperature heterogeneity and lithium plating during fast charging, a phenomenon that poses significant limitations on the performance of graphite-based anodes. Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) causes extensive damage to concrete infrastructure worldwide, with traditional mitigation strategies increasingly constrained by supplementary cementitious material (SCM) supply limitations. This dissertation investigates an innovative approach to ASR prevention through strategic application of hydrophobic materials to modify moisture and ionic transport pathways in cement mortars. The research employed a comprehensive three-objective experimental program using highly reactive aggregates and three hydrophobic materials: hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS)-treated fumed silica, silane-based emulsion, and silane-based crème. The first objective demonstrated the feasibility of hydrophobic aggregate surface modification, achieving 46% and 38% reductions in ASR expansion for washed and non-washed hydrophobic aggregates, respectively. Fluid-based manufacturing processes, such as inkjet printing and electrospinning, fabricate micro- and nano-scale structures with high precision, but are prone to complex fluid dynamics exhibiting axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric instabilities. Conventional monitoring often relies on single-camera inputs and symmetry assumptions, limiting the detection of three-dimensional anomalies like jet deflection. This study presents a novel multi-view streaming video-based anomaly detection framework to address this gap. This collaborative study, conducted by an engineering scholar and a policy researcher of Indigenous heritage in Benguet among the Ibaloi and Kankanaey peoples, investigates how risk transparency and policy alignment can bridge existing divides, while formulating principles applicable to other Indigenous mining contexts. The Multi-Cater Pack Heat Sealer was developed to support Achievement House, a non-profit organization that employs adults with intellectual and physical disabilities and is facing increasing demand for sealed cater packs. Existing single-pack sealers limited both throughput and accessibility, which led to the creation of a 3D printed attachment for a 40-inch impulse heat sealer. The attachment allows nine packs to be sealed at the same time and includes a tray-style trapdoor that allows for quick unloading. This project introduces a portable carbon monoxide detector integrated into a water bottle lid to give users a simple way to stay aware of CO exposure in daily life. The design packages an electrochemical sensor, onboard electronics, and clear visual and audible alerts into a compact form that fits standard bottles. By embedding sensing into an object people already carry, the device offers a practical path toward reducing unrecognized CO risks and improving personal safety.

This study addresses the critical need for self-powered, durable pressure sensors in Total Knee Replacement (TKR) implants to enable the collection of post-operative information. The scope of this research encompasses the design, development, and testing of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) integrated into an instrumented knee implant for energy harvesting and pressure sensing. The authors’ unique approach involves utilizing a porous silicone rubber as a dielectric material. This allows the TENG to withstand forces up to 2000 N and generate a maximum power output of 18 μW. This thesis presents the design and evaluation of a vacuum-actuated, origami-based soft robotic gripper. A custom Sea Urchin crease pattern forms a lightweight folding skeleton that collapses radially under vacuum. The system emphasizes low cost and accessibility through laser cutting, 3D printing, and silicone molding. The Sea Urchin geometry was selected after digital and physical screening of candidate crease patterns for smooth folding, low strain concentration, and uniform inward motion. Despite this growth, training robust 3D perception models remains challenging due to limited labeled data, the complexity of integrating multiple modalities, and the inherently imbalanced and long-tailed nature of 3D datasets. Polyolefins (POs) are inexpensive engineering materials with excellent physical and mechanical properties, accounting for nearly 60% of all thermoplastics. However, large-scale recycling remains limited, with only ~15% undergoing mechanical recovery. This dissertation addresses this challenge by fragmenting and functionalizing polypropylene (PP) chains to generate macromonomers and employing them, along with industrial reactive PP macromonomers, to synthesize, depolymerize, and repolymerize chemically recyclable polypropylene-based polyolefins (CR-POs). These CR-POs incorporate ester linkages that form covalent adaptable networks (CANs), maintaining a gel fraction of ~70% while remaining melt-reprocessable via extrusion and compression molding.

However, its stability and functionality depend strongly on achieving high purity, and current methods such as size-exclusion chromatography suffer from peak overlap, low yields, and poor scalability. With rising global demand for renewable energy, enhancing microbial platforms for biofuel production is vital. This study engineered Bacillus subtilis to improve resilience to solvent stress by targeting membrane lipid biosynthesis pathways essential for integrity. Growth curve analysis (OD₆₀₀) showed that phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) knockout strains grew significantly slower than wild type (168), indicating the importance of these lipids under stress. Federated learning is a collaborative training model in which multiple clients optimize aglobal model by transmitting updates to a coordinating server while keeping raw data on-device, thereby reducing direct data exposure and enabling iterative global improvement. However, the iterative communication process is vulnerable to malicious attackers that either deliberately destroy the model or curious to infer raw data. Moreover, learning from multiple agents may result in unfair results. Turbulent boundary layers are a major source of drag and performance loss. This thesis investigates Triangular Porous Texturing (TPT), apex-forward microstructures with optional bleed channels, as a passive concept for simultaneously reducing skin friction and strengthening boundary layer momentum near separation. Low-speed wind tunnel tests are conducted over tripped turbulent boundary layers on flat plates with three surfaces: a smooth baseline, a solid-crest TPT array isolating the knife-edge “slip-cut” effect, and a porous-bleed TPT array whose paired micro-channels vent a small fraction of the free stream.
