Analysis And Control Of Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (Frees), Soheil Habibian Jan 2019

Analysis And Control Of Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (Frees), Soheil Habibian

Master’s Theses

While rigid robots are extensively used in various applications, they are limited in the tasks they can perform and can be unsafe in close human-robot interactions. Soft robots on the other hand surpass the capabilities of rigid robots in several ways, such as compatibility with the work environments, degrees of freedom, manufacturing costs, and safe interactions with the environment. This thesis studies the behavior of Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosures (FREEs) as a particular type of soft pneumatic actuator that can be used in soft manipulators. A dynamic lumped-parameter model is created to simulate the motion of a single FREE under various …

Stability Analysis Of Leg Configurations For Bipedal Running, Nitin Jaiswal

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A legged robot with three-segmented limbs is used to study the effects of leg compliance originating from the joint level on the stability of hopping in place and running. The three-segments allow each leg to be kinematically configured an infinite number ways that satisfy the desired landing condition parameters, total leg length and angle. These two parameters along with the amount of energy thrust during stance determine the motion of the system during a single stride. The goal of this work is to explore the potential values for the leg parameters of three-segment leg, that provide additional stability when compared …

Satellite Maintenance: An Opportunity To Minimize The Kessler Effect, Bettina M. Mrusek Dr. Jan 2019

Satellite Maintenance: An Opportunity To Minimize The Kessler Effect, Bettina M. Mrusek Dr.

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Recently, there has been an emphasis on the growing problem of orbital debris. While the advantages of placing satellites into space are numerous, advances in satellite technology combined with the growth of the industry have resulted with a significant amount of debris in the orbits surrounding our planet. The harshness of the space environment has also contributed to the debris, as evidenced by the number of objects currently in orbit which are not operational. As the amount of debris grows, so too does the likelihood of collisions, ultimately culminating in the Kessler Effect. However, recent advances in propulsion, advanced navigation, …

Three-Channel Control Architecture For Multilateral Teleoperation Under Time Delay, Uğur Tümerdem Jan 2019

Three-Channel Control Architecture For Multilateral Teleoperation Under Time Delay, Uğur Tümerdem

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Multilateral teleoperation is an extension of bilateral/haptic teleoperation framework to multiple operators/robots and finds applications in haptic training. As in bilateral teleoperation, time delay is an important problem, and stability and transparency, which quantifies the performance of the teleoperation system, are critical in the design of multilateral control systems. This paper proposes a novel three-channel-based multilateral control architecture with damping injection to guarantee delay-independent L2 stability and high transparency in multilateral teleoperation systems. The theoretical and computational analyses are verified with experiment results.

Contribution Of Artificial Proprioception On A Dynamic Finger Flexion Task, Mehdi Hojatmadani, Evren Samur

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

There has been a considerable effort to provide sensory feedback for myoelectric prostheses. Among the solutions provided in the literature, sensory substitution is an easy and cost-effective way to provide feedback through different sensory modalities at different locations on the body. In this study, we evaluate the effect of sensory substitution of force and position feedback on a two-degree-of-freedom dynamic finger flexion task. For this purpose, a new methodology and an experimental setup are developed. The experimental methodology is based on the "strength-dexterity test", working on the principle of buckling of compression springs. The experimental setup comprises a haptic interface, …

A Scalable, Chunk-Based Slicer For Cooperative 3d Printing, Jace J. Mcpherson Dec 2018

A Scalable, Chunk-Based Slicer For Cooperative 3d Printing, Jace J. Mcpherson

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cooperative 3D printing is an emerging technology that aims to increase the 3D printing speed and to overcome the size limit of the printable object by having multiple mobile 3D printers (printhead-carrying mobile robots) work together on a single print job on a factory floor. It differs from traditional layer-by-layer 3D printing due to requiring multiple mobile printers to work simultaneously without interfering with each other. Therefore, a new approach for slicing a digital model and generating commands for the mobile printers is needed, which has not been discussed in literature before. We propose a chunk-by-chunk based slicer that divides …

Reinforcement Learning In Robotic Task Domains With Deictic Descriptor Representation, Harry Paul Moore Oct 2018

Reinforcement Learning In Robotic Task Domains With Deictic Descriptor Representation, Harry Paul Moore

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the field of reinforcement learning, robot task learning in a specific environment with a Markov decision process backdrop has seen much success. But, extending these results to learning a task for an environment domain has not been as fruitful, even for advanced methodologies such as relational reinforcement learning. In our research into robot learning in environment domains, we utilize a form of deictic representation for the robot’s description of the task environment. However, the non-Markovian nature of the deictic representation leads to perceptual aliasing and conflicting actions, invalidating standard reinforcement learning algorithms. To circumvent this difficulty, several past research …

Design Of Parallel Robot For Dental Articulation And Its Optimization, Abulimiti Delimulati Aug 2018

Design Of Parallel Robot For Dental Articulation And Its Optimization, Abulimiti Delimulati

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A dental articulator is a mechanical device used to simulate the relative position and motion between the upper and lower jaw when constructing and testing dental prostheses. Typically, it can be adjusted to approximate patient-specific jaw kinematics in order to analogue the static relationship and specific motions of a patient’s mandible to maxilla. However, the use of dental articulators is essentially a trial-and-error method in order to fine-tune fit and function of a dental prosthesis. Some of the most advanced current dental articulators can reproduce the position and the motion passively; furthermore, dentists need special training for measuring patients’ maxillofacial …

Control Design And Implementation Of An Active Transtibial Prosthesis, Joseph Klein Jul 2018

Control Design And Implementation Of An Active Transtibial Prosthesis, Joseph Klein

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Prior work at Marquette University developed the Marquette Prosthesis, an active transtibial prosthesis that utilized a torsional spring and a four-bar mechanism. The controls for the Marquette Prosthesis implemented a finite state control algorithm to determine the state of gait of the amputee along with two lower level controllers, a PI moment controller to control the moment during stance and a PID position controller to control the position during stance. The Marquette Prosthesis was successful in mimicking the gait profile presented by Winter. However, after completing human subject testing, the Marquette Prosthesis was insufficient in trying to match the gait …

Search Methods For Mobile Manipulator Performance Measurement, Samuel Nana Yaw Amoako-Frimpong Jul 2018

Search Methods For Mobile Manipulator Performance Measurement, Samuel Nana Yaw Amoako-Frimpong

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Mobile manipulators are a potential solution to the increasing need for additional flexibility and mobility in industrial robotics applications. However, they tend to lack the accuracy and precision achieved by fixed manipulators, especially in scenarios where both the manipulator and the autonomous vehicle move simultaneously. This thesis analyzes the problem of dynamically evaluating the positioning error of mobile manipulators. In particular, it investigates the use of Bayesian methods to predict the position of the end-effector in the presence of uncertainty propagated from the mobile platform. Simulations and real-world experiments are carried out to test the proposed method against a deterministic …

Baseball Shagger, Anthony Velasquez, Nick Walker, Nathaniel Kai Paresa Jun 2018

Baseball Shagger, Anthony Velasquez, Nick Walker, Nathaniel Kai Paresa

Computer Engineering

The purpose of our project is to allow players to hit baseballs on a baseball field and not have to worry about picking them up. By combining our knowledge of software and hardware, we developed the first design of a robot that “shags” baseballs. Our endeavor was only partially successful. The device was tested on grass, turf, and concrete. The motors did not have enough torque to get moving on grass. The device faired better on turf where it could move, but was quite jerky as the motor drive needed to be high to start moving, but once it was …

Design Optimization And Control Of A Fully Actuated Hexrotor Uav For Use In Aerial Manipulation Applications, Jameson Yau Sung Lee May 2018

Design Optimization And Control Of A Fully Actuated Hexrotor Uav For Use In Aerial Manipulation Applications, Jameson Yau Sung Lee

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This work addresses the issue of controller complexity in the application of a special class of multirotor in aerial manipulation tasks. Much of the current research concerning aerial manipulation involves the modeling and control of highly coupled multirotor and manipulator systems. This is a consequence of the platform’s under-actuation condition. To accommodate the rejection of arbitrary wrench disturbances brought about by the environment, multirotor must perform deliberate attitude tracking to affect forward and lateral maneuvers mid-flight. The manipulator end-effector tracking is highly affected by this, thus, their performance in general aerial manipulation is limited. To address these limitations, a special …

Diginol: A Joule-Heated Binary-Partitioned Nitinol Actuator, Martin Dawson Holland Jan 2018

Diginol: A Joule-Heated Binary-Partitioned Nitinol Actuator, Martin Dawson Holland

All ETDs from UAB

New and innovative robotic designs are always needed in both research and commercial fields. To that end, new and innovative actuators are needed as well. In this paper, a digitally controlled Nitinol actuator, Diginol, is proposed. Diginol is a Nitinol actuator that uses Joule heating to individually activate partitions of a length of Nitinol. The lengths of the partitions follow a base-2 pattern, minimizing the number of partitions required for a given number of actuation lengths. Activating separate partitions instead of the entire length of Nitinol circumvents the need to account for the hysteresis and nonlinearities inherent in the transformation …

Reducing Uncertainty In Head And Neck Radiotherapy With Plastic Robotics, Mark R. Ostyn Jan 2018

Reducing Uncertainty In Head And Neck Radiotherapy With Plastic Robotics, Mark R. Ostyn

Theses and Dissertations

One of the greatest challenges in achieving accurate positioning in head and neck radiotherapy is that the anatomy at and above the cervical spine does not act as a single, mechanically rigid body. Current immobilization techniques contain residual uncertainties that are especially present in the lower neck that cannot be reduced by setting up to any single landmark. The work presented describes the development of a radiotherapy friendly mostly-plastic 6D robotic platform for positioning independent landmarks, (i.e., allowing remote, independent positioning of the skull relative to landmarks in the thorax), including analysis of kinematics, stress, radiographic compatibility, trajectory planning, physical …

Real-Time Minimum Jerk Optimal Trajectory Synthesis And Tracking For Ground Vehicle Applications, Naga Venkata Murali Veerapaneni Dec 2017

Real-Time Minimum Jerk Optimal Trajectory Synthesis And Tracking For Ground Vehicle Applications, Naga Venkata Murali Veerapaneni

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Research on wheeled mobile robots has been an active research field for several decades with focus on the problems of stability, maneuverability and control. The trajectory generation for wheeled mobile robots is usually handled by considering a smooth function satisfying the boundary conditions. Even though this problem is well posed for several function classes, the real issue occurs in generating a feasible trajectory for the robot which takes into account the constraints of the system. Another problem from the control system perspective is, whether the derived controller is stable for the entire trajectory span to track the given trajectory. The …

Poly Spotlight Control, Ryan P. O'Neill, C. Oleg Frandle, Anthony T. Lombardi Dec 2017

Poly Spotlight Control, Ryan P. O'Neill, C. Oleg Frandle, Anthony T. Lombardi

Mechanical Engineering

When this project began, The Cambria Center for the Arts Theater used a manually-operated spotlight. The sound created by the fans, along with the sheer size of the spotlight, required that it be housed in an attic room above the theater and shined through a closed window. This trapped a lot of heat in the room and involved some risk with climbing into and out of the attic room. This project sought to remedy those issues by mounting a pair of newer LED spotlights inside the theater. Doing this required a method for remotely controlling and actuating the angular position …

Multi-Target Extension For Beacon Foraging Methods, Christopher Sanford, Ziong Jiao, Jae Oh Nov 2017

Multi-Target Extension For Beacon Foraging Methods, Christopher Sanford, Ziong Jiao, Jae Oh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Robotic foraging is a complex problem that encompasses both the problem of exploring an area and retrieval of targets. To solve this, biologically inspired algorithms have been proposed that handle the scenario when only one target exists, but requires extension to multiple targets. In both scenarios there exists problems of robot allocation and congestion, and we analyze ways of optimizing both allocation and minimizing congestion for our algorithms. We demonstrate the results through parameterized metrics and compare the improvements in each scenario.

This is a technical report on artificial intelligence, 2017, written by Sanford, Jiao, and Oh.
