Performance Of Sensor Fusion For Vehicular Applications, Nikola Janevski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Sensor fusion is a key system in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, ADAS. The perfor-
mance of the sensor fusion depends on many factors such as the sensors used, the kinematic
model used in the Extended Kalman Filter, EKF, the motion of the vehicles, the type of
road, the density of vehicles, and the gating methods. The interactions between parameters
and the extent to which individual parameters contribute to the overall accuracy of a sensor
fusion system can be difficult to assess.
In this study, a full-factorial experimental evaluation of a sensor fusion system based
on a real vehicle was performed. …

Transportation electrification is clearly the road toward the future. Compared to internal combustion engine, the electrified vehicle has less carbon-dioxide emission, less maintenance costs and less operation costs. It also offers higher efficiency and safety margin. More importantly, it relieves human’s dependence on conventional fossil energy. In the electrification progress, the revolution of electric traction drive systems is one of the most important milestone. The traction system should keep high efficiency to avoid performance reduction. Moreover, the motor drive should be designed within limited space without sacrificing output power rating. Based on the road map from US Drive Electrical and …

An Investigation Into Cognitive Radio System Performance, Courtney Hardy, Lucas F. Feather, William S. Guy
Honors Theses
The objective of this thesis is to explore cognitive radio performance through an in-depth literature review and an implementation of a software-defined radio prototyping system. Specifically, this thesis investigates the spectrum-sensing aspect of cognitive radio by comparing two spectrum-sensing methods. It was found in the literature review that a system utilizing matched filter detection would provide higher probability of detection in low signal-to-noise ratio environments when compared to a system utilizing energy detection. These spectrum sensing methods were thus implemented and compared in the cognitive radio systems presented in this thesis. Additionally, experiments were conducted to determine the most efficient …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
We describe a modeling framework to capture and account for uncertainty in design parameters in embedded systems. We then develop an uncertainty-aware solution to the problem of mapping in embedded systems that uses Network-on-Chip (NoC) based architecture platforms. The problem of mapping is formulated as a multi-objective - reliability, performance, and energy consumption - optimization problem. To solve this problem, we propose a solution based on the NSGA-II genetic algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The solution is implemented as a computer-aid design tool that can generate robust 3D Pareto frontiers in the solution space formed by the design objectives …

Substantial time is spent on building, optimizing and maintaining large-scale software that is run on supercomputers. However, little has been done to utilize overall resources efficiently when it comes to including expensive human resources. The community is beginning to acknowledge that optimizing the hardware performance such as speed and memory bottlenecks contributes less to the overall productivity than does the development lifecycle of high-performance scientific applications. Researchers are beginning to look at overall scientific workflows for high performance computing. Scientific programming productivity is measured by time and effort required to develop, configure, and maintain a simulation experiment and its constituent …

The pervasiveness of simulators used in professions requiring the skilled control of expensive machinery such as is the case in the aviation, mining, construction, and naval industries raises an intriguing question about the relatively poor adoption within the field of medicine. Certain surgical procedures such as neuro-endoscopic and laparoscopic lend themselves well to the application of virtual reality based simulators. This is due to the innate ability to decom- pose these complex macro level procedures into a hierarchy of subtasks that can be modelled in a software simulator to augment existing teaching and training techniques.

Single Phase Transformerless Inverter Topologies For Grid-Tied Photovoltaic System: A Review
Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya
Grid-tied inverters are the key components of distributed generation system because of their function as an effective interface between renewable energy sources and utility. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the use of transformerless inverter for low-voltage single-phase grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system due to higher efficiency, lower cost, smaller size and weight when compared to the ones with transformer. However, the leakage current issues of transformerless inverter, which depends on the topology structure and modulation scheme, have to be addressed very carefully. This review focuses on the transformerless topologies, which are classified into three basic groups based on …

Joint Map Registration And High Resolution Image Estimation Using A Sequence Of Undersampled Images, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth J. Barnard, Ernest E. Armstrong
Russell C. Hardie
n many imaging systems, the detector array is not sufficiently dense to adequately sample the scene with the desired field of view. This is particularly true for many infrared focal plane arrays. Thus, the resulting images may be severely aliased. This paper examines a technique for estimating a high-resolution image, with reduced aliasing, from a sequence of undersampled frames. Several approaches to this problem have been investigated previously. However, in this paper a maximum a posteriori (MAP) framework for jointly estimating image registration parameters and the high-resolution image is presented. Several previous approaches have relied on knowing the registration parameters …
A Distributed Particle Filtering Approach For Multiple Acoustic Source Tracking Using An Acoustic Vector Sensor Network
Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya
Different centralized approaches such as least-squares (LS) and particle filtering (PF) algorithms have been developed to localize an acoustic source by using a distributed acoustic vector sensor (AVS) array. However, such algorithms are either not applicable for multiple sources or rely heavily on sensor-processor communication. In this paper, a distributed unscented PF (DUPF) approach is proposed for multiple acoustic source tracking. At each distributed AVS node, the first-order and the second-order statistics of the local state are estimated by using an unscented information filter (UIF) based PF. The UIF is employed to approximate the optimum importance function due to its …

Zigbee-Based Data Acquisition System For Online Monitoring Of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System
Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya
For grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system, monitoring is considered as a crucial aspect for observing the stability and performance of the system. The simplest method is to have the data collected and transmitted across data cables. Due to the cost and technical limitations of the data cable, the monitoring station needs to be located reasonably close to the monitored plant. Apart being inconvenient, the use of data cable often adds capital and maintenance cost to the system. In this research project, a Zigbee-based wireless monitoring system is developed for online monitoring of a grid-connected photovoltaic system. Parameters like temperature, irradiation, PV …
Semi-Z-Source Inverter Topology For Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System
Semi-Z-Source Inverter Topology For Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System
Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya
Transformer-less inverters are necessary parts for grid-connected renewable energy resources. Owing to its cost effectiveness, downsize and less weight, great attention has been paid to these inverters development. With these aforementioned advantages, these inverters have limitations like the flow of leakage current through photovoltaic arrays, high total harmonic distortion (THD) at inverter's output and DC current injection to the grid. This study presents coupled inductor-based single-phase transformer-less semi-Z-source inverter topology to lessen those limitations. Since the DC input and AC output voltage share a common ground, the presented inverter system is categorised under doubly grounded topologies. For the purpose of …

Simulation Study Of Hemt Structures With Hfo2 Cap Layer For Mitigating Inverse Piezoelectric Effect Related Device Failures, Deepthi Nagulapally, Ravi P. Joshi, Aswini Pradhan
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The Inverse Piezoelectric Effect (IPE) is thought to contribute to possible device failure of GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs). Here we focus on a simulation study to probe the possible mitigation of the IPE by reducing the internal electric fields and related elastic energy through the use of high-k materials. Inclusion of a HfO2 "cap layer" above the AlGaN barrier particularly with a partial mesa structure is shown to have potential advantages. Simulations reveal even greater reductions in the internal electric fields by using "field plates" in concert with high-k oxides

Star-Crossed Cube: An Alternative To Star Graph, Nibedita Adhikari, Chitta Ranjan Tripathy
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper introduces a new interconnection network topology called the star-crossed cube (SCQ). The SCQ is observed to be superior to other contemporary networks in terms of various topological parameters such as diameter, cost, average distance, and message traffic density. The various performance metrics of the proposed network, including cost effectiveness and time-cost effectiveness, are found to be better. The optimal routing and broadcasting algorithms for the new network are also presented. Embedding properties for the proposed network are also studied.

A Low-Carbon Energy Blueprint for the American West (Martz Summer Conference, June 6-8)
The future of the planet may depend upon our ability to increase energy supplies even as we reduce carbon emissions. This conference will address how a low-carbon energy program might evolve with a particular focus on the American West. It will focus on the future of energy in the West--on a “managed transition” to a different energy mix, on the need to nest this effort in a framework that acknowledges interconnections, and on identifying the most salient opportunities to consider the legal, political, financial, and technical challenges.

Experimental And Numerical Investigations Of Tubular-Shaped Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (Dmfcs), Travis R. Ward
Experimental And Numerical Investigations Of Tubular-Shaped Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (Dmfcs), Travis R. Ward
Master's Theses
This study focuses on both the numerical and experimental investigations of the novel, passively operated, tubular-shaped, Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) as an alternative geometry to the traditional planar-shaped fuel cell. The benefit of the tubular geometry compared to the planar geometry is the higher instantaneous volumetric power density provided by the larger active area, which could be beneficial in applications that require a high instantaneous power while occupying a small volume. First, a two-dimensional, two-phase, non-isothermal model was developed to investigate the steady-state performance and design characteristics of a tubular-shaped, passive DMFC. It was found that a higher ambient …

Link Scheduling In Multi-Transmit-Receive Wireless Networks, Hong-Ning Dai, Soung Chang Liew, Liqun Fu
Hong-Ning Dai
This paper investigates the problem of link scheduling to meet traffic demands with minimum airtime in a multitransmit-receive (MTR) wireless network. MTR networks are a new class of networks, in which each node can simultaneously transmit to a number of other nodes, or simultaneously receive from a number of other nodes. The MTR capability can be enabled by the use of multiple directional antennas or multiple channels. Potentially, MTR can boost the network capacity significantly. However, link scheduling that makes full use of the MTR capability must be in place before this can happen. We show that optimal link scheduling …

Byzantine Fault Tolerance For Nondeterministic Applications, Bo Chen
Byzantine Fault Tolerance For Nondeterministic Applications, Bo Chen
ETD Archive
The growing reliance on online services accessible on the Internet demands highly reliable system that would not be interrupted when encountering faults. A number of Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) algorithms have been developed to mask the most complicated type of faults - Byzantine faults such as software bugs, operator mistakes, and malicious attacks, which are usually the major cause of service interruptions. However, it is often difficult to apply these algorithms to practical applications because such applications often exhibit sophisticated non-deterministic behaviors that the existing BFT algorithms could not cope with. In this thesis, we propose a classification of common types …
