Optimal Geothermal Heat Extraction Using Co2, Iti Patel, Jeffrey Bielicki Apr 2016

Optimal Geothermal Heat Extraction Using Co2, Iti Patel, Jeffrey Bielicki

CO2 Summit II: Technologies and Opportunities

Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and storage (CCS) systems alleviate global climate change through the subsurface storage of CO2 emission. This CCS technology can be costly, but CO2 Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) approaches can decrease the cost of CCS, because sequestered CO2 is used to produce an economically viable commodity. In one CCUS application, CO2 that is sequestered in sedimentary basins during the CCS process can be used to extract geothermal heat that can then be used to generate a profit1,2. These CO2-geothermal systems rely on the temperature of …

Optimal Scheduling Of Pev Charging/Discharging In Microgrids With Combined Objectives, Chong Cao, Ming Cheng, Bo Chen Apr 2016

Optimal Scheduling Of Pev Charging/Discharging In Microgrids With Combined Objectives, Chong Cao, Ming Cheng, Bo Chen

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

While renewable power generation and vehicle electrification are promising solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it faces great challenges to effectively integrate them in a power grid. The weather-dependent power generation of renewable energy sources, such as Photovoltaic (PV) arrays, could introduce significant intermittency to a power grid. Meanwhile, uncontrolled PEV charging may cause load surge in a power grid. This paper studies the optimization of PEV charging/discharging scheduling to reduce customer cost and improve grid performance. Optimization algorithms are developed for three cases: 1) minimize cost, 2) minimize power deviation from a pre-defined power profile, and 3) combine objective …

Optimization Of Wireless Power Networks For Biomedical Applications, Kyle A. Thackston Apr 2016

Optimization Of Wireless Power Networks For Biomedical Applications, Kyle A. Thackston

Open Access Theses

Successful physiological integration of electronics will open the doors to new methods of treatment and diagnoses. One of the key challenges of this integration is designing devices as small as possible while still maintaining high functionality, such as bio-signal recording, processing, telemetry, and stimulation. Wireless power transfer (WPT) can help shrink a device’s footprint by removing the need for bulky batteries. While many modalities of WPT exist for biomedical applications, the optimal power transfer efficiency (PTE) is seldom achieved due to improper impedance matching. Existing methods for determining the optimal impedance matching conditions tend to be application specific and make …

There are many different route-optimization issues that logistical companies consistently face, as well as many different solutions and algorithms. With technology on the rise, pick-up, delivery, and transportation services are become a huge part of our everyday lives. When optimizing routes, reducing transportation costs by minimizing travel distance is always ideal, but other factors must be considered such as arriving at a location before or after a certain time. Our objective is to optimize driving routes based on travel distance and priorities. We …

An Automated Method For Optimizing Compressor Blade Tuning, Kurt Berlin Hinkle Mar 2016

An Automated Method For Optimizing Compressor Blade Tuning, Kurt Berlin Hinkle

Theses and Dissertations

Because blades in jet engine compressors are subject to dynamic loads based on the engine's speed, it is essential that the blades are properly "tuned" to avoid resonance at those frequencies to ensure safe operation of the engine. The tuning process can be time consuming for designers because there are many parameters controlling the geometry of the blade and, therefore, its resonance frequencies. Humans cannot easily optimize design spaces consisting of multiple variables, but optimization algorithms can effectively optimize a design space with any number of design variables. Automated blade tuning can reduce design time while increasing the fidelity and …

Shortest Path Based Decision Making Using Probabilistic Inference, Akshat Kumar Feb 2016

Shortest Path Based Decision Making Using Probabilistic Inference, Akshat Kumar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a new perspective on the classical shortest path routing (SPR) problem in graphs. We show that the SPR problem can be recast to that of probabilistic inference in a mixture of simple Bayesian networks. Maximizing the likelihood in this mixture becomes equivalent to solving the SPR problem. We develop the well known Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm for the SPR problem that maximizes the likelihood, and show that it does not get stuck in a locally optimal solution. Using the same probabilistic framework, we then address an NP-Hard network design problem where the goal is to repair a network of …

Optimization Of Transmission Line Measurement (Tlm) Structures For Specific Contact Resistivity Determination, Sidhant Grover Jan 2016

Optimization Of Transmission Line Measurement (Tlm) Structures For Specific Contact Resistivity Determination, Sidhant Grover

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Low resistance ohmic contacts are of extreme importance to modern semiconductor devices. As device sizes continue to shrink, it implies a reduction in the specific contact resistance pc. There are various methods for the measurement of pc, however the Transmission Line Model (TLM) is most popularly used to determine the specific contact resistivity for Integrated Circuits (IC) and Silicon Photovoltaics (PV) applications. Inconsistencies have been observed in literature between IC and PV devices as pc determination may depend on dimensions. Therefore, TLM test geometries need to optimized in order to minimize error. Optimimum values of …

Modeling And Optimization Of High-Performance Polymer Membrane Reactor Systems For Water–Gas Shift Reaction Applications, Andrew J. Radcliffe, Rajinder P. Singh, Kathryn A. Berchtold, Fernando V. Lima Jan 2016

Modeling And Optimization Of High-Performance Polymer Membrane Reactor Systems For Water–Gas Shift Reaction Applications, Andrew J. Radcliffe, Rajinder P. Singh, Kathryn A. Berchtold, Fernando V. Lima

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In production of electricity from coal, integrated gasification combined cycle plants typically operate with conventional packed bed reactors for the water-gas shift reaction, and a Selexol process for carbon dioxide removal. Implementation of membrane reactors in place of these two process units provides advantages such as increased carbon monoxide conversion, facilitated CO2 removal/sequestration and process intensification. Proposed H2-selective membranes for these reactors are typically of palladium alloy or ceramic due to their outstanding gas separation properties; however, on an industrial scale, the cost of such materials may become exorbitant. High-performance polymeric membranes, such as polybenzimidazoles (PBIs), present themselves as low-cost …

Power Control And Beamforming Design For Swipt In Af Two-Way Relay Networks, Wei Wang, Rui Wang, Hani Mehrpouyan, Guoan Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we study the problem of joint power control and beamforming design for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in an amplify-and-forward (AF) based two-way relaying (TWR) network. The considered system model consists of two source nodes and a relay node. Two single-antenna source nodes receive information and energy simultaneously via power splitting (PS) from the signals sent by a multi-antenna relay node. Our objective is to maximize the weighted sum power at the two source nodes subject to quality of service (QoS) constraints and the transmit power constraints. However, the joint optimization of the relay beamforming …

A Parametric Study Of Meso-Scale Patterns For Auxetic Mechanical Behavior Optimization, Matthew C. Schuler Jan 2016

A Parametric Study Of Meso-Scale Patterns For Auxetic Mechanical Behavior Optimization, Matthew C. Schuler

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis focuses on the development, parameterization and optimization of a novel meso-scale pattern used to induce auxetic behavior, i.e., negative Poisson's ratio, at the bulk scale. Currently, the majority of auxetic structures are too porous to be utilized in conventional load-bearing applications. For others, manufacturing methods have yet to realize the meso-scale pattern. Consequently, new auxetic structures must be developed in order to confer superior thermo-mechanical responses to structures at high temperature. Additionally, patterns that take into account manufacturing limitations, while maintaining the properties characteristically attached to negative Poisson's Ratio materials, are ideal in order to utilize the potential …

Data Mining And Mathematical Models For Direct Market Campaign Optimization For Fred Meyer Jewelers, Lebin Lin

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Jewelry retail companies like Fred Meyer Jewelers employ direct marketing such as mailing lists and catalogs as a primary means to promote products, maintain customer relationships, and drive sale growths. Most jewelry customers, however, do not purchase frequently – they make only a limited number of purchases at special times with long lead-times between purchases. This has created a series of challenging problems for the marketing team at these jewelry stores in a) predicting when and what the customer purchases, and b) deciding what customers to be targeted so as to maximize the return on investment in the design of …

Economic Analysis Of A Data Center Virtual Power Plant Participating In Demand Response, Labi Bajracharya Jan 2016

Economic Analysis Of A Data Center Virtual Power Plant Participating In Demand Response, Labi Bajracharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Data centers consume a significant amount of energy from the grid, and the number of data centers are increasing at a high rate. As the amount of demand on the transmission system increases, network congestion reduces the economic efficiency of the grid and begins to risk failure. Data centers have underutilized energy resources, such as backup generators and battery storage, which can be used for demand response (DR) to benefit both the electric power system and the data center. Therefore, data center energy resources, including renewable energy, are aggregated and controlled using an energy management system (EMS) to operate as …

Finite Element Analysis And Topology Optimization Of Differential Case And Control Arm For Static And Fatigue Loading, Pankaj N. Kalan

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Optimization of the automobile components can result in a significant decrease in vehicle weight, increase in fuel efficiency and reduction in environmental damage. For example, the lightweight vehicle production will save over 4.4×109 GJ of energy and 4.1×108 tons of CO2 over a 10 year period, compared to the current non-light weight vehicles. This equates to 890 billion miles or 42 billion gallons of gas savings (Wu 2016). This study evaluates the weight reduction possible by using manual and automatic (using Optistruct software) topology optimization processes. Optimization of a vehicle differential case done in this study shows that a weight …
