Uncertainty Quantification And Constraint Of Chemical Kinetic Mechanisms Based On Flow Reactor Experiments, Ana Victoria Kock Oct 2023

Uncertainty Quantification And Constraint Of Chemical Kinetic Mechanisms Based On Flow Reactor Experiments, Ana Victoria Kock

Theses and Dissertations

The chemical kinetic model is one of key sub-models for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation for optimizing and designing various combustors/engines. Detailed chemical kinetic models can consist of hundreds of species and thousands of elementary reaction steps. Considering the complexity in these detailed chemical kinetic models, it is important to quantify and minimize the uncertainties in the kinetic parameters. The uncertainties in the kinetic models can then be compared to uncertainties tied to experimental measurements. This approach has been frequently applied for relatively simple combustion parameters (e.g., laminar flame speed, ignition delay time), however it has not been well utilized …

Optimal Concrete Mix Design And Finish For Skateboarding Performance, Lohgan Christoper Spencer Jun 2023

A Hybrid Unsupervised Clustering-Based Anomaly Detection Method, Guo Pu, Lijuan Wang, Jun Shen, Fang Dong

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In recent years, machine learning-based cyber intrusion detection methods have gained increasing popularity. The number and complexity of new attacks continue to rise; therefore, effective and intelligent solutions are necessary. Unsupervised machine learning techniques are particularly appealing to intrusion detection systems since they can detect known and unknown types of attacks as well as zero-day attacks. In the current paper, we present an unsupervised anomaly detection method, which combines Sub-Space Clustering (SSC) and One Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM) to detect attacks without any prior knowledge. The proposed approach is evaluated using the well-known NSL-KDD dataset. The experimental results demonstrate …

Decision-Making Under Conditions Of Definition And Risk Based On Strict Methods, O.V. Porubay

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

In this paper, the problems of decision-making in conditions of certainty and risk based on strict methods are considered. The classification of methods of decision theory is presented, taking into account the uncertainty and related subjectivity in evaluating decision options. Strict methods are considered, which include methods of mathematical optimization, or mathematical programming, designed to solve single- or multi-criteria problems of finding the optimal solution. Thus, based on computational experiments, we can conclude that strict methods are usually used in decision-making under conditions of certainty and possibly risk, heuristic methods in conditions of risk and uncertainty, and also if strict …

Zechipc: Time Series Interpolation Method Based On Lebesgue Sampling, Luis Miralles-Pechuán, Muhammad Atif Qureshi, Matthieu Bellucci, Brian Mac Namee

Books/Book Chapters

In this paper, we present an interpolation method based on Lebesgue sampling that could help to develop systems based time series more efficiently. Our methods can transmit times series, frequently used in health monitoring, with the same level of accuracy but using much fewer data. Our method is based in Lebesgue sampling, which collects information depending on the values of the signal (e.g. the signal output is sampled when it crosses specific limits). Lebesgue sampling contains additional information about the shape of the signal in-between two sampled points. Using this information would allow generating an interpolated signal closer to the …

Computational Methods For Bicubic L1 Splines, Priyesh Koyu Rai Jan 2019

Computational Methods For Bicubic L1 Splines, Priyesh Koyu Rai

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The past two decades have seen the development of L1 splines for interpolation and approximation of geometric data. L1 splines have been shown to preserve shapes better than the conventional L2 splines, especially for data with abrupt changes in the magnitude of spacing. Efficient computation plays an important role in the practical application of L1 splines. This thesis creates new computational methods for constructing bicubic L1 interpolating splines and bicubic L1 spline fits. The bicubic splines in this study are piecewise bicubic polynomials defined on a rectangular grid generated by the tensor product of nodes. We developed a hybrid computational …

A Method Of Uncertainty Analysis For Whole-Life Embodied Carbon Emissions (Co2-E) Of Building Materials Of A Net-Zero Energy Building In Australia, Mehdi Robati, Daniel J. Daly, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The construction of new buildings requires the use of a substantial amount of materials, which have an associated embodied energy for manufacturing, transport, construction and end-of-life disposal. A number of inventories have been developed to collate the typical embodied energy or carbon emissions associated with different building materials and activities, and these can be used to quantify the environmental impacts of different construction methods. However, uncertainty exists in the estimation of embodied CO2-e emissions and other environmental impact results, due to i) inconsistencies in typical embodied carbon emissions values in inventories; ii) errors in estimations of material quantities; iii) assumptions …

Ensemble Neural Network Method For Wind Speed Forecasting, Binbin Yong, Fei Qiao, Chen Wang, Jun Shen, Yongqiang Wei, Qingguo Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Wind power generation has gradually developed into an important approach of energy supply. Meanwhile, due to the difficulty of electricity storage, wind power is greatly affected by the real-time wind speed in wind fields. Generally, wind speed has the characteristics of nonlinear, irregular, and non-stationary, which make accurate wind speed forecasting a difficult problem. Recent studies have shown that ensemble forecasting approaches combining different sub-models is an efficient way to solve the problem. Therefore, in this article, two single models are ensembled for wind speed forecasting. Meanwhile, four data pre-processing hybrid models are combined with the reliability weights. The proposed …

Ethics Education In Engineering: Practices On And Off The Campus, Katherine Theis

Undergraduate Voices

This paper will focus on two major methods for educating engineers in ethics. It is important to realize that two sets of standards exist within the field of engineering, both from the professional standards set within industries and from the personal moral standards held by engineers themselves. This article first examines the education of ethics within the workplace as some engineers have no previous training in ethics. Second, it discusses how ethics is introduced to engineers through university undergraduate and graduate courses. It will also evaluate whether ethics courses are more effective than the real-world application found through the professional …

Human Action Segmentation Based On A Streaming Uniform Entropy Slice Method, Cheng Peng, Sio-Long Lo, Jie Huang, Ah Chung Tsoi Jan 2018

Human Action Segmentation Based On A Streaming Uniform Entropy Slice Method, Cheng Peng, Sio-Long Lo, Jie Huang, Ah Chung Tsoi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Segmentation of human actions is a major research problem in video understanding. A number of existing approaches demonstrate that performing action segmentation before action recognition results in better recognition performance. In this paper, we address the problem of action segmentation in an online manner. We first extend the clustering-based image segmentation approach into a temporal one, where hierarchical supervoxel levels for action segmentation are generated accordingly. We then propose a streaming approach to flatten the hierarchical levels into one based on Uniform Entropy Slice (UES), in order to preserve important information in the video. The flattened level contains the silhouette …

With the aim of preparing high performance oxide-dispersion-strengthened tungsten based alloys by powder metallurgy, the W-Y 2 O 3 composite nanopowder precursor was fabricated by an improved wet chemical method with anion surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) addition. It is found that the employment of SDS can dramatically decrease W grain size (about 40 nm) and improve the size uniformity. What's more, SDS addition can also remarkably improve the uniform dispersion of Y 2 O 3 particles during the synthesis process. For the alloy whose powder precursor was fabricated by traditional wet chemical method without SDS addition, only a few …

A Sound Idea: An Investigation Into Accessible Video Game Design For The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing, Luke James Brook

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

A widely accepted, and incorrect, assumption towards hearing accessibility in video games is that deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) users are those who encounter the least barriers and are generally well catered for. Rapid advancement in video game technology has seen video game sound evolve from simple blips generated by internal circuitry to fully realised digital audio used to convey critical information. To accommodate the DHH, this information needs to be conveyed in an alternative manner. However, evidence suggests existing accessible design solutions for the DHH lack specificity and are insufficient. Thus, the inability to hear, or hear well, …
