A Holistic Approach To Lowering Latency In Geo-Distributed Web Applications, Shankaranarayanan Puzhavakath Narayanan Aug 2016

A Holistic Approach To Lowering Latency In Geo-Distributed Web Applications, Shankaranarayanan Puzhavakath Narayanan

Open Access Dissertations

User perceived end-to-end latency of web applications have a huge impact on the revenue for many businesses. The end-to-end latency of web applications is impacted by: (i) User to Application server (front-end) latency which includes downloading and parsing web pages, retrieving further objects requested by javascript executions; and (ii) Application and storage server(back-end) latency which includes retrieving meta-data required for an initial rendering, and subsequent content based on user actions.

Improving the user-perceived performance of web applications is challenging, given their complex operating environments involving user-facing web servers, content distribution network (CDN) servers, multi-tiered application servers, and storage servers. Further, …

Development Of A Web Application For Continuous Analysis Of Many Cameras (Cam2), Anurag Anjaria, Dr. Yung-Hsiang Lu, Young-Sol Koh, Charles Hansen Aug 2015

Development Of A Web Application For Continuous Analysis Of Many Cameras (Cam2), Anurag Anjaria, Dr. Yung-Hsiang Lu, Young-Sol Koh, Charles Hansen

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

There are tens of thousands of web cameras located around the world and publicly available on the Internet. The images captured by these cameras contain data relating to our living environment such as traffic patterns, weather and crowd movement. Researchers can capture this data using image analysis techniques on the video and image from these cameras. However, there is a lack of a single, unified repository of all the public cameras on the Internet; this, coupled with the computational demands of image analysis means there is a need for a tool to help researchers perform large-scale image analyis on many …

An Efficient Certificateless Encryption For Secure Data Sharing In Public Clouds, Seung-Hyun Seo, Mohamed Yoosuf Mohamed Nabeel, Xiaoyu Ding, Elisa Bertino Sep 2014

An Efficient Certificateless Encryption For Secure Data Sharing In Public Clouds, Seung-Hyun Seo, Mohamed Yoosuf Mohamed Nabeel, Xiaoyu Ding, Elisa Bertino

Cyber Center Publications

We propose a mediated certificateless encryption scheme without pairing operations for securely sharing sensitive information in public clouds. Mediated certificateless public key encryption (mCL-PKE) solves the key escrow problem in identity based encryption and certificate revocation problem in public key cryptography. However, existing mCL-PKE schemes are either inefficient because of the use of expensive pairing operations or vulnerable against partial decryption attacks. In order to address the performance and security issues, in this paper, we first propose a mCL-PKE scheme without using pairing operations. We apply our mCL-PKE scheme to construct a practical solution to the problem of sharing sensitive …

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of A Campus Computing Grid, Preston M. Smith Apr 2011

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of A Campus Computing Grid, Preston M. Smith

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Any major research institution has a substantial number of computer systems on its campus, often in the scale of tens of thousands. Given that a large amount of scientific computing is appropriate for execution in an opportunistic environment, a campus grid is an inexpensive way to build a powerful computational resource. What is missing, though, is a model for making an informed decision on the cost-effectives of a campus grid. In this thesis, the author describes a model for measuring the costs and benefits of building a campus computing resource based on the institution’s existing investment in computing hardware.
