A Method To Accelerate Rock Breakage With Soundless Chemical Demolition Agents, Patrick A. Darko, Hani S. Mitri
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDA) are recognized as a safe and sustainable alternative for rock breakage, with the potential to reduce reliance on explosives in mining. However, their mechanical performance is considerably hampered in the extreme cold climate, with slow or no rock fracturing observed. To overcome this deficiency, two methods were developed in recent studies by 1) electric heating the SCDA borehole with high-temperature wire, and 2) increasing the SCDA mixing water temperature. Good results were obtained with both methods. This paper explores the merits of a hybrid approach combining the two methods to further enhance the SCDA efficiency …

Biosensors For Biomedicine, Drake O'Leary
Miners Solving for Tomorrow Research Conference
This project investigated the use of engineered bacterial reporter systems to detect cellular stress responses associated with antibiotic activity. While constructs were successfully introduced and tested against known antibiotics, the reporter consistently produced a blue signal across conditions, limiting the ability to distinguish specific stress responses. This suggests issues such as leaky expression, insufficient regulatory control, or lack of specificity in the reporter design. Although results were inconclusive, this work highlights key challenges in developing reliable biosensors and provides a foundation for future optimization. Improving signal specificity and reducing background expression will be critical for enabling accurate characterization of antibiotic …

Fuel Flexibility, Gas Turbine Combustion, Laser Diagnostics, Lean Blow-Out, Austin Thomas Shealy
Theses and Dissertations
To address increasing global energy consumption, energy industries seek to implement alternative fuels and increase energy generation efficiencies to meet energy demands. However, alternative and bioderived fuels present both chemical and physical properties significantly different from traditional hydrocarbon fuels typically used for gas turbine power generation. Consequently, they present unforeseen technical challenges. To address these challenges, ammonia has been suggested for use as a hydrogen carrier fuel in gas turbines. Ammonia presents many challenges by having a low overall reactivity as well as low energy density both by mass and volume. To address ammonia’s unique combustion characteristics, two strategies have …

How Do Social Network Models Compare To All-To-All Models For Forecasting Tuberculosis Epidemics? A Mathematical Modeling Study, Masabho Peter Milali, Hae-Young Kim, George Corliss, Anna Bershteyn
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Background. Mathematical models guide tuberculosis (TB) target-setting, yet most assume homogeneous “all-to-all” mixing. We compared projected intervention impacts between an all-to-all compartmental model and a Barabási–Albert (BA) scale‑free social network model under otherwise identical disease assumptions.
Methods. We calibrated transmission parameters so both models produced similar baseline trends, then introduced vaccination (coverage 30–70%; efficacy 80–95%) and treatment (20–50% increases in recovery) after a 400‑day burn‑in. Outcomes were assessed 300 days post‑intervention.
Results. Under 60% coverage, increasing vaccine efficacy from 80% to 95% yielded smaller projected reductions in active TB with the network model than with all‑to‑all mixing. Treatment improvements showed …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Software Size Measurement (SSM) is crucial for estimating required project effort as well as budget and schedule. However, many small and medium-sized companies struggle to apply objective SSM due to limited resources and lack of expertise. This often leads to inaccurate estimates and project overruns. There is a need for practical, low-resource solutions that support these tasks without requiring expert involvement. Motivated by this challenge, this study proposes an automated software size measurement approach that formulates the measurement task as supervised regression over natural language requirements, using domain-adapted transformer models. We construct large-scale Turkish and English software engineering corpora to …

Symmetry And Scale: The Precise Engineering Of Chitosan-Based Polyhedral For The Delivery Of Therapeutic Materials At The Nanoscale, Ahmed. J. Jasim, Noor Malik Saadoon
AUIQ Technical Engineering Science
Preparation of chitosan-based drug delivery carriers requires converting linear polysaccharide chains into individual 3D objects. By building on the natural structural properties of chitin-based polymers, in addition to control the geometry of organically derived raw material from feedstock to submicron polyhedral or spherical dimensions. This geometric change is governed by a surface area-to-volume ratio that maximizes the exposure of the therapeutic payload to the external environment. The approach centres on the development of such carriers using ion-complexation and emulsification methodologies, which involve electrostatic cross-linking of ion-binding pairs to define an impenetrable boundary separating a liquid from a solid phase. Critical …

Life-Cycle-Oriented Selection Framework For Solar Shading Devices In Hot–Arid Building Façades: From Traditional Precedents To Pv-Integrated Systems, Sameh Ahmed Qadry
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Abstract
This study proposes a life-cycle–oriented, computationally light framework for selecting solar shading devices in hot–arid building façades. While previous research has extensively analysed shading performance using detailed simulations, most studies focus on single systems or materials, rarely comparing traditional, modern, and PVintegrated solutions within a unified life-cycle and operation–maintenance perspective. The research addresses this gap by integrating three shading families—traditional local precedents (e.g. mashrabiya, rawshan), modern fixed and dynamic systems, and hybrid PV-integrated façades—into a comparative decision-support framework tailored to hot–arid climates. Methodologically, the study combines: (1) a structured descriptive–analytical literature review with analytical coding of key attributes (design …
