Developing A 4d Logistics Educational Module With Cmbuilder, Misael Gonzalez Ramirez
Construction Management
The increasing adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the construction industry has led to a need for its increasing integration into construction management education. While existing curriculum covers various BIM applications, there is often a gap in in-depth instruction on BIM-based site logistics planning. This paper details the development of an educational module designed to address this gap, focusing on 4D site logistics and phasing using cmBuilder. The module aims not only to provide students with technical software skills but also to equip them with practical skills in visualizing, planning, and communicating complex construction site logistics. Through a series …

Bird Strikes During Climb And Approach: A Need For Innovative Management Strategies, Richard A. Dolbeer, Michael J. Begier
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Wildlife Hazard Management Plans at civil airports in the United States cannot directly address threats posed by birds moving through aircraft climb and approach paths unrelated to nearby bird-attractant habitats such as landfills. As an iconic example, an Airbus 320 departing LaGuardia Airport (New York, USA) on January 15, 2009, struck a flock of migratory Canada geese (Branta canadensis) 8 km out at 884 m above ground level (AGL) that resulted in a water landing now known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.” We documented 1,841 and 458 strikes from 2009 to 2023 involving large (≥1.8 kg) and …

Understanding the transport and retention of elastic nanogel and microgel particles in porous media has been a significant research subject for decades, essential to the application of enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, a lack of dynamic adsorption and desorption studies, in which the kinetics in porous media are seldom investigated, hinders the design and application of polymer nanogel in underground porous media. In this work, we visualized and quantified the transport and dynamic adsorption of polymer nanogel in 3D glass micromodels that were manufactured by packing glass beads in capillaries. Calibrating the linearity of fluorescence intensity to concentration, we calculated …

The effect of gating system design on the inclusion population and size distribution in an aluminum-killed low-alloy advanced high strength steel casting was studied. A mold with four different gating systems: pressurized and non-pressurized with side risers, naturally pressurized with a side riser, and naturally pressurized with a top riser, was designed using computational fluid dynamics and solidification software. The design allowed inclusion populations in castings produced with each gating system to be compared during the same pouring event. Samples taken from different positions just below the top surface of each casting were analyzed using an SEM/EDS system with automated …

Viscoelastic materials have extensive military applications due to their energy absorption capabilities, with the potential to reduce blast energy imposed on buildings, vehicles, and personnel. Based on current literature, limited information is available regarding the mitigation of blast energy related to these uses. The impact of thickness, nanoparticle addition, and layering variation was assessed in this study using commercially available viscoelastic materials in open-air blasts of Composition C4 to determine shock energy mitigation capabilities. Time-pressure waveforms were recorded to identify optimal changes in shock wave characteristics: reduced peak pressure, positive phase duration, and impulse, with increased rise times. Results were …

Application Of Gurney And Flight Of Fragment Calculations For Water Jet Velocities In Explosive Applications, Rachel L. Bauer, Tate B. Friedrich, Catherine E. Johnson
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study investigates the application of Gurney and flight of fragment equations, typically used to predict metal fragment velocities, in modeling the water jet behavior. Three shotgun cartridge sizes were used as the energy source: 2.59 g, 5.83 g, and 7.13 g. Two configurations were tested: standard (full-barrel water load) and "negative 8" (partial water load). High-speed footage captured water column velocities, and Gurney models, including infinitely tamped and open-faced configurations, combined with the flight of fragment model were used to assess prediction accuracy. Results showed charge strength significantly affects water column velocity, with higher strengths yielding greater stability and …

Optimizing Hy Wet Ball Mill Efficiency Using Response Surface Methodology, Peng Chen, Ying Hou, Hongxu Lv, Ahmed Sobhy
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study uses response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite design to optimize the HY wet ball mill work index. Key operational parameters—ore quantity, water addition, and media proportion—were systematically investigated. Variance analysis identified these factors as statistically significant (p < 0.0001), with ore quantity exhibiting the strongest influence (F value = 82.67). Optimal conditions (water addition: 1083.880 mL, media filling rate: 40.362%, ore quantity: 1827.130 g) achieved a minimum work index of 10.195 kW h t−1. Validation tests confirmed the model's accuracy, yielding an average work index of 10.168 kW h t−1 (deviation: 0.027 kW h t−1). Compared to single-factor tests, RSM optimization reduced energy consumption by 3.76% (0.3975 kW h t−1), translating to annual savings of $214,000 for a mid-sized processing plant. This demonstrates RSM's efficacy in …

High-precision dynamic sensing is critical in fields, such as industrial automation, structural health monitoring, and environmental sensing, where real-time responses to minuscule changes can prevent system failures or optimize performance. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate a phase-variation coaxial cable resonator (CCR) as a highly sensitive sensor for dynamic sensing applications. As a proof of concept, a prototype device based on a custom-designed CCR is thoroughly investigated for dynamic displacement measurements, as displacement is a fundamental quantity essential to numerous applications. The sensor consists of two components: a static CCR device and a movable conducting plate. As the conducting …

Prescribed-Time Nash Equilibrium Seeking For Pursuit-Evasion Game Under Intermittent Control With Undirected/Directed Graph, Lei Xue, Jianfeng Ye, Yongbao Wu, Jian Liu, D. C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper studies the prescribed-time Nash equilibrium (PTNE) seeking problem of the pursuit-evasion game (PEG) with second-order dynamics under the intermittent control (IC) strategy. To achieve Nash equilibrium (NE) in a user-defined prescribed-time, a time-varying high-gain function is incorporated into the design. The core challenge lies in applying IC to NE seeking, which complicates the convergence analysis and control design. To address this sticking point, we construct an auxiliary function and propose a Lyapunov function considering second-order dynamics to solve the PTNE seeking problem of PEG. Building upon the results for undirected graphs, we further extend our findings to directed …

Displacement is a pivotal physical parameter, and advancements in displacement sensor technology have enabled the creation of a diverse array of physical and mechanical sensors through seamless integration with mechanical transducers. In this study, we introduce a displacement sensing technique leveraging an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) assisted microwave photonic filter. By translating displacement-induced variations in the EFPI's optical reflection into peak frequency shifts within its frequency response, we achieve large-dynamic-range displacement measurements with outstanding signal quality and demodulation ease. Proof-of-concept demonstrations showcase a substantial 5 mm range with a remarkable sensitivity of 1.148 GHz/mm, achieved using a basic single-mode fiber-based …

Conventionally, a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is designed for islanded mode (IM) operation to meet specific operational requirements such as the rate of change of frequency (RoCoF). However, the operation of VSG designed for IM may not meet the operational and control criteria in grid connected mode (GCM) when the grid conditions vary. In addition, conventional VSG control technology does not consider the influence of the presynchronization scheme when connected to a weak grid, which degrades the RoCoF in IM. To overcome the aforementioned challenges, the proposed study presents a twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm to improve the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Intensity-modulated optical fiber sensors (IM-OFSs) have garnered significant research interest due to their advantageous characteristics, including simplified fabrication procedures, cost-efficient systems, and straightforward signal demodulation, leading to their widespread application across diverse fields. Nevertheless, the multiplexing technique for IM-OFSs remains underexplored, primarily because isolating the contributions of individual sensors within the system using traditional power measurements poses a significant challenge. In this study, we introduce and experimentally validate a novel approach leveraging a simple microwave-photonic fiber ring resonator (MWP-FRR). This approach enables the concurrent interrogation of two IM-OFSs based on an in-and-out-of-ring-modulation (IORM) strategy. The transmission losses of both IM-OFSs …

Ensuring accurate traffic perception and road safety in complex urban environments remains a significant challenge. Advanced traffic monitoring increasingly relies on deep learning, which requires large data volumes. However, existing datasets are often limited to CCTV video footage or focus on dynamic scenarios captured by sensors mounted on ego vehicles. This narrow perspective reduces the effectiveness of comprehensive traffic monitoring, particularly for LiDAR sensors, which typically capture only the vehicle's viewpoint and miss critical areas such as intersections and pedestrian crossings. To address these limitations, we propose a holistic strategy for rapid data collection in urban settings using simulated 3D …

Within the last two decades, additive manufacturing (AM), a. k.a. 3D printing, has provided promising solutions for producing near-net-shape components with intricate geometries. From the material perspective, titanium alloys, one of humankind's most essential structural materials, are being considered the first candidate for AMed parts due to their unique characteristics in strength-weight-corrosion combinations. However, measuring the mechanical properties of designed geometry remains a challenge due to the ineffectiveness of conventional standard tensile specimens in assessing the site-specific and intricate geometries. In AM, the current approach often consists of evaluating standard-sized samples with the assumption that components with complex geometries possess …
Aperture-Based Fss For Dielectric Thickness Sensing, Alexander Hook, Gage Donahue, Kristen M. Donnell
Aperture-Based Fss For Dielectric Thickness Sensing, Alexander Hook, Gage Donahue, Kristen M. Donnell
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) are planar arrays of patch- or aperture-based elements that have a particular transmissive or reflective response. As FSS performance is affected by changes in the local (to the FSS) environment, FSSs may be used to detect changes in strain, temperature, or nearby material (substructure) thickness, amongst other parameters. To this end, an aperture-based FSS can be considered as a sensor for substructure thickness monitoring for surface mounted sensing scenarios. An aperture-based design was selected due to its ability to operate in reflection mode (and hence a one-sided measurement) without the need for a conductive backplane. In …

Enhancing Fiber Optic Interferometric Sensing With Microwave Photonics-Based Dispersion Fourier Transform And Integrated Magnitude–Phase Analysis, Chen Zhu, Ruimin Jie, Chenxi Huang, Jie Huang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Fiber optic inline interferometers are widely used for high-precision sensing due to their sensitivity, compactness, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Traditional optical spectral analysis methods suffer from limited dynamic range due to free spectral range (FSR) constraints, while microwave photonic filtering (MPF) techniques based on dispersion Fourier transform (DFT) provide an alternative by mapping optical signals into the radio frequency (RF) domain. However, conventional passband frequency tracking in MPF systems has limited sensitivity, and the recently demonstrated phase-based methods, though highly sensitive, are constrained by phase wrapping beyond 2π. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an integrated magnitude–phase …

In many industries, digital twinning has become an indispensable element of advanced technologies. However, digital twins are heavily reliant on extensive Internet of Things (IoT) sensor measurement data to function effectively. Consequently, data mining has become a lucrative endeavor, akin to gold rushes in the XIX century. However, the substantial volume of collected data often stresses the storage capacities for smaller to medium-sized enterprises, necessitating efficient compression techniques. Error-bound lossy compression offers substantial data reduction advantages, but introduces distortion that, when uncontrolled, can adversely affect analysis. This paper proposes an information optimization scheme that employs information entropy as a comprehensive …

Design And Optimization Of A Miniaturized Spiral Antenna For Ultra-Wideband Applications, Mckennan Starkey, Cody Goins, Victor Khilkevich, Daryl Beetner
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Ultra-wideband communication in the frequency range from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz is popular for short range wireless networks. Designing a wideband antenna that covers the entire 7.5 GHz band is challenging, particularly if the antenna should be small, unobtrusive, and should effectively communicate with another antenna as their positions and orientations change. A miniaturized wideband circularly polarized Archimedean spiral antenna is developed in this study which is wideband and circularly polarized. Miniaturization and optimization techniques are introduced to enable an antenna size of $30 \text{mm} \times 30 \text{mm}$ and a thickness less than 0.5 mm.

The input/ output modes are essential for high-speed signal integrity analysis and channel simulation. This work aims to develop a method for generating an IBIS-AMI model for USB 3.0 using measurement data. Instead of requiring a specially designed motherboard with test points for specific measurements, this method uses measurement data obtained from an assembled motherboard. The only available data for measurement in this case is the output voltage waveform from the USB 3.0 port on the motherboard. To address this, a novel approach is proposed to extract all the required parameters for the IBIS-AMI model from a single available measurement …

A strategy to mitigate electromagnetic interference in quad/octal small form-factor pluggable interfaces using a common-mode/differential-mode filter is presented in this research. Differential source imbalance produces significant common- and differential-mode noise in the differential pseudorandom binary sequence signal. EMI associated with this noise can be reduced by incorporating a band stop filter onto the differential line on a printed circuit board. Two kinds of filters were tested: common mode and common/differential mode. It was demonstrated that the application of a common-mode/differential-mode filter is more advantageous than a common-mode filter and allows to achieve the suppression of the total radiated power by …

The voltage regulator module (VRM) impacts the power distribution network (PDN) impedance in the low frequency range. The effect of VRM is essential for reliable PDN analysis and simulation. However, the existing VRM models for power integrity (PI) simulation lack an in-depth understanding of the effect of the feedback control in the VRM. In this paper, the impact of the VRM control loop on the PDN impedance is investigated. The relationship between the VRM output impedance and the PDN impedance at the IC input pin is derived. The output impedance of a VRM is analyzed using small signal analysis. Eventually, …
