The Effects Of Geometric Shape And Power-Law Index On The Thermal Activity And Dynamic Behavior Of A Complex Fluid, Houssem Laidoudi
The Effects Of Geometric Shape And Power-Law Index On The Thermal Activity And Dynamic Behavior Of A Complex Fluid, Houssem Laidoudi
Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
The paper presents numerical results for non-Newtonian fluid confined horizontally between two rings. The outer ring has a circular shape, low temperature and rotates at a constant and uniform speed, while the inner ring has different shapes (circular, square and triangular), is constant and has a high temperature. This study aims to determine the method and the amount of heat transfer between the rings and under the influence of these factors: the rheological coefficient of the fluid, known as the power-law index, thermal buoyancy intensity, the rotation speed of the outer ring and the geometric shape of the inner ring. …

Electric Field Profiles Under High Voltage Overhead Transmission Lines With Under-Build Distribution Circuit, Aminu Haruna
Electrical Engineering Theses
The increasing use of underbuilt lines in recent transmission projects alters electric field profile under transmission lines. By assessing electric field intensity in these transmission and distribution network configurations, the study identifies regions with high electric fields that may exceed standard exposure limits, posing potential risks. This work employs the charge simulation method and the method of imaging to analyze electric fields beneath transmission lines with underbuilt distribution networks. Key objectives include calculating the electric fields at 1 meter above ground, and evaluating the field at conductor surfaces. The study considers transmission line voltages of 69kV, 161kV, 220kV, 345kV and …

IntroductionHumans have used wood as a construction material throughout history. Currently, mass timber products, such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), are becoming more popular as a structural material, since they are renewable and have a lower carbon footprint than concrete or steel. Nonetheless, some building types, such as healthcare, veterinary, and food manufacturing, avoid using structural mass timber due to concerns about microbial growth in the event of wetting. One solution is to use protective coatings on mass timber products to increase moisture resistance, although the coatings themselves may generate concerns about volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Natural uncoated wood also …

Visualizing Chattanooga’S Freeway Accidents: An Interactive Dashboard Built On Us National Laboratory Data*, Joshy Kasahara
Campus Research Month
Despite the availability of a freeway accident dataset collected by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), there is no interactive visualization of the data that is easily accessible to the public. Consequently, the local community's awareness of accident trends is very limited. The contribution of this research project is a dashboard that allows the visualization of traffic accidents patterns in Chattanooga, Tennessee, using datasets from national laboratory researchers. By creating an interactive web dashboard with animated and color-mapped geographical map, the project seeks to enhance community awareness of accident trends.

Many students in higher education use flashcard applications for learning large amounts of information in limited amounts of time. Many of these applications rely on spaced-repetition algorithms for memorization, which are proven to be more efficient than traditional study methods. We compared the effects of studying with a spaced-repetition application that utilizes a NLU model to calculate a user's understanding of material against the effects of studying with a spaced-repetition model that did not use NLU. We used our results to determine if replacing the self-assessment component of flashcard studying applications with a NLU model led to better memorization and …

The Effects Of The Action Rate And Binding Density On Sensitivity In Lateral Flow, Mona Soroush
Student Research Symposium
Lateral Flow Assays (LFAs) offer rapid diagnostics, yet sensitivity remains a critical limitation. This study used a mathematical framework—the Convection-Diffusion-Reaction (CDR) equation—to optimize sensitivity by adjusting parameters such as flow velocity (U), association and dissociation rates (kon and koff), and nanoparticle valency. Our simulation results closely matched literature data (Berli & Kler, 2016), demonstrating significant enhancements in sensitivity with optimized parameters.

Mathematical Modeling Of Color Perception Using Differential Equation, Siavash Pooretemad
Mathematical Modeling Of Color Perception Using Differential Equation, Siavash Pooretemad
Student Research Symposium
Color perception begins in the retina, where three cone types (L, M, S) detect light and initiate neural signals. These signals are processed by horizontal and bipolar cells to form opponent color channels: red-green (RG), yellow-blue (YB), and light-dark (LD). Perception is not solely based on physical input but also shaped by neural adaptation and context.
This project models color perception using a differential equation approach, simulating how color contrast and adaptation emerge from interactions between photoreceptors and lateral inhibition.
We hypothesize that a system of differential equations can model how retinal cone cells respond to and process light intensity, …

Multiple, Not Single, Recipient Muscle Tendon Transfers Produce Well-Coordinated Thumb-Tip Movement In Lateral Pinch Grasp: A Simulation Study With Application To Restoration Of Improved Grasp After Tetraplegia, Cole Smith , '23, Joseph D. Towles
Engineering Faculty Works
Introduction: Tendon transfer surgeries that engage the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) muscle are commonly performed to enable lateral pinch grasp in persons with tetraplegia. Functional outcomes, however, have been mixed. This may be the case, in part, because the FPL produces hyperflexion at the interphalangeal (IP) joint and radial deviation at the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. Therefore, the goal of this simulation study was to investigate whether small groups of muscles could produce movement with less IP joint hyperflexion and CMC joint ab/adduction than the FPL produces during lateral pinch grasp. Methods: We adapted a published, open-source computational musculoskeletal model of …

Examining Physiological Responses To Misophonic Triggers, Christian O'Reilly, Xuan Yang, Sewon Oh, Doug Wedell, Svetlana Shinkareva
Faculty Publications
We collected and analyzed an array of biosignals (face electromyogram, skin electrodermal activity, peripheral temperature, and electrocardiogram) in 60 participants with and without misophonia, a condition characterized by decreased tolerance to innocuous sounds. Our goal was to objectively characterize the physiological response to misophonia triggering sounds. We found that misophonic responses can be objectively identified in some cases through atypical physiological reactions to triggering stimuli, though not all participants exhibited this response. Our analyses suggest a large interindividual variability in response to misophonic triggers and highlights the need for methodological adjustments in future experiments to increase the detectability of misophonic …

Removing Eog Artifacts From Eeg Recordings Using Deep Learning, Christian O'Reilly, Scott Huberty
Faculty Publications
The electroencephalogram (EEG) directly measures the electrical activity generated by the brain. Unfortunately, it is often contaminated by various artifacts, notably those caused by eye movements and blinks (EOG artifacts). Such artifacts are usually removed using an independent component analysis (ICA) or other blind source separation techniques. However, it is difficult to assess whether subtracting EOG components estimated through ICA removes some neurogenic activity. It is crucial to address this question to avoid biasing EEG analyses. Toward that objective, we developed a deep learning model for EOG artifact removal that exploits information about eye movements available through eye-tracking (ET). Using …
