Ultimate Limit State Reliability-Based Approach Life Prediction Of An Existing Frame Structure Under Seismic Hazard In Indonesia, Wira Herucakra, Luh Putri Adnyani

Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

Life assessment integrated with Structural Integrity Management (SIM) has been implemented in the oil and gas industry for the past decade to maintain the integrity and safety of an in-service structure used to support hydrocarbon exploration, production, and processing activity. Current structural life assessment, as ruled by the American Petroleum Institute (API), uses a fatigue-based approach for offshore structures subjected to wave loading. As the general principle of SIM is not limited to offshore structures, this study offers an alternative life assessment method for onshore structures, especially steel frame structures subjected to earthquake loads. Reliability analysis, combined with the effect …

Experimentally Driven Numerical Model Of Carbon/Polyaniline-Based Glucose Monitoring Sensors: An Evaluation Using A New Figure Of Merit, Kyrillos Selim, Ziad Khalifa, Amira Ali, Sameh O. Abdellatif

Electrical Engineering

This study presents an experimentally driven numerical model for evaluating carbon/polyaniline (PANI)-based glucose monitoring sensors (GMSs), focusing on innovative configurations using graphene-PANI and carbon nanotube (CNT)-PANI composites. We performed a thorough analysis of the morphological, electrophysical, and electrical properties of these materials, ultimately leading to the extraction of key electrical parameters for integration into a finite element model (FEM). This model simulates the entire sensor, enabling the estimation of critical performance metrics such as sensitivity, limit of detection (LOD), linearity, and power consumption. Our findings demonstrate that the CNT-PANI configuration significantly outperforms the laser-induced graphene (LIG)-PANI electrode, achieving a figure …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Calcium zirconate and magnesium oxide have both been found to have useful dielectric properties at high temperatures. Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) were made with these dielectrics and platinum electrodes. The relationship between the lifespan (mean-time to failure) and applied voltage was determined using Weibull statistics. CaZrO3 capacitors were tested between 550◦C and600◦C while MgO capacitors were tested between 600◦C and 650◦C. The temperature coefficient Ea and the voltage coefficient n of the Prokopowicz Vaskas equation were determined under various test conditions. Activation energiesforcalciumzirconateandmagnesiumoxidewere3.25eVand3.48eV, respectively. Resistance degradation of CaZrO3 and MgO capacitors, tested at 600◦Cand250V, were compared.

Civil and Architectural Engineering Faculty Research

Engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) exhibit superior mechanical properties (MPs) and excellent crack control capabilities, making them widely used in practical engineering applications. However, the MPs of ECCs in frozen states (FSs), particularly their flexural properties (FPs), still need to be better understood. MP tests were designed for frozen ECC samples to investigate the service performance of ECCs in an FS. The samples underwent 0 to 300 freeze–thaw cycles (FTs), followed by compressive and flexural tests at a constant freezing temperature of −18 °C. The compressive properties (CPs) and FPs of the samples and their influencing mechanisms were analyzed. Based on …

Theses and Dissertations

The demand for sustainable and high-performance construction materials has led to the exploration of alternative fine aggregates and fiber reinforcements for Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC). This study investigates the feasibility of using iron ore tailings (IOT), manufactured sand (MS), and copper slag (CS) as partial replacements for river sand (RS), along with various fiber reinforcements, to enhance mechanical properties, durability, and microstructural integrity in UHPC.

The results indicate that IOT at a 30% replacement level (IOT1) exhibited the highest 56-day compressive strength, outperforming MS and CS. Copper slag was found unsuitable for UHPC due to its lower long-term strength. While both …

Airfield Pavement Management Framework Using Advanced Modeling Techniques, Heena Dhasmana, Marwa Hassan, Elise Mansour

Publications

Airport authorities constantly collect pavement condition data and utilize life-cycle cost analysis to select construction and maintenance alternatives. The current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular 150/5380-7B recommends using Pavement Condition Index (PCI) to assess airfield pavement condition for planning of Maintenance and Rehabilitation (M&R) treatments. However, structural and functional performance might not be fairly represented by solely one indicator, the PCI. The latter might mask the root cause of the pavement deterioration and lead to inadequate M&R recommendations. Furthermore, the regression nature of the existing airfield pavement assessment models is not adequate for establishing pavement performance prediction as a …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

Additive manufacturing (AM) of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites has emerged as a promising technology, enabling the fabrication of lightweight, complex geometries with reduced material waste and lower production costs. Among various AM methods, composites-based additive manufacturing (CBAM) has gained attention for its rapid prototyping and producing parts with enhanced mechanical properties. Regardless of these benefits, CBAM-printed composites may inherently possess a certain level of defects introduced during the manufacturing process, such as voids, microcracks, and non-uniform porosity. To address these challenges, understanding the relationship between microstructural characteristics and effective mechanical properties is critical. Micro-computed tomography (μCT) is a powerful technique for …

Robot Path Planning Based On Ant Colony Algorithm With Dual Heuristic Information, Xiaohui Zhou, Yanqiang Li, Yong Wang, Decai Zhao, Xiaoyao Yang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The traditional ant colony algorithm is characterized by a slow convergence speed, numerous turning points, and a tendency to fall into local minima. These characteristics make the algorithm less effective for path planning research in mobile robotics. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved ant colony algorithm and applies it to global path planning for robots. The A* algorithm is used to quickly plan a path and increase the initial pheromone of that path, so that the improved algorithm is guided by the global path during the local search, preventing excessive ants from entering dead ends, and reducing the randomness …
