Conventional wastewater treatment technologies have difficulties in feasibly removing persistent organics. The photocatalytic oxidation of these contaminants offers an economical and environmentally friendly solution. In this study, TiO2 membranes and Ag/TiO2 membranes were prepared and used for the decomposition of dissolved formic acid in wastewater. The photochemical deposition of silver on a TiO2 membrane improved the decomposition rate. The rate doubled by depositing ca. 2.5 mg of Ag per 1 g of TiO2. The influence of salinity on formic acid decomposition was studied. The presence of inorganic salts reduced the treatment performance of the TiO2 membranes to half. Ag/TiO2 membranes …

Journal of Sustainable Mining
In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted on discrete physical models that mimic mining effects to better understand the impact of continuous changes in mining environments on seismic wave velocities. The discrete physical models are represented by concrete and granite cubic samples of different sizes with holes of different diameters filled and unfilled with cemented sand backfill of different cement-sand content ratios. The hole diameters range from 0 to 150 mm in block sizes ranging from 150 mm to 450 mm in increments of 75 mm. The increasing hole size mimics increasing extraction in the mine with time. Cemented sand …

Contribution Rate Calculation Method To System-Of-Systems Based On Interval-Valued Intuitionistic Fuzzy Number Anp, Zejian Ding, Songtao Sun, Zhiwen He, Fei Liu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Contribution rate to system-of-systems (CRSoS) is mainly used to measure the contribution of an equipment to system of systems (SoS) in system construction. In order to solve some problems in the calculation of CRSoS, a multi-level equipment indicator architecture of "task-ability-indicator- equipment" is proposed. At the same time, considering the characteristics of the equipment indicator architecture, ANP (analytic network process) and IVIFN (interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy number), a IVIF-ANP calculation method is proposed to obtain more accurate CRSoS. Experiments show that this method can not only solve the problem of the calculation formula of CRSoS, but also obtain more …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In complex sea conditions with wind and waves, the relative motion between unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) requiring autonomous landing and ships is highly uncertain. In order to improve the accuracy of relative positioning and control during autonomous landing, and to ensure the safety and reliability of autonomous landing, a relative precise point positioning (RPPP) technique based on differential tropospheric error is proposed. The technology only relies on data link and carrier satellite positioning receiver to eliminate the same error of satellite positioning in the same environment and obtain accurate relative positioning. The combination of proportional navigation and linear quadratic …

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
BACKGROUND: Plasma gelsolin (pGSN) is an important part of the blood actin buffer that prevents negative consequences of possible F-actin deposition in the microcirculation and has various functions during host immune response. Recent reports reveal that severe COVID-19 correlates with reduced levels of pGSN. Therefore, using an in vitro system, we investigated whether pGSN could attenuate increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) during its exposure to the portion of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein containing the receptor binding domain (S1 subunit).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two- and three-dimensional models of the human BBB were constructed using the human cerebral microvascular endothelial …

Cerebral aneurysms are more likely to form at bifurcations in the vasculature, where disturbed fluid is prevalent due to flow separation at sufficiently high Reynolds numbers. While previous studies have demonstrated that altered shear stress exerted by disturbed flow disrupts endothelial tight junctions, less is known about how these flow regimes alter gene expression in endothelial cells lining the blood-brain barrier. Specifically, the effect of disturbed flow on expression of genes associated with cell-cell and cell-matrix interaction, which likely mediate aneurysm formation, remains unclear. RNA sequencing of immortalized cerebral endothelial cells isolated from the lumen of a 3D blood-brain barrier …

Modeling, Control, And Operation Of A Grid-Tied Solar Photovoltaic Inverter In Unbalanced Conditions, Abdulhakim Alsaif
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) integrated into powersystem grids as well as in microgrids (MGs), operational challenges and stability issues have been identified by the industry. In the last few years, solar Photovoltaic (PV) farm plants were allowed to be disconnected (isolated from the grid) during abnormal operation conditions to not only avoid stability issues but also to protect any damage to the solar PV inverter from such overcurrent or overvoltage. Most solar PV inverters operate in a conventional grid-following (GFL) control, where unbalanced operation becomes a critical issue. This control scheme regulates only positive sequence currents. …

When you consider industries that were reinvented in recent history, you will find companies that continued to morph and remain relevant and viable and those who started off valid and in favor, but alas, perhaps didn’t make the sustainable cut. Consider, for example, Blockbuster Video, they were at the forefront of providing the legal rental of movies using physical media, such as a tape or DVD. They had the opportunity to transition from physical movie rentals to online—they had a customer base and name recognition. Do you see any Blockbuster Video stores around? Chances are you do not, and this …

Various Departments of Transportation in the South-Central States and elsewhere have made extensive use of the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) surface deflection bowl data. The falling weight deflectometer (FWD) test is a popular NDT-based test used by transportation authorities to evaluate the performance of flexible pavement. Nevertheless, it is rare to develop a method for evaluating pavement sections using FWD data from all sensors. There is a constant demand for DOTs and highway agencies to have a streamlined approach that can be applied directly to their databases. This research focuses on extending and verifying the concept of previously published area ratio …
