Practical Fss-Based Sensor Sensitivity, Mahboobeh Mahmoodi, Kristen M. Donnell
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Frequency selective surfaces are a periodic array of unit cells that, when illuminated externally, have a specific frequency response that depends on element geometry, spacing, and substrate properties. Theoretically, FSS is assumed as an infinite array of unit cells with a plane wave excitation. However, in practice, an FSS is finite and hence, due to edge effects, the limited number of unit cells, and non-uniform illumination, the response will deviate from the theoretical. As it relates to FSS-based sensing in particular, a localized illumination is often used in order to improve the sensing resolution. However, due to the aforementioned factors, …

Conformal coatings are often applied to printed circuit boards to protect the board and its components from environmental factors like moisture, chemicals, and vibration. The impact of a conformal coating on crosstalk and radiated emissions was studied in the following paper. Two coating materials were characterized in terms of their permittivity and permeability. The impact of the conformal coating was evaluated based on the crosstalk between microstrip traces, the radiated emissions from a switch-mode power supply (SMPS), and on coupling from an EMI filter to nearby components. The coatings increased crosstalk between microstrip traces by up to 5 ~ 6 …

In this paper, modeling of RFI problem caused by a solid-state drive (SSD) in a laptop is proposed. Two noise sources (one outside and one inside a cavity) in the SSD are reconstructed as dipole moments with magnitude-only near-field scanning data. The dipole moment inside a cavity is then replaced by a Huygens' box covering four side surfaces of the cavity using a numerical simulation. The noise voltage at an RF antenna port is calculated by combining the two reconstructed noise sources with measured transfer functions. The model is successfully validated through a comparison of the calculation with measurement results.

Signal integrity (SI) can be interpreted as a measure of the distortion of the incident pulse, which is attributed to various contributors, e.g., inter-symbol interference (ISI), crosstalk, jitter, etc. The channel insertion loss is generally the most critical concern in SI designs, since it determines the working bandwidth of a high-speed channel, and the bandlimited channels are known as the root cause of ISI. At the tens of Gigabit rates in use today, PCB transmission lines may have appreciable losses, which can be divided into frequency-dependent dielectric loss and conductor loss, and noticeable amount of losses can be generated at …

Due to the fast-switching nature of modern power converters, up to hundreds of MHz of common-mode noise can easily be generated. The characterization of switching components, e.g., Si MOSFETs, is essential for noise reduction. However, limited by the bandwidth of instruments, the voltage-dependent capacitances of high voltage MOSFETs are typically characterized at approximately 1 MHz, which is insufficient for EMI applications. In this paper, the measurement method and the test fixtures are presented. The measurement bandwidth is pushed to 30 MHz and higher, and frequency-dependent capacitances of a MOSFET are observed through measurements.

Generation Expansion Planning Considering Discrete Storage Model And Renewable Energy Uncertainty: A Bi-Interval Optimization Approach, Siyuan Wang, Guangchao Geng, Qy Jiang, Rui Bo
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Both discrete storage model (DSM) and continuous storage model (CSM) have been used in the power system planning literature. In this work, we conduct a sizing-error analysis for the use of CSM in generation expansion planning (GEP), which shows more reasonable storage sizing decisions are offered by the DSM in comparison to the CSM. However, when the DSM is considered in the context of interval optimization, the discrete status variables in mutually exclusive constraints and the strong temporal coupling in state-of-charge (SOC) constraints create significant challenges. To tackle this, a tailored interval optimization approach is proposed to consider both DSM …

In this paper, an event-based neuro-adaptive robust tracking controller for a perturbed and networked differential drive mobile robot (DMR) is designed with concurrent learning. A radial basis function neural network, which approximates an unknown perturbation, is used to design an adaptive sliding mode controller (SMC). The RBFNN weights and SMC parameters are estimated online using an adaptive tuning law to ensure performance with reduced chattering. To improve the convergence of RBFNN weight estimation error, a concurrent learning-based adaptive law is derived, which uses measured online and recorded data. Further, a suitable triggering condition is designed to achieve a reduced number …

An Interleaved High Step-Up Dc-Dc Converter With Built-In Transformer-Based Voltage Multiplier For Dc Microgrid Applications, Ramin Rahimi, Saeed Habibi, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Pourya Shamsi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes a high step-up DC-DC converter with a built-in transformer (BIT)-based voltage multiplier (VM) that is suitable for integrating low-voltage renewable energy sources into a DC microgrid. A three-winding BIT is combined with the switched-capacitor (SC) cells to extend the voltage gain and reduce the voltage stress on the switches. The current-falling rates of the diodes are controlled by the leakage inductances of the BIT, alleviating the reverse-recovery problem of the diodes. The operating modes and steady-state analysis are presented. Additionally, the validity of the proposed converter is confirmed by the simulation and experimental results of a 400 …

Assessment Of Aged Woodchip Bioreactor Physical And Hydraulic Properties, Shelby Duncan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Denitrifying woodchip bioreactors are a critical tool for mitigating nitrate loading to downstream water bodies. The properties of the woodchip are a key factor in the design of the bioreactor which are usually designed to optimize that retention time of the water being treated. Retention time is affected by active flow volume, porosity, and flow rate. As a bioreactor ages, the carbon material will break down and, in some cases, sedimentation will occur within the bioreactor. Both processes will affect the porosity and hydraulic performance of the bioreactor. When flow through the bioreactor is significantly different than the original design, …

Use Of Image Processing Techniques And Machine Learning For Better Understanding Of T Gondii Biology, Amer Asiri
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
Almost one in every three people worldwide is infected with Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii). The biology and growth of the parasite’s bradyzoite form in host tissue cysts are not well understood. T. gondii’s metabolic state influences the morphology of its single mitochondrion, which can be visualized using fluorescence microscopy with specific dyes. Hence, fluorescence microscopy images of cysts purified from infected mouse brains carry biological information about bradyzoites, the poorly understood form of the parasite within them. With the help of fluorescence microscopy techniques, previous studies extracted images of the mitochondrion, nucleus, and the inner membrane complex (IMC) …
Development Of A Decision-Making Tool For Prediction Of Rainfall-Induced Landslides, Faisal Shakib Ahmed
Development Of A Decision-Making Tool For Prediction Of Rainfall-Induced Landslides, Faisal Shakib Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Landslides are frequently observed in mountainous places following prolonged periods of rain, frequently resulting in substantial topography changes. They pose a significant risk to human lives and the built environment globally, particularly in areas prone to excessive rainfall. While slope failures can occur because of human-caused factors such as slope loading or toe cutting for construction purposes, many failures occur because of rainfall penetrating an otherwise stable slope. A greater understanding of the characteristics and mechanics of landslides is consequently critical for geotechnical research, particularly in evaluating prospective mitigation strategies. The potential of slope failure is a primary consideration when …

Load And Pressure Distribution As A Function Of Dynamic Contact Stress At The Railroad Crosstie-Ballast Interface, Habib Abdil Unluoglu
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Excessive crosstie wear and abrasion and ballast wear and fouling are two of the fundamental problems contributing to inadequate railroad track performance. This adversely affects the attainment and long-term maintenance of desired track geometric requirements. The magnitudes and distribution of the stresses at the crosstie-ballast (CT-B) interface must be known to determine the stress distribution on the ballast. However, the stresses at the top of the ballast often vary significantly. This study examines a new approach to predicting dynamic contact pressures at the interface of crosstie and ballast using the ‘square wave theory.’ A data set of in-track CT-B interfacial …

Optimizing The Potential Of Highway Safety Investment, Riana Tanzen
Optimizing The Potential Of Highway Safety Investment, Riana Tanzen
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Highway safety management aims to prevent crashes and reduce the resulting frequency and severity within the limit of available resources. The identification of potentially hazardous sites and investment on safety treatments have been fundamental to fulfill this goal. However, having many highway safety improvement projects in hand, safety professionals need to evaluate several different alternatives and allocate the limited funds to the ones that would provide the highest return on investment. Hence, prioritizing the safety projects based on their potential to achieve the greatest safety benefit is crucial. Ineffective prioritization can distribute funds to locations with less potential for improvement …
