Two-Dimensional In-Plane Strain Fss-Based Sensor, Mahboobeh Mahmoodi, Kristen M. Donnell Jan 2022

Two-Dimensional In-Plane Strain Fss-Based Sensor, Mahboobeh Mahmoodi, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Frequency selective surface (FSS) based sensors have found application as sensors in the last decade. In this paper, a new sensor design is proposed for two-dimensional in-plane strain sensing. The unit cell of the FSS-based sensor includes two slot dipoles, oriented normal to one another and each with different dimensions, to create two unique resonant frequencies when interrogated with an incident electric field normal to the direction of measured strain. In this way, 2D strain can be characterized concurrently and independently. The error due to strain orthogonal to the direction of interest, along with the error due to the presence …

A Meander Line-Based Frequency Selective Surface For Strain Sensing, Swathi Muthyala Ramesh, Kristen M. Donnell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) are periodic arrays of conductive elements that have distinct reflection and transmission responses. In this work, an FSS sensor designed to operate in Ka-band to measure a wide range of uni-directional strain using a meander line-based unit cell is presented. Specifically, the proposed unit cell of the sensor consists of a convoluted meander line geometry designed on a thin dielectric substrate. Strain sensing is achieved by monitoring the change in the resonant frequency of the FSS when under strain that is parallel to an interrogating signal linearly polarized and aligned with the convoluted dimension of the …

De-Embedding For Coupled Three-Port Devices, Yuandong Guo, Bo Pu, Donghyun Kim, Jun Fan Jan 2022

De-Embedding For Coupled Three-Port Devices, Yuandong Guo, Bo Pu, Donghyun Kim, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In many applications, the device under test (DUT) is embedded into a test setup. Various de-embedding techniques have been proposed to expose the real electrical behaviors of a DUT, e.g., the traditional thru-reflect-line and short-open-load-thru algorithms, where the T-matrix and its inverse form are adopted in the mathematical process. In the fields of radiofrequency and electromagnetic compatibility, a DUT may have three coupled ports, and the symmetry in the associated S-matrix breaks down, because the numbers of entry and exist ports are not equal, which results in a non-square T-matrix based upon the definitions. Given that the inverse expression of …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Price forecasting is at the center of decision making in electricity markets. Much research has been done in forecasting energy prices for a single market while little research has been reported on forecasting price difference between markets, which presents higher volatility and yet plays a critical role in applications such as virtual trading. To this end, this paper takes the first attempt at it and employs novel deep learning architecture with Bidirectional Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) units and Sequence-to-Sequence (Seq2Seq) architecture to forecast nodal price difference between day-ahead and real-time markets. In addition to value prediction, these deep learning architectures …

Experimental Investigation Of Asphaltene Deposition And Its Impact On Oil Recovery In Eagle Ford Shale During Miscible And Immiscible Co2huff-N-Puff Gas Injection, Mukhtar Elturki, Abdulmohsin Imqam

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the challenges in extracting oil from unconventional resources using hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques is the low primary recovery rate, which is caused by the ultra-small permeability of these resources. Consequently, it is essential to investigate gas injection methods to produce the trapped oil in shale formations. However, the injection process can cause asphaltene depositions inside the reservoir, leading to plugging of pores and oil recovery (OR) reduction. There has been limited research on using gas injection techniques to improve oil production in tight/unconventional resources, although carbon dioxide (CO2) and gas-enhanced oil recovery methods have been used …

Volumetric Microfabrication With Structured Light, He Cheng Jan 2022

Volumetric Microfabrication With Structured Light, He Cheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Multiphoton polymerization (MPP) as one of the direct laser writing techniques is capable of manufacturing three-dimensional (3D) micro-structures with complex shapes and novel functionalities. However, current MPP methods rely on point-by-point or layer-by-layer scanning and therefore are time-consuming. The low fabrication throughput of conventional MPP is the key factor that limits its wider adoption for industrial manufacturing over large surface area. One way to increase the fabrication speed is to turn layer-by-layer process into a volumetric process. An ideal volumetric printing method can fabricate structures with complex 3D geometry by single exposure and should be easy to implement. As a …

Fabrication Of Copper Nanoparticle/Graphene Oxide Composites And Reduction Of Copper Oxide Nanowires, Maged Elshatoury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The thesis reports the investigation of producing copper nanoparticle composites with graphene oxides (GO) using poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and copper nanowires through the reduction of copper oxide nanowires using hydrazine. It was discovered that PSS improved the dispersity of GO and increased the absorption of copper ions on GO. An electrochemical reduction of GO/PSS/copper ion dispersion produced copper nanoparticles on GO surfaces. Reducing copper oxide nanowires on copper foils using hydrazine was achieved at a temperature where copper nanowires maintained their nanoscale structures.

Light Guiding And Concentrating Using Self-Collimating Spatially-Variant Photonic Crystals, Chun Xia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Advances in integrated photonic devices require low loss, easy-to-integrate solutions for chip-to-chip and chip-to-fiber interfacing. Among the most common solutions are traditional lenses. However, circular lenses require additional mounting mechanisms to ensure proper alignment. Additionally, the beam routing functionality cannot be added to the traditional lenses unless they are combined with mirrors and operate in the reflection mode. In this dissertation, we investigate lens-embedded photonic crystals (LEPCs) as a solution to flat and multifunctional lenses. The concept is demonstrated by creating self-collimating lattices containing a gradient refractive index lens (GRIN-LEPC), a binary-shaped lens (B-LEPC), and a Fresnel-type binary-shaped lens (F-B-LEPC). …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Microcystins (MCs) are toxins produced by cyanobacteria commonly found in harmful algal blooms (HAB) occurring in many surface waters. Due to their toxicity to humans and other organisms, the World Health Organization (WHO) set a guideline of 1 µg/L for microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR) in drinking water. However, current analytical techniques for the detection of MC-LR such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are costly, bulky, time-consuming, and mostly conducted in a laboratory, requiring highly trained personnel. Therefore, an analytical method that can be used in the field for rapid determination is essential. In this study, an Anti-MC-LR/MC-LR/Cysteamine …

Influence Of Nonlinear Multiaxial Matrix Viscoelasticity On Piezoresistivity Of Carbon Nanotube Polymer Composites, Wolfgang Klimm Jan 2022

Influence Of Nonlinear Multiaxial Matrix Viscoelasticity On Piezoresistivity Of Carbon Nanotube Polymer Composites, Wolfgang Klimm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Nanocomposites are prominent candidates to extend the capabilities in areas of established fiber reinforced composites. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) with their outstanding mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties are of particular interest. Especially polymers profit from the addition of CNTs, and can be rendered significantly stiffer, stronger, and even electrically conductive. The resulting electrical conductance is deformation-sensitive, known as piezoresistivity, and is utilized in strain sensing applications. However, the polymer matrix introduces time- and temperature-dependency into the mechanical behavior, known as viscoelasticity, and thus affects the relationship between deformation and electrical conductivity over time. Although piezoresistivity and polymer viscoelasticity have been studied …
