Design And Development Of Magnetic Iron Core Gold Nanoparticle-Based Fluorescent Multiplex Assay To Detect Salmonella, Xinyi Zhao
Articles
Salmonella is a bacterial pathogen which is one of the leading causes of severe illnesses in humans. The current study involved the design and development of two methods, respectively using iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP) and iron core gold nanoparticle (ICGNP), conjugated with the Salmonella antibody and the fluorophore, 4-Methylumbelliferyl Caprylate (4-MUCAP), used as an indicator, for its selective and sensitive detection in contaminated food products. Twenty double-blind beverage samples, spiked with Salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, were prepared in sterile Eppendorf® tubes at room temperature. The gold layer and spikes of ICGNPs increased the surface areas. The ratio …

Cold plasma (CP) is an effective strategy to alter the limitations of biopolymer materials for food packaging applications. Biopolymers such as polysaccharides and proteins are known to be sustainable materials with excellent film-forming properties. Bio-based films can be used as an alternative to traditional plastic packaging. There are limitations to biopolymer packaging materials such as hydrophobicity, poor barrier, and thermos-mechanical properties. For this reason, biopolymers must be modified to create a packaging material with the desired applicability. CP is an effective method to enhance the functionality and interfacial features of biopolymers. It etches the film surface allowing for better adhesion …

T In many machine learning classification problems, datasets are usually of high dimensionality and therefore require efficient and effective methods for identifying the relative importance of their attributes, eliminating the redundant and irrelevant ones. Due to the huge size of the search space of the possible solutions, the attribute subset evaluation feature selection methods are not very suitable, so in these scenarios feature ranking methods are used. Most of the feature ranking methods described in the literature are univariate methods, which do not detect interactions between factors. In this paper, we propose two new multivariate feature ranking methods based on …

Exploiting The Sars-Cov-2 Spike Protein Components To Guide Molecular Level Entry Of A Bag-1 Inhibitor In The Treatment Of Breast And Lung Cancers, Malak Yasin, Michael Peters, Mo Jiang
Summer REU Program
Chemoresistance of lung cancer cells is the primary reason as to why limitations occur with cancer treatments. A protein, known as BAG-1 is responsible for many cellular activities including cellular stress response, cell growth, and apoptosis (regulated cell death). When overexpressed, the protein has been linked to the anti-apoptotic behavior of cancer cells. BAG-1 can combine to heat shock proteins (HSPs), a family of helical molecular chaperones that are known to aid in the maturation of proteins, refolding, and degradation. This response plays a crucial role in the study of chemoresistance in cancer patients due to its detrimental nature. Prior, …

Enhanced Study Of Complex Systems By Unveiling Hidden Symmetries With Dynamical Visibility, Nhat Vu Minh Nguyen
Enhanced Study Of Complex Systems By Unveiling Hidden Symmetries With Dynamical Visibility, Nhat Vu Minh Nguyen
2022 Symposium
One of the great challenges in complex and chaotic dynamics is to reveal its deterministic structures. These temporal dynamical structures are sometimes a consequence of hidden symmetries. Detecting and understanding them can allow the study of complex systems even without knowing the full underlying mathematical description of the system. Here we introduce a new technique, called Dynamical Visibility, that quantifies temporal correlations of the dynamics based upon some symmetry conditions. This visibility measures the departure of the dynamics from internal symmetries. We apply this technique to well-known chaotic systems, such as the logistic map and the circle map, as well …

The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a critical, yet mechanistically elusive role in tumor development and progression, as well as drug resistance. To better understand the pathophysiology of the complex TME, a reductionist approach has been employed to create in vitro microfluidic models called “tumor chips”. Herein, we review the fabrication processes, applications, and limitations of the tumor chips currently under development for use in cancer research. Tumor chips afford capabilities for real-time observation, precise control of microenvironment factors (e.g. stromal and cellular components), and application of physiologically relevant fluid shear stresses and perturbations. Applications for tumor chips include drug screening …

In the present work, a plugin has been developed for use with the DoD HPCMP CREATE-AV Kestrel multi-physics solver that adds volumetric source terms to the energy equation. These source terms model the heat released due to combustion, but are much more computationally efficient than a full chemistry model. A thrust-based optimization study was then carried out under the control of Sandia National Laboratories' Dakota toolkit. Dakota was allowed to control the amount of heat added to three regions of the scramjet combustor. The plugin was then extended to consider ignition delay time. By comparing ignition delay time to dwell …

Since Hodgkin and Huxley’s discoveries in the 1950s, mathematical modeling became an indispensable tool in neuroscience. The evolution of computer systems paved the way for computational models to improve our understanding of the nervous system. The long-term goals of this research are to develop tools for examining, understanding, and analyzing experimental data from spinal motoneurons (MNs), which are implicated in many motor disorders. Specifically, I developed high-fidelity, anatomically-detailed computational models that could be used to 1) study the cellular mechanisms underlying the non-linear MNs firing behaviors, 2) analyze the multifactorial process of MNs excitability regulation, and how it is affected …

This paper presents the opportunity gap for comics in engineering education, through reflections from a team redesigning a mechanical engineering syllabi using illustrations. To increase a sense of belonging among diverse students, the authors of this paper propose a graphic narrative focused on the curriculum of the mechanical engineering department at a large public university in Western United States. We hope that this paper addresses the underutilized and largely missed opportunity to add engagement, better conceptual understanding, and improve inclusion in engineering classrooms through incorporating visual illustrations.

Improving Dysarthric Speech Recognition By Enriching Training Datasets, Sophie Cullen
Improving Dysarthric Speech Recognition By Enriching Training Datasets, Sophie Cullen
Dissertations
Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder that results from disruptions in the neuro-motor interface and is characterised by poor articulation of phonemes and hyper-nasality and is characteristically different from normal speech. Many modern automatic speech recognition systems focus on a narrow range of speech diversity therefore as a consequence of this they exclude a groups of speakers who deviate in aspects of gender, race, age and speech impairment when building training datasets. This study attempts to develop an automatic speech recognition system that deals with dysarthric speech with limited dysarthric speech data. Speech utterances collected from the TORGO database are …

This study proposes dynamic modeling of lubricated rolling contact and a numerical sub-model for fatigue life prediction of rollers under starved lubrication conditions. Excitation caused by surface defects in rolling disks is numerically calculated and used as a metric in predicting surface pitting failure occurrence. Surface topography of mating surfaces is used as input to the model for determining maximum acceleration, approach velocity, and approach distance of rollers in presence of pits (defects). Resultant bearing force, contacting force versus approach distance are generated and compared for different pit sizes, developing an accurate tool for design purposes. Maximum acceleration and displacement …

Gadolinium, and possibly praseodymium, are relatively enriched in the magnetic 24 fractions of Class F fly ashes from Central Appalachian coal sources. Although the enrichment is 25 evident in the inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) 26 determinations of the rare earth content, transmission electron microscopy–energy dispersive x-27 ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDS) examination of the fly ash fails to show the sites of the Gd or Pr. 28 This apparent lack of correlation could be due to the inability of the EDS to detect low 29 concentrations of the rare earth elements definitively; interferences in the analytics, leading to 30 false …

Performance Of Xor Rule For Decentralized Detection Of Deterministic Signals In Bivariate Gaussian Noise, Xingjian Sun, Shailee Yagnik, Ramanarayanan Viswanathan, Lei Cao
Faculty and Student Publications
In this paper, we consider the performance of exclusive-OR (XOR) rule in detecting the presence or absence of a deterministic signal in bivariate Gaussian noise. Signals, when present at the two sensors, are assumed unequal, whereas the noise components have identical marginal distribution but are correlated. The sensors send their one-bit quantized data to a fusion center, which then employs the XOR rule to arrive at the final decision. Here we prove that, in the limit as the correlation coefficient r approaches 1, the optimum fusion rule for both parallel and tandem topologies is XOR with identical, alternating partitions (XORAP) …
