Mineral Composition Characteristics And Petroleum Geological Significance Of Tight Sandstone Of Longtan Formation In Weixin Area, Eastern Yunnan, Xing Huitong, Zhang Xiaoli, He Jinxian, Cao Wenjie, Yang Tiantian, Wang Jian, Shi Shuai

Coal Geology & Exploration

Tight gas is an unconventional resource developed in low-porosity and ultra-low permeability sandstone and has rich potential oil and gas reserves. However, due to its tight and low permeability, fracturing is a necessary means for efficient development of tight gas. The reservoir characteristics and material composition of sandstone are of great significance to the preliminary evaluation of resource potential and production capacity of the dense sandstone reservoirs. By using X-ray diffraction, microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and other technical means, ten outcroppings of tight sandstone from coal measures of Permian Longtan Formation in Weixin area of eastern Yunnan Province were qualitatively …

Characteristics Of Coal And Gas Outburst And Controlling Mechanism Of Stress Field In The Hanging Wall Of Normal Faults, Cao Yunxing, Zhang Haiyang, Zhang Zhen, Liu Gaofeng

Coal Geology & Exploration

The fault zone is the main geological unit where coal and gas outbursts occur. Statistics of many coal and gas outbursts show that the number and intensity of the outbursts in the hanging wall are significantly greater than those in the foot wall for normal faults. However, there are few studies on the geological mechanism of this phenomenon, especially the variation of the in-situ stress field in the hanging wall of normal faults before and after mining, and its controlling mechanism of coal and gas outbursts that has not been completely demonstrated. In view of this, the normal fault DF …

Directional Drilling Technology And Equipment For Gas Drainage In Large Panel Of Underground Coal Mines, Xu Chao, Jiang Lei, Chen Pan, Zhang Di

Coal Geology & Exploration

In recent years, with the progress of directional drilling technology and equipment in underground coal mines, a new model of advanced and comprehensive control of gas in the large panel of Baode Coal Mine is formed by covering the whole work with ultra-long directional drilling along the coal seam, hence the panel of the unexcavated roadway can be fully pre-pumped in advance to avoid gas overrun. As gas extraction in large panel requires a single construction along the coal seam borehole to run through the whole working face length, this paper starts from the construction technology of ultra-long directional drilling …

Mechanobiology In The Comorbidities Of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Shaina P. Royer, Sangyoon J. Han Apr 2022

Mechanobiology In The Comorbidities Of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Shaina P. Royer, Sangyoon J. Han

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDSs) are a group of connective tissue disorders, characterized by skin stretchability, joint hypermobility and instability. Mechanically, various tissues from EDS patients exhibit lowered elastic modulus and lowered ultimate strength. This change in mechanics has been associated with EDS symptoms. However, recent evidence points toward a possibility that the comorbidities of EDS could be also associated with reduced tissue stiffness. In this review, we focus on mast cell activation syndrome and impaired wound healing, comorbidities associated with the classical type (cEDS) and the hypermobile type (hEDS), respectively, and discuss potential mechanobiological pathways involved in the comorbidities.

Estimation Of Methane Emissions From Beef Cattle Manure In Nebraska, Noe Hernandez Apr 2022

Estimation Of Methane Emissions From Beef Cattle Manure In Nebraska, Noe Hernandez

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The emission of methane from livestock production contributes to climate change. Cattle manure accounts for one-third of the total methane emission over the lifecycle of beef and dairy production and represents an opportunity to lower the environmental footprint of the beef industry. While models have been developed to estimate methane emissions from manure under certain types of manure storage methods, there is a lack of a user-friendly interface that agricultural or environmental engineers can use to estimate the methane emission from manure for specific regions. Therefore, the goal of this study was to build an interface to estimate methane emissions …

A Low-Cost, Arduino-Based Platform For Emulating Energy Harvesting In Wireless Sensor Networks, Braden A. Miller

ONU Student Research Colloquium

This paper presents an Arduino-based platform for emulating energy harvesting in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) as a form of hardware-in-the-loop simulation. The platform makes use of a battery monitoring circuit and code implemented on the Arduino as an alternative to using significantly more expensive fully equipped energy harvesting nodes. Using embedded code to emulate the energy harvesting process allows for various energy harvesting models and processes to be tested using the same platform. The main contributions of this paper are the experimental data and analyses demonstrating the energy use characterization of the Arduino-based platform in a three-node relay network using …

Computational Analysis Of The Effects Of Scarfed Nozzle Variations On Jet Plumes, Andrew J. La Sorsa Apr 2022

Computational Analysis Of The Effects Of Scarfed Nozzle Variations On Jet Plumes, Andrew J. La Sorsa

ONU Student Research Colloquium

A computational fluid dynamics analysis investigating the variation of effects on nozzles with non-orthogonal exit planes, known as scarfing, was performed. The steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model, coupled with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model, was used to simulate and compare plume development and characteristics using various scarfing geometries at variable inlet conditions. The jet plume cross-section is significantly affected for overexpanded conditions, while retaining the nozzle exit shape for underexpanded conditions, although slight peaks (bifurcation) do occur at the centerline. The same observations occur when slightly changing the angle of scarf. However, inverting the overall geometry of the diverging portion of the …

Effects Of Vortex Generator Placement On A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blade, Dagan Sorensen Apr 2022

Effects Of Vortex Generator Placement On A Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blade, Dagan Sorensen

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Vortex generators are commonly used devices to control the flow over an airfoil or other surface. In this paper the effect of differing placements of vortex generators on a wind turbine airfoil, compared to an airfoil without vortex generators, were simulated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). It was shown that, in some instances, the application of vortex generators effectively controlled the flow over the airfoil to increase the power produced by the wind turbine. According to the CFD results, the application of vortex generators at an angle increased the lift produced, as well as delaying the separation of the boundary layer.

Combat Robot, Wayne Lambert, Elijah Harris, Brian Eiseman, Jordan Meyer

ONU Student Research Colloquium

The senior capstone project that was tasked to the team was the decision of choosing a challenge within a national robotics competition. The group decided to compete at the National Robotics Challenge in Marion, Ohio. The idea was to participate in the combat robot competition at this NRC event. Once this decision had been made the next steps were to get an idea of what the rules and requirements of the competition were and to try and to sketch a very rough drawing of what the ideal robot should look like. From there it was decided to start a timeline …

Evaluating The Use Of Nintendo Labo As A Rehabilitation Tool, Jacob Colwell, Logan Suiter, Amanda Wells

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Serious gaming is the practice of using video games, either commercial or specifically designed, for physical rehabilitation. Serious games have emerged in the last decade as a way to increase patient involvement in rehabilitation, increase the likelihood of patients continuing treatment after progress stalls, and generally increase mental health during treatment. However, the current literature has not kept pace with the evolution of technology and therefore the use of next-generation consoles for serious gaming is underdeveloped.

The Nintendo Switch could provide new avenues for serious gaming because of the advanced sensing ability of its controllers (Joy-Cons) and the engaging ways …

Efficient Low Dimensional Representation Of Vector Gaussian Distributions, Md Mahmudul Hasan Apr 2022

Efficient Low Dimensional Representation Of Vector Gaussian Distributions, Md Mahmudul Hasan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to find optimal graphical tree model for low dimensional representation of vector Gaussian distributions. For a special case we assumed that the population co-variance matrix $\Sigma_x$ has an additional latent graphical constraint, namely, a latent star topology. We have found the Constrained Minimum Determinant Factor Analysis (CMDFA) and Constrained Minimum Trace Factor Analysis (CMTFA) decompositions of this special $\Sigma_x$ in connection with the operational meanings of the respective solutions. Characterizing the CMDFA solution of special $\Sigma_x$, according to the second interpretation of Wyner's common information, is equivalent to solving the source coding problem of finding the minimum …

Exploring Halide Perovskite Structural Tunability To Design Materials For Dynamic Photovoltaic Windows, Josephine L. Surel, Elizabeth V. Cutlip, James R. Mandeville Apr 2022

Exploring Halide Perovskite Structural Tunability To Design Materials For Dynamic Photovoltaic Windows, Josephine L. Surel, Elizabeth V. Cutlip, James R. Mandeville

21st Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2022)

Halide perovskites offer exciting potential as photovoltaic materials and simply as semiconductors. Specifically, their structural tunability has become of greater interest as researchers begin to search for novel ways to tune the materials to achieve improved solar cell stability or to target new applications. One potential technology which halide perovskites could enable is dynamically switchable photovoltaic windows: windows which can transition between photovoltaically active (dark) and non-photovoltaic (transparent). We build toward this goal in this work by investigating the intercalation and deintercalation of methylamine gas into 2-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) phase halide perovskites of the type A2PbI4. As has been shown …

Exploration Of The Use Of A Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller For Mitigation Of Seismic Base Excitation In Civil Structures, Mary C. Ngoma Apr 2022

Exploration Of The Use Of A Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller For Mitigation Of Seismic Base Excitation In Civil Structures, Mary C. Ngoma

21st Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2022)

Civil infrastructures are susceptible to damage due to external forces such as winds and earthquakes. These external forces cause damage to buildings and different civil structures. To prevent this, active control systems are executed. These systems use sensors to measure the displacement of the infrastructure, then actuators are utilized to provide a force that counteracts that displacement. In this study, a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller was used to minimize the impact of an earthquake disturbance on multi-story structures. The proportional, integral, and derivative gains of the controller were obtained using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). This PID controller was validated …

Computational Comparison Of Dual Bell, Expansion-Deflection, And Aerospike Nozzles, Manuel R. Abadie Ardon Apr 2022

Computational Comparison Of Dual Bell, Expansion-Deflection, And Aerospike Nozzles, Manuel R. Abadie Ardon

Honors College Theses

In the search for a Single-Stage-to-Orbit rocket, Altitude Compensating Nozzles concepts (ACNs) have been proposed since the 1950s, but research has stalled despite the modern analysis tools available. These nozzle concepts offer optimum performance at two or more altitude settings. This research chose three of these concepts, these being the Dual Bell, Expansion-Deflection, and Aerospike, which were designed and analyzed at various pressure ratios (NPR=10,15,30,36,30,45) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT. Simulations generated pressure distributions along the nozzle wall, which allowed to calculate data values such as thrust coefficients. Nozzle efficiency is calculated from this data and used to …

Sub- And Near-Critical Hydrothermal Carbonization Of Animal Manures, Kyoung S. Ro, Michael A. Jackson, Ariel A. Szogi, David L. Compton, Bryan R. Moser, Nicole D. Berge

Faculty Publications

To produce hydrochar with less volatile matter (VM) and more fixed carbon (FC) to increase its stability, this study compared the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of hen (HM) and swine (SM) manures at typical HTC sub-critical temperature of 210 °C and slightly super-critical temperature of 400 °C. Physico-chemical properties such as proximate analysis; ultimate analysis; Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area; higher heating value (HHV); chemical oxygen demand (COD); and inorganic nutrients of hydrochar, gaseous, and liquid products were determined. As expected, both VM and yield decreased with temperature. The heats of HTC reactions were estimated to be exothermic, ranging from −5.7 to …

Simplified Synthesis Of Conjugated Polymers Enabled Via 1,4-Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-B]Pyrrole, Kenneth-John Jack Bell Apr 2022

Simplified Synthesis Of Conjugated Polymers Enabled Via 1,4-Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-B]Pyrrole, Kenneth-John Jack Bell

Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses

Conjugated polymers have attracted significant attention as the active layer material in organic electronics, such as organic photovoltaics and light-emitting diodes, partly due to the ability to influence a broad range of properties through structural design motifs. However, high performance conjugated polymers suffer from numerous synthetic steps, generation of toxic waste, and harsh reaction conditions all of which impart additional costs that inhibit their widespread utilization. Therefore, an emphasis on reducing synthetic complexity and utilizing abundant, commercially available starting materials is needed for organic electronics to reach their full potential. Dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole (H2DPP) chromophores offer a simple one-pot synthesis …

Publications

Musculoskeletal computational models provide a non-invasive approach to investigate human movement biomechanics. These models could be particularly useful for pediatric applications where in vivo and in vitro biomechanical parameters are difficult or impossible to examine using physical experiments alone. The objective was to develop a novel musculoskeletal subject-specific infant model to investigate hip joint biomechanics during cyclic leg movements. Experimental motion-capture marker data of a supine-lying 2-month-old infant were placed on a generic GAIT 2392 OpenSim model. After scaling the model using body segment anthropometric measurements and joint center locations, inverse kinematics and dynamics were used to estimate hip ranges …

Economic Feasibility Analysis Of Variable-Speed Pumps By Simulating 15 Multiple Water Distribution Systems, Conrad B. Truettner, Brian D. Barkdoll

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The UN Sustainability Goals address measures to reduce environmental pollution. Water distribution systems (WDSs) use electric energy, which pollutes the atmosphere through, at least partly, the burning of coal. This study simulates, through modeling, variable-speed pumps (VSPs) on 15 different real WDSs on the network solver EPANET and analyzes the payback period. An algorithm is introduced here to select the optimal pump speed pattern to save the most energy while satisfying the constrain of sufficient pressure at all times and all locations. It was found that five of the 15 systems operated unsuccessfully using a VSP, due to the VSP …

Introducing Normal Forms To Students: A Comparison Of Theory-First Vs. Project-First Educational Approaches, Dakota C. Cookenmaster, Jacob A. Bahn Apr 2022

Introducing Normal Forms To Students: A Comparison Of Theory-First Vs. Project-First Educational Approaches, Dakota C. Cookenmaster, Jacob A. Bahn

Campus Research Month

One of the primary challenges instructors face when educating scientists and engineers is the introduction of important theory, both to show its essential nature in research as well as its practicality. This paper analyzes two pedagogical methods for the instruction of database normal forms. The first of these methods is a theory-based approach that relies on written works and practices to introduce the concept. The second of these focuses on a project-based approach which aligns with normal form standards as students implement a database schema. This paper compares these in a small study and advises an appropriate method for educators.

Robust Multi-Period Maximum Coverage Drone Facility Location Problem Considering Coverage Reliability, Darshan Rajesh Chauhan, Avinash Unnikrishnan, Miguel A. Figliozzi, Stephen D. Boyles

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study proposes a multi-period facility location formulation to maximize coverage while meeting a coverage reliability constraint. The coverage reliability constraint is a chance constraint limiting the probability of failure to maintain the desired service standard, commonly followed by emergency medical services and fire departments. Further, uncertainties in the failure probabilities are incorporated by utilizing robust optimization using polyhedral uncertainty sets, which results in a compact mixed-integer linear program. A case study in the Portland, OR metropolitan area is analyzed for employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones to deliver defibrillators in the region to combat out-of-hospital cardiac arrests.
