Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Of Vibro-Impact Triboelectric Energy Harvesters, Mostafa Hassan
Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Of Vibro-Impact Triboelectric Energy Harvesters, Mostafa Hassan
Mechanical Engineering Theses
Improving the efficiency of energy harvesting, by investigating different techniques to increase the harvester bandwidth, as well as by exploring the influencing factors and adjusting them to optimal setups. Towards this, multiple Vibro-impact energy harvesters were proposed in this study. First, a Two-Degree of Freedom (2DOF) Vibro-impact Triboelectric Energy Harvester with a single and a double impact configuration is proposed. Multi-modality and piecewise linearity were combined to improve the harvesting bandwidth of triboelectric energy harvesters utilizing two resonant frequencies. The harvester structure consists of a primary cantilever beam attached to a secondary cantilever beam through a tip mass in the …

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
The clinical translation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is limited by population heterogeneity and inconsistent responses to engineered signals. Specifically, the extent in which MSCs respond to mechanical cues varies significantly across MSC lines. Although induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have recently emerged as a novel cell source for creating highly homogeneous MSC (iMSC) lines, cellular mechanosensing of iMSCs on engineered materials with defined mechanics is not well understood. Here, we tested the mechanosensing properties of three human iMSC lines derived from iPSCs generated using a fully automated platform. Stiffness-driven changes in morphology were comparable between MSCs and iMSCs cultured …

Relationship Between Applied Load And Clearance In Suture Knots, Amena S. Shermadou, Steven R. Lindheim, Jerome L. Yaklic, Tarun Goswami
Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications
Ethicon Coated Vicryl absorbable sutures of different diameters were studied in order to determine if a relationship exists between the load and measured clearance. A prototype was designed to simulate knot location. Tensile tests were conducted on the suture knots followed by clearance measurements after each load level was applied. From the results it was concluded that the measured clearance was directly proportional to the amount of load applied to the suture knot. Also, based on the diameter of the suture, the smaller the diameter, the lower was the total displacement of the knot or the clearance.

A Circular Economy Approach To Improve E-Waste Recycling In California: Economic Potential And Policy Options, Kripa Shah
Master's Projects and Capstones
The higher consumption rates of electronic devices along with their short life cycles and few repair options poses a huge challenge for E-waste industries to manage them effectively. E-waste comprises of hazardous materials and toxic constituents that can affect the environment and public health through improper disposal. However, they also contain few valuable materials that, if recovered, can reduce the dependence on virgin raw materials. Circular economy has the potential to utilize these valuable materials and gain environment and socio-economic benefits. The research explains how the adoption of a circular economy approach can help improve the E-waste recycling in California …

A Segmentation-Guided Deep Learning Framework For Leaf Counting, Xijian Fan, Rui Zhou, Tardi Tjahjadi, Sruti Das Choudhury, Qiaolin Ye
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Deep learning-based methods have recently provided a means to rapidly and effectively extract various plant traits due to their powerful ability to depict a plant image across a variety of species and growth conditions. In this study, we focus on dealing with two fundamental tasks in plant phenotyping, i.e., plant segmentation and leaf counting, and propose a two-steam deep learning framework for segmenting plants and counting leaves with various size and shape from two-dimensional plant images. In the first stream, a multi-scale segmentation model using spatial pyramid is developed to extract leaves with different size and shape, where the fine-grained …
Non-Reacting Spray Characteristics Of Gasoline And Diesel With A Heavy-Duty Single-Hole Injector, Tom Tzanetakis, Jaclyn Johnson, Henry Schmidt, William Atkinson, Jeffrey Naber
Non-Reacting Spray Characteristics Of Gasoline And Diesel With A Heavy-Duty Single-Hole Injector, Tom Tzanetakis, Jaclyn Johnson, Henry Schmidt, William Atkinson, Jeffrey Naber
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) is a promising combustion technology that could help alleviate the projected demand for diesel in commercial transport while providing a pathway to achieve upcoming CO2 and criteria pollutant regulations for heavy-duty engines. However, relatively high (i.e., diesel-like) injection pressures are needed to enable GCI across the entire load range while maintaining soot emissions benefits and managing heat release rates. There have only been a limited number of previous studies investigating the spray characteristics of light distillates with high-pressure direct-injection hardware under charge gas conditions relevant to heavy-duty applications. The current work aims to address this issue …
Design Of Polar Materials Using Materials Informatics And First-Principles Calculations, Jon Okenfuss
Design Of Polar Materials Using Materials Informatics And First-Principles Calculations, Jon Okenfuss
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Polar materials have a dipole moment or polarization. Ferroelectrics are a special class of polar materials wherein the polarization can be switched with an external electric field. Because of their characteristics, ferroelectrics are especially useful in adjustable capacitors, non-volatile memories, and sensors. Materials databases like Materials Project contain a large number of materials, but identifying new metastable polar, and more specifically ferroelectric materials can be time consuming. In this project, we train a machine learning model to distinguish between binary compounds having a wurtzite structure—which have a permanent polarization—and their nonpolar zincblende and rock salt polymorphs. We use this model …
