Brass: Bandwidth Reservation On Arista Switching Systems, Angelus Mcnally, Conrad Park, Tyler Tivadar Jun 2022

Brass: Bandwidth Reservation On Arista Switching Systems, Angelus Mcnally, Conrad Park, Tyler Tivadar

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

As networking technologies in the fields of Cloud, Fog, and Edge computing continue to gain popularity and widespread adoption, their contributions to network traffic load and congestion in their respective data processing layers are expected to increase. The implication of this inevitable change is that overall traffic congestion is expected to increase as more devices are connected. As a consequence of this congestion, network performance is expected to decrease, and the best effort nature of network traffic means that there is no guarantee that applications will continue to communicate at rates required for operation. This could prevent certain networking applications …

Photon Attenuation Layer Silicon-Based X-Ray Detector: Quantum Efficiency Investigation And Algorithmic Processing Of Individual Detection Events, Kevin Larkin Jun 2022

Photon Attenuation Layer Silicon-Based X-Ray Detector: Quantum Efficiency Investigation And Algorithmic Processing Of Individual Detection Events, Kevin Larkin

ENGS 88 Honors Thesis (AB Students)

State-of-the-art X-ray detectors either use silicon direct detection—which is inefficient, as silicon is mostly transparent to high-energy X-rays—or rely on expensive scintillators to first down-convert X-ray photons to lower energies. Dr. Eldred Lee of Dartmouth College recently completed doctoral research that suggested the promise of a novel alternative: silicon-based X-ray detectors that utilize photon attenuation layers rather than scintillators. While Dr. Lee’s work is certainly rigorous and meritorious, background noise controls were rendered less effective by circumstances. The work presented in this thesis succeeded in implementing much better background noise controls for a series of new tests to compare the …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Steam flooding is a complex process that has been considered as an effective enhanced oil recovery technique in both heavy oil and light oil reservoirs. Many studies have been conducted on different sets of steam flooding projects using the conventional data analysis methods, while the implementation of machine learning algorithms to find the hidden patterns is rarely found. In this study, a hierarchical clustering algorithm (HCA) coupled with principal component analysis is used to analyze the steam flooding projects worldwide. The goal of this research is to group similar steam flooding projects into the same cluster so that valuable operational …

Understanding Microstructure Heterogeneity In Li-Ion Battery Electrodes Through Localized Measurement Of Ionic Transport, Baichuan Liu Jun 2022

Understanding Microstructure Heterogeneity In Li-Ion Battery Electrodes Through Localized Measurement Of Ionic Transport, Baichuan Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Electrode microstructure influences ionic transport and electronic transport and is a key factor that affects lithium-ion battery performance. Non-uniform microstructure or heterogeneity in battery electrodes has long been observed and leads to non-uniform transport properties. This work provides a better understanding of in-plane heterogeneity at millimeter length scale and through-plane heterogeneity at micrometer length scale, through a combination of experiment and modeling. The first part of this work develops the aperture probe technique, which is an experimental method and associated model to locally estimate ionic transport, represented by MacMullin number, in the electrode. By generating contour maps of MacMullin number, …

Fault Tolerance Analysis Of An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System For Mandatory Lane Changing Decisions In Automated Driving, Matthew Vechione, Ruey Long Cheu

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Past research has developed a binary decision model for mandatory lane changes based on the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). This ANFIS Decision Model (simply called ADEM), developed and tested with the Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) data, mimics the sensory inputs and decisions of human drivers. This research assumed that ADEM will be implemented as part of the automated lane changing system in Automated Vehicles (AVs). The system in AVs will depend on active radar sensors to make measurements. The sensor outputs will be converted into the input parameter values of ADEM. This research tested ADEM's performance when the sensors …

Material Development Toward An Index-Matched Gadolinium-Based Heterogenous Capture-Gated Neutron Detector, Aaron J. Thorum Jun 2022

Material Development Toward An Index-Matched Gadolinium-Based Heterogenous Capture-Gated Neutron Detector, Aaron J. Thorum

Theses and Dissertations

Neutron detection is important in several fields, especially detection of illicit nuclear material. Historically, 3He has been the basis for these technologies. Modern realities have necessitated the development of new technologies and the exploration of new materials to meet this need. One potential solution is known as capture-gating, which is a measurement approach that is good at differentiating between incident neutrons and gamma rays. The key issue is that materials used in current capture-gating devices can suffer from poor optical performance. This is due to the fact that the these detectors, whether composed of a heterogeneous or homogeneous mixture of …

Axial Hypersensitivity Is Associated With Aberrant Nerve Sprouting In A Novel Model Of Disc Degeneration In Female Sprague Dawley Rats, David J. Lillyman, Fei San Lee, Evie C. Barnett, Tyler J. Miller, Moreno Lozano Alvaro, Henry C. Drvol, Rebecca A. Wachs

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Chronic low back pain is a global socioeconomic crisis and treatments are lacking in part due to inadequate models. Etiological research suggests that the predominant pathology associated with chronic low back pain is intervertebral disc degeneration. Various research teams have created rat models of disc degeneration, but the clinical translatability of these models has been limited by an absence of robust chronic painlike behavior. To address this deficit, disc degeneration was induced via an artificial annular tear in female Sprague Dawley rats. The subsequent degeneration, which was allowed to progress for 18-weeks, caused a drastic reduction in disc volume. Furthermore, …

Characterization And Performance Enhancement Of Cement-Based Thermoelectric Materials, Ruchita Jani, Niall Holmes Dr., Roger West, Kevin Gaughan, Xiaoli Liu, Ming Qu, Esther Orisakwee, Lorenzo Stella, Jorge Kohanoff, Hongxi Yin, Bartlomiej Wojciechowski

Articles

Thermoelectric materials enable the direct conversion of thermal to electrical energy. One application of this is ambient heat energy harvesting where relatively stable temperature gradients existing between the inside and outside of a building could be utilized to produce electricity. Buildings can thus change from energy consumers to energy generators. This could ultimately help reduce the surface temperatures and energy consumption of buildings, especially in urban areas. In this paper, research work carried out on developing and characterizing a cement-based thermoelectric material is presented. Cement-based samples are doped with different metal oxides (Bi2O3 and Fe2O3) to enhance their thermoelectric properties, …
