This study investigates the potential of passive monitoring of gait and turning in daily life in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) to identify those at future risk of falls. Seven days of passive monitoring of gait and turning were carried out in a pilot study of 26 PwMS in home settings using wearable inertial sensors. The retrospective fall history was collected at the baseline. After gait and turning data collection in daily life, PwMS were followed biweekly for a year and were classified as fallers if they experienced >1 fall. The ability of short-term passive monitoring of gait and turning, …

Warp-Aware Adaptive Energy Efficiency Calibration For Multi-Gpu Systems, Zhuowei Wang, Xiaoyu Song, Lianglun Cheng, Hai Wan, Wuqing Zhao, Tao Wang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Massive GPU acceleration processors have been used in high-performance computing systems. The Dennard-scaling has led to power and thermal constraints limiting the performance of such systems. The demand for both increased performance and energy-efficiency is highly desired. This paper presents a multi-layer low-power optimisation method for warps and tasks parallelisms. We present a dynamic frequency regulation scheme for performance parameters in terms of load balance and load imbalance. The method monitors the energy parameters in runtime and adjusts adaptively the voltage level to ensure the performance efficiency with energy reduction. The experimental results show that the multi-layer low-power optimisation with …
Integrated Grating Couplers On-A-Chip: Characterizations And Applications, Xuemei Wang
Integrated Grating Couplers On-A-Chip: Characterizations And Applications, Xuemei Wang
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
We demonstrate two applications based on grating coupled phase matching to a slab waveguide: lab-on-a-chip spectrometer using a transversely chirped grating and indoor lidar plenoptic sensor array for Time of flight (ToF) position mapping system. In the first application, a chirped grating waveguide coupler serves as a spatially dependent narrow-band filter. The transversely-chirped-input grating is fabricated on a SiO2-Si3N4-SiO2 waveguide atop a Si substrate by interferometric lithography. Light with wavelength from 400- nm to 700 nm couples into Si3N4 waveguide through transversely chirped grating incident at a 33.5⁰ angle and …

A Lacunarity-Based Index For Spatial Heterogeneity, Ryan H. Scott, Hawwa Falih Kadum, G. Salmaso, Marc Calaf, Raul Bayoan Cal
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Characteri zing spatial heterogeneity is fundamental in numerous areas, yet defining spatial patterns often depends on qualitative assessments or a priori knowledge. Lacunarity analysis is a popular occupancy-based method for identi fy ing relevant length scales in spatially heterogeneous systems. From lacunarity, we identify the ex istence of a point which encapsulates the spatial heterogeneity of a given system. This value sati sfies the conditions for the lac unarity cutoff function and forms the bas is of a heterogeneity index. We evaluate the behavior of both parameters in mono fractal, clustered, and periodic systems. ln addition, we demonstrate the broad …

A Physical Layer Security (Pls) Approach Through Address Fed Mapping Crest Factor Reduction Applicable For 5g/6g Signals, Somayeh Mohammady, David Malone Prof.
Articles
The privacy and security of 5G/6G infrastructures are receiving great attention together with power consumption and efficiency. Here, Physical Layer Security (PLS) is considered and a technique named Address Fed Mapping (AFM) is proposed which not only enhances the physical layer security, but also reduces the effect of high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR), which results in efficiency improvement in OFDM based signals used in beyond 5G and 6G. The AFM is designed based on the idea of randomly generated signals, modifying the original signal to reduce PAPR. Instead of a typical randomization algorithm, a unique key is generated …
Modeling Triaxial Testing With Flexible Membrane To Investigate Effects Of Particle Size On Strength And Strain Properties Of Cohesionless Soil, Thang Pham, Md. Wasif Zaman, Thuy Vu
Modeling Triaxial Testing With Flexible Membrane To Investigate Effects Of Particle Size On Strength And Strain Properties Of Cohesionless Soil, Thang Pham, Md. Wasif Zaman, Thuy Vu
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
A 3D DEM model using Particle Flow Code (PFC3D) software was developed utilizing a bonded-ball flexible membrane approach to study cohesionless soil as a discontinuous discrete material. This approach is not yet widely used because of its complexity and high computational cost, but it allowed the authors to observe the stress-strain curves of triaxial specimens, to single out effects of individual factors on the strength and strain properties, and to observe the formation of the shear band and failure surface. The 3D model was calibrated and verified with experimental data, and a sensitivity analysis was carried out for the microparameters. …
Manufacturing And Characterization Of Continuous Nanofiber-Reinforced Composites, Lucas Barry
Manufacturing And Characterization Of Continuous Nanofiber-Reinforced Composites, Lucas Barry
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Fiber-reinforced composite laminates are some of the most advanced structural materials available. However, delamination remains a critical challenge due to its prevalence in structures and ability to cause catastrophic failure. Recently, high-temperature composites are at the forefront of polymer-matrix composites research, but they are prone to microcracking followed by delamination. Nanoreinforcement of interfaces by continuous nanofibers has been proposed earlier at UNL and produced increased interlaminar fracture resistance in conventional advanced composites. However, no studies have yet been conducted on emerging high-temperature composites. Also, there is insufficient information on the translatability of observed modes I and II interlaminar fracture toughness …
Speed Of Small Droplets On Repellent Surfaces, Addison J. Litton
Speed Of Small Droplets On Repellent Surfaces, Addison J. Litton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A droplet of fluid can slide or roll down an angled surface if the droplet doesn’t stick to the plate (e.g., droplets on glass). The most common surface to allow for such this motion are hydrophobic surfaces. One example is a freshly waxed car where the rain beads up and rolls off. Another example is if a pan is heated to a high enough temperature then when small amounts of water are added the droplet will skitter around on the surface for a moment before boiling away. This high temperature effect where droplets rest on a vapor layer underneath cause …
A Computational Approach To Evaluating Curricular Alignment To The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Philippe Lemarchand, Mick Mckeever, Cormac Macmahon, Philip Owende
A Computational Approach To Evaluating Curricular Alignment To The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Philippe Lemarchand, Mick Mckeever, Cormac Macmahon, Philip Owende
Articles
The United Nations (UN) considers universities to be key actors in the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Yet, efforts to evaluate the embeddedness of the SDGs in university curricula tend to rely on manual analyses of curriculum documents for keywords contained in sustainability lexica, with little consideration for the diverse contexts of such keywords. The efficacy of these efforts, relying on expert co-elicitation in both subject-matter contexts and sustainability, suffers from drawbacks associated with keyword searches, such as limited coverage of key concepts, difficulty in extracting intended meaning and potential for greenwashing through “keyword stuffing.” This paper presents …
Submodularity And Local Search Approaches For Maximum Capture Problems Under Generalized Extreme Value Models, Tien Thanh Dam, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai
Submodularity And Local Search Approaches For Maximum Capture Problems Under Generalized Extreme Value Models, Tien Thanh Dam, Thuy Anh Ta, Tien Mai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study the maximum capture problem in facility location under random utility models, i.e., the problem of seeking to locate new facilities in a competitive market such that the captured user demand is maximized, assuming that each customer chooses among all available facilities according to a random utility maximization model. We employ the generalized extreme value (GEV) family of discrete choice models and show that the objective function in this context is monotonic and submodular. This finding implies that a simple greedy heuristic can always guarantee a (1−1/e) approximation solution. We further develop a new algorithm combining a greedy heuristic, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Underbalanced perforation can substantially reduce formation damage and improve the efficiency of production operation. The field in question is a giant oil field in Southwest Iran, with over 350,000 bbl/day production rates. Reservoir X is the main reservoir of the field and includes 139 horizontal wells out of the total of 185 production wells drilled in the field. Despite its technical difficulties, under-balance perforation has been proven to result in high productivity ratios and has been shown to reduce workover costs if appropriately conducted. Therefore, this study investigated a customized underbalanced tubing conveyed perforation to enhance oil production. First, post-drilling …

The foveal cone mosaic can be directly visualized using adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO). Previous studies in individuals with normal vision report wide variability in the topography of the foveal cone mosaic, especially the value of peak cone density (PCD). While these studies often involve a human grader, there have been no studies examining intergrader reproducibility of foveal cone mosaic metrics. Here we re-analyzed published AOSLO foveal cone images from 44 individuals to assess the relationship between the cone density centroid (CDC) location and the location of PCD. Across 5 graders with variable experience, we found a measurement error …
Brain Electrophysiology In The Presence Of Acoustic Stimuli, Kristen Howorka
Brain Electrophysiology In The Presence Of Acoustic Stimuli, Kristen Howorka
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Neuroscience is the study of the structure and function of the brain. This is inclusive of neurochemistry, physiology, anatomy, molecular biology, computer science, engineering and many adjacent disciplines. While there have been a multitude of studies in this field, there are still so many questions left unanswered about the brain. One such question pertains to how animals and humans perceive stimuli from the environmental periphery, a neuroscience sub-area known as sensory processing.
By design, humans have neurological states and receptors which organically take in all of these stimuli and decipher them for everyday needs. Sensory input enables subjects to perform …
Selective Recovery Of Rare Earth Elements Using A Hydroxyapatite-Chitosan Composite, Zixuan Xie
Selective Recovery Of Rare Earth Elements Using A Hydroxyapatite-Chitosan Composite, Zixuan Xie
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Rare earth elements (REEs) have special properties that make them extremely important in modern clean energy technology. With rising global demand and increasing supply risks, sustainable use of rare earth resources is increasingly imperative. Coal fly ash is a promising source for recovering REEs, but the coexistence of large amounts of non-target elements requires recovery materials with a high preference for REEs. For this recovery study, we found that hydroxyapatite (HAP) that has high density of phosphate groups is efficient in selective REE recovery. The addition of chitosan (CS) as a binder increased the mechanical stability of composites and their …
A Modification To The Skiving Process For The Manufacture Of Offset Geometry Strip-Fin Heat Sinks, Daniel Luberda
A Modification To The Skiving Process For The Manufacture Of Offset Geometry Strip-Fin Heat Sinks, Daniel Luberda
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
High-powered electronics are extremely prevalent, and a vast majority of these devices use some form of heat sinks as either an active or passive cooling device. Although two-phase cooling technology has rapidly advanced to accommodate increasing heat loads on modern electronics, the added costs and complication inherent in two-phase cooling solutions makes effective air-cooled heat sinks potentially valuable.
A more effective heat sink can occupy a smaller footprint to dissipate the same heat flux, meaning material and packaging costs can be reduced. Aluminum heat sinks are produced through a variety of manufacturing processes, including machining, bonding, extrusion, casting, forging, 3D …
Foundations For Finite-State Modelling Of A Two-Dimensional Airfoil That Reverses Direction, Jake Michael Oscar Welsh
Foundations For Finite-State Modelling Of A Two-Dimensional Airfoil That Reverses Direction, Jake Michael Oscar Welsh
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Current 3-D finite-state wake models are incapable of simulating a maneuver in which the sign of the free-stream velocity changes direction and the rotor enters its own wake -- as might occur in the case of a helicopter which ascends and then descends. It is the purpose of this work to create a 2-D finite-state wake model which is capable of handling changes in free-stream direction as a precursor to development of a 3-D model that can do the same.
The 2-D finite-state model used for reentry modifications is an existing model created by Peters, Johnson, and Karunamoorthy. By the …
Predicting Surgical Outcome In Patients With Recurrent Patellar Dislocation, Dario De Caro
Predicting Surgical Outcome In Patients With Recurrent Patellar Dislocation, Dario De Caro
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Introduction
Lateral dislocation of the patella is a common injury in active adolescents and young adults. Patients who are ultimately managed surgically have a significantly lower risk of recurrent dislocation. However, determining the optimal surgical treatment remains a challenge, with patients sometimes undergoing multiple surgeries prior to successful stabilization. The aim of this study is to computationally evaluate patients that have undergone multiple surgeries to correct for recurrent lateral patellar dislocation and predict their clinical outcome.
Methods
Our patient cohort consisted of 16 patients with patella dislocation. Patient-specific imaging were used to create three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models of …
Open-Source Workflows For Reproducible Molecular Simulation, Jenny W. Fothergill
Open-Source Workflows For Reproducible Molecular Simulation, Jenny W. Fothergill
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
We apply molecular simulation to predict the equilibrium structure of organic molecular aggregates and how these structures determine material properties, with a focus on software engineering practices for ensuring correctness. Because simulations are implemented in software, there is potential for authentic scientific reproducibility in such work: An entire experimental apparatus (codebase) can be given to another investigator who should be able to use the same processes to find the same answers. Yet in practice, there are many barriers which stand in the way of reproducible molecular simulations that we address through automation, generalization, and software packaging. Collaboration on and application …
Innovative Foundation Alternative Inspired From Tree Roots, Macie Larranaga
Innovative Foundation Alternative Inspired From Tree Roots, Macie Larranaga
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
It is not easy to find a more efficient foundation system than the roots of a tree. Trees create a vast three-dimensional network of roots to support and anchor the critical above-ground trunks, leaves, and limbs. In this work, investigations are made for the feasibility of imitating such a technique and creating similar networks to support civil infrastructure, particularly those subjected to moment loads such as traffic signal posts. Some of the raised questions were: Is it feasible to have a shallow tree root-based foundation system to provide the same capacities as conventional foundation alternatives? If this is feasible: What …
Seamless Transition Of A Microgrid Between Grid-Connected And Islanded Mode, Julie B. Matarweh
Seamless Transition Of A Microgrid Between Grid-Connected And Islanded Mode, Julie B. Matarweh
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on improving the behavior of inverters during transition periods from islanded mode to grid-connected mode (GC) and vice-versa. A systematic approach is presented to add smart features to inverters to enhance their capability to cope with sudden changes in the power system.
The importance of microgrids lies in their ability to provide a stable and reliable source of power for critical loads in the presence of faults. For this purpose, a design is proposed consisting of a distributed energy resource (DER), battery energy storage system (BESS) and a load connected through a bypass switch with the main …

Within industries, governments, and accreditation organizations, there has been a push to incorporate sustainability concepts into their models. Universities like Boise State University (BSU) have already begun to place greater emphasis in inclusion of sustainability concepts in different engineering department curricula. As part of this effort, BSU plans to redesign courses to integrate sustainability concepts using active learning modules (ALMs) suited for each grade level and discipline. The effectiveness of these modules will be evaluated across disciplines. In support of this larger goal, the work in this study will specifically focus on mechanical engineering students.
A survey instrument was developed …
Reproducible Prediction Of Organic Semiconductor Properties Through Open Source Software Development, James Rushing
Reproducible Prediction Of Organic Semiconductor Properties Through Open Source Software Development, James Rushing
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Semiconducting materials made from carbon-based molecules are potential replacements for inorganic semiconductors, but with lower costs of processing. Devices made from organic semiconductors can be produced at scale by inkjet printing and roll-to-roll manufacturing of these molecules in solution or melt phases. The efficiency of these organic devices is dependent on the structure of the active layer, so controlling the morphology of organic molecules through self-assembly during manufacturing is a key challenge to realizing their utility. Molecular self-assembly depends on the chemical structure of the molecules, how key moieties interact with each other and with any solvent present, and the …
Data-Driven Passivity-Based Control Of Underactuated Robotic Systems, Wankun Sirichotiyakul
Data-Driven Passivity-Based Control Of Underactuated Robotic Systems, Wankun Sirichotiyakul
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Classical control strategies for robotic systems are based on the idea that feedback control can be used to override the natural dynamics of the machines. Passivity-based control (Pbc) is a branch of nonlinear control theory that follows a similar approach, where the natural dynamics is modified based on the overall energy of the system. This method involves transforming a nonlinear control system, through a suitable control input, into another fictitious system that has desirable stability characteristics. The majority of Pbc techniques require the discovery of a reasonable storage function, which acts as a Lyapunov function candidate that can be …

Study As Form-Of-Life: Meditations On Schooling, Enjoyment, And The Inoperative Life, Bryan K. Weeks
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to explore what potential that the concept of 'inoperativity' has in the philosophy and theory of education. I will discuss the method of critique used which aims to think through the problems in existing theory rather than discard good thinking when problems are found. The strengths and weaknesses of deschooling and democratic approaches will be at the center of this critique. As a response to the weaknesses of both, the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, focusing on the way that interiority and enjoyment are essential concepts for the philosophy of education, as well as Giorgio …
Solution Synthesis And Additive Manufacturing Of Bismuth Telluride Nanoflakes For Flexible Energy Harvesting, Ariel E. Weltner
Solution Synthesis And Additive Manufacturing Of Bismuth Telluride Nanoflakes For Flexible Energy Harvesting, Ariel E. Weltner
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Flexible thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are energy harvesting devices which convert temperature differences into electrical power. These devices require no moving parts and offer silent and autonomous operation. The variety of suitable materials covering a broad range of operating temperatures positions TEGs as a promising renewable energy source using waste heat recovery, especially for space and microgravity applications. Conventional manufacturing of flexible electronic and thermoelectric devices requires complicated and relatively expensive processing, which limits the capabilities of in-space manufacturing. Additive manufacturing (AM) expands the use of flexible electronics to new surfaces, applications, and recently, low gravity conditions. Plasma jet printing (PJP) …
Process-Property Linkages Construction For Inkjet Printing With Machine Learning, Fataneh Jenabi
Process-Property Linkages Construction For Inkjet Printing With Machine Learning, Fataneh Jenabi
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Printed electronics are emerging technologies that can potentially revolutionize the manufacturing of electronic devices. One promising technology for printed electronics is inkjet printing. Inkjet printing offers both low-cost processing and high resolution. Being a subset of additive manufacturing, inkjet printing minimizes waste and is compatible with a wide range of inks. However, inkjet printing of electronic devices is still in its infancy. One major challenge for inkjet printing is the complexity of the process optimization and uncertain high throughput production. To achieve a high-quality print, there is a complex parameter space of materials and processing parameters that needs to be …
High-Isolation Antenna Technique For Cubesat-Borne, Continuous-Waveform Radar, Logan E. Voigt
High-Isolation Antenna Technique For Cubesat-Borne, Continuous-Waveform Radar, Logan E. Voigt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Radar is important in target tracking, imaging, and weather prediction applications. As technology is increasingly miniaturized, there is a push for smaller radar. Research and exploration in outer space also benefit from small, low-power technologies. The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s RainCube was the first successful CubeSat-borne radar. A CubeSat is a type of small satellite that conforms to specific size and weight standards. Radar technology benefits from additional research on how to further miniaturize radar payloads.
Integrating the transmit and receive antennas on the solar panels removes the need for antenna-deployment mechanisms, preserving space on the CubeSat. This thesis also …
Sustain Water Conservation Behaviors Using Nonparametric Ranking And Social Marketing, Mahmudur Rahman Aveek
Sustain Water Conservation Behaviors Using Nonparametric Ranking And Social Marketing, Mahmudur Rahman Aveek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Circulation of water use feedback and conservation messaging are strategies implemented to reduce water demand on a short-term (seasonal) basis. Often considered a less impactful strategy than other tactics such as price increments and usage restrictions, authorities mostly use feedback in informational campaigns with a focus to apprise users about their water use. Such conservation programs have had limited success that has been attributed to the fact that the information provided with the feedback campaigns was generic and did not motivate users enough to sustain their water-saving behaviors. However, the advent of disaggregation technologies that can provide appliance-wise water use …

Advancing The Cyberinfrastructure For Smart Water Metering And Water Demand Modeling, Nour A. Attallah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
With rapid growth of urban populations and limited water resources, achieving an appropriate balance between water supply capacity and residential water demand poses a significant challenge to water supplying agencies. With the recent emergence of smart metering technology, where water use can be monitored and recorded at high resolution (e.g., observations of water use every 5 seconds), most existing research has been aimed at providing water managers with detailed information about the water use behavior of their consumers and the performance of water using fixtures. However, replacing existing meters with smart meters is expensive, and effectively using data produced by …
