Decoding Human Movement Through Experiments And Simulation, Vishnu Deep Chandran Aug 2022

Decoding Human Movement Through Experiments And Simulation, Vishnu Deep Chandran

Dissertations

The ability to walk or move independently plays a decisive role in one's quality of life. This human ability requires complex coordination with several systems, such as the nervous, muscular, skeletal, and sensory organs, to execute movement tasks. Hence, any disorder of these systems from injury, disease, or aging severely affects the ability to walk or move independently. Disabilities that impair movement severely affect the quality of life. Therefore, studying the changes affecting human movement is necessary to improve the lives of individuals with impaired movement. Since human movement is complex and many systems interact in non-intuitive ways, the overarching …

Formation Of Oil Particle Aggregates And The Impact On The Fate Of Oil, Wen Ji Aug 2022

Formation Of Oil Particle Aggregates And The Impact On The Fate Of Oil, Wen Ji

Dissertations

Spilled oil slicks are likely to break into droplets offshore due to wave energy. The fate and transport of such droplets are affected by suspended particles in local marine environment, through forming oil particle aggregates (OPAs). OPA formation is affected by various factors, including the properties of the particles and oil, the mixing energy and duration, etc. To investigate the impact of these factors, lab scale experiments are conducted by using seawater (both artificial and natural) and kaolinite and silica to simulate the formation of OPAs in baffled flasks. In the first experiment, 9 gm and 3 gm spherical silica …

The instrument consists of two independent, identical EBS cameras pointing in two fixed directions, toward the nominal forward direction of flight and toward the nominal Nadir direction. The payload employs stock DAVIS 240C focal plane arrays along with custom-built control and readout electronics to remotely interface with the cameras. To predict the sensor’s ability to effectively record sprites and lightning, we explore temporal response characteristics of the DAVIS 240C and …

Optimizing Build Plate Adhesion Of Polymers In Fused Granule Fabrication Processes, Alex Schroeder, Jason Weaver Aug 2022

Optimizing Build Plate Adhesion Of Polymers In Fused Granule Fabrication Processes, Alex Schroeder, Jason Weaver

Faculty Publications

Perhaps the most crucial element of fused granule fabrication (FGF) is material adhesion; in order to achieve a successful product, the material being printed must adhere to the build plate. For optimal products, the material should only adhere to the build plate until the print is complete, then be easily removable. This paper examines the effects of different build plates, environments, and bonding agents on material adhesion during the FGF process in a CNC mill machine. The force to remove polycarbonate (PC) and polypropylene (PP) from build plates was tested with various bonding agents. Except in one case, the adhesive …

A Comparison Of Layer Deposition And Open Molding Of Petg By Fused Pellet Fabrication In An Additive Manufacturing System, Alex Gibson, Jason Weaver

Faculty Publications

Additive manufacturing continues to offer new possibilities in both production and economics. The industry has quickly adopted it to rapidly produce parts that would be difficult or cost preventative otherwise. Recent innovation has expanded its capabilities, however there are still significant limitations. Most AM processes are restricted by materials available, in producing large parts, or by not achieving material deposition speeds to make certain products feasible. In addition, tight tolerances for features and surfaces cannot be produced without substantial post processing. High-speed Fused Pellet Fabrication (FPF) in combination with Hybrid Manufacturing (HM) offers expanded capabilities as additive and subtractive process …

Acoustic Source Localization Using Straight Line Approximations, Swarnadeep Bagchi, Ruairí De Fréin Aug 2022

Acoustic Source Localization Using Straight Line Approximations, Swarnadeep Bagchi, Ruairí De Fréin

Conference papers

The short paper extends an acoustic signal delay estimation method to general anechoic scenario using image processing techniques. The technique proposed in this paper localizes acoustic speech sources by creating a matrix of phase versus frequency histograms, where the same phases are stacked in appropriate bins. With larger delays and multiple sources coexisting in the same matrix, it becomes cluttered with activated bins. This results in high intensity spots on the spectrogram, making source discrimination difficult. In this paper, we have employed morphological filtering, chain-coding and straight line approximations to ignore noise and enhance the target signal features. Lastly, Hough …

Reality Analagous Synthetic Dataset Generation With Daylight Variance For Deep Learning Classification, Thomas Lee, Susan Mckeever, Jane Courtney

Conference papers

For the implementation of Autonomously navigating Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) in the real world, it must be shown that safe navigation is possible in all real world scenarios. In the case of UAVs powered by Deep Learning algorithms, this is a difficult task to achieve, as the weak point of any trained network is the reduction in predictive capacity when presented with unfamiliar input data. It is possible to train for more use cases, however more data is required for this, requiring time and manpower to acquire. In this work, a potential solution to the manpower issues of exponentially scaling …

Quantum computing has been gaining momentum as a result of recent technological advances. Existing cryptographic systems rely on the difficult problems that can be solved by sufficiently powerful quantum computers. As the quantum age approaches, the desire to discover new difficult problems that cannot be solved by quantum systems has increased. Lattice-based cryptography is a prominent tool for the post-quantum era that facilitates the implementation of encryption systems for practical applications.

The Learning with Error (LWE) and Ring-LWE problems introduce new lattice hardness assumptions that have been incorporated into public-key cryptosystems to facilitate the implementation of numerous privacy-enhancing applications. Fully …

A Deep Learning Approach For Airport Runway Identification From Satellite Imagery, Mahmut Gemici Aug 2022

A Deep Learning Approach For Airport Runway Identification From Satellite Imagery, Mahmut Gemici

Theses and Dissertations

The United States lacks a comprehensive national database of private Prior Permission Required (PPR) airports. The primary reason such a database does not exist is that there are no federal regulatory obligations for these facilities to have their information re-evaluated or updated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or the local state Department of Transportation (DOT) once the data has been entered into the system. The often outdated and incorrect information about landing sites presents a serious risk factor in aviation safety. In this thesis, we present a machine learning approach for detecting airport landing sites from Google Earth satellite …

A Network Flow Approach For Constellation Planning, Skylar A. Cox, Greg N. Droge, John H. Humble, Konnor D. Andrews

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A graph-based network flow approach to constellation planning is presented that respects spacecraft resources and mission constraints to arrive at a preliminary operational schedule. The method discretizes task fulfillment opportunity windows into graph nodes and then adds edges based on feasibility of transition between these opportunities, either by slew maneuvers or extended-time task fulfillment during downlink operations. Intelligent graph pruning is applied to improve computation performance and provide a versatile planning capability with a minimal impact on the resulting solution. A network flow formulation allows for a simultaneous search for spacecraft plans using a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP). The …

Advancing The Necessary Foundations For Empirical Energy Rebound Estimates: A Partial Equilibrium Analysis Framework, Matthew K. Heun, Gregor Semieniuk, Paul E. Brockway

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Widespread implementation of energy efficiency is a key greenhouse gas emissions mitigation measure, but rebound can “take back” energy savings. However, conceptual foundations lag behind empirical estimates of the size of rebound. We posit that development of solid analytical frameworks for rebound is hampered by the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, involving both economics and energy analysis. In this paper, we help advance a rigorous analytical framework that starts at the microeconomics of rebound and is approachable for both energy analysts and economists. We include emplacement, substitution, and income rebound effects and link them to macro rebound. Novel graphs show …

Three-Phase Ac Induction Motor Speed Control Based On Variable Speed Driver, Abdelrahim Ahmed Mohammed Ate, Rihab Gafar, Xiuyun Sun, Tahleel Abozead

Makara Journal of Technology

Massive loss of power is a concern for many countries because of the high power consumption of alternating current (AC) motors. The motor speed should be controlled to alleviate this problem and save more power. This paper proposes a simple simulation for a variable speed driver (VSD) to control the three-phase induction motor speed. The VSD consists of three parts. The converter performs from full bridge diodes to convert single-phase AC voltage into direct current voltage, and then this voltage is filtered by the RL filter and transferred to the last part, which is the inverter. The model was simulated …
