Design Of Arbitrary Planar Optical Devices With Full Phase Control Using Nanoimprinting Of Refractive Index, Matthew Panipinto

All Theses

Planar optical devices offer a lightweight solution to the constraints found in traditional optical devices. While subwavelength patterning of optics offers attractive performance and size, traditional fabrication methods demand a trade-off between resolution and throughput that presents a significant hurdle for the widespread use of subwavelength devices. Nanoimprinting of refractive index (NIRI) is a novel fabrication method pioneered in previous work that offers promise in mitigating the throughput issues that hamstring traditional fabrication methods. However, NIRI has not been shown to impart full $2\pi$ phase control in planar optical devices, nor has a method for fabricating arbitrary designs using the …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Poor outcomes of peripheral arterial disease stenting are often attributed to the inability of stents to accommodate the complex biomechanics of the flexed lower limb. Abrasion damage caused by rubbing of the stent against the artery wall during limb movement plays a significant role in reconstruction failure but has not been characterized. Our goals were to develop a method of assessing the abrasiveness of peripheral nitinol stents and apply it to several commercial devices. Misago, AbsolutePro, Innova, Zilver, SmartControl, SmartFlex, and Supera stents were deployed inside electrospun nanofibrillar tubes with femoropopliteal artery-mimicking mechanical properties and subjected to cyclic axial compression …

The nuclear power industry has growing interest in qualifying powder metallurgy with hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP) to replace traditional alloy fabrication methods for reactor structural components. But there is little known about the response of PM-HIP alloys to reactor conditions. This study directly compares the response of PM-HIP to forged Ni-base Alloy 625 under neutron irradiation doses ∼0.5–1 displacements per atom (dpa) at temperatures ranging ∼321–385 °C. Post-irradiation examination involves microstructure characterization, ASTM E8 uniaxial tensile testing, and fractography. Up through 1 dpa, PM-HIP Alloy 625 appears more resistant to irradiation-induced cavity nucleation than its forged counterpart, and consequently experiences …

Towards Scalable Spectral Clustering Via Spectrum-Preserving Sparsification, Yongyu Wang, Zhuo Feng Nov 2022

Towards Scalable Spectral Clustering Via Spectrum-Preserving Sparsification, Yongyu Wang, Zhuo Feng

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Eigenvalue decomposition of Laplacian matrices for large nearest-neighbor (NN)graphs is the major computational bottleneck in spectral clustering (SC). To fundamentally address this computational challenge in SC, we propose a scalable spectral sparsification framework that enables to construct nearly-linear-sized ultra-sparse NN graphs with guaranteed preservation of key eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the original Laplacian. The proposed method is based on the latest theoretical results in spectral graph theory and thus can be applied to robustly handle general undirected graphs. By leveraging a nearly-linear time spectral graph topology sparsification phase and a subgraph scaling phase via stochastic gradient descent (SGD) iterations, our …

Asking The Right Questions To Solve Algebraic Word Problems, Ege Yi̇ği̇t Çeli̇k, Zeynel Orulluoğlu, Ridvan Mertoğlu, Selma Teki̇r

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Word algebra problems are among challenging AI tasks as they combine natural language understanding with a formal equation system. Traditional approaches to the problem work with equation templates and frame the task as a template selection and number assignment to the selected template. The recent deep learning-based solutions exploit contextual language models like BERT and encode the natural language text to decode the corresponding equation system. The proposed approach is similar to the template-based methods as it works with a template and fills in the number slots. Nevertheless, it has contextual understanding because it adopts a question generation and answering …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We use a recently-developed, turbulence-informed physics-based model to study frost buildup over a flat plate subjected to turbulent flow. The plate temperature is held fixed but varied across simulations in the range −10◦C ≤ T∗ p ≤ −5◦C. Similarly, the free-stream temperature and humidity ratio are also held fixed but varied across simulations in the range 0◦C ≤ T∗∞ ≤ 20◦C and 3.77 × 10−3 ≤ ew∞ ≤ 1.47×10−2, respectively. We find the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, when scaled by the frost surface to free stream temperature and humidity ratio difference, respectively, to become independent of free-stream temperature and humidity …

Event-Triggered Optimal Adaptive Control Of Partially Unknown Linear Continuous-Time Systems With State Delay, Rohollah Moghadam, Vignesh Narayanan, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Publications

This paper proposes an event-triggered optimal adaptive output feedback control design approach by utilizing integral reinforcement learning (IRL) for linear time-invariant systems with state delay and uncertain internal dynamics. In the proposed approach, the general optimal control problem is formulated into the game-theoretic framework by treating the event-triggering threshold and the optimal control policy as players. A cost function is defined and a value functional, which includes the delayed system output, is considered. First, by using the value functional and applying stationarity conditions using the Hamiltonian function, the output game delay algebraic Riccati equation (OGDARE) and optimal control policy are …

Fastklee: Faster Symbolic Execution Via Reducing Redundant Bound Checking Of Type-Safe Pointers, Haoxin Tu, Lingxiao Jiang, Xuhua Ding, He Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Symbolic execution (SE) has been widely adopted for automatic program analysis and software testing. Many SE engines (e.g., KLEE or Angr) need to interpret certain Intermediate Representations (IR) of code during execution, which may be slow and costly. Although a plurality of studies proposed to accelerate SE, few of them consider optimizing the internal interpretation operations. In this paper, we propose FastKLEE, a faster SE engine that aims to speed up execution via reducing redundant bound checking of type-safe pointers during IR code interpretation. Specifically, in FastKLEE, a type inference system is first leveraged to classify pointer types (i.e., safe …
