Engineering Thermostable Regulators For Inducible Gene Expression In Thermophiles, Connor M. Joyce
Engineering Thermostable Regulators For Inducible Gene Expression In Thermophiles, Connor M. Joyce
Honors Theses and Capstones
Thermophilic bacteria have attracted research interest due to their ability to grow at high temperatures ranging from 45 °C to 75 °C with some extreme thermophiles able to survive nearly boiling temperatures. They are valuable sources of thermostable biocatalysts and many have great potential as industrial hosts for biofuel production because fermentation at high temperatures has advantages such as reduced processing costs and lower risk of contamination compared with mesophilic bacteria. For example, some Geobacillus species has been shown to have high solvent tolerance, making them good candidates as host for alcohol production. To develop them as industrial hosts, large …

Injectable Gelatin-Silk Fibroin Composite Hydrogels For In Situ Cell Encapsulation, Ryann D. Boudreau
Honors Theses and Capstones
Hydrogels are widely used tools for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Characterized as biofunctional, water-based polymer matrices with tunable mechanical properties, hydrogels have promising but limited applications in biomedical engineering, due to poor and static matrix strength. Here we plan to rectify this issue by introducing a new hydrogel made from a composite of gelatin and silk fibroin crosslinked by microbial transglutaminase (mTG) instantly and beta sheet formation gradually, respectively. This interpenetrating network (IPN) shows enhanced mechanical stiffness and strength compared to gelatin hydrogels, and is capable of encapsulating human cells with high viability demonstrated by the encapsulation of human …
Development And Implementation Of A Pressure-Temperature Control System For The Physical Vapor Deposition Of Copper And Niobium From A Molybdenum Filament In The Development Of Superconducting 3d Printed Rf Cavity Particle Accelerators, Chandler J. Fleuette
Honors Theses and Capstones
This report covers the development of the pressure-temperature control system used in the production of small superconducting RF cavities for particle accelerators. To test the validity of the created program, a model for the process was created and tested. The model was used to fine tune the control system before integrating it into the lab. The end goal of the control system is to measure the pressure inside of a deposition vacuum chamber, convert that pressure to a temperature, and use that temperature in tandem with a PID controller to control the current passing though a molybdenum filament which is …

Elastic fibres play a key role in bodily functions where fatigue resistance and elastic recovery are necessary while regulating phenotype, proliferation and migration in cells. While in vivo elastic fibres are created at a late foetal stage, a major obstacle in the development of engineered tissue is that human vascular smooth muscle cells (hVSMCs), one of the principal elastogenic cells, are unable to spontaneously promote elastogenesis in vitro. Therefore, the overall aim of this study was to activate elastogenesis in vitro by hVSMCs seeded in fibrin, collagen, glycosaminoglycan (FCG) scaffolds, following the addition of recombinant human tropoelastin. This combination …

Significant efforts have been made to promote gender equality in higher education (HE) in Europe. Examples include the establishment of the Athena Swan Charter in the UK in 2005 and the 2019 launch of the Irène Curie Fellowship scheme by Eindhoven University of Technology. But which initiatives address broader diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) challenges in HE? And which are specifically focused on engineering education? This exploratory study aims to improve our understanding of the ways in which a set of European HE Institutions engaged in engineering education address DEI at an organisation level, and how this is communicated within …

Effect Of Ultra-High Pulse Frequency On The Resolution In The Electrochemical Deposition Of Nickel, Abishek Balsamy Kamaraj, Natalie Reed, Murali Sundaram
Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Presentations And Conference Materials
Using localized electrochemical deposition (LECD) as a mask-less direct writing methodology, metal shapes are printed. The electrochemical double-layer capacitance at ultra-high frequencies is hypothesized to cause a localized deposition and the effect of pulse frequency on the current density is modeled to predict the deposition resolution and rate of deposition. Experimental results confirm that the deposition resolution and efficiency of the LECD process increase with the increase of pulse frequency. Deposition resolution 80% smaller than the tool diameter is feasible in the LECD of nickel used with a ø 250 μm tool at 1 MHz pulsed power.

Mind The Gap: Exploring The Challenges And Opportunities For Social Enterprise In Vietnam, Paul Umfreville, Christine Bonnin
Articles
Social enterprise is a maturing area of activity within the development sector, and in Vietnam the sector has expanded significantly over the last thirty years, providing social services to communities and individuals experiencing socio-economic exclusion. Initially growing in a legislative vacuum, social enterprise currently appears to be flourishing following recognition by the state. However, the sector now faces new challenges as it matures. With Vietnam’s attainment of middle-income status, the international development funding previously available is now limited and the focus is on capacity and viability. Based on findings from interviews with representatives from a wide range of social enterprises …

A Critical Analysis Of The Application Of Visual Programming To Increase Efficiency In Bim Object Metadata Delivery Workflows During The Delivery Phase Of An Asset, Kieran Lakhera O'Shea, Davitt Lamon
Reports
Uniclass 2015 data generally seems to be overlooked in favour of the more valuable COBie data when discussion begins about BIM model metadata and, at present, few studies are devoted to it and its delivery through automated methodologies. Classification is a key part of the BIM process – without the ability to distinguish one object from another a BIM model lacks the definition required for implementing downstream applications such as functional simulations, compliance checking and other automated technologies. The use of classification data is, of course, not the only way of identifying objects but it is currently the only standardised …

Optimal coordination of directional over-current relays (DOCRs) is a crucial task in ensuring the security and reliability of power system network. In this paper, a hybridization of an improved particle swarm optimization and linear programming (IPSO-LP) is proposed to solve DOCRs coordination problem. The considered decision variables in the optimization are plug setting current, time multiplier setting, type of relay, and type of curve. By considering these parameters in the optimization, the best relay operating time can be determined. Furthermore, the proposed technique also considered the continuous values of pick-up current setting (PSC) and time setting multiplier (TMS). Test on …

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is a recent promising learning approach that is similar to human vision systems. ZSL essentially allows machines to categorize objects without requiring labeled training data. In principle, ZSL proposes a novel recognition model by specifying merely the attributes of the category. Recently, several sophisticated approaches have been introduced to address the challenges regarding this problem. Embarrassingly simple approach to zeroshot learning (ESZSL) is one of the critical of those approaches that basically proposes a simple but efficient linear code solution. However, the performance of the ESZSL model mainly depends on parameter selection. Metaheuristic algorithms are considered as …

Fpga Implementation Of Lsd-Omp For Real-Time Ecg Signal Reconstruction, Önder Polat, Sema Kayhan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Compressed sensing is widely used to compress electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, but the major challenges of the compressed sensing algorithms are their highly complex signal reconstruction processes. In this paper, a reconfigurable high-speed and low-power field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of the least support denoising-orthogonal matching pursuit (LSD-OMP) algorithm for the real-time reconstruction of the ECG signals is presented. The contribution of this study is two-fold: Firstly, LSD-OMP can pick more than one element at each iteration and reconstruct the sparse signal using less number of iterations as compared to the standard OMP algorithms. Latency of the proposed design is therefore …

A Novel Hybrid Decision-Based Filter And Universal Edge-Based Logical Smoothingadd-On To Remove Impulsive Noise, Rajanbir Singh Ghumaan, Prateek Jeet Singh Sohi, Nikhil Sharma, Bharat Garg
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper presents a novel hybrid filter along with a universal extension to remove salt and pepper noise even at a very high noise density. The proposed filter initially specifies a threshold and then denoises the image using a combination of linear, nonlinear, and probabilistic techniques. Furthermore, to improve the quality, a universal add-on is presented which uses edge detection and smoothening techniques to brush out fine details from the restored image. To evaluate the efficacy, the proposed and existing filtering techniques are implemented in MATLAB and simulated with benchmark images. The simulation results show that the proposed filter is …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Multiple instance learning (MIL) aims to classify objects with complex structures and covers a wide range of real-world data mining applications. In MIL, objects are represented by a bag of instances instead of a single instance, and class labels are provided only for the bags. Some of the earlier MIL methods focus on solving MIL problem under the standard MIL assumption, which requires at least one positive instance in positive bags and all remaining instances are negative. This study proposes a linear programming framework to learn instance level contributions to bag label without emposing the standart assumption. Each instance of …

A 1-Kw Wireless Power Transfer System For Electric Vehicle Charging Withhexagonal Flat Spiral Coil, Emrullah Aydin, Mehmet Ti̇mur Aydemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology is getting more attention in these days as a clean, safe, and easy alternative to charging batteries in several power levels. Different coil types and system structures have been proposed in the literature. Hexagonal coils, which have a common usage for low power applications, have not been well studied for high and mid power applications such as in electric vehicle (EV) battery charging. In order to fill this knowledge gap, the self and mutual inductance equations of a hexagonal coil are obtained, and these equations have been used to design a 1 kW WPT system …

The rate of internet usage in the world is over 62% and this rate is increasing day by day. With this increase, it becomes important to ensure the confidentiality of the information in the traffic flowing over the internet. Encryption algorithms and protocols are used for this purpose. This situation, which is beneficial for normal users, is also used by attackers to hide. Cyber attackers or hackers gain the ability to bypass security precautions such as IDS/IPS and antivirus systems with using encrypted traffic. Since payload analysis cannot be performed without deciphering the encrypted traffic, existing commercial security solutions fall …

Slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) are two of the most important sleep stages that are considered in many studies. Detection of these two sleep stages will help researchers in many applications to detect sleeprelated diseases and disorders and also in many fields of neuroscience studies such as cognitive impairment and memory consolidation. Since manual sleep staging is time-consuming, subjective, and expensive; designing an efficient automatic sleep scoring system will overcome some of these difficulties. Many studies have proposed automatic sleep staging systems with different methods. In recent years, deep learning methods show their potential in different …

Machine learning (ML) on Big Data has gone beyond the capacity of traditional machines and technologies. ML for large scale datasets is the current focus of researchers. Most of the ML algorithms primarily suffer from memory constraints, complex computation, and scalability issues. The least square twin support vector machine (LSTSVM) technique is an extended version of support vector machine (SVM). It is much faster as compared to SVM and is widely used for classification tasks. However, when applied to large scale datasets having millions or billions of samples and/or large number of classes, it causes computational and storage bottlenecks. This paper …

Robust And Efficient Ebg-Backed Wearable Antenna For Ism Applications, Ayesha Saeed, Asma Ejaz, Humayun Shahid, Yasar Amin, Hannu Tenhunen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A structurally compact, semiflexible wearable antenna composed of a distinctively miniaturized electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure is presented in this work. Designed for body-centric applications in the 5.8 GHz band, the design draws heavily from a novel planar geometry realized on Rogers RT/duroid 5880 laminate with a compact physical footprint spanning lateral dimensions of $0.6$$\lambda$$_0$$\times$$0.06$$\lambda$$_0$. Incorporating a 2$\times$2 EBG structure at the rear of the proposed design ensures sufficient isolation between the body and the antenna, doing away with the performance degradation associated with high permittivity of the tissue layer. The peculiar antenna geometry allows for reduced backward radiation and …

Deep learning techniques help agronomists efficiently identify, analyze, and monitor tomato health. CNN (convolutional neural network) locality constraint and existing small train sample adversely influenced disease recognition performance. To alleviate these challenges, we proposed a discriminative feature learning attention augmented residual (AAR) network. The AAR network contains a stacked pre-activated residual block that learns deep coarse level features with locality context, whereas the attention block captures salient feature sets while maintaining the global relationship in data points, attention features augment the learning of the residual block. We used conditional variational generative adversarial network (CVGAN) image reconstruction network and augmentation techniques …

Modeling Of Rare Earth Solvent Extraction Process For Flowsheet Design And Optimization, Vaibhav Kumar Srivastava
Theses and Dissertations--Mining Engineering
The separation and purification of rare earth elements (REEs) into individual products has been a topic of significant interest for researchers and engineers for many decades. The prime reason for such sustained interest is due to REEs’ demand and application in modern technology, as well as the challenges associated with their separation and purification. The chemical similarity of rare earth group elements is responsible for difficult separability which makes purification of individual elements challenging. Despite associated complications, processes such as solvent extraction (SX) and ion-exchange have been successfully utilized in the separation and production of REEs on pilot and commercial …
Understanding The Behavior Of Ionic Liquids In Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) Through Molecular Dynamics, Alejandro Gallegos Tovar
Understanding The Behavior Of Ionic Liquids In Poly (Methyl Methacrylate) Through Molecular Dynamics, Alejandro Gallegos Tovar
Honors Theses
Ionogels are polymer networks swollen by ionic liquids (ILs). They are used for electrochemical devices (lithium-ion batteries, thin-film transistors, and fuel cells) and as permeation membranes for gas separation. The interactions and phase behaviors of an ionic liquid (IL) in a polymer are the most important factor when building ionogels. The molecular behavior between poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium with four different anionic structures has been studied. The behavior between ILs and polymers is governed by a complex mix of factors such as polymer concentration, polymer and IL hydrophobicity, inter and intramolecular forces, and temperature. Molecular simulations of different …
