The Effect Of Freespace Properties On Unilateral Stiffness Classification, Emma Treadway, Kristian Journet Jan 2021

The Effect Of Freespace Properties On Unilateral Stiffness Classification, Emma Treadway, Kristian Journet

Engineering Faculty Research

Virtual environments rendered through kinesthetic haptic devices have frequency-dependent dynamic properties that affect perception. Previous studies on the perception of virtual walls have suggested that the properties not only of the wall, but also of the freespace with which it is paired, influence the perceived wall stiffness (bias) and discrimination thresholds. In this work, two experiments were undertaken to examine the effect of mass and damping properties in freespace on virtual wall stiffness classification. The results suggest that there may be alterations to classification performance under large changes in freespace conditions, but that small changes in mass and damping …

Influence Of Ecm Composition And Intracellular Calcium On Endothelial Biomechanics And Prediction Of Cellular Stresses Using Machine Learning, Vignesh Aravind Subramanian Balachandar Jan 2021

Influence Of Ecm Composition And Intracellular Calcium On Endothelial Biomechanics And Prediction Of Cellular Stresses Using Machine Learning, Vignesh Aravind Subramanian Balachandar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Endothelial cells, which form the inner layer of the vasculature, constantly interact with their external microenvironment called the extracellular matrix (ECM) by exerting contractile cell-substrate stresses called tractions and cell-cell stresses called intercellular stresses. This cellular mechanosensing can become aberrant and act as a precursor for many vascular pathological and physiological processes such as cancer metastasis, atherosclerosis, cell differentiation, migration, and morphogenesis. Also, intracellular calcium signalling plays an important role in endothelial cell motility and in maintaining vascular tone. Alteration in ECM composition has been linked to several pathologies, in fact, a transition to a fibronectin-rich matrix from a type …

Diffusion Biomarkers To Characterize Tissue Microstructure In Chronic Myocardial Infarction, Mohammad Tanjib Rahman Jan 2021

Diffusion Biomarkers To Characterize Tissue Microstructure In Chronic Myocardial Infarction, Mohammad Tanjib Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Non-invasive imaging techniques to detect and characterize infarcted myocardium are critical for myocardial infarction (MI) prognosis and post-MI risk assessment. Many existing imaging techniques (such as T1-mapping) for MI detection require the use of contrast agents, which are not recommended for patients with renal failure. Cardiac diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (cDTI), a non-contrast imaging technique, allows estimating the aggregate cardiomyocyte microstructure in healthy subjects and its remodeling as a result of cardiac diseases. Two main questions are investigated in this thesis: 1) how cDTI based biomarkers can characterize microstructural changes occurring post-MI; and 2) if cDTI based biomarkers can …

Optimization Of A Wing Supporting A Coaxial Rotor For Multiple Flight Conditions, Tadd Yeager Jan 2021

Optimization Of A Wing Supporting A Coaxial Rotor For Multiple Flight Conditions, Tadd Yeager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Rotor-powered drones continue to grow in popularity in private and government sectors. The use of these drones in challenging environments and in high stakes applications calls for a certain level of robustness and redundancy. Often, these drones are equipped with sets of paired coaxial rotors, which not only improve the performance of the vehicle, but also ensure that a failure of one motor does not constitute the failure of the whole vehicle. Some applications such as extraterrestrial exploration, which use these coaxial rotors, can benefit from a wing shaped rotor arm to reduce drag and increase lift, extending mission lifetime. …

A Framework For Mitigating Obsolescence In Military Based Systems, Ryan Rust Jan 2021

A Framework For Mitigating Obsolescence In Military Based Systems, Ryan Rust

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Obsolescence is an unavoidable reality in manufacturing systems and supply chain environments as systems are needed to be sustained for longer and longer periods of time. These extended life cycle products include airplanes, ships, industrial equipment, medical equipment, and military systems. The United States military has coined this issue as Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS). Research shows that the main areas of concern for obsolescence are cost optimization, obsolescence management, system life cycle, design/system refresh planning, architecture/open systems, and end-of-life (EOL) predictions. This effort suggests a need for a more effective management approach to tackling obsolescence with an …

Eeg-Based Signatures Of Isometric Arm Forces By Females At Different Levels Of Physical Exertion And Comfort, Mahjabeen Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

In recent years, electroencephalography (EEG) has become a valuable technique for ergonomics studies of physical activities and other real-life tasks. Since the perception of force exertion is influenced by various psychophysical, cognitive, and social factors, different subjective measures have been traditionally used to measure the perception of physical exertion and related body discomfort. Along with the subjective measures, research showed that neural signals are also necessary objective measures to understanding human perception of physical tasks. However, EEG signatures of different physical exertion levels and perceived physical comfort have not been explored. The main objective of this study was to investigate …

Damping And Ejection Of Sloshing Liquid Drops From Elastic Substrates, Md Erfanul Alam Jan 2021

Damping And Ejection Of Sloshing Liquid Drops From Elastic Substrates, Md Erfanul Alam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Liquid slosh is a potential source of disturbance of the motion of a moving structure. In this thesis, we probe the damping technique of sessile drop by absorbing a portion of the kinetic energy. The sloshing dynamics are typically represented by a mechanical model of a spring mass damper. However, damping by drop sloshing is dependent on viscosity, surface tension, drop size and drop location. We explore highly-coupled fluid-solid mechanics using singular liquid drop with varying viscosity and surface tension resting on a millimetric cantilever. Cantilevers are displaced 0.6 mm and their free end is allowed to vibrate freely. Cantilever …

Are We In The Digital Dark Times? How The Philosophy Of Hannah Arendt Can Illuminate Some Of The Ethical Dilemmas Posed By Modern Digital Technologies, Damian Gordon, Anna Becevel

Conference Papers

Philosophers are not generally credited with being clairvoyant, and yet because they recognise, record and reflect on trends in their society, their observations can often appear prescient. In the field of the ethics of technology, there is, perhaps, no philosopher whose perspective on these issues is worth examining in detail more than that of Hannah Arendt, who can offer real perspective on the challenges we are facing with technologies in the twenty-first century. Arendt, a thinker of Jewish-German origin, student of Martin Heidegger and Karl Jaspers, encountered her life turning point when she was forced into becoming a refugee as …

Following the road paradigm, many cities, at the beginning of the 20th century, experienced a reckless increase in the number of vehicles on the road causing an unsustainable urban and environmental situation. The origin of the problem surely lies in the occupation of the preserved areas. In many South American states, for example, highways generally ignore the presence of environmental obstacles (such as rivers) as they may cause a “delay in modernization”. As a result, riparian forests are invaded and turned into highways, water beds are channeled and most rivers are contaminated with wastewater. Due to the occupation of green …

The mechanisms that underlie the extensive phenotypic diversity in genetic disorders are poorly understood. Here, we develop a large-scale assay to characterize the functional valence (gain or loss-of-function) of missense variants identified in UBE3A, the gene whose loss-of-function causes the neurodevelopmental disorder Angelman syndrome. We identify numerous gain-of-function variants including a hyperactivating Q588E mutation that strikingly increases UBE3A activity above wild-type UBE3A levels. Mice carrying the Q588E mutation exhibit aberrant early-life motor and communication deficits, and individuals possessing hyperactivating UBE3A variants exhibit affected phenotypes that are distinguishable from Angelman syndrome. Additional structure-function analysis reveals that Q588 forms a regulatory site …

Measuring protein-protein interaction (PPI) affinities is fundamental to biochemistry. Yet, conventional methods rely upon the law of mass action and cannot measure many PPIs due to a scarcity of reagents and limitations in the measurable affinity ranges. Here, we present a novel technique that leverages the fundamental concept of friction to produce a mechanical signal that correlates to binding potential. The mechanically transduced immunosorbent (METRIS) assay utilizes rolling magnetic probes to measure PPI interaction affinities. METRIS measures the translational displacement of protein-coated particles on a protein-functionalized substrate. The translational displacement scales with the effective friction induced by a PPI, thus …

Object classification using late-time resonant scattering electromagnetic signals is a significant problem found in different areas of application. Due to their unique properties, spherical objects play an essential role in this field both as a challenging target and a resource of analytical late-time resonant scattering electromagnetic signals. Although many studies focus on their detailed analysis, the challenges associated with target classification by resonant late-time resonant scattering electromagnetic signals from multilayer spheres have not been investigated in detail. Moreover, existing studies made the simplifying assumption that the objects having (one or more) layers constitute equal permeability values at the core and …

This paper studies the effect of dynamic demand response (DR) control on stability delay margins of load frequency control (LFC) systems including communication time-delays. A DR control loop is included in each control area, called as LFC-DR system and Rekasius substitution is utilized to identify stability margins for various proportionalintegral (PI) gains and participation ratios of the secondary and DR control loops. The purpose of Rekasius substitution technique is to obtain purely complex roots on the imaginary axis of the time-delayed LFC-DR system. This substitution first converts the characteristic equation of the LFC-DR system including delay-dependent exponential terms into an …

An Improved Version Of Multi-View K-Nearest Neighbors (Mvknn) For Multipleview Learning, Eli̇fe Öztürk Kiyak, Derya Bi̇rant, Kökten Ulaş Bi̇rant

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Multi-view learning (MVL) is a special type of machine learning that utilizes more than one views, where views include various descriptions of a given sample. Traditionally, classification algorithms such as k-nearest neighbors (KNN) are designed for learning from single-view data. However, many real-world applications involve datasets with multiple views and each view may contain different and partly independent information, which makes the traditional single-view classification approaches ineffective. Therefore, this article proposes an improved MVL algorithm, called multi-view k-nearest neighbors (MVKNN), based on the existing KNN algorithm. The experimental results conducted in this research show that a significant improvement is achieved …
