Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications

Iron-based catalysts are the most suitable candidates for converting CO2 or CO2-rich syngas to hydrocarbons. However, several issues about the mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation are still unclear. In this work, we investigated the performance of an iron-based catalyst with H2/CO2, H2/CO/N2 and H2/CO/13CO2/N2 gas mixtures at the same process conditions (T = 270°C, P = 175 psi and SV = 3 NL/h/gcat). The CO2 hydrogenation rate was much lower than that observed for CO hydrogenation. 13CO2 …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Altimeter measurements are corrected for several geophysical parameters in order to access ocean signals of interest, like mesoscale or sub-mesoscale variability. The ocean tide is one of the most critical corrections due to the amplitude of the tidal elevations and to the aliasing phenomena of high-frequency signals into the lower-frequency band, but the internal-tide signatures at the ocean surface are not yet corrected globally.

Internal tides can have a signature of several centimeters at the surface with wavelengths of about 50–250 km for the first mode and even smaller scales for higher-order modes. The goals of the upcoming Surface Water …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We numerically investigate the dynamics of a pair of circular Janus microparticles immersed in a Newtonian fluid under a simple shear flow and a uniform magnetic field by direct numerical simulation. Using the COMSOL software, we applied the finite element method, based on an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach, and analyzed the dynamics of two anisotropic particles (i.e., one-half is paramagnetic, and the other is non-magnetic) due to the center-to-center distance, magnetic field strength, initial particle orientation, and configuration. This article considers two configurations: the LR-configuration (magnetic material is on the left side of the first particle and on the right side …

Development Of A Hurricane Recovery Function And Resilience Model For Single-Family Residential Homes, Uriel Robert Donald Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The resilience of communities, infrastructure, and the environment in the face of hurricanes has increasingly become of public interest in the wake of recent natural disasters and environmental activism. Previous methodologies have attempted to quantify resilience for various structures and scenarios. Many studies have primarily investigated the robustness of critical infrastructure (e.g., bridges, emergency facilities, and water systems) which are essential to the function of a community. However, few studies have applied this approach to individual residential buildings. Therefore, this research aimed to adapt the most recent recovery functions developed for residential homes by considering measurable factors that are known …

Theses and Dissertations

We propose to expand nanomanufacturing capabilities and develop processing methods to produce advanced nanofiber materials with enhanced macromolecular and functional properties. Over the past decade, there has been a tremendous increase in the demand for polymeric nanofibers, which are promising candidates for a wide range of technological applications, including tissue engineering, protective clothing, filtration/absorption materials, and sensors/electronic devices, batteries/energy harvest, and fiber-reinforced composites [1]. However, the accessibility of nanofiber materials is limited because it is impossible to produce polymer nanofibers using conventional techniques. Typically, conventional polymer fibers are manufactured by mechanical extrusion with a secondary post-drawing step that stretches the …

Computational Study Of Helical And Helix-Hinge-Helix Conformations Of An Anti-Microbial Peptide In Solution By Molecular Dynamics And Vibrational Analysis, Faramarz Joodaki, Lenore M. Martin, Michael L. Greenfield

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Many classical antimicrobial peptides adopt an amphipathic helical structure at a water-membrane interface. Prior studies led to the hypothesis that a hinge near the middle of a helical peptide plays an important role in facilitating peptide-membrane interactions. Here, dynamics and vibrations of a designed hybrid antimicrobial peptide LM7-2 in solution were simulated to investigate its hinge formation.Molecular dynamics simulation results on the basis of the CHARMM36 force field showed that the $\alpha$-helix LM7-2 bent around two or three residues near the middle of the peptide, stayed in a helix-hinge-helix conformation for a short period of time, and then returned to a …

Simulation Research On Abandonment Rate Of Contact Center Based On Patience Threshold, Junxiang Li, Wanbin Zang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Customer abandonment rate is an important indicator to measure the service level of contact center. Customers in a traditional call center follow the principle of first come, first served, but some customers will be lost in the queuing process because of their limited patience. In this regard, by setting the customer's patience threshold and considering adding a specific agent channel to the member customers, or adjusting the number of agent channels under the original staffing, a new contact center queuing model is established based on the traditional call center model. The ProModel simulation software is used to study the …

Abstract: By analyzing the relationship between braking force and speed during the stop-stop process of high-speed EMU(Electric Multiple Units), the multi-point dynamics model of EMU is constructed. The Smith predictor is introduced due to the delay effect on the system caused by the braking force generated during the late braking, and the RBF(Radial Basis Function) neural network-based PID control strategy is combined with the Smith predictor to achieve tracking control of a given speed during braking. Simulation analysis shows that the error of train speed and set speed controlled by RBF neural network PID-Smith controller is less than ±1 …

Using System Dynamics To Study The Effect Of Change Orders On Labor Productivity, Shrouk Gharib Jan 2021

Using System Dynamics To Study The Effect Of Change Orders On Labor Productivity, Shrouk Gharib

Theses and Dissertations

Change orders in construction projects lead to numerous negative impacts, including loss of labor productivity, delays, and cost overruns. Owners and contractors are usually in disagreement when it comes to allocating the extent of responsibilities with respect to the resulting overruns. Each party tries to hold the other party fully responsible for such overruns through a series of claims and disputes. Several delay analysis techniques have been developed to aid in settling such disputes, however, they do not fully grasp the rippled impacts of change orders and do not assist parties in reaching consensus when it comes to finding the …

Quantification Of Nitric Oxide Concentration Using Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Sensors, Jakob Meier, Joseph Stapleton, Eric M. Hofferber, Abigail Haworth, Stephen D. Kachman, Nicole M. Iverson

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical present in biological systems, can have many detrimental effects on the body, from inflammation to cancer. Due to NO’s short half-life, detection and quantification is difficult. The inability to quantify NO has hindered researchers’ understanding of its impact in healthy and diseased conditions. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), when wrapped in a specific single-stranded DNA chain, becomes selective to NO, creating a fluorescence sensor. Unfortunately, the correlation between NO concentration and the SWNT’s fluorescence intensity has been difficult to determine due to an inability to immobilize the sensor without altering its properties. Through the use …

Research On Sins/Gnss/Train-Speed Integrated Navigation Algorithm, Wang Ke, Ligang Liu, Bin Zhou, Zhiyong Bu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The precise train positioning under complicated railway environment has been a key technical challenge for train navigation currently. In the conventional solutions, in case of satellite signals being weak or indiscernible, the task of positioning has to be undertaken by SINS alone. This will cause some serious error-accumulation problems, especially when low-cost inertial devices are used. In order to solve this problem, we propose a novel integrated train navigation algorithm, which includes two working modes. The SINS/GNSS mode is designed for the situation that satellite signals are valid, whereas the SINS/wheel-speed mode is for the weak signal environments. Both …

A Quantization-Based Integration Method For Stiff Ordinary Differential Equations, Zhihua Li, Jiang De, Chenjia Wu, Zhihua Fan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: QSS(Quantized State System) has advantages over the traditional time-discrete integration methods in solving general ordinary differential equation (ODE) systems, but it is not suitable for solving the stiff ODE systems. To effectively solve the stiff ODE systems, a step-correction optimization algorithm based on QSS (SCOA based-on QSS) is proposed, which combines the ideas of the QSS method and the implicit trapezoidal integral method. The simulation results of three typical stiff ODE cases show that the SCOA based-on QSS algorithm has advantages over other algorithms, and the simulation accuracy can be significantly improved by appropriately reducing the quantum size.
