Anisotropic Dielectric Functions, Band-To-Band Transitions, And Critical Points In Α-Ga2O3, Matthew J. Hilfiker, Rafal Korlacki, Riena Jinno, Yongjin Cho, Huili Grace Xing, Debdeep Jena, Ufuk Kilic, Megan Stokey, Mathias Schubert

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We use a combined generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry and density functional theory approach to determine and analyze the anisotropic dielectric functions of an α-Ga2O3 thin film. The sample is grown epitaxially by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on m-plane sapphire. Generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry data from multiple sample azimuths in the spectral range from 0.73 eV to 8.75 eV are simultaneously analyzed. Density functional theory is used to calculate the valence and conduction band structure. We identify, for the indirect-bandgap material, two direct band-to-band transitions with M0-type van Hove singularities for polarization perpendicular to the c axis, …

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Mg-Y based alloys exhibit a promising combination of strength and deformability through tuning precipitation and solute strengthening mechanisms and tailoring the activity of non-basal dislocations. Understanding the precipitation sequence of Mg-Y based alloys and its dependence on Yttrium concentration in the matrix will provide a guideline for fine tuning structure, morphology and distribution of precipitates in Mg-Y based alloys. In this paper, we explore the precipitation behaviors of Mg-11Y (wt%) and Mg-11Y-1Al (wt%) alloys using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, and rationalize the experimental observations based on first-principles density functional theory calculations. The precipitation sequence during ageing at 225 °C …

Quantifying Materials Waste In The Egyptian Construction Industry: A Critical Analysis Of Rates And Factors, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Ahmed Osama Daoud Dr., Obas John Ebohon, Ali Bayyati

Architectural Engineering

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is a critical challenge facing the construction industry. It leads to deterioration of the triple bottom line of sustainability. Unfortunately, the CDW management research in Egypt lacks studies investigating (1) the variations in CDW generation (CDWG) among different types of construction projects, and (2) the factors affecting CDW reduction (CDWR). Based on a benchmarking approach, this research (1) quantifies CDW in terms of generation rates and costs among different construction project types in Egypt, and (2) investigates the relationship between CDWG and different adopted CDWR factors. Using structured interviews, a comparative case study was conducted …

The aggregation ability and exciton dynamics of dyes are largely affected by properties of the dye monomers. To facilitate aggregation and improve excitonic function, dyes can be engineered with substituents to exhibit optimal key properties, such as hydrophobicity, static dipole moment differences, and transition dipole moments. To determine how electron donating (D) and electron withdrawing (W) substituents impact the solvation, static dipole moments, and transition dipole moments of the pentamethine indocyanine dye Cy5, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD-) DFT calculations were performed. The inclusion of substituents had large effects on the solvation energy of Cy5, with pairs of …

Centrifugally Spun Tio2/C Composite Fibers Prepared From Tis2/Pan Precursor Fibers As Binder-Free Anodes For Libs, Jorge Lopez, Ramiro Gonzalez, Jonathan Ayala, Jesus Cantu, Alexandria Castillo, Jason Parsons, Timothy P. Lodge, Mataz Alcoutlabi Feb 2021

Centrifugally Spun Tio2/C Composite Fibers Prepared From Tis2/Pan Precursor Fibers As Binder-Free Anodes For Libs, Jorge Lopez, Ramiro Gonzalez, Jonathan Ayala, Jesus Cantu, Alexandria Castillo, Jason Parsons, Timothy P. Lodge, Mataz Alcoutlabi

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

TiO2/carbon composite-fiber anodes for lithium ion batteries were prepared through the centrifugal spinning of TiS2/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor fibers and subsequent thermal treatment. The TiS2/PAN precursor solutions were prepared by mixing TiS2 nanoparticles (a 2-D layered structure) with PAN in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The thermal treatment of the TiS2 in the centrifugally spun PAN fibers resulted in TiO2/carbon composite fibers. The structure of TiO2 nanoparticles embedded in the carbon-fiber matrix synthesized from the TiS2 starting material may accommodate high amounts of Li ions. The TiO2/C structure may lead to increased specific capacity, improved stability, and enhanced electrochemical performance of the TiO2/C …

Statistical Analysis And Comparison Of Optical Classification Of Atmospheric Aerosol Lidar Data, Mohammed Alqawba, Norou Diawara, Kwasi G. Afrifa, Mohamed I. Elbakary, Mecit Cetin, Khan Iftekharuddin

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this article, we present a new study for the analysis and classification of atmospheric aerosols in remote sensing LIDAR data. Information on particle size and associated properties are extracted from these remote sensing atmospheric data which are collected by a ground-based LIDAR system. This study first considers optical LIDAR parameter-based classification methods for clustering and classification of different types of harmful aerosol particles in the atmosphere. Since accurate methods for aerosol prediction behaviors are based upon observed data, computational approaches must overcome design limitations, and consider appropriate calibration and estimation accuracy. Consequently, two statistical methods based on generalized linear …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The complexity and dynamism of microservice systems pose unique challenges to a variety of software engineering tasks such as fault analysis and debugging. In spite of the prevalence and importance of microservices in industry, there is limited research on the fault analysis and debugging of microservice systems. To fill this gap, we conduct an industrial survey to learn typical faults of microservice systems, current practice of debugging, and the challenges faced by developers in practice. We then develop a medium-size benchmark microservice system (being the largest and most complex open source microservice system within our knowledge) and replicate 22 industrial …

Effects Of Alloy Composition And Solid-State Diffusion Kinetics On Powder Bed Fusion Cracking Susceptibility, Holden Hyer, Le Zhou, Abhishek Mehta, Yongho Sohn

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has demonstrated its unique ability to produce customized, complex engineering components. However, processing of many commercial Al-alloys by LPBF remains challenging due to the formation of solidification cracking, although they are labelled castable or weldable. In order to elucidate this divergence, solidification cracking susceptibility from the steepness of the solidification curves, specifically |dT⁄dfs1⁄2|, as the fraction solidified nears 1 towards complete solidification, was calculated via Scheil–Gulliver model as a function of solute concentration in simple binary Al-Si, Al-Mg, and Al-Cu systems. Introduction of “diffusion in solid” into Scheil–Gulliver model resulted in a …

A Single-Stage Passive Vibration Isolation System For Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Toan T. Le Feb 2021

A Single-Stage Passive Vibration Isolation System For Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Toan T. Le

Master's Theses

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) uses quantum tunneling effect to study the surfaces of materials on an atomic scale. Since the probe of the microscope is on the order of nanometers away from the surface, the device is prone to noises due to vibrations from the surroundings. To minimize the random noises and floor vibrations, passive vibration isolation is a commonly used technique due to its low cost and simpler design compared to active vibration isolation, especially when the entire vibration isolation system (VIS) stays inside an Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) environment. This research aims to analyze and build a single-stage …

The Role Of Bed-Penetrating Kelvin–Helmholtz Vortices On Local And Instantaneous Bedload Sediment Transport, Liheng Guan, J. S. Salinas, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar Feb 2021

The Role Of Bed-Penetrating Kelvin–Helmholtz Vortices On Local And Instantaneous Bedload Sediment Transport, Liheng Guan, J. S. Salinas, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present results from open-channel, Euler–Lagrange (EL) simulations of turbulent flow over an erodible particle bed at a shear Reynolds number of Reτ=180 . Upon space and time averaging, our simulations correctly reproduce the Wong & Parker (ASCE J. Hydraul. Engng, vol. 132, issue 11, 2006, pp. 1159–1168) bedload transport relation (WP). However, local and instantaneous sediment flux shows orders of magnitude scatter around the WP prediction. Visualization of the vortical structures using swirling strength shows the existence of bed-penetrating Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) vortex packets, which coupled with particle inertia are primarily responsible for the large scatter. The results also show …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A laser beam oscillation method using Galvano mirrors, which allows wide weld beads and controls thermal stress distribution, was suggested to suppress the formation of solidification cracks in laser welds. In order to understand the solidification cracking behavior in relation to the bead shape, laser beam oscillation welding was performed under various oscillation widths and frequency conditions. To evaluate the effect of the oscillation parameter on solidification cracking susceptibility, a regression analysis based on the shape of the bead was performed. Stress distribution generated during the laser beam oscillation welding process was also analyzed using finite element modeling simulation. From …

Quantifying The Impact Of Uncertainty In Embedded Systems Mapping For Noc Based Architectures, Wenkai Guan, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam, Cristinel Ababei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We describe a modeling framework to capture and account for uncertainty in design parameters in embedded systems. We then develop an uncertainty-aware solution to the problem of mapping in embedded systems that uses Network-on-Chip (NoC) based architecture platforms. The problem of mapping is formulated as a multi-objective - reliability, performance, and energy consumption - optimization problem. To solve this problem, we propose a solution based on the NSGA-II genetic algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The solution is implemented as a computer-aid design tool that can generate robust 3D Pareto frontiers in the solution space formed by the design objectives …

Enhancing Reproductive Organ Segmentation In Pediatric Ct Via Adversarial Learning, Chi Nok Enoch Kan, Taly Gilat-Schmidt, Dong Hye Ye

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Accurately segmenting organs in abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans is crucial for clinical applications such as pre-operative planning and dose estimation. With the recent advent of deep learning algorithms, many robust frameworks have been proposed for organ segmentation in abdominal CT images. However, many of these frameworks require large amounts of training data in order to achieve high segmentation accuracy. Pediatric abdominal CT images containing reproductive organs are particularly hard to obtain since these organs are extremely sensitive to ionizing radiation. Hence, it is extremely challenging to train automatic segmentation algorithms on organs such as the uterus and the prostate. …

Entropy Based Features Distribution For Anti-Ddos Model In Sdn, Raja Majid Ali Ujjan, Zeeshan Pervez, Keshav Dahal, Wajahat Ali Khan, Asad Masood Khattak, Bashir Hayat

All Works

In modern network infrastructure, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are considered as severe network security threats. For conventional network security tools it is extremely difficult to distinguish between the higher traffic volume of a DDoS attack and large number of legitimate users accessing a targeted network service or a resource. Although these attacks have been widely studied, there are few works which collect and analyse truly representative characteristics of DDoS traffic. The current research mostly focuses on DDoS detection and mitigation with predefined DDoS data-sets which are often hard to generalise for various network services and legitimate users’ traffic …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is now a profitable method to decarbonize the grid, but if catastrophic climate change is to be avoided, emissions from transportation and heating must also decarbonize. One approach to renewable heating is leveraging improvements in PV with heat pumps (HPs). To determine the potential for PV+HP systems in northern areas of North America, this study performs numerical simulations and economic analysis using the same loads and climate, but with local electricity and natural gas rates for Sault Ste. Marie, in both Canada and U.S. Ground-mounted, fixed-tilt, grid-tied PV systems are sized to match 100% of electric …

Structural Identification And Damage Detection In Bridges Using Wave Method And Uniform Shear Beam Models: A Feasibility Study, Mehran Rahmani, Manan Naik

Mineta Transportation Institute

This report presents a wave method to be used for the structural identification and damage detection of structural components in bridges, e.g., bridge piers. This method has proven to be promising when applied to real structures and large amplitude responses in buildings (e.g., mid-rise and high-rise buildings). This study is the first application of the method to damaged bridge structures. The bridge identification was performed using wave propagation in a simple uniform shear beam model. The method identifies a wave velocity for the structure by fitting an equivalent uniform shear beam model to the impulse response functions of the recorded …

Global climate change is a clear and present danger to our environment, but the impacts of climate change on human health are less known. People in Asian countries are more susceptible to the negative impacts of climate change and the subsequent environmental exposures because of the high population density, rapid urbanization, and natural geography of the region. The objective of this multidisciplinary collaborative ecological study was to explore the impact of environmental exposures such as temperature (°C), noise (db), humidity (%rh), air conditioning exposure time (hours), and distance traveled to school (km) on the comfort and academic success of school …

Modeling The Effectiveness Of Cooling Trenches For Stormwater Temperature Mitigation, Scott A. Wells Jan 2021

Modeling The Effectiveness Of Cooling Trenches For Stormwater Temperature Mitigation, Scott A. Wells

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Due to elevated runoff stormwater temperatures from impervious areas, one management strategy to reduce stormwater temperature is the use of underground flow through rock media termed a cooling trench. This paper examines the governing equations for the liquid phase and media phases for modeling the temperature leaving a cooling trench assuming that changes in temperature occurred longitudinally through the cooling trench. This model is dependent on parameters such as the media type, porosity, media initial temperature, inflow rate, and inflow temperature. Several approaches were explored mathematically for evaluating the change in temperature of the water and the cooling trench media. …

Effect Of Membrane Properties On The Carbonation Of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Yiwei Zheng, Lyzmarie Nicole Irizarry, Noor Ui Hassan, Eric R. Williams, Morgan Stefik, Jacob M. Lamanna, Daniel S. Hussey, Mustain E William Jan 2021

Effect Of Membrane Properties On The Carbonation Of Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Yiwei Zheng, Lyzmarie Nicole Irizarry, Noor Ui Hassan, Eric R. Williams, Morgan Stefik, Jacob M. Lamanna, Daniel S. Hussey, Mustain E William

Faculty Publications

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) are potentially very low-cost replacements for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, AEMFCs suffer from one very serious drawback: significant performance loss when CO2 is present in the reacting oxidant gas (e.g., air) due to carbonation. Although the chemical mechanisms for how carbonation leads to voltage loss in operating AEMFCs are known, the way those mechanisms are affected by the properties of the anion exchange membrane (AEM) has not been elucidated. Therefore, this work studies AEMFC carbonation using numerous high-functioning AEMs from the literature and it was found that the ionic conductivity of the …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Access Schemes In Cognitive Radio Networks, Ehab Maged Elguindy Jan 2021

Reinforcement Learning-Based Access Schemes In Cognitive Radio Networks, Ehab Maged Elguindy

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we propose different MAC protocols based on three Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches, namely Q-Learning, Deep Q-Network (DQN), and Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG). We exploit the primary user (PU) feedback, in the form of ARQ and CQI bits, to enhance the performance of the secondary user (SU) MAC protocols. Exploiting the PU feedback information can be applied on the top of any SU sensing-based MAC protocol. Our proposed model relies on two main pillars, namely, an infinite-state Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) to model the system dynamics besides a queuing-theoretic model for the PU queue; the …

Multi-Skilled Labor Optimization With Partial Allocation Of Resources, Amira Saleh Jan 2021

Multi-Skilled Labor Optimization With Partial Allocation Of Resources, Amira Saleh

Theses and Dissertations

The current practice of labor allocation in construction schedules assumes single-skilled workforce; meaning that each worker is assumed to be skilled in only one trade. In such practice, at any instance in the project lifecycle, some of the workforce become idle waiting for other labor types to complete their work. Traditionally, companies may relocate idle workers to other projects and return them back to their original project when needed again. This complicates the resource management process and is not often performed successfully, leading to schedule and cost overruns. Alternatively, project managers may keep the idle workforce at their projects because …

Phase Locked Loop Using Vlsi Technology: A Bibliometric Survey And Future Research Directions, Ujwala Kshirsagar, Ayushi Kamboj Ms.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

: For the design of high frequency networks power has been one of the most significant specifications. Power usage is therefore one of the most significant challenges to microprocessor design. If we lower the supply voltage, this immediately leads to a decrease in static and dynamic power usage in order to reduce the circuit's power dissipation. Decreasing the voltage of the supply, however, often decreases the circuit's output, which is not reasonable.

The low power proposed phase locked loop (PLL) is therefore built using microwind 3.1, 45nm CMOS/VLSI technology, which, in practice, at low power, delivers high intensity output. The …
