Foot Temperature Before And After Walking In Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease, Jose Anguiano-Hernandez
Foot Temperature Before And After Walking In Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease, Jose Anguiano-Hernandez
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a pathology that can decrease blood flow to the lower limbs, resulting in the inability to regulate body temperature [1]. The effects of impaired blood flow caused by PAD on body temperature are unclear. The purpose of this study is to compare foot temperature changes before and after walking in healthy people and in patients with PAD. We hypothesize that 1) feet affected by PAD will experience a greater increase in temperature than healthy feet during walking and 2) feet affected by PAD will experience a slower rate of temperature recovery after walking compared …

Modeling Spatial Asymmetry In Visuomotor Coordination, Kolby Brink, Aaron Likens, Nikolaos Stergiou
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Coordination is foundational to human movement. One prominent model of coordination is the Haken-Kelso-Bunz which predicts change in relative phase between two oscillators during movement. Use of this model has shown that the body has a natural tendency to prefer certain coordination patterns over others. The generalizability of the model has sparked its use throughout the scientific community to observe movement through the lens of dynamical systems theory. We contend that this model can be advanced further through incorporation of visually perceived spatial asymmetries, a component not currently accounted for by the model. That is, we sought to find if …

Heterogeneous Resources Cost-Aware Geo-Distributed Data Analytics, Minmin Zhang
Heterogeneous Resources Cost-Aware Geo-Distributed Data Analytics, Minmin Zhang
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Many popular cloud service providers deploy tens of data centers (DCs) around the world to reduce user-perceived latency for better user experiences, in which a large amount of data is generated and stored in a geo-distributed manner. Geo-distributed Data Analytics (GDA) has gained great popularity in meeting the growing demand to mine meaningful and timely knowledge from such highly dispersed data. Since GDA systems require a large data migration between DCs via a wide area network (WAN), many existing works invested significant effort to optimize data transfer strategies to efficiently use limited WAN by considering the network pricing policies on …

Design And Development Of A Semi-Rigid Hip Exoskeleton To Reduce Metabolic Cost, Arash Mohammadzadeh Gonabadi, Prokopios Antonellis, Sara Myers, Iraklis Pipinos, Philippe Malcolm
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Robotic exoskeletons can reduce metabolic cost in healthy individuals and restore mobility in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD is a cardiovascular disease produced by atherosclerosis of the leg arteries. The primary symptom of PAD is claudication or pain in the legs during walking, which severely shortens the distance a patient can walk. Knowing that up to 40% of the metabolic cost of walking comes from the hip muscles, different groups have been developing rigid exoskeletons and soft exosuits that assist the hip. Assisting at the hip has the advantage that the exoskeleton mass is positioned close to the …
The Effect Of Walking Speed And Magnitude Of Perturbation On Compensatory Responses, Farahnaz Fallah Tafti, Jenna Yentes
The Effect Of Walking Speed And Magnitude Of Perturbation On Compensatory Responses, Farahnaz Fallah Tafti, Jenna Yentes
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Imposing a perturbation can induce an unstable condition during gait. Measuring the compensatory responses may be an accurate indicator of the ability to control stability. Responses to a perturbation can be quantified through the perturbed walking pattern deviations from an unperturbed condition. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of perturbation magnitude or speed of walking on compensatory responses to lateral perturbations during walking. Twenty healthy young participants recruited to this study and they were perturbed with the medium magnitude of perturbation, while walking on the treadmill at three different speeds (slow, preferred, and fast). They also …
Led-Based Optical Sensing Platforms For Multi-Analyte Detection, Youngho Shin
Led-Based Optical Sensing Platforms For Multi-Analyte Detection, Youngho Shin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Real-time monitoring of phytoplankton groups provides important information about aquatic ecological states, nutrient abundance, and water pollution. A rapid and accurate method for monitoring phytoplankton in water is commonly performed by detecting fluorescence emission from the plankton; however, commercially available portable fluorescence sensors are still expensive, bulky, and limited in functions, such as lacking the capability of selectively detecting multiple phytoplankton groups. In this regard, a low-cost and portable fluorometer platform for phytoplankton detection was developed in order to address the issues that current portable fluorometers have.
This dissertation has four main goals: (1) perform a study on fluorescence measurement …

Quantitative Pcr Of Small Nucleic Acids: Size Matters, Jay Min Lim, Rahul Tevatia, Ravi Saraf
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
Quantitative dysregulation in small nucleic acids (NA), such as microRNA (miRNA), extracted from minimally invasive biopsies, such as, blood, stool, urine, nose, throat, are promising biomarker for diseases diagnosis and management. We quantify the effect of the extra step of poly(A) ligation for cDNA synthesis and small size of the NA on the limit of quantification (LOQ) of quantitative PCR (qPCR), the gold standard to measure copy number. It was discovered that for small NA, the cycle threshold, Ct that is proportional to −log[c], where [c] is the concentration of the target NA exhibits a sharp transition. The results indicate …

Origin Of Magnetism In Γ-Fesi 2 /Si(111) Nanostructures, Liwei D. Geng, Sahil Dhoka, Ilan Goldfarb, Ranjit Pati, Yongmei M. Jin
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Magnetism has recently been observed in nominally nonmagnetic iron disilicide in the form of epitaxial γ-FeSi2 nanostructures on Si(111) substrate. To explore the origin of the magnetism in γ-FeSi2/Si(111) nanostructures, we performed a systematic first-principles study based on density functional theory. Several possible factors, such as epitaxial strain, free surface, interface, and edge, were examined. The calculations show that among these factors, only the edge can lead to the magnetism in γ-FeSi2/Si(111) nanostructures. It is shown that magnetism exhibits a strong dependency on the local atomic structure of the edge. Furthermore, magnetism can be enhanced by creating multiple-step edges. In …

Plastics have been used in almost every household appliance and various industrial applications for more than one hundred years. Plastic is among the most used materials in manufacturing worldwide. Plastic is cheap, light, durable, flexible, non-toxic, etc., and these properties make it suitable to use in manufacturing many types of appliances and materials. There has been an excessive reliance on plastic, leading to mass production. Despite being overly produced, there has been very little effort to recycle plastic, leading to massive accumulation of this environment. Plastic wastes are found in large patches in the world's oceans, waterways, and land. In …
Non-Newtonian Model Development For Post-Wildfire Flood Risk Management, Ian Eli Floyd
Non-Newtonian Model Development For Post-Wildfire Flood Risk Management, Ian Eli Floyd
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Wildfire effected regions of the western U.S. frequently produce non-Newtonian floods (or floods that have a non-linear relationship between stress and deformation) in response to moderate to severe precipitation events. This research presents the development, evaluation, and demonstration of a post-wildfire hydrodynamic one-dimensional and two-dimensional diffusive wave and shallow-water numerical modeling approach that can be used to predict post-wildfire downstream runout of debris flows and floodplain inundation conditions. While researchers have developed a variety of Non-Newtonian approaches to simulate debris flows and mudflows, there has been very limited application to post-wildfire flooding. This can make it difficult to understand the …

Blast-Induced Noise Level Prediction Model Based On Brain Inspired Emotional Neural Network, Victor Amoako Temeng, Yao Yevenyo Ziggah, Clement Kweku Arthur
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Although a major portion of the emitted energy from mine blast is sub-audible (lower frequency), there exist a component that is audible (high frequencies from 20 Hz to 20 KHz) and as such within the range of human hearing as noise. Unlike blast air overpressure (low frequency occurrence), noise prediction from mine blasting has received little scholarly attention in mining sciences. Noise from mine blast is considered a major detrimental blasting effect and can be a menace to nearby residents and workers in the mine. In this paper, a blast-induced noise level prediction model based on Brain Inspired Emotional Neural …

The Influence Of Pressure Drop On Gas Emissions From A Mining Shaft – An Overview, Paweł Wrona, Zenon Różański, Grzegorz Pach, Adam Niewiadomski, Tomasz Suponik
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Climate change can make an impact on the mining sector and post-mining sites. Among others, extreme weather events are connected with sudden and deep pressure drops which lead to gas emissions from an underground space to the surface through closed shafts. The tests undertaken in the frameworks of TEXMIN project lead to get measuring data of this phenomenon and will allow validating numerical models for further forecasts and mitigation means. Three examples of the results were presented. They showed that the intensity of pressure drop influences strongly on gas emissions from a closed shaft. Although the pressure drop process should …

The use of non-standard modes of heat treatment increases the density of dislocations in the crystal structure of the α-phase and increases the wear resistance of carbon, low-alloy steels under various friction conditions, which is comparable to the results when heated to a standard temperature (Ac3+30÷50 °C). The preliminary extreme heating temperature is determined. After re-quenching at standard temperature and low tempering, the wear resistance of steels under various types of friction increases by up to 40 % compared to standard quenching.

It is becoming increasingly clear that mechanical stress in adhesive junctions plays a significant role in dictating the fate of cell–cell attachment under physiological conditions. Targeted disruption of cell–cell junctions leads to multiple pathological conditions, among them the life-threatening autoimmune blistering disease pemphigus vulgaris (PV). The dissociation of cell–cell junctions by autoantibodies is the hallmark of PV, however, the detailed mechanisms that result in tissue destruction remain unclear. Thus far, research and therapy in PV have focused primarily on immune mechanisms upstream of autoantibody binding, while the biophysical aspects of the cell– cell dissociation process leading to acantholysis are less …

Solid State Synthesis And Characterization Of Apatite Based Ceramic Waste Form For The Immobilization Of Radioactive Iodine, Md Imdadul Islam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The growing demand for nuclear power in the United States and worldwide is accountable for addressing the major concern of radioactive waste, involving the technical challenges of maintaining the nuclear fuel cycle and immobilizing high-level wastes for safe disposal in geological storage. The appropriate selection of waste forms for spent nuclear fuel such as fission products and radionuclides can be effective means for a feasible and sustainable nuclear fuel cycle. But highly volatile radionuclides such as iodine (129) are of specific concern due to its extraordinary long half-life (15.7 million years). Due to its poor solubility and high volatility at …

Operation Procedures Of Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion Model To Reproduce Hydraulics And Sediment Transport, Chase Holston
LSU Master's Theses
The Lower Mississippi River Physical Model (LMRPM) is a distorted, movable bed model that simulates the hydraulics and sediment transport in the lower 195 miles of the Mississippi River. Carved into the model are both existing hydraulic structures, such as the Bonnet Carré Spillway, and proposed structures, such as the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion (MBSD). The MBSD will be the first sediment diversion built as part of Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan, so incorporating the diversion in the LMRPM will be a useful tool to understanding how the diversion can impact the river hydraulics and bedload transport. The objective of this thesis …

Changes In Wetland Soil Processes And Ecosystem Functions Six Years After Marsh Creation In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Erol R. Knaus
LSU Master's Theses
Louisiana contains about 40% of the conterminous United States coastal and estuarine wetlands but also has the highest rates of wetland loss at around 80% of the total. Approximately 4,900 km2 of coastal land in Louisiana has been lost since 1930. Our study location, Barataria Bay, has one of the highest coastal wetland erosion rates in the nation, at ∼41 km2 per year; and therefore, is a high priority for wetland restoration activities. In 2014, sandy sediment dredged from the bed of the Mississippi River was placed in Barataria Bay as part of a restoration effort. Samples were …

A significant and recent development in neural-symbolic learning are deep neural networks that can reason over symbolic knowledge graphs (KGs). A particular task of interest is KG entailment, which is to infer the set of all facts that are a logical consequence of current and potential facts of a KG. Initial neural-symbolic systems that can deduce the entailment of a KG have been presented, but they are limited: current systems learn fact relations and entailment patterns specific to a particular KG and hence do not truly generalize, and must be retrained for each KG they are tasked with entailing. We …
