Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
This project involved designing an upgrade for the grain winnower in Dr. Mueller’s anthropology lab at Washington University in St. Louis. A winnower is a device that separates chaff from usable grain after harvesting and threshing. Many such devices exist, from industrial-scale winnowers sorting high volumes of grain to personal coffee bean winnowers. However, the constraints of the lab space and the specialized nature of the grain being winnowed presented specific constraints. An interview with Dr. Mueller was necessary to determine a ranked list of needs for use in the final product. After creating these rankings, a mock-up was used …

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
Sewing pins are small and hard to handle, and managing the pins can be very distracting (or painful) for a sewist. Our goal was to design a simple and easy sewing pin dispenser for a home sewist that can dispense small headed dressmaker pins. For our design to be a viable product, it would have to dispense pins very quickly, accurately, and safely. Additionally, it has to handle many pins at the same time so it does not have to be reloaded during use. Based on the design of a toothpick dispenser, our prototype small, lightweight, and portable device that …

The goal of this design project was to improve the current method of pill cutting for STL Hills Pharmacy. Pharmacists and other medical professionals cut hundreds of pills weekly. Their current methods can only cut one pill at a time with an error rate of 50%. Pills are often split without enough precision and need to be thrown out. Our project was designed to have a 10% maximum error rate, require 1/4 of the force, and split pills 4 times as fast.

The bridge crane demonstrates dynamics behavior that the flexible mode has a natural frequency depending on the string length. In this project, a portable bridge crane is designed and made to demonstrate this dynamical phenomena by changing speed and string length. The portable bridge crane requires a light mass and a small size. At the same time, because it needs to be observed in a two-dimensional plane, the trolley must be able to move horizontally on a bridge with tracks, and the speed of the trolley needs to be controlled by a speed controllable motor. The crane needs to suspend …

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
The Lake Lab at Washington University in St. Louis faces challenges when setting up their camera systems for experiments. The Three Axis Camera system aims to optimize the experience by automating the movement and creating a user-friendly design. The current set-up requires the camera position to be adjusted manually and is “not liked” by most users. This wastes their time since the lab must set the location for the camera first and if the camera positioning is moved then the experiment will be ruined. Thus, the lab asked us specifically to help them automate these movements with our design and …

The aim of our project is to design and embody an automatic pin dispenser for our customer, Melanie, a recreational sewer. Namely, our pin dispenser design aims to address the need for sewers to safely receive and handle dressmaker pins with one hand whilst working with garments. We have identified three main performance goals for an automatic pins dispenser: Store at least 50 pins at a time, produce at least 1 pin every 2-3 seconds, and present at least 90% of all sorted pins in an upward orientation to the user. These performance goals were identified by interviewing our customer …

Quaternion Codes In Mimo System Of Dual-Polarized Antennas, Sajid Ali, Sara Shakil Qureshi, Syed Ali Hassan
All Works
The use of quaternion orthogonal designs (QODs) to describe point-to-point communication among dual-polarized antennas has the potential to provide higher rate orthogonal and quasi-orthogonal complex designs exploiting polarization diversity among space and time diversities. Furthermore, it is essential to have a space time block code (STBC) which offers a linear and decoupled decoder which quasi-orthogonal designs fail to attain. In this paper, we show how the realm of quaternions unexpectedly offers us a possible solution and codes obtained from quaternion designs mostly achieve both linear and decoupled decoders. This motivated us to perform an indispensable search for QODs such that …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
With the massive amount of data that has been generated in the form of unstructured text documents, Biomedical Named Entity Recognition (BioNER) is becoming increasingly important in the field of biomedical research. Since currently there does not exist any automatic archiving of the obtained results, a lot of this information remains hidden in the textual details and is not easily accessible for further analysis. Hence, text mining methods and natural language processing techniques are used for the extraction of information from such publications.Named entity recognition, is a subtask that comes under information extraction that focuses on finding and categorizing specific …

City Best Practices To Improve Transit Operations And Safety, Michelle Derobertis, Christopher E. Ferrell, Richard W. Lee, David Moore
Mineta Transportation Institute
Public, fixed-route transit services most commonly operate on public streets. In addition, transit passengers must use sidewalks to access transit stops and stations. However, streets and sidewalks are under the jurisdiction of municipalities, not transit agencies. Various municipal policies, practices, and decisions affect transit operations, rider convenience, and passenger safety. Thus, these government entities have an important influence over the quality, safety, and convenience of transit services in their jurisdictions. This research identified municipal policies and practices that affect public transport providers’ ability to deliver transit services. They were found from a comprehensive literature review, interviews and discussions with five …

Dbl: Efficient Reachability Queries On Dynamic Graphs, Qiuyi Lyu, Yuchen Li, Bingsheng He, Bin Gong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Reachability query is a fundamental problem on graphs, which has been extensively studied in academia and industry. Since graphs are subject to frequent updates in many applications, it is essential to support efficient graph updates while offering good performance in reachability queries. Existing solutions compress the original graph with the Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) and propose efficient query processing and index update techniques. However, they focus on optimizing the scenarios where the Strong Connected Components (SCCs) remain unchanged and have overlooked the prohibitively high cost of the DAG maintenance when SCCs are updated. In this paper, we propose DBL, an …

Towards Efficient Motif-Based Graph Partitioning: An Adaptive Sampling Approach, Shixun Huang, Yuchen Li, Zhifeng Bao, Zhao Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we study the problem of efficient motif-based graph partitioning (MGP). We observe that existing methods require to enumerate all motif instances to compute the exact edge weights for partitioning. However, the enumeration is prohibitively expensive against large graphs. We thus propose a sampling-based MGP (SMGP) framework that employs an unbiased sampling mechanism to efficiently estimate the edge weights while trying to preserve the partitioning quality. To further improve the effectiveness, we propose a novel adaptive sampling framework called SMGP+. SMGP+ iteratively partitions the input graph based on up-to-date estimated edge weights, and adaptively adjusts the sampling distribution …

Dycuckoo: Dynamic Hash Tables On Gpus, Yuchen Li, Qiwei Zhu, Zheng Lyu, Zhongdong Huang, Jianling Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The hash table is a fundamental structure that has been implemented on graphics processing units (GPUs) to accelerate a wide range of analytics workloads. Most existing works have focused on static scenarios and occupy large GPU memory to maximize the insertion efficiency. In many cases, data stored in hash tables get updated dynamically, and existing approaches use unnecessarily large memory resources. One naïve solution is to rebuild a hash table (known as rehashing) whenever it is either filled or mostly empty. However, this approach renders significant overheads for rehashing. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic cuckoo hash table …

Newslink: Empowering Intuitive News Search With Knowledge Graphs, Yueji Yang, Yuchen Li, Anthony Tung
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
News search tools help end users to identify relevant news stories. However, existing search approaches often carry out in a "black-box" process. There is little intuition that helps users understand how the results are related to the query. In this paper, we propose a novel news search framework, called NEWSLINK, to empower intuitive news search by using relationship paths discovered from open Knowledge Graphs (KGs). Specifically, NEWSLINK embeds both a query and news documents to subgraphs, called subgraph embeddings, in the KG. Their embeddings' overlap induces relationship paths between the involving entities. Two major advantages are obtained by incorporating subgraph …

Authentication Schemes' Impact On Working Memory, Janine D. Mator
Authentication Schemes' Impact On Working Memory, Janine D. Mator
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Authentication is the process by which a computing system validates a user’s identity. Although this process is necessary for system security, users view authentication as a frequent disruption to their primary tasks. During this disruption, primary task information must be actively maintained in working memory. As a result, primary task information stored in working memory is at risk of being lost or corrupted while users authenticate. For over two decades, researchers have focused on developing more memorable passwords by replacing alphanumeric text with visual graphics (Biddle et al., 2012). However, very little attention has been given to the impact authentication …
