Lecture 08: Partial Eigen Decomposition Of Large Symmetric Matrices Via Thick-Restart Lanczos With Explicit External Deflation And Its Communication-Avoiding Variant, Zhaojun Bai

Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series

There are continual and compelling needs for computing many eigenpairs of very large Hermitian matrix in physical simulations and data analysis. Though the Lanczos method is effective for computing a few eigenvalues, it can be expensive for computing a large number of eigenvalues. To improve the performance of the Lanczos method, in this talk, we will present a combination of explicit external deflation (EED) with an s-step variant of thick-restart Lanczos (s-step TRLan). The s-step Lanczos method can achieve an order of s reduction in data movement while the EED enables to compute eigenpairs in batches along with a number …

Zero-Bias Deep Learning Enabled Quick And Reliable Abnormality Detection In Iot, Yongxin Liu, Jian Wang, Jianqiang Li, Shuteng Niu, Houbing Song

Publications

Abnormality detection is essential to the performance of safety-critical and latency-constrained systems. However, as systems are becoming increasingly complicated with a large quantity of heterogeneous data, conventional statistical change point detection methods are becoming less effective and efficient. Although Deep Learning (DL) and Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are increasingly employed to handle heterogeneous data, they still lack theoretic assurable performance and explainability. This paper integrates zero-bias DNN and Quickest Event Detection algorithms to provide a holistic framework for quick and reliable detection of both abnormalities and time-dependent abnormal events in Internet of Things (IoT).We first use the zero bias dense …

Numerical Modeling Of The Fiber Deposition Flow In Extrusion-Based 3d Bioprinting, Dhanvanth Jaya Talluri

Theses and Dissertations

Extrusion bioprinting involves the deposition of bioinks in a layer-wise fashion to build 3D structures that mimic natural living systems' behavior in tissue engineering. Hydrogels are the most common bioinks, in which their viscosity properties are dependent on the shear-rate, such as Non-Newtonian fluids. Numerical simulation of extrusion bioprinting may help study the flow properties of hydrogels and designing improved bioinks. In this thesis, the instability caused by the shear-thinning or -thickening parameter during extrusion is numerically compared with the theoretical estimations. The process of fiber deposition of hydrogels onto a substrate through the single and coaxial nozzle is done …
