Pd-Based Electrocatalysts For Oxygen Reduction And Ethanol Oxidation Reactions: Some Recent Insights Into Structures And Mechanisms, Zhi-Peng Wu, Chuan-Jian Zhong
Journal of Electrochemistry
The development of efficient electrocatalysts for applications in fuel cells, including proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC), has attracted extensive research attention in recent years. Oxygen reduction reaction and ethanol oxidation reaction are two of the key reactions where the design of active, stable and low-cost electrocatalysts is critical for the mass commercializations of PEMFCs and DEFCs. This challenge stems largely from the limited understanding of the catalyst structures and reaction mechanisms. Progress has been made in investigations of electrocatalysts derived from Pd-based alloy nanomaterials both experimentally and computationally. We highlight herein some of the …

Preparation And Characterization Of "Water-In-Salt" Polymer Electrolyte For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Xu Hou, Xin He, Jie Li
Journal of Electrochemistry
Since the development of wearable and flexible electronic products, the demand of flexible energy storage devices such as batteries and super capacitors is in urgent. To enhance the safety and cycling stability for flexible lithium-ion batteries, “water-in-salt” polymer electrolyte was prepared by introducing 21 mol·kg-1 LiTFSI electrolyte into cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM) after freeze-drying. A great amount of holes with the size range of 10 ~ 20 μm can be found on the surface and in the bulk of polyacrylamide, which is benefited from the freeze-drying process and acts as a great support for the electrolyte uptake. The “water-in-salt” polymer …

Electrochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Studies On Nickel Ultramicroelectrode, Li-Wen Wu, Wei Wang, Yi-Fan Huang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Nickel (Ni) electrodes are widely used in electrochemical researches. Understanding electrochemical processes on Ni electrodes through in-situ characterization of adsorbed species on their surfaces is helpful for rational optimization and application of Ni electrochemistry. Microelectrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (μEC-SERS) combines the mass transfer feature of ultramicroelectrode with high-sensitivity characterizations of molecular structures, which is a powerful method for studying Ni electrochemistry on polarization and non-equilibrium conditions. The key point of performing μEC-SERS is to make a SERS-active Ni ultramicroelectrode.
Here, we demonstrate a method of preparing a SERS-active Ni ultramicroelectrode through electrochemical deposition of several atomic layers of …

Realtime Sensor For Detecting Gallium Infiltration Attack, Peter Holtmann
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
The proposed research is to create a real-time sensor for detecting aluminum degradation due to gallium infiltration attacks, specifically in military vehicles and structures. Gallium acts as a poison to aluminum, leading to catastrophic failures of structural integrity. The proliferation of educational material on this subject raises security concerns for the United States Military, where nearly all structures utilize aluminum due to its high-strength, light-weight profile. Utilizing Fiber-Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors and machine learning techniques, this research aims to develop a real-time sensor to detect these attacks.
Behavioral Science Can Increase Zipper Merge Usage, Maria Galbraith
Behavioral Science Can Increase Zipper Merge Usage, Maria Galbraith
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Research demonstrates that zipper merges (or late merges), under heavy traffic conditions, are safer and faster than a traditional early merge. In implementation, zipper merges can be less efficient due to a lack of compliance on the part of drivers, often more accustomed to early merging. Behavioral science has been applied to a many transportation-related challenges, such as increasing seat belt usage and decreasing drinking and driving but has not yet been applied to the zipper merge. We have identified six relevant behavioral science strategies including (1) social norms, (2) appeals to reason, (3) emotional appeals, (4) humor, (5) memory …
Thermal Modeling Of Li-Ion Batteries Using Sp+3d Model, Derrick Barger
Thermal Modeling Of Li-Ion Batteries Using Sp+3d Model, Derrick Barger
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
An ideal battery model must gather sufficient electrochemical data about the system while remaining being computationally efficient. To prevent failure from thermal runaway, understanding the thermal characteristics of a battery is essential.
To achieve this, we have developed a single particle (SP) model, a simplified but accurate approach to battery modeling, and compared this to a previously designed 3D model. After validating the battery electrochemistry, equations were introduced to calculate the heat generation with a coupled 3D heat transfer component to provide data on the cell temperature. This same model was used to simulate a multi-cell pack.
The results indicate …

A common need among all people is water—we cannot survive without it. And yet, all around the world, achieving a high quality of drinking water is a constant struggle. This water crisis is brought on by many different factors. Some are natural, such as droughts and flooding, but as the effects of climate change continue to reveal themselves, some areas are becoming drier, while other areas are experiencing less predictable and harsher weather patterns.
Our current approach towards water is not sustainable, and we are starting to see that in both under-developed and developed countries alike. Indiscriminate use of water …

This paper investigates the characteristics of a micro-switch that uses two side electrodes to open a normally closed switch. The side electrodes surround the xed electrode in the well-known gap-closing electrode configuration. The side electrodes can open a closed switch and be tuned to respond appropriately to outside forces. The combined electrode system dramatically improves the control of a standard gap-closing electrode configuration. In conventional switches, a DC voltage above a certain value closes the switch. To re-open the switch, the voltage difference is reduced to peel o the moving electrode. Currently the contact area is carefully designed to avoid …

Highly Branched Polymers Based On Poly(Amino Acid)S For Biomedical Application, Marisa Thompson, Carmen Scholz
PRC-Affiliated Research
Polymers consisting of amino acid building blocks continue to receive consideration for biomedical applications. Since poly(amino acid)s are built from natural amino acids, the same building blocks proteins are made of, they are biocompatible, biodegradable and their degradation products are metabolizable. Some amino acids display a unique asymmetrical AB2 structure, which facilitates their ability to form branched structures. This review compares the three forms of highly branched polymeric structures: structurally highly organized dendrimers, dendrigrafts and the less organized, but readily synthesizable hyperbranched polymers. Their syntheses are reviewed and compared, methods of synthesis modulations are considered and variations on their traditional …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Refractory materials hold great promise to develop functional multilayer coating for extreme environments and temperature applications but require high temperature and complex synthesis to overcome their strong atomic bonding and form a multilayer structure. Here, a spontaneous reaction producing sophisticated multilayer refractory carbide coatings on carbon fiber (CF) is reported. This approach utilizes a relatively low-temperature (950 °C) moltensalt process for forming refractory carbides. The reaction of titanium (Ti), chromium (Cr), and CF yields a complex, high-quality multilayer carbide coating composed of 1) Cr carbide (Cr3C2), 2) Ti carbide, and 3) Cr3C2 layers. …
