On Compressional Wave Attenuation In Muddy Marine Sediments, Charles W. Holland, Stan E. Dosso
On Compressional Wave Attenuation In Muddy Marine Sediments, Charles W. Holland, Stan E. Dosso
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A method for measuring in situ compressional wave attenuation exploiting the spectral decay of reflection coefficient Bragg resonances is applied to fine-grained sediments in the New England Mud Patch. Measurements of layer-averaged attenuation in a 10.3 m mud layer yield 0.04 {0.03, 0.055} dB/m/kHz (braces indicate outer bounds); the attenuation is twice as large at a site with 3.2 m mud thickness. It is shown that both results are heavily influenced by a ∼1 m sand-mud transition interval created by geological and biological processes that mix sand (at the base of the mud) into the mud. Informed by the observations, …
Machine Learning Representations For Optimization Of Process Systems, Logan Watts
Machine Learning Representations For Optimization Of Process Systems, Logan Watts
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The optimal operation of chemical processes provides the foundation for optimization problems to determine the most effective way to operate or design a given process. Chemical processes can be represented as nonlinear systems of equations with decision variables, resulting in a problem that can be solved through nonlinear solvers. The downfalls of nonlinear solvers create the need for improved methods of finding globally optimal solutions to the design or operation of a chemical process. The project will seek to evaluate the use of artificial neural networks to approximate nonlinear systems of equations for the purpose of optimizing chemical processes. The …
Peptoid-Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles For Zika Virus Envelope Protein Detection, Meagan Olsen
Peptoid-Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles For Zika Virus Envelope Protein Detection, Meagan Olsen
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Detection and identification of viral pathogens is essential in providing effective and rapid medical treatment. Well-established detection methods can be expensive, slow, and sometimes unable to provide the needed sensitivity and specificity. The Zika virus is one clinically relevant pathogen that cannot be easily identified due to cross-reactivity with other viruses from the same family. Electrochemical sensors enhanced with peptoid-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are an alternative to traditional techniques that offers rapid, accurate, label-free pathogen detection for point-of-care diagnostics. To this end, a peptoid capable of binding to the Zika virus envelope protein was developed and its binding affinity for …

Promotion Of Human Schwann Cell Proliferation Using Heparin/Collagen Coated Nerve Conduits, John Magness
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Often in the aftermath of an injury or surgery, the sense of touch and muscle control is lost in the affected area as nerves are damaged or severed and fail to grow back completely. The regeneration of the nerve cells can be promoted by treating the nerves with nerve conduits. Nerve conduits are hollow cylinders of bio-compatible materials that can be surgically implanted to the disconnected nerve to promote and direct the growth of nerves. The objectives of this research are to investigate the ability of nerve conduits treated with layer-by-layer coatings to promote the growth of Schwann cells, to …

Development Of An Integrated Salt Cartridge-Reverse Electrodialysis (Red) Device To Increase Electrolyte Concentrations Of Human Blood Flow To Power Biomedical Devices, Caroline Campbell
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Emerging technologies in nanotechnology and biomedical sciences have led to an increase in biomedical implantable devices including cardiac pacemakers, artificial organs, drug pumps, and sensors. These devices require continuous stable and reliable power to operate, which creates the demand for the need to find a safe, reliable, and stable power source. A promising avenue for a power source for these devices is a miniaturized reverse electrodialysis (RED) biopower cell design that utilizes the salinity differences between bloodstreams that flow inside the human body. Initial results of the RED system demonstrate that higher gradient salinity differences between streams lead to a …

Analyzing The Effects Of E-Hook Peptides On Kinesin-1, Ashton Ward Murrah, Baylee Hope Howard
Analyzing The Effects Of E-Hook Peptides On Kinesin-1, Ashton Ward Murrah, Baylee Hope Howard
Honors Theses
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Cancerous growth is a result of oncogenes, or mutated genes that increase the rate of cell division in an uncontrolled manner. Cell division, which consists of mitosis and cytokinesis phases, is dependent upon the active movement of kinesin motor proteins along microtubules to rearrange the cytoskeleton for equitable distribution of genetic material to daughter cells. As kinesins are vital to this process, if we could prevent kinesin from binding to the microtubules, cell division would cease.
The goal of this study is to develop a method to prevent …

An Investigation Into Cognitive Radio System Performance, Courtney Hardy, Lucas F. Feather, William S. Guy
Honors Theses
The objective of this thesis is to explore cognitive radio performance through an in-depth literature review and an implementation of a software-defined radio prototyping system. Specifically, this thesis investigates the spectrum-sensing aspect of cognitive radio by comparing two spectrum-sensing methods. It was found in the literature review that a system utilizing matched filter detection would provide higher probability of detection in low signal-to-noise ratio environments when compared to a system utilizing energy detection. These spectrum sensing methods were thus implemented and compared in the cognitive radio systems presented in this thesis. Additionally, experiments were conducted to determine the most efficient …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Oxidative Stress On Molecular Motors, Addison Caspari-Linhardt
Molecular Mechanisms Of Oxidative Stress On Molecular Motors, Addison Caspari-Linhardt
Honors Theses
Astronauts encounter many forms of ionizing radiation during space travel. Ionizing radiation has been seen to cause cancer, cataracts, radiation sickness, tissue damage, hereditary effects, and damage to the central nervous system. Ionizing radiation can damage DNA molecules through oxidation, as well as other vital proteins like molecular motors. Kinesin-1 is a molecular motor protein that essential to intracellular transport. Microtubules serve as the “roadway” for kinesin transport, where kinesin converts chemical energy from ATP hydrolysis into mechanochemical “steps” to move along the microtubules. Optical trapping has been used in previous research to measure single kinesin motor properties. We have …

For additive manufacturing such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), commercial aluminum alloy (AA) 6061 is typically considered unsuitable due to formation of solidification cracking and/or excessive porosity. In this study, to improve buildability/printability of AA6061, 1 wt% of Zr was alloyed to produce Zr-modified AA6061 by LPBF. Powders of unmodified and Zr-modified AA6061 were produced by gas atomization, and utilized as a feed-stock for the LPBF to fabricate specimens for microstructural examination and mechanical testing. The as-built unmodified AA6061 exhibited poor printability due to formation of cracks and porosity in the microstructure regardless of LPBF parameters. However, the Zr-modified …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A new single-carrier sensor-less pulsewidth modulation (PWM) method using suggested pseudo reference functions is proposed for packed U-cell (PUC) converter to improve performance and reliability of the PUC converter. It is composed of one PWM carrier signal and two suggested pseudo reference functions. By employing the proposed modulation method, the PUC dc capacitor voltage ripple is substantially decreased, and faster sensor-less capacitor voltage balancing is obtained. Moreover, the power losses are evenly distributed among all power switches. Consequently, notable reduction of the PUC dc capacitor voltage ripple and even distribution of the power loss among switches enhance the PUC converter's …

Strategies to increase the proportion of neural stem cells that differentiate into neurons are vital for therapy of neurodegenerative disorders. In vitro, the extracellular matrix composition and topography have been found to be important factors in stem cell differentiation. We have developed a novel artificial extracellular matrix (aECM) formed by attaching gold nanocages (AuNCs) to glass coverslips. After culturing rat neural stem cells (rNSCs) on these gold nanocage-coated surfaces (AuNC-aECMs), we observed that 44.6% of rNSCs differentiated into neurons compared to only 27.9% for cells grown on laminin-coated glass coverslips. We applied laser irradiation to the AuNC-aECMs to introduce precise …

Electroactive Polymeric Composites To Mimic The Electromechanical Properties Of Myocardium In Cardiac Tissue Repair, Kaylee Meyers, Bruce Lee, Rupak Rajachar
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Due to the limited regenerative capabilities of cardiomyocytes, incidents of myocardial infarction can cause permanent damage to native myocardium through the formation of acellular, non-conductive scar tissue during wound repair. The generation of scar tissue in the myocardium compromises the biomechanical and electrical properties of the heart which can lead to further cardiac problems including heart failure. Currently, patients suffering from cardiac failure due to scarring undergo transplantation but limited donor availability and complications (i.e., rejection or infectious pathogens) exclude many individuals from successful transplant. Polymeric tissue engineering scaffolds provide an alternative approach to restore normal myocardium structure and function …
Geometric Quality Assessment Of A Modular House Using Bim And Photogrammetric Point Clouds, Preetam Kapsikar
Geometric Quality Assessment Of A Modular House Using Bim And Photogrammetric Point Clouds, Preetam Kapsikar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
As-built documentation of modular structures is an important set of records for a project, that consist of construction drawings and specifications, project design modifications, prefabrication, and component assembly. In particular, manual geometric quality assessments of a structure’s prefabricated components are generally fraught with errors, making it extremely difficult to compare the as-built construction with the specified drawings, which affects the project. Furthermore, if the prefabricated components are manufactured with errors, this can result in construction schedule delays and high additional costs due to rework. Several technologies, such as point cloud data generated using laser sensors and LiDAR, have been developed …

Investigation Of Bio-Inspired Pin Geometries For Heat Transfer Applications, Anish Prasad
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Array of circular cylindrical pins or tubes are one of the most widely used type of convection cooling systems, profoundly used in the internal cooling of gas turbine blades. They promote heat transfer due to flow acceleration, secondary flows and wake shedding, at the expense of large pressure loss and unsteadiness in the flow. The need to reduce pressure loss and maintain the heat transfer rates are a much needed requirement for a variety of industries to improve the cooling efficiency. One such prominent line of research is conducted on optimizing the design of the circular cylindrical pins to increase …

Environmental Impacts Of Overdesign In Small Community Water Resource Recovery Facilities, Andrew Pham
Department of Environmental Engineering: Theses and Other Student Research
Although water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) reduce environmental impacts related to water quality, their construction and operation result in negative environmental impacts in other categories. Past research into Nebraska WRRFs investigated variables determining energy intensity, opportunities and barriers for energy efficiency improvements, and environmental impacts of the construction and operation phase. This leads to the research question of what design practices can be considered to reduce the environmental impacts.
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology was used to evaluate and compare the inventory and environmental impacts of nine small WRRFs, most of which are serving slow growing or declining populations. …

Achieving Differential Privacy And Fairness In Machine Learning, Depeng Xu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Machine learning algorithms are used to make decisions in various applications, such as recruiting, lending and policing. These algorithms rely on large amounts of sensitive individual information to work properly. Hence, there are sociological concerns about machine learning algorithms on matters like privacy and fairness. Currently, many studies only focus on protecting individual privacy or ensuring fairness of algorithms separately without taking consideration of their connection. However, there are new challenges arising in privacy preserving and fairness-aware machine learning. On one hand, there is fairness within the private model, i.e., how to meet both privacy and fairness requirements simultaneously in …

An 8-Bit Analog-To-Digital Converter For Battery Operated Wireless Sensor Nodes, Marvin Wayne Suggs Jr.
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wireless sensing networks (WSNs) collect analog information transduced into the form of a voltage or current. This data is typically converted into a digital representation of the value and transmitted wirelessly using various modulation techniques. As the available power and size is limited for wireless sensor nodes in many applications, a medium resolution Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) is proposed to convert a sensed voltage with moderate speeds to lower power consumption. Specifications also include a rail-to-rail input range and minimized errors associated with offset, gain, differential nonlinearity, and integral nonlinearity. To achieve these specifications, an 8-bit successive approximation register ADC is …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) was introduced by Steven Grossberg as a theory of human cognitive information processing (Grossberg 1976, 1980). Extending the capabilities of the ART 1 model, which can learn to categorize patterns in binary data, fuzzy ART as described in (Carpenter, Grossberg, and Rosen 1991) has become one of the most commenly used Adaptive Resonance Theory models (Brito da Silva, Elnabarawy, and Wunsch 2019). By incorporating fuzzy set theroy operators, fuzzy ART is capable of learning from binaray and bounded real valued data. Its advantage over other unsupervised learning algorithms lies in the flexibility of the learning rule. …

Analysis Of Fluid Flow In Redox Flow Batteries, Erfan Asadipour
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Redox flow batteries (RFB) hold great potential for large-scale stationary energy storage. However, their low energy density compared to other energy storage systems must improve for feasibility. Electrolyte flow distribution affects current density distribution and providing a uniform current density distribution is one way to improve RFB performance. Additionally, reducing the power consumption of the electrolytes’ pump as a source of energy loss in RFB systems increases their efficiency. Investigating both subjects requires analysis of the fluid dynamics in RFB cells.
In this thesis, a novel, computationally cost-effective hydraulic-electrical analogous model (HEAM) was developed to study fluid dynamics by implementing …
