Characterization Of Application-Driven Sol-Gel Coated Meshes And Composites, Armaghan Naderi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Surface engineering is a multi-disciplinary research area that encompasses disciplines such as materials science, chemistry, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Coating is a surface modification technique in surface engineering, applied on the surface of a substrate (i.e., bulk material), to cover/protect it from environmental degradation or to modify/improve surface properties for specific applications. This PhD research presents an in-depth investigation of sol-gel ceramic coatings to modify surface characteristics of bulk materials for two specific applications: 1) antistatic/antidust applications, and 2) biomaterial implant applications.
First, zirconia antistatic thin films on glass substrates, and their application to polymer-based composites, was studied. Zirconia …

Current methods for artifact analysis and understanding depend on investigator expertise. Experienced and technically savvy examiners spend a lot of time reverse engineering applications while attempting to find crumbs they leave behind on systems. This takes away valuable time from the investigative process, and slows down forensic examination. Furthermore, when specific artifact knowledge is gained, it stays within the respective forensic units. To combat these challenges, we present ForensicAF, an approach for leveraging curated, crowd-sourced artifacts from the Artifact Genome Project (AGP). The approach has the overarching goal of uncovering forensically relevant artifacts from storage media. We explain our approach …

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is known to improve student outcomes but is rarely combined with STEM. In this paper we present an action research study to examine the impact of a STEM + SEL curriculum intervention to address a real-world school conflict. One hundred sixth–eighth graders and four teachers participated in an in-person facilitation of a SEL Arthropod curriculum, DIFFERENT. After the intervention, students completed open-ended couplet statements about arthropod behavior, tarantulas, and humans designed to measure sentiment change. Answers were manually coded using inductive coding on a scale of negative (1) to positive (5). Statement sentiments significantly shifted from negative …

Exosomes are cell-derived nanovesicles that have recently gained popularity as potential biomarkers in liquid biopsies due to the large amounts of molecular cargo they carry, such as nucleic acids and proteins. However, most existing exosome-based analytical sensing methods struggle to achieve high sensitivity and high selectivity simultaneously. In this work, we present an electrochemical micro-aptasensor for the highly sensitive detection of exosomes by integrating a micropatterned electrochemical aptasensor and a hybridization chain reaction (HCR) signal amplification method. Specifically, exosomes are enriched on CD63 aptamer-functionalized electrodes and then recognized by HCR products with avidin-horseradish peroxidase (HRP) attached using EpCAM aptamers as …

Machine learning (ML) is vital to many application-driven fields, such as image and signal classification, cyber-security, and health sciences. Unfortunately, many of these fields can easily have their training data tampered with by an adversary to thwart an ML algorithm’s objective. Further, the adversary can impact any stage in an ML pipeline (e.g., preprocessing, learning, and classification). Recent work has shown that many models can be attacked by poisoning the training data, and the impact of the poisoned data can be quite significant. Prior works on adversarial feature selection have shown that the attacks can damage feature selection (FS). Filter …
Automated Statistical Structural Testing Techniques And Applications, Yang Shi
Automated Statistical Structural Testing Techniques And Applications, Yang Shi
Dissertations and Theses
Statistical structural testing(SST) is an effective testing technique that produces random test inputs from probability distributions. SST shows superiority in fault-revealing power over random testing and deterministic approaches since it heritages the merits from both of them. SST ensures testing thoroughness by setting up a probability lower-bound criterion for each structural cover element and test inputs that exercise a structural cover element sampled from the probability distribution, ensuring testing randomness. Despite the advantages, SST is not a widely used approach in practice. There are two major limitations. First, to construct probability distributions, a tester must understand the underlying software's structure, …

The Effect Of A Ferrite-Core Relay Vs. An Air-Core Relay On The Output Power Characteristics Of A Three-Coil Wireless Power Transfer System, Jakob L. White
University Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to determine the effect of using a ferrite-core relay on the output power characteristics of a three-coil, parallel-tuned, domino-resonator wireless power transfer (WPT) system in comparison to the effect of using an air-core relay in such a system. First, a general mathematical model is presented to describe both the ferrite-core-relay system and the air-core-relay system and to calculate their output power characteristics for seven different resistive loads at each of five different distance configurations between the coils. Next, experimental results are analyzed and compared to the mathematical results to confirm model accuracy. Finally, the …

The dry deposition process refers to flux loss of an atmospheric pollutant due to uptake of the pollutant by the Earth's surfaces, including vegetation, underlying soil, and any other surface types. In chemistry transport models (CTMs), the dry deposition flux of a chemical species is typically calculated as the product of its surface layer concentration and its dry deposition velocity (Vd); the latter is a variable that needs to be highly empirically parameterized due to too many meteorological, biological, and chemical factors affecting this process. The gaseous dry deposition scheme of Zhang et al. (2003) parameterizes Vd for 31 inorganic …

Dimensionality Reduction For Classification Of Object Weight From Electromyography, Elnaz Lashgari, Uri Maoz
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Electromyography (EMG) is a simple, non-invasive, and cost-effective technology for measuring muscle activity. However, multi-muscle EMG is also a noisy, complex, and high-dimensional signal. It has nevertheless been widely used in a host of human-machine-interface applications (electrical wheelchairs, virtual computer mice, prosthesis, robotic fingers, etc.) and, in particular, to measure the reach-and-grasp motions of the human hand. Here, we developed an automated pipeline to predict object weight in a reach-grasp-lift task from an open dataset, relying only on EMG data. In doing so, we shifted the focus from manual feature-engineering to automated feature-extraction by using pre-processed EMG signals and thus …

Threshold Concentration And Random Collision Determine The Growth Of The Huntingtin Inclusion From A Stable Core, Sen Pei, Theresa C. Swayne, Jeffrey F. Morris, Lesley Emtage
Publications and Research
The processes underlying formation and growth of unfolded protein inclusions are relevant to neurodegenerative diseases but poorly characterized in living cells. In S. cerevisiae, inclusions formed by mutant huntingtin (mHtt) have some characteristics of biomolecular condensates but the physical nature and growth mechanisms of inclusion bodies remain unclear. We have probed the relationship between concentration and inclusion growth in vivo and find that growth of mHtt inclusions in living cells is triggered at a cytoplasmic threshold concentration, while reduction in cytoplasmic mHtt causes inclusions to shrink. The growth rate is consistent with incorporation of new material through collision and coalescence. …

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is routinely used for brain tumor diagnosis, treatment planning, and post-treatment surveillance. Recently, various models based on deep neural networks have been proposed for the pixel-level segmentation of tumors in brain MRIs. However, the structural variations, spatial dissimilarities, and intensity inhomogeneity in MRIs make segmentation a challenging task. We propose a new end-to-end brain tumor segmentation architecture based on U-Net that integrates Inception modules and dilated convolutions into its contracting and expanding paths. This allows us to extract local structural as well as global contextual information. We performed segmentation of glioma sub-regions, including tumor core, enhancing …

Understanding And Improving Adult Stem Cells For Cartilage Tissue Engineering, Dakota Katz
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Articular cartilage allows for near frictionless joint movement; however, when damaged the tissue has very little capacity for self-repair. Tissue engineering can be used to both repair damaged articular cartilage and as an in vitro model for joint disease. Commonly used cell sources for tissue engineering are adipose-derived and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs and MSCs) because they can be patient matched, expand rapidly in culture, and have multipotent differentiation potential. However, donor-to-donor variability of differentiation potential can mask the results of in vitro experiments and ASCs and MSCs only retain their multipotency for a limited number of passages. …

Elucidating And Leveraging Dynamics-Function Relationships In Neural Circuits Through Modeling And Optimal Control, Sruti Mallik
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
A fundamental research question in neuroscience pertains to understanding how neural networks through their activity encode and decode information. In this research, we build on methods from theoretical domains such as control theory, dynamical systems analysis and reinforcement learning to investigate such questions. Our objective is two-fold: first, to use methods from engineering to identify specific objectives that neural circuits might be optimizing through their spatiotemporal activity patterns, and second, to draw motivation from neuroscience to formulate new engineering principles such as synthesis of dynamical networks for decentralized control applications. We specifically take a top-down, optimization driven approach in our …

Insects are ideal candidates for developing bio-robotic systems owing to their ability to thrive in almost any environment. For example, neurons in their exquisite olfactory sensory systems can be tapped to create a sensing platform for standoff chemical monitoring. However, for enabling such cyborg systems, it is vital that the neural activity of a freely behaving organism can be measured for long periods of time. The current state-of-the-art neural recording techniques are power-intensive and they either need batteries, which make them too bulky for insects, or they have to maintain a continuous telemetry link to an external power source which …

Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to loss of motor function among other devastating impairments, with patients having a grim outlook on recovery as currently there are no widely efficacious treatment methods. The native regenerative capacity of the neurons in the central nervous system is limited, thus recovery of the axonal connections between the different components of the complex circuitry that enables motor function is minimal after SCI. Investigators aiming to improve motor function post-SCI approach the problem from different angles, including removing inhibitory elements to axonal regeneration and supporting regeneration through implantation of biomaterials, exposure to pro-regenerative factors, and transplantation …
Investigation Of Microdroplet Generation, Morphological Evolution, And Applications Under Quasi-Steady And Dynamic States, Li Shan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Microscale droplets are commonly encountered in the fields of materials processing, thermal fluids, and biology. While these droplets are naturally occurring, recent advances in microfabrication have enabled researchers to harness their enhanced transport characteristics for numerous laboratory and industrial applications from controlled chemical synthesis to inkjet printing and thermal management. Smaller droplets have larger specific surface area and a greater perimeter-to-area ratio when resting on a surface (i.e., sessile), which accelerates processes occurring at droplet surfaces like evaporation, chemical reaction, or combustion. The demand for microdroplets with smaller and more uniform sizes has motivated investigation of how such droplets can …

Despite the vast applications of transformable ceramics, such as zirconia-based ceramics, in different areas from biomedical to aerospace, the fundamental knowledge about their mechanical degradation procedure is limited. The interaction of the phase transformation and crack growth is crucial as the essential underlying mechanism in fracture of these transformable ceramics, also known as shape memory ceramics. This study develops a three-dimensional (3D) multiphysics model that couples the variational formulation of brittle crack growth to the Ginzburg-Landau equations of martensitic transformation. We parameterized the model for the 3D single crystal zirconia, which experienced stress- and thermal-induced tetragonal to monoclinic transformation. The …

Among all cancers related to women’s reproductive systems, ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate. Pelvic examination, transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS), and blood testing for cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), are the conventional screening tools for ovarian cancer, but they offer very low specificity. Other tools, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET), also have limitations in detecting small lesions. In the USA, considering men and women separately, colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of death related to cancer; for men and women combined, it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths. …

Analog/mixed-signal (AMS) integrated circuits (ICs) play an essential role in electronic systems by processing analog signals and performing data conversion to bridge the analog physical world and our digital information world.Their ubiquitousness powers diverse applications ranging from smart devices and autonomous cars to crucial infrastructures. Despite such critical importance, conventional design strategies of AMS circuits still follow an expensive and time-consuming manual process and are unable to meet the exponentially-growing productivity demands from industry and satisfy the rapidly-changing design specifications from many emerging applications. Design automation of AMS IC is thus the key to tackling these challenges and has been …
Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized By Nonthermal Plasma For Electrochemical Applications, Qinyi Chen
Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized By Nonthermal Plasma For Electrochemical Applications, Qinyi Chen
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Metal oxide nanocrystals can be synthesized by colloidal processing and gas-phase processing routes. High-quality nanocrystals produced by colloidal routes typically have surface ligands. Transport of electrons and ions among nanocrystals is hindered by surface ligand, and degrades related electrical performance. Gas-phase processing, for example combustion and thermal plasma, can make free-standing nanocrystals. However, nanocrystals produced by combustion method are heavily agglomerated, which further limits the usage of nanoparticles in electrochemical applications. Nonthermal plasma, as an emerging attractive route, has been initially focused on the synthesis of elemental group IV materials, and extended to include the synthesis of multicomponent materials, such …

Towards The Discovery Of Prognostic Biomarkers For Glioblastoma Using Resting-State Functional Connectivity, Andy G. S. Daniel
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Gliomas are highly diffusive, primary brain tumors. The most malignant form, glioblastoma, has a dismal survival rate: 14-17 months following the current standard of care, which consists of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Insights into the molecular, cellular, and microenvironmental components of glioblastoma have revealed a vast array of factors utilized to support its proliferation, infiltration, and resistance to treatment. Recent advancements have also identified diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers that are now being used to guide treatment planning. However, survival has improved only marginally, thus emphasizing the continued need for novel biomarkers and treatment strategies. Given its delicate location in the …

Continuous-Time And Complex Growth Transforms For Analog Computing And Optimization, Oindrila Chatterjee
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Analog computing is a promising and practical candidate for solving complex computational problems involving algebraic and differential equations. At the fundamental level, an analog computing framework can be viewed as a dynamical system that evolves following fundamental physical principles, like energy minimization, to solve a computing task. Additionally, conservation laws, such as conservation of charge, energy, or mass, provide a natural way to couple and constrain spatially separated variables. Taking a cue from these observations, in this dissertation, I have explored a novel dynamical system-based computing framework that exploits naturally occurring analog conservation constraints to solve a variety of optimization …

Driven by escalating concerns on global warming and climate change, significant efforts have recently been initiated to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentration. Power generation from fossil fuels is the largest source of anthropogenic CO2. The US government has incentivized carbon capture through Section 45Q Tax code, which provides US$50/tCO2 (per metric ton) of qualified carbon dioxide captured and sequestered, as tax credits. The cost for carbon capture, transport and sequestration is US$75 – 150/t CO2, with the state-of-the-art capture technology costing between US$20 – 100/t CO2. Amine based post-combustion CO2 capture is the most economic technology suited for large power plants. …

Angiogenesis, the growth of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature, is primarily regulated by vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs). Dysregulated angiogenesis is associated with cancers, obesity, and over 70 vascular diseases. Upregulated VEGFR protein expressions in diseased vasculature are promising biomarkers for predicting clinical outcomes, as indicated by non-quantitative immunohistochemical studies in patients with impaired vascularization or tumor angiogenesis. While the quantitative characterization of VEGFRs is critical in identifying biomarkers for anti-angiogenic therapies, VEGFR biomarker development presents two particular challenges: (1) The invasive tissue biopsy needed limits the amount of VEGFR data that can be collected from both normal and …
