Construction Disputes And Associated Contractual Knowledge Discovery Using Unstructured Text-Heavy Data: Legal Cases In The United Kingdom, Jeehee Lee, Youngjib Ham, June-Seong Yi

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Construction disputes are one of the main challenges to successful construction projects. Most construction parties experience claims—and even worse, disputes—which are costly and time-consuming to resolve. Lessons learned from past failure cases can help reduce potential future risk factors that likely lead to disputes. In particular, case law, which has been accumulated from the past, is valuable information, providing useful insights to prepare for future disputes. However, few efforts have been made to discover legal knowledge using a large scale of case laws in the construction field. The aim of this paper is to enhance understanding of the multifaceted legal …

Developing A Strategy For Creating Affordable Student Housing Solutions, Juan D. Campolargo

altREU Projects

College is becoming more and more expensive, and students are graduating with more and more debt. In 2021, we have almost 1.6 trillion dollars of student loan debt. While students are in college, they need a place to live, and this project will be about how to develop a strategy for creating affordable student housing solutions.

Housing should not be another cause of concern to students or really anyone.

The way it’s done is that people get more loans to pay for housing, or they work as much as they can when they’re not studying to pay for rent. Affordable …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

UV photolysis is an effective process to remove nitrosamines from contaminated water resources. Nitrosamines represent a class of compounds with high potential for carcinogenicity and, therefore, there are serious concerns regarding their threat to human health and their environmental toxicity. Although the photochemical parameters of parent nitrosamines and their initial reaction pathways are well understood, the fate of nitrogen-containing species and reactive nitrogen species generated from nitrosamine degradation has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we develop an elementary reaction-based kinetic model for the photolysis of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and the photochemical transformation products. We use density functional theory quantum …

Euler's Three-Body Problem, Sylvio R. Bistafa Aug 2021

Euler's Three-Body Problem, Sylvio R. Bistafa

Euleriana

In physics and astronomy, Euler's three-body problem is to solve for the motion of a body that is acted upon by the gravitational field of two other bodies. This problem is named after Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), who discussed it in memoirs published in the 1760s. In these publications, Euler found that the parameter that controls the relative distances among three collinear bodies is given by a quintic equation. Later on, in 1772, Lagrange dealt with the same problem, and demonstrated that for any three masses with circular orbits, there are two special constant-pattern solutions, one where the three bodies remain …

The Challenges Of Applying Computational Legal Analysis To Mhealth Security And Privacy Regulations, Brian Tung Aug 2021

The Challenges Of Applying Computational Legal Analysis To Mhealth Security And Privacy Regulations, Brian Tung

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

As our world has grown in complexity, so have our laws. By one measure, the United States Code has grown over 30x as long since 1935, and the 186,000-page Code of Federal Regulations has grown almost 10x in length since 1938. Our growing legal system is too complicated; it’s impossible for people to know all the laws that apply to them. However, people are still subject to the law, even if they are unfamiliar with it. Therein lies the need for computational legal analysis. Tools of computation (e.g., data visualization, algorithms, and artificial intelligence) have the potential to transform civic …

Regularized Coordinate-Based Neural Representation Learning For Optical Tomography, Renhao Liu Aug 2021

Regularized Coordinate-Based Neural Representation Learning For Optical Tomography, Renhao Liu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Neural representation learning recently shows outstanding performance in several computer vision tasks. In this thesis, we propose a novel self-supervised neural represented reconstruction method for optical tomography. Our method uses a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) network to represent the target sample without the need for any ground truth or training data. The MLP weights serve as a latent representation of the target object. Any desired permittivity information can be inferred by querying the neural network within the sample domain. We also investigate applying regularization to implicitly restrict the manifold of MLP for better performance. Our experiments produce low artifacts results with …

Scatter Estimation And Correction For Experimental And Simulated Data In Multi-Slice Computed Tomography Using Machine Learning And Minimum Least Squares Methods, Cornelia Wang Aug 2021

Scatter Estimation And Correction For Experimental And Simulated Data In Multi-Slice Computed Tomography Using Machine Learning And Minimum Least Squares Methods, Cornelia Wang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Current research aims to reduce the stopping power ratio prediction error in the inputs to the proton therapy planning process to less than 1%, which allows for improved radiation therapy planning. Our present study on reducing SPR error neglects the effect of scattering, which can increase SPR error by as much as 1-1.5%. The idea is that for each source-to-detector pair, 24 mm collimation data is close to 3 mm collimation data but with increased signal due to scattering. The goal is to estimate 3 mm collimation data from 24 mm collimation data. Pairs of sinograms, both experimental data and …

Multi-Agent Radiation Localization, Teresa Nguyen Aug 2021

Multi-Agent Radiation Localization, Teresa Nguyen

REU Final Reports

Advancement of radiation detection technology is an ongoing process, and adjustments are made based on pre-existing conditions of radiation presence--both natural and man made. Tools that are currently used for safely detecting radiation in urban environments exist in several forms: drones, robots, or handheld radiation detection devices. This is a harm reductive way to explore radiation-infected environments while preserving human health as best as possible. In order for these autonomous platforms to successfully detect radiation sources, an algorithm needs to be created that is capable of gathering crucial data on its own with little to no human interference. Machine learning …

Nonlocal Topological Insulators: Deterministic Aperiodic Arrays Supporting Localized Topological States Protected By Nonlocal Symmetries, Kai Chen, Matthew Weiner, Mengyao Li, Xiang Ni, Andrea Alù, Alexander B. Khanikaev Aug 2021

Nonlocal Topological Insulators: Deterministic Aperiodic Arrays Supporting Localized Topological States Protected By Nonlocal Symmetries, Kai Chen, Matthew Weiner, Mengyao Li, Xiang Ni, Andrea Alù, Alexander B. Khanikaev

Advanced Science Research Center

The properties of topological systems are inherently tied to their dimensionality. Indeed, higher-dimensional periodic systems exhibit topological phases not shared by their lower-dimensional counterparts. On the other hand, aperiodic arrays in lower-dimensional systems (e.g., the Harper model) have been successfully employed to emulate higher-dimensional physics. This raises a general question on the possibility of extended topological classification in lower dimensions, and whether the topological invariants of higher-dimensional periodic systems may assume a different meaning in their lower-dimensional aperiodic counterparts. Here, we demonstrate that, indeed, for a topological system in higher dimensions one can construct a one-dimensional (1D) deterministic aperiodic counterpart …

The Allocation Of Jamming Resources Based On Double Q-Learning Algorithm, Xingyuan Huang, Yanyi Li Aug 2021

The Allocation Of Jamming Resources Based On Double Q-Learning Algorithm, Xingyuan Huang, Yanyi Li

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In modern warfare, the multifunctional trend of radars, even multiple radars detecting targets together, enhances the anti-jamming capability of radars. However, the traditional jamming system still follows a fixed jamming strategy, and the real-time performance of decision-making facing large numbers of radars is poor. And the cognitive jamming study is urgent. The concept of reinforcement learning is explained and the difference between Q learning algorithm and double Q learning algorithm is compared. The reinforcement learning algorithm is used to establish a model based on cognitive electronic warfare to realize the allocation of radar jamming strategies. The simulation of the …

Silk Fibroin Supraparticles Created By The Evaporation Of Colloidal Ouzo Droplets, Ashley Lamb, Fengjie He, Shengjie Zhai, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Due to its high biocompatibility and biodegradability, supraparticles made from silk fibroin—produced from Bombyx mori (B. mori) cocoons—can find various applications in biomedical fields. The evaporation of Ouzo droplets by not requiring energy nor a surfactant is an environmentally friendly, easy, and cost-effective strategy to fabricate three-dimensional supraparticles, tackling the so-called “coffee ring effect” associated with droplet evaporation. Silk fibroins are dissolved into quaternary droplets, comprised of ultrapure water, ethanol, trans-anethole oil, and formic acid. The Ouzo droplet is able to form an oil ring that facilitates the droplet contraction to create a three-dimensional supraparticle. Using the Ouzo effect to …

Relationship Between Suspension Damping And Stability Of Vehicle Hunting Motion, Yan Yong, Zeng Jing, Kun Xu, Feiyan Zhao

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to avoid or restrain the primary hunting stability of rail vehicles, correlation between the primary hunting stability and suspension damping parameters under the damping ratio of 0 and 5% is calculated based on the analysis of suspension parameters on the vehicle modal frequency. The method to improve the stability of vehicle hunting motion by optimizing suspension parameters is obtained. The results show that when selecting different damping ratios to calculate the critical stability, the range of damping parameters varies greatly. The lateral damping parameter in a certain range or a larger vertical damping is beneficial to keep …
