Remote Sensing And Human Health: New Sensors And New Opportunities, Louisa R. Beck, Bradley M. Lobitz, Byron L. Wood
Online Journal of Space Communication
Remote sensing data enable scientists to study the earth's biotic and abiotic components. These components and their changes have been mapped from space at several temporal and spatial scales since 1972. A small number of investigators in the health community have explored remotely sensed environmental factors that might be associated with disease-vector habitats and human transmission risk. However, most human health studies using remote sensing data have focused on data from Landsat's Multispectral Scanner (MSS) and Thematic Mapper (TM), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), and France's Système Pour l'Observation de la Terre …

Online Journal of Space Communication
More than 30 years ago, human beings looked back from the Moon to see the magnificent spectacle of Earthrise. The technology that put us into space has since been used to assess the damage we are doing to our natural environment and is now being harnessed to monitor and predict diseases through space and time. Satellite sensor data promise the development of early-warning systems for diseases such as malaria, which kills between 1 and 2 million people each year.

Adoption Of Telemedicine In Scottish Remote And Rural General Practices: A Qualitative Study, Gerry King, Helen Richards, David Godden
Online Journal of Space Communication
In the past decade there has been increasing use of information technology in Scottish primary care. The majority of general practitioners (GPs) now accept that computing is part of their everyday practice. Some GPs in Scotland have used telemedicine for the referral of patients for specialist opinion or for access to educational resources. However, although the potential benefits of telemedicine to primary care are arguably greatest in the remote and rural context, the few existing studies suggest that uptake is slow and piecemeal. There have been a number of studies of the knowledge, experience and attitudes of health-care professionals to …

An Internet-Based Telemedicine System In Nigeria, Olumide Sunday Adewale
Online Journal of Space Communication
Telecommunication technologies are being used to change the healthcare industry in unprecedented and irreversible ways. These technologies are enabling delivery of healthcare to remotely placed patients and facilitating information exchange between generalists and specialists. For many decades now, the use of advanced telecommunications and information technologies has been investigated in an effort to improve healthcare. In particular, the focus has been centered on telemedicine. Telemedicine has been defined as the delivery of healthcare and the exchange of health information across distances, including all medical activities: making diagnosis, treatment, prevention, education and research (Craig, 1999). Telemedicine is also defined as the …

A Review Of Telemedicine In China, Zhelong Wang, Hong Gu
Online Journal of Space Communication
Telemedicine changes conventional medical practice and enables patients to access medical service via telecommunication. Telemedicine thus establishes a new kind of relationship between smaller hospitals and larger ones, and between patients and hospitals generally. Patients and subordinate hospitals may benefit from the resources of large hospitals, via teleconsultation, telediagnosis and telemonitoring. This is particularly beneficial for patients living in rural areas, where the health-care system is less well developed than in cities.

A Review Of Ict Systems For Hiv/Aids And Anti-Retroviral Treatment Management In South Africa, Tove Sørensen, Ulrike Rivett, Jill Fortuin
Online Journal of Space Communication
HIV/AIDS is a major global health problem. In South Africa, it is estimated that 5.4 million people are infected by HIV, out of a population of nearly 48 million, giving a prevalence rate of about 11%. About 600,000 individuals are infected with AIDS. Furthermore, the estimates show that, by mid-2006, some 711,000 people were in need of anti-retroviral treatment (ART), while 225,000 were actually receiving it.

Re-Inventing Health Care Training In The Developing World: The Case For Satellite Applications In Rural Environments, Krishnan Haridasan, Srinivasan Rangarajan, Gregory Pirio
Online Journal of Space Communication
The rapid advance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in low and middle income countries has created an unprecedented opportunity to change the way that pre-service and in-service education of health care workers is delivered. The virtual ubiquity of satellite delivery, the dramatically increasing accessibility to the Internet, and the ever expanding mobile phone platform means that there is virtually no part of the world that cannot take advantage of ICT to deliver more effective and less costly learning experience to health care practitioners. ICT can play a vital role in training healthcare professionals, across the board - in nursing schools, …
Telemedicine Systems And Telecommunications, Brett Harnett
Telemedicine Systems And Telecommunications, Brett Harnett
Online Journal of Space Communication
The practice of telemedicine can be divided into two distinct categories: realtime and store-and-forward. Realtime telemedicine involves synchronous interaction between the parties concerned. For example, a health-care professional and a patient may interact by videoconferencing. While realtime telemedicine is often effective in terms of consultation and patient satisfaction,[1][2] it presents challenges. Foremost is the scheduling of the parties concerned, because there are usually two health-care providers involved in the consultation (the local provider and the remote physician), and they both need to be available at the same time.

Telehealth Policy: Looking For Global Complementarity, Richard E. Scott, M. Faruq U. Chowdhury, Sunil Varghese
Online Journal of Space Communication
Telehealth, or increasingly 'e-health',[1] has been accepted by the World Health Organization as an important tool in achieving the goal of health for all. It has also been accepted in developing countries.[2] The primary motivators include the expectations that e-health will reduce health-care costs, expand services to under-served areas and populations, facilitate the change to a more public health orientation, and improve people's health, nutrition, knowledge and standards of living.[2-4] However, e-health needs to be integrated into existing health-care systems, in both a practical and a policy sense. Indeed, policy decisions will affect the ability of e-health to function effectively …

Satellite Services For Disaster Management And Security Applications, Otto Koudelka, Peter Schrotter
Online Journal of Space Communication
Satellites can be a vital communications element in case of emergencies or natural disasters. This is not only true for developing countries, but also for highly developed regions. As the example of the floods in Central Europe in 2002 have shown, even basic telecommunications services can become unavailable. During natural or man-made disasters, access to data from meteorological and remote sensing satellites is extremely important for assessing the situation.

The Possible Use Of Telemedicine In Developing Countries, R. Wootton
Online Journal of Space Communication
Since the place of telemedicine in the industrialized world is by no means properly worked out yet, it might seem premature to consider its use in developing countries. Nonetheless, there is interest in the possible use of telemedicine in developing countries, from at least two organizations:
- The Midjan group, an impromptu committee that was formed following the African Regional Telecommunications Development Conference in Abidjan in March 19963. This European telemedicine collaboration group aims to explore the use of telemedicine in developing countries. At present, the group includes representatives from 22 telecommunication and medical informatics suppliers, telecommunication operators, universities, hospitals and …

Posterior segment eye diseases (PSEDs) including age macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) are amongst the major causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Due to the numerous barriers encountered, highly invasive intravitreal (IVT) injections represent the primary route to deliver drugs to the posterior eye tissues. Thus, the potential of a more patient friendly topical route has been widely investigated. Mucoadhesive formulations can decrease precorneal clearance while prolonging precorneal residence. Thus, they are expected to enhance the chances of adherence to corneal and conjunctival surfaces and as such, enable increased delivery to the posterior eye segment. Among the mucoadhesive polymers …

Assessing Risks And Modeling Threats In The Internet Of Things, Paul Griffioen, Bruno Sinopoli
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Threat modeling and risk assessments are common ways to identify, estimate, and prioritize risk to national, organizational, and individual operations and assets. Several threat modeling and risk assessment approaches have been proposed prior to the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) that focus on threats and risks in information technology (IT). Due to shortcomings in these approaches and the fact that there are significant differences between the IoT and IT, we synthesize and adapt these approaches to provide a threat modeling framework that focuses on threats and risks in the IoT. In doing so, we develop an IoT attack …

Any effort to combat corruption can benefit from an examination of past and projected worldwide trends. In this paper, we forecast the level of corruption in countries by integrating artificial neural network modeling and time series analysis. The data were obtained from 113 countries from 2007 to 2017. The study is carried out at two levels: (a) the global level, where all countries are considered as a monolithic group; and (b) the cluster level, where countries are placed into groups based on their development-related attributes. For each cluster, we use the findings from our previous study on the cluster analysis …

Streaming Instability With Multiple Dust Species-Ii. Turbulence And Dust-Gas Dynamics At Non-Linear Saturation, Chao-Chin Yang, Zhaohuan Zhu
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
The streaming instability is a fundamental process that can drive dust-gas dynamics and ultimately planetesimal formation in protoplanetary discs. As a linear instability, it has been shown that its growth with a distribution of dust sizes can be classified into two distinct regimes, fast-and slow-growth, depending on the dust-size distribution and the total dust-To-gas density ratio . Using numerical simulations of an unstratified disc, we bring three cases in different regimes into non-linear saturation. We find that the saturation states of the two fast-growth cases are similar to its single-species counterparts. The one with maximum dimensionless stopping time τs,max = …

Advanced control techniques may be used to establish a virtual power plant to regulate the operation of electric water heaters, which may be regarded as a “uni-directional battery” and a major component of a hybrid residential energy storage system. In order to estimate the potential of regulating water heaters at the aggregated level, factors including user behavior, number of water heaters, and types of water heaters must be considered. This study develops generic water heater load curves based on the data retrieved from large experimental projects for resistive electric water heaters (EWHs) and heat pump water heaters (HPWHs). A community-level …

Frequency-Dependent Linearity Characterization And Uncertainty Analysis Of The Pace Oci Short-Wave Infrared Detection Assembly, Kenneth Squire, Jacob Hedelius, James Peterson, Eric Gorman, Gerhard Meister
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
The Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) will be used to collect data on the health of the planet’s oceans and atmosphere. Essential to OCI is its Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) Detection Assembly (SDA), which measures light at discrete bands of interest. The linearity knowledge of the SDA detectors is crucial for collection of accurate and meaningful scientific data. This document presents the methodology employed in measuring the linearity response of the SDA to optical inputs at various modulation frequencies as well as the accompanying linearity uncertainty analysis.

Dynamical System And Parameter Identification For Power Systems, Abdullah Abdulrahman Alassaf
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The complexity of dynamical analysis has been growing to suffice the understanding and modeling of dynamical systems. Besides its nonlinearity and high-dimensionality, the dynamics of power systems contain uncertainty that complicates its analysis. Recently, dynamical modeling has been categorized into three types: white-box, black-box, and gray-box. White-box modeling has the accessibility of all system components. Black-box modeling has the observability of the system measurements without knowing the actual system. Gray-box modeling has the observability of the system measurements with the reachability to some of the system components. The scope of this dissertation focuses on black-box and gray-box models to achieve …

An Enhanced Predictive Hierarchical Power Management Framework For Islanded Microgrids, Jimiao Zhang, Jie Li, Ning Wang, Ben Wu
An Enhanced Predictive Hierarchical Power Management Framework For Islanded Microgrids, Jimiao Zhang, Jie Li, Ning Wang, Ben Wu
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
This paper proposes an enhanced three-layer predictive hierarchical power management framework for secure and economic operation of islanded microgrids. The tertiary control, guaranteeing the microgrid economic operation, is built upon the semi-definite programming-based AC optimal power flow model, which periodically sends power references to secondary control. To mitigate uncertainties arising from renewable generations and loads, a centralized linear model predictive control (MPC) controller is proposed and implemented for secondary control. The MPC controller can effectively regulate the microgrid system frequency by closely tracking reference signals from the tertiary controller with low computational complexity. Droop-based primary controllers are implemented to coordinate …

In Situ Characterization Of Tensile Behavior Of Laser Rapid Solidified Al–Si Heterogeneous Microstructures, Bingqiang Wei, Wenqian Wu, Dongyue Xie, Huai-Hsun Lien, Metin Kayitmazbatir, Amit Misra, Jian Wang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Heterogeneous Al–Si microstructure comprising of sub-micron-scale Al dendrites and nanoscale Al–Si fibrous eutectic was fabricated by processing as-cast Al-20wt.%Si alloy using laser rapid solidification. In situ tension tests explored high tensile strength ( ∼ 600 MPa) and ductility ( ∼ 10%) and high strain hardening rate ( ∼ 7 GPa). Microstructural characterization revealed the plastic co[1]deformation mechanisms between soft Al dendrites and hard nanoscale Al–Si eutectic. The progression of plasticity in nanoscale Al–Si eutectic with increasing applied strain is accommodated by dislocation plasticity in the nano-Al channels and cracking Si nanofibers. The propagation of nano-cracks is suppressed by surrounding Al, …

The Internet of Things (IoT) is reshaping modern society by allowing a decent number of RF devices to connect and share information through RF channels. However, such an open nature also brings obstacles to surveillance. For alleviation, a surveillance oracle, or a cognitive communication entity needs to identify and confirm the appearance of known or unknown signal sources in real-time. In this paper, we provide a deep learning framework for RF signal surveillance. Specifically, we jointly integrate the Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) and Quickest Detection (QD) to form a sequential signal surveillance scheme. We first analyze the latent space characteristic …
