Subharmonic Resonance Of One Fourth Order Of Electrostatically Actuated Mems Circular Plates: Amplitude-Frequency Response, Dumitru Caruntu, Julio Beatriz, Miguel Martinez

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This work deals with the amplitude-frequency response subharmonic resonance of 1/4 order of electrostatically actuated circular plates. The method of multiple scales is used to model the hard excitations and to predict the response. This work predicts that the steady state solutions are zero amplitude solutions, and non-zero amplitude solutions which consist of stable and unstable branches. The effects of parameters such as voltage and damping on the response are predicted. As the voltage increases, the non-zero amplitude solutions are shifted to lower frequencies. As the damping increases, the non-zero steady-state amplitudes are shifted to higher amplitudes, so larger initial …

Reaction Pathways Of Molecular Growth For Bay-Region Methyl-Substituted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons During Supercritical Pyrolysis Of N-Decane, Venkata Sai Krishna Karthik Vutukuru

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Prior to its combustion, fuel for future-highspeed aircraft will experience supercritical conditions, causing the fuel to undergo pyrolytic reactions that lead to the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), precursors to fuel-line solids that hinder aircraft’s safe operation. Therefore, understanding the formation pathways of PAH under supercritical conditions is important to preventing formation of these solids.

Previous work from our group has shown that n-alkanes are particularly problematic regarding solids formation and that the model fuel n-decane produces an abundance of aliphatics and one- to nine-ring aromatics—many of which are methyl-substituted. Some of these methyl-substituted PAH have their …

The Profound Photophysical Effects Of Organic Chromophore Connectivity And Coupling, David J. Walwark Jr Nov 2021

The Profound Photophysical Effects Of Organic Chromophore Connectivity And Coupling, David J. Walwark Jr

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Through-bond and through-space interactions between chromophores are shown to have wide-ranging effects on photophysical outcomes upon light absorption in organic molecules. In collapsed poly(3-hexylthiophene), through-space coupling creates hybrid chromophores that act as energy sinks for nearby excitons and favorable sites for molecular oxygen to dock. Upon excitation with visible light the highly-coupled chromophores react with the docked oxygen and subsequently do not quench nearby excitons as efficiently. In tetramer arrays of perylene diimide chromophores the central moiety through-bond connectivity is synthesized in two variants which exhibit vastly different single-molecule blinking behavior and theoretically-predicted electronic transition character. In the more-connected tetramer …

Silica Sol-Gel Control With High Voltage Contactless Electrodes, Jonathan C. Hebert Nov 2021

Silica Sol-Gel Control With High Voltage Contactless Electrodes, Jonathan C. Hebert

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

High Voltage Contactless Electrodes (HVE) non-evasively modulates silica sol-gel reactions by redistributing charge in solution. HVE induces formation of local neutral band (LNB) strata (pseudo interfacial surfaces) where the gradient of potential is zero ∇𝜓𝜓=0. HVE LNB shape corresponds to solubility and ultimately sol-gel form. HVE silica sol-gel control works by localizing pH and creating conditions where silanol polymerization is biform; condensation by protonation (cathodic), or by deprotonation (anodic). Steric modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation is used to develop a theory on HVE control of silica sol-gel formation and a nucleate potential functional of potential 𝜓𝜓. Technologies developed during this research are …

The Effect Of Viscosity On The Puddle Dynamics In Low Gravity Environment, Taif Hamed Saleh Al Juboori Nov 2021

The Effect Of Viscosity On The Puddle Dynamics In Low Gravity Environment, Taif Hamed Saleh Al Juboori

Dissertations and Theses

Enormous liquid puddles are observed to jump spontaneously from non-wetting substrates when exposed to the nearly step-reduction in body force common to drop tower test facilities. The phenomenon is similar to the second half of terrestrial drop bounce experiments except that (1) the initial static equilibrium configuration satisfies the static contact angle condition, (2) the initial height of the puddle is limited to the capillary height, and (3), for drop tower test durations on the order of seconds, puddle volumes can be over 104 times larger in mass (volume). The passive puddle jump mechanism provides a no-moving-parts deployment method …
