Evaporative Vapor Deposition For Depositing 2d Materials, Kevin Gleason Jan 2015

Evaporative Vapor Deposition For Depositing 2d Materials, Kevin Gleason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of a new deposition technique called evaporative vapor deposition (EVD) is reported, allowing deposition and formation of atomically-thin, large area materials on arbitrary substrates. This work focuses on the highly popular monolayer material – graphene oxide (GO). A droplet of a GO solution is formed on a heated polymer substrate, and maintained at steady-state evaporation (all droplet parameters are held constant over time). The polymer substrate is laser patterned to control the droplet's contact line dynamics and the droplet's contact angle is maintained using a computer controlled syringe pump. A room temperature silicon wafer is translated through the …

Tidal Hydrodynamic Response To Sea Level Rise And Coastal Geomorphology In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Davina Passeri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sea level rise (SLR) has the potential to affect coastal environments in a multitude of ways, including submergence, increased flooding, and increased shoreline erosion. Low-lying coastal environments such as the Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) are particularly vulnerable to the effects of SLR, which may have serious consequences for coastal communities as well as ecologically and economically significant estuaries. Evaluating potential changes in tidal hydrodynamics under SLR is essential for understanding impacts to navigation, ecological habitats, infrastructure and the morphologic evolution of the coastline. The intent of this research is to evaluate the dynamic effects of SLR and coastal geomorphology …

Characterization Of A Spiking Neuron Model Via A Linear Approach, Amirhossein Jabalameli Jan 2015

Characterization Of A Spiking Neuron Model Via A Linear Approach, Amirhossein Jabalameli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the past decade, characterizing spiking neuron models has been extensively researched as an essential issue in computational neuroscience. In this thesis, we examine the estimation problem of two different neuron models. In Chapter 2, We propose a modified Izhikevich model with an adaptive threshold. In our two-stage estimation approach, a linear least squares method and a linear model of the threshold are derived to predict the location of neuronal spikes. However, desired results are not obtained and the predicted model is unsuccessful in duplicating the spike locations. Chapter 3 is focused on the parameter estimation problem of a multi-timescale …

Deposition Thickness Modeling And Parameter Identification For Spray Assisted Vacuum Filtration Process In Additive Manufacturing, August Mark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To enhance mechanical and/or electrical properties of composite materials used in additive manufacturing, nanoparticles are often time deposited to form nanocomposite layers. To customize the mechanical and/or electrical properties, the thickness of such nanocomposite layers must be precisely controlled. A thickness model of filter cakes created through a spray assisted vacuum filtration is presented in this paper, to enable the development of advanced thickness controllers. The mass transfer dynamics in the spray atomization and vacuum filtration are studied for the mass of solid particles and mass of water in differential areas, and then the thickness of a filter cake is …

Combustion Kinetics Of Advanced Biofuels, Ghazal Barari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Use of biofuels, especially in automotive applications, is a growing trend due to their potential to lower greenhouse gas emissions from combustion. Ketones are a class of biofuel candidates which are produced from cellulose. However, ketones received rather scarce attention from the combustion community compared to other classes such as, alcohols, esters, and ethers. There is little knowledge on their combustion performance and pollutant generation. Hence their combustion chemistry needs to be investigated in detail. Diisopropyl ketone (DIPK) is a promising biofuel candidate, which is produced using endophytic fungal conversion. A detailed understanding of the combustion kinetics of the oxidation …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wireless surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors offer unique advantages over other sensor technologies because of their inherent ability to operate in harsh environments and completely passive operation, providing a reliable, maintenance-free life cycle. For certain SAW sensor applications the challenge is building a wirelessly interrogatable device with the same lifetime as the SAW substrate. The design of these application intensive sensors is complicated by the degradation of device bond wires, die adhesive, and antenna substrate. In an effort to maximize the benefits of the platform, this dissertation demonstrates wafer-level integrated SAW sensors that directly connect the thin film SAW to …

Large Eddy Simulations With A Tabulated Conditional Moment Closure Moment Closure Model For Turbulent Premixed Combustion With Heat Loss, Carlos Velez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Tabulated Premixed Conditional Moment Closure (T-PCMC) method has been shown to provide the capability to predict turbulent, premixed methane flames with detailed chemistry and reasonable run times in a RANS/URANS adiabatic environment. Here the premixed T-PCMC method is extended in a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) framework for non-adiabatic premixed flames, allowing heat loss to occur in the mixture before, during and after combustion. It is proposed that the LES framework is a more suitable representation for both chemical and turbulent scales in premixed combustion. By resolving the high energy turbulent scales and modeling the small scale turbulence, it is …

Coalescence-Induced Jumping Of Droplet: Inertia And Viscosity Effects, Samaneh Farokhirad, Jeffrey F. Morris, Taehun Lee Jan 2015

Coalescence-Induced Jumping Of Droplet: Inertia And Viscosity Effects, Samaneh Farokhirad, Jeffrey F. Morris, Taehun Lee

Publications and Research

The problem of coalescence-induced self-propelled jumping of droplet is studied using three-dimensional numerical simulation. The focus is on the effect of inertia and in particular the effect of air density on the behavior of the merged droplet during jumping. A lattice Boltzmann method is used for two identical, static micro-droplets coalescing on a homogeneous substrate with contact angle ranging from 0◦ to 180◦. The results reveal that the effect of air density is significant on detachment of the merged droplet from the substrate at the later stage of the jumping process; the larger the air density, the larger the jumping …

Reliability Analysis And Optimal Maintenance Planning For Repairable Multi-Component Systems Subject To Dependent Competing Risks, Nailong Zhang Jan 2015

Reliability Analysis And Optimal Maintenance Planning For Repairable Multi-Component Systems Subject To Dependent Competing Risks, Nailong Zhang

Wayne State University Dissertations

Modern engineering systems generally consist of multiple components that interact in a complex manner. Reliability analysis of multi-component repairable systems plays a critical role for system safety and cost reduction. Establishing reliability models and scheduling optimal maintenance plans for multi-component repairable systems, however, is still a big challenge when considering the dependency of component failures. Existing models commonly make prior assumptions, without statistical verification, as to whether different component failures are independent or not. In this dissertation, data-driven systematic methodologies to characterize component failure dependency of complex systems are proposed. In CHAPTER 2, a parametric reliability model is proposed to …

Flow, Spray Pattern, And Droplet Spectra Characteristics Of An Electronically Actuated Variable-Orifice Nozzle, Joe D. Luck, Santosh Pitla, M. P. Sama, S. A. Shearer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the flow rate, spray pattern, and droplet spectra characteristics of an actively controlled variable-orifice nozzle at constant carrier pressures. A commercially available variable- orifice nozzle (VariTarget) was modified to allow for direct electromechanical control of the metering stem. The modified system was tested at five carrier pressures ranging from 138 to 414 kPa and five metering stem (and thus orifice) positions. The metering stem position range was chosen because it provided a linear response in flow rate at each carrier pressure. Flow rate testing indicated a turndown ratio of 2.4:1 …

Surface Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles For Cancer Therapy Applications, Robert J. Wydra Jan 2015

Surface Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles For Cancer Therapy Applications, Robert J. Wydra

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Despite recent advances, cancer remains the second leading cause of deaths in the United States. Magnetic nanoparticles have found various applications in cancer research as drug delivery platforms, enhanced contrast agents for improved diagnostic imaging, and the delivery of thermal energy as standalone therapy. Iron oxide nanoparticles absorb the energy from an alternating magnetic field and convert it into heat through Brownian and Neel relaxations. To better utilize magnetic nanoparticles for cancer therapy, surface functionalization is essential for such factors as decreasing cytotoxicity of healthy tissue, extending circulation time, specific targeting of cancer cells, and manage the controlled delivery of …

Biomimetic Oral Mucin From Polymer Micelle Networks, Sundar Prasanth Authimoolam Jan 2015

Biomimetic Oral Mucin From Polymer Micelle Networks, Sundar Prasanth Authimoolam

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Mucin networks are formed by the complexation of bottlebrush-like mucin glycoprotein with other small molecule glycoproteins. These glycoproteins create nanoscale strands that then arrange into a nanoporous mesh. These networks play an important role in ensuring surface hydration, lubricity and barrier protection. In order to understand the functional behavior in mucin networks, it is important to decouple their chemical and physical effects responsible for generating the fundamental property-function relationship. To achieve this goal, we propose to develop a synthetic biomimetic mucin using a layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition approach. In this work, a hierarchical 3-dimensional structures resembling natural mucin networks was generated …

Cameron Decomposition Applied To Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Signature Detection, Sean Wininger Jan 2015

Cameron Decomposition Applied To Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Signature Detection, Sean Wininger

Theses and Dissertations

Cameron et al, have developed a method of decomposing scatterer scattering matrices based on Huynen’s scattering matrix decomposition parameters. Huynen’s decomposition parameters are not unique, in that certain transformation properties, such as the angle of symmetry itself, may misidentify a scattering matriix and therefore misidentify a particular geometric shape. Cameron decomposition derives these parameters by direct calculations from the scatterer itself so that they may not be inferred or interpreted. A detailed explanation of the foundations and method of Cameron decomposition is presented here. A description of how Cameron decomposition is implemented in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) signature detection …

Quantification Of The Effect Of Tool Geometric Features On Aspects Of Friction Stir Welding, Md. Reza-E-Rabby Jan 2015

Quantification Of The Effect Of Tool Geometric Features On Aspects Of Friction Stir Welding, Md. Reza-E-Rabby

Theses and Dissertations

In the friction stir welding (FSW) process, tool stirring and synchronized movement of the weld materials along a pre-existing seam line causes thermal gradients and severe plastic deformation resulting in the bonding of the adjacent materials. For a given set of welding parameters, tool pin geometries (dimensions, shape) and vertical/helical features that dictate the material motion also have significant effects on process response variables during FSW. Among the primary process controlling parameters in FSW, tool pin geometry and feature vary multifariously in terms of shape, dimensions, feature insertion technique depending on the weld material and application of joint. The current …
