Computation Of Hypersonic Flows With Lateral Jets Using K-Ω Turbulence Model, Spatika Dasharati Iyengar

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Thermal Protection systems (TPS) are used as shields in space vehicles which encounter high heat and temperatures at the reentry altitudes. Among them, the cooling techniques and the ablative coatings are most popular. However, they have their own weight limitations. In the recent decade, another classification of TPS called the Non-Ablative Thermal Protection systems (NaTPS) have gained significance. The spike-lateral jet method is an NaTPS concept proposed for drag and heat flux reduction in hypersonic nose cones. Numerical simulations are conducted to analyze the effectiveness of spike-lateral jet concept at re-entry altitudes. The spike attached to the hemispherical nose has …

Modified Polysulfone Nanofiltration Membrane Synthesis For Hydraulic Fracturing Water Recycle, Blake Alexander Johnson Dec 2015

Modified Polysulfone Nanofiltration Membrane Synthesis For Hydraulic Fracturing Water Recycle, Blake Alexander Johnson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of hydraulic fracturing has resulted in significant increases in the yield of oil and natural gas, as water pumped into wells at high pressure cracks the formations and releases the hydrocarbons that are locked in the rocks. This process has created large volumes of brackish water that is very difficult to process and is often disposed of into injection wells. Suspended solids and some dissolved solids are more readily removed, but the multivalent ions found in certain salts can precipitate in a well and complicate the reuse of flowback in future hydraulic fracturing operations.

Nanofiltration, a membrane separation …

Computational Capacity And Energy Consumption Of Complex Resistive Switch Networks, Jens Bürger, Alireza Goudarzi, Darko Stefanovic, Christof Teuscher

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Resistive switches are a class of emerging nanoelectronics devices that exhibit a wide variety of switching characteristics closely resembling behaviors of biological synapses. Assembled into random networks, such resistive switches produce emerging behaviors far more complex than that of individual devices. This was previously demonstrated in simulations that exploit information processing within these random networks to solve tasks that require nonlinear computation as well as memory. Physical assemblies of such networks manifest complex spatial structures and basic processing capabilities often related to biologically-inspired computing. We model and simulate random resistive switch networks and analyze their computational capacities. We provide a …

Fundamentals Of Microlayer Evaporation And Its Role On Boiling Heat Transfer Enhancement, An Zou Dec 2015

Fundamentals Of Microlayer Evaporation And Its Role On Boiling Heat Transfer Enhancement, An Zou

Dissertations - ALL

Boiling, a dynamic and multiscale process, is widely used in industrial applications as it can transfer a large amount of heat over a small surface area. It has been studied for over five decades; however, a comprehensive understanding of the process is still lacking. The bubble ebullition cycle (nucleation, growth and departure) happens over a very short time-span (milliseconds) making it challenging to study the near-surface interfacial characteristics of a single bubble, which involves a microlayer. The microlayer is a thin film present at the bubble base and varies from nano-scale to micro-scale in thickness. The dynamics of the microlayer …

Structure, Dynamics And Rheology Of Polymer Solutions From Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics: Effects Of Polymer Concentration, Solvent Quality And Geometric Confinement, Yutian Yang

Dissertations - ALL

Understanding flow-microstructure interactions in macromolecular fluids is of great

importance in the design and optimization of ubiquitous polymer processing operations.

Further, such interactions are routinely encountered in separation of biopolymer mixtures

using gel electrophoresis and microfluidic technologies, manufacturing of polymer-based

functional nanocomposites and polymer-induced reduction in turbulent friction drag. To

date, the vast amount of theoretical/computational modeling efforts on flowmicrostructure

coupling has focused on continuum-level and stochastic descriptions.

Such approaches, while useful in qualitatively predicting polymer dynamics and rheology

in model systems, are incapable of describing the effects of polymer-solvent, polymerpolymer

and polymer-wall interactions. Further, in the context of polymer …
