Attachment Of A Combination Bridge Rail To Concrete Parapet Utilizing Epoxy Adhesive Anchors, Robert W. Bielenberg, John D. Reid, Scott K. Rosenbaugh, Austin J. Haase, Ronald K. Faller

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IaDOT) was interested in investigating the use of epoxy adhesive anchorages

for the attachment of posts used in the BR27C combination bridge rail system. Alternative anchorage concepts were developed using a modified version of the ACI 318-11 procedures for embedded anchor design. Four design concepts were developed for review by IaDOT, including: (1) a four-bolt square anchorage, (2) a four-bolt spread anchorage, (3) a two- bolt centered anchorage, and (4) a two-bolt offset anchorage. IaDOT representatives selected the four-bolt spread anchorage and the two-bolt offset anchorage as the preferred designs for evaluation. In addition to …

Unsteady Physics And Aeroelastic Response Of Streamwise Vortex-Surface Interactions, Caleb J. Barnes Jan 2015

Unsteady Physics And Aeroelastic Response Of Streamwise Vortex-Surface Interactions, Caleb J. Barnes

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Streamwise vortex-surface interactions can occur in aviation intentionally in the context of formation flight as an energy saving mechanism, unintentionally in wake crossings when aircraft fly in close proximity, and as a consequence of aircraft design through the interaction of fluid dynamics between different aerodynamic surfaces. The bulk of past work on streamwise vortex-surface interactions has focused on steady inviscid analysis for optimizing aerodynamic loads in the context of formation flight or experimental analysis on fin buffeting problems. A fundamental understanding of the viscous and unsteady effects that may occur is both important and currently lacking in the literature. This …

New Energy Efficient Routing Algorithm For Wireless Sensor Network, Hiu Fai Chan, Heiko Rudolph Jan 2015

New Energy Efficient Routing Algorithm For Wireless Sensor Network, Hiu Fai Chan, Heiko Rudolph

Staff Publications

Energy efficiency is the most challenging topic in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Because of the increasing demands of various applications, and the constraints of energy, memory and computational power of the WSN nodes, many studies have focused on these areas in recent years. Researchers have proposed a variety of protocols such as LEACH, PEGASIS, HEED, TEEN, etc.

In this paper, we will discuss how energy efficiency is affected by scaling, i.e. different network sizes, and by different routing algorithms. With the increasing applications of large scale WSNs, such as smart grid and environmental monitoring. We will propose a new routing …

Innovative Self-Organization Wireless Sensor Networks For Electrical Power Systems, Hiu Fai Chan, Heiko Rudolph Jan 2015

Innovative Self-Organization Wireless Sensor Networks For Electrical Power Systems, Hiu Fai Chan, Heiko Rudolph

Staff Publications

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) gather information for electrical power systems and help to manage demand Response and demand side strategies. Optimization of WSNs depends on their physical deployment, and it will bring to the fore a very focused number of parameters to be optimized. Selforganization of WSNs is an important issue to be considered, and it requires the nodes to form a network by collaboration with each other without using manual intervention. Moreover, the WSNs implemented in electrical power systems should be secured and energy efficient in order to provide highly reliable data for monitoring and control.

3d Fatigue From Stereoscopic 3d Video Displays: Comparing Objective And Subjective Tests Using Electroencephalography, Siu Ming, Vincent Choy, Kwok-Ho Chiu, Eva Cheng, Ian Burnett

Staff Publications

The use of stereoscopic display has increased in recent times, with a growing range of applications using 3D videos for visual entertainment, data visualization, and medical applications. However, stereoscopic 3D video can lead to adverse reactions amongst some viewers, including visual fatigue, headache and nausea; such reactions can further lead to Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS). Whilst motion sickness symptoms can occur from other types of visual displays, this paper investigates the rapid adjustment triggered by human pupils as a potential cause of 3D fatigue due to VIMS from stereoscopic 3D displays. Using Electroencephalogram (EEG) biosignals and eye blink tools …

The Myth And The Meaning Of Science As A Vocation, Adam Liska Jan 2015

The Myth And The Meaning Of Science As A Vocation, Adam Liska

Adam Liska Papers

Many natural scientists of the past and the present have imagined that they pursued their activity according to its own inherent rules in a realm distinctly separate from the business world, or at least in a realm where business tended to interfere with science from time to time, but was not ultimately an essential component, ‘because one thought that in science one possessed and loved something unselfish, harmless, self-sufficient, and truly innocent, in which man’s evil impulses had no part whatever’, as Nietzsche once commented (Nietzsche 1974, p.106). With the extreme technological changes that have occurred in the last fifty …

A Discrete-Time Direct-Torque Control For Direct-Drive Pmsg-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems, Zhe Zhang, Yue Zhao, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu Jan 2015

A Discrete-Time Direct-Torque Control For Direct-Drive Pmsg-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems, Zhe Zhang, Yue Zhao, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a novel flux space vector-based direct-torque control (DTC) scheme for permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) used in variable-speed direct drive wind energy conversion systems (WECSs). The discrete time control law, which is derived from the perspective of flux space vectors and load angle, predicts the desired stator flux vector for the next time-step with the torque and stator flux information only. The space-vector modulation (SVM) is then employed to generate the reference voltage vector, leading to a fixed switching frequency as well as lower flux and torque ripples when compared to the conventional DTC. Compared with other …

Femtosecond Laser Induced Tunable Surface Transformations On (111) Si Aided By Square Grids Diffraction, Weina Han, Lan Jiang, Xiaowei Li, Yang Liu, Yongfeng Lu Jan 2015

Femtosecond Laser Induced Tunable Surface Transformations On (111) Si Aided By Square Grids Diffraction, Weina Han, Lan Jiang, Xiaowei Li, Yang Liu, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We report an extra freedom to modulate the femtosecond laser energy distribution to control the surface ablated structures through a copper-grid mask. Due to the reduced deposited pulse energy by changing the scanning speed or the pulse fluence, a sequential evolution of three distinctly different surface patterns with periodic distributions is formed, namely, striped ripple lines, ripple microdots, and surface modification. By changing the scanning speed, the number of the multiple dots in a lattice can be modulated. Moreover, by exploring the ablation process through the copper grid mask, it shows an abnormal enhanced ablation effect with strong dependence of …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Optical cavities with multiple tunable resonances have the potential to provide unique electromagnetic environments at two or more distinct wavelengthscritical for control of optical processes such as nonlinear generation, entangled photon generation, or photoluminescence (PL) enhancement. Here, we show a plasmonic nanocavity based on a nanopatch antenna design that has two tunable resonant modes in the visible spectrum separated by 350 nm and with line widths of ∼60 nm. The importance of utilizing two resonances simultaneously is demonstrated by integrating monolayer MoS2, a two-dimensional semiconductor, into the colloidally synthesized nanocavities. We observe a 2000-fold enhancement in the PL intensity of …

Skin Effect Mitigation In Laser Processed Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Copper Conductors, K. Keramatnejad, Y. S. Zhou, Y. Gao, H. Rabiee Golgir, M. Wang, L. Jiang, J.F. Silvain, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this study, laser-processed multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/Cu conductors are introduced as potential passive components to mitigate the skin effect of Cu at high frequencies (0–10 MHz). Suppressed skin effect is observed in the MWCNT/Cu conductors compared to primitive Cu. At an AC frequency of 10 MHz, a maximum AC resistance reduction of 94% was observed in a MWCNT/Cu conductor after being irradiated at a laser power density of 189 W/cm2. The reduced skin effect in the MWCNT/Cu conductors is ascribed to the presence of MWCNT channels which are insensitive to AC frequencies. The laser irradiation process is observed to …

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of An Intensity-Demodulated Fiber-Ring-Laser Ultrasonic Sensor System, G. Liu, Elliott Sandfort, Lingling Hu, Tongqing Liu, Ming Han

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the performance of an ultrasound detection system based on a fiber ring laser (FRL) whose cavity includes a pair of fiber Bragg gratings. The ultrasonic detection is achieved by the FRL power variations in response to the ultrasound-induced cold-cavity loss modulation of the FRL. The effects of key FRL parameters, including pump power, laser cold-cavity loss, and laser cavity length, on the system signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance have been investigated. It is found that the maximum SNR is achieved when the frequency of the ultrasound is the same as that of the FRL relaxation oscillation …

Fiber-Optic Refractometer Based On A Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating On A Side-Hole Fiber, Qi Zhang, Lingling Hu, Yuefeng Qi, G. Liu, Natale J. Ianno, Ming Han Jan 2015

Fiber-Optic Refractometer Based On A Phase-Shifted Fiber Bragg Grating On A Side-Hole Fiber, Qi Zhang, Lingling Hu, Yuefeng Qi, G. Liu, Natale J. Ianno, Ming Han

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

A fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on a π-phaseshifted fiber-Bragg-grating (πFBG) inscribed on a side-hole fiber is presented. The reflection spectrum of the πFBG features two narrow notches associated with the two polarization modes and the spectral spacing of the notches is used for high-sensitivity RI sensing with little temperature cross-sensitivity. The side-hole fiber maintains its outer diameter and mechanical strength. The side-hole fiber is also naturally integrated into a microfluidic system for convenient sample delivery and reduced sample amount. A novel demodulation method based on laser frequency modulation to enhance the sensor dynamic range is proposed and demonstrated.

Propane Dehydrogenation On Single Site Gallium On Silica Catalyst, Shankali U. Pradhan

Open Access Theses

Light alkane dehydrogenation is gaining increasing importance due to the discovery of shale gas. Gallium based catalysts such as Ga/HZSM-3 and Ga2O3 have been used to dehydrogenate propane to propylene. However, the exact nature of the active site for propane dehydrogenation on Gallium based catalysts is still debated in literature. This work is aimed at understanding the nature of active site in Ga/SiO2 catalyst for propane dehydrogenation. The Ga/SiO2 catalyst is active and selective for propane dehydrogenation reaction. It is shown that Ga +3 site co-ordinated with four O atoms is the most active form …

Biomechanical And Biological Evaluation Of A Model Of Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis Following Noninvasive, Traumatic Rupture Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament, Tristan Maerz Jan 2015

Biomechanical And Biological Evaluation Of A Model Of Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis Following Noninvasive, Traumatic Rupture Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament, Tristan Maerz

Wayne State University Dissertations

Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a prevalent condition following rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). While numerous animal models of PTOA exist, most are based on surgical disruption of a stabilizing structure. In the rat, surgical ACL transection is the most commonly employed model, but it may introduce confounding biological factors due to surgery. The purpose of this dissertation was to utilize the tibial compression model of ACL injury to induce a noninvasive ACL rupture in the rat. First, a biomechanical characterization of four different loading protocols was undertaken, and a high-speed, high-displacement protocol was deemed optimal for inducing a …

Multiplexed Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Of The 16s Rrna Gene For The Diagnosis Of Neonatal Sepsis In Resource-Limited Environments, Griffin T. Sonaty Jan 2015

Multiplexed Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Of The 16s Rrna Gene For The Diagnosis Of Neonatal Sepsis In Resource-Limited Environments, Griffin T. Sonaty

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Sepsis, or dysregulated inflammation caused by bacterial infection, places a disproportionately high burden on newborns in developing countries. This is due in part to a lack of diagnostic tools suitable for sustainable use in resource-limited nurseries. One potential vehicle for a new diagnostic assay is loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), a high-yield DNA amplification method. LAMP has previously been used to detect genes from single species of bacteria in blood serum samples to aid in sepsis diagnosis. LAMP could be adapted to detect a broad set of bacteria, while retaining a degree of specificity that allows clinicians to begin directed antimicrobial …

Long-Term Functionality Of Rural Water Services In Developing Countries: A System Dynamics Approach To Understanding The Dynamic Interaction Of Causal Factors, Jeffrey P. Walters, Amy N. Javernick-Will Jan 2015

Long-Term Functionality Of Rural Water Services In Developing Countries: A System Dynamics Approach To Understanding The Dynamic Interaction Of Causal Factors, Jeffrey P. Walters, Amy N. Javernick-Will

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Research has shown that sustainability of rural water infrastructure in developing countries is largely affected by the dynamic and systemic interactions of technical, social, financial, institutional, and environmental factors that can lead to premature water system failure. This research employs systems dynamic modeling, which uses feedback mechanisms to understand how these factors interact dynamically to influence long-term rural water system functionality. To do this, the research first identified and aggregated key factors from literature, then asked water sector experts to indicate the polarity and strength between factors through Delphi and cross impact survey questionnaires, and finally used system dynamics modeling …

Minimax Portfolio Optimization Under Interval Uncertainty, Meng Yuan, Xu Lin, Junzo Watada, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2015

Minimax Portfolio Optimization Under Interval Uncertainty, Meng Yuan, Xu Lin, Junzo Watada, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the 1950s, Markowitz proposed to combine different investment instruments to design a portfolio that either maximizes the expected return under constraints on volatility (risk) or minimizes the risk under given expected return. Markowitz's formulas are still widely used in financial practice. However, these formulas assume that we know the exact values of expected return and variance for each instrument, and that we know the exact covariance of every two instruments. In practice, we only know these values with some uncertainty. Often, we only know the bounds of these values -- i.e., in other words, we only know the intervals …

Constraint Approach To Multi-Objective Optimization, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2015

Constraint Approach To Multi-Objective Optimization, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we would like to maximize (or minimize) several different criteria, and it is not clear how much weight to assign to each of these criteria. Such situations are ubiquitous and thus, it is important to be able to solve the corresponding multi-objective optimization problems. There exist many heuristic methods for solving such problems. In this paper, we reformulate multi-objective optimization as a constraint satisfaction problem, and we show that this reformulation explains two widely use multi-objective optimization techniques: optimizing a weighted sum of the objective functions and optimizing the product of normalized values of these functions.

On The Integration Of Interest And Power Awareness In Social-Aware Opportunistic Forwarding Algorithms, Soumaia Al Ayyat Jan 2015

On The Integration Of Interest And Power Awareness In Social-Aware Opportunistic Forwarding Algorithms, Soumaia Al Ayyat

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

Social-aware Opportunistic forwarding algorithms are much needed in environments which lack network infrastructure or in those that are susceptible to frequent disruptions. However, most of these algorithms are oblivious to both the user’s interest in the forwarded content and the limited power resources of the available mobile nodes. This paper proposes PI-SOFA, a framework for integrating the awareness of both interest and power capability of a candidate node within the forwarding decision process. Furthermore, the framework adapts its forwarding decisions to the expected contact duration between message carriers and candidate nodes. The proposed framework is applied to three state-of-the-art social-aware …
