Background

Neurobehavioral disabilities occur in 5–15 % of preterm infants with an estimated 50–70 % of very low birth weight preterm infants experiencing later dysfunction, including cognitive, behavioral, and social delays that often persist into adulthood. Factors implicated in poor neurobehavioral and developmental outcomes are hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and inconsistent caregiving patterns. Although much underlying brain damage occurs in utero or shortly after birth, neuroprotective strategies can stop lesions from progressing, particularly when these strategies are used during the most sensitive periods of neural plasticity occurring months before term age. The purpose of this randomized …

Reversible Strain-Induced Magnetization Switching In Fega Nanomagnets: Pathway To A Rewritable, Non-Volatile, Non-Toggle, Extremely Low Energy Straintronic Memory, Hasnain Ahmad, Jayasimha Atulasimha, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay Jan 2015

Reversible Strain-Induced Magnetization Switching In Fega Nanomagnets: Pathway To A Rewritable, Non-Volatile, Non-Toggle, Extremely Low Energy Straintronic Memory, Hasnain Ahmad, Jayasimha Atulasimha, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

We report reversible strain-induced magnetization switching between two stable/metastable states in ~300 nm sized FeGa nanomagnets delineated on a piezoelectric PMN-PT substrate. Voltage of one polarity applied across the substrate generates compressive strain in a nanomagnet and switches its magnetization to one state, while voltage of the opposite polarity generates tensile strain and switches the magnetization back to the original state. The two states can encode the two binary bits, and, using the right voltage polarity, one can write either bit deterministically. This portends an ultra-energy-efficient non-volatile “non-toggle” memory.

Easy Distributed Grid Architecture For Research: Easy Access To Supercomputing, Brent Wilson

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Current distributed systems present many challenges for students who may not be very skilled at programming parallel applications for use on such systems. Grid computing is a cost effective means of providing supercomputing computation for both scientists and students of computing. Easy Distributed Grid Architecture for Research (EDGAR) is a grid computing solution that meets two critical constraints, namely ease of application programming for users and platform independence in implementation. Satisfying these two constraints makes EDGAR one of the only time and cost effective grid computing solutions. EDGAR creates an easy of use high performance solution for scientists and students …

Intelligent Control Of Miniature Holonomic Vertical Take-Off And Landing Robot, Mohammad A. Jaradata, Mohamed Al-Fandia, Omar Alkhatiba, Yousef Sardahi Jan 2015

Intelligent Control Of Miniature Holonomic Vertical Take-Off And Landing Robot, Mohammad A. Jaradata, Mohamed Al-Fandia, Omar Alkhatiba, Yousef Sardahi

All Engineering Faculty Research

This paper discusses the development of a fuzzy based controller for miniaturized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).This controller is designed to control the center-of-gravity (CoG) in a new configuration of coaxial miniaturized flying robot (MFR). The idea is to shift the CoG by controlling two pendulums located in perpendicular directions; each pendulum ends with a small mass. A key feature of this work is that the control algorithm represents the original nonlinear function that describes the dynamics of the proposed system. The controller model incorporates two cascaded subsystems: PD and PI fuzzy logic controllers. These two controllers regulate the attitude and …

Comprehensive Understanding Of Nano-Sized Particle Separation Processes Using Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis, Desmond F. Lawler, Sungmin Youn, Tongren Zhu, Ijung Kim, Boris L.T. Lau Jan 2015

Comprehensive Understanding Of Nano-Sized Particle Separation Processes Using Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis, Desmond F. Lawler, Sungmin Youn, Tongren Zhu, Ijung Kim, Boris L.T. Lau

All Engineering Faculty Research

Understanding of nano-sized particle separation processes has been limited by difficulties of nanoparticle characterization. In this study, nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) was deployed to evaluate the absolute particle size distributions in laboratory scale flocculation and filtration experiments with silver nanoparticles. The results from NTA were consistent with standard theories of particle destabilization and transport. Direct observations of changes in absolute particle size distributions from NTA enhance both qualitative and quantitative understanding of particle separation processes of nano-sized particles.

Amorphous Carbon Hard Mask For Multiple Patterning Lithography, Timothy D. Horn Jan 2015

Amorphous Carbon Hard Mask For Multiple Patterning Lithography, Timothy D. Horn

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Amorphous carbon may be used as a hard mask alternative to nitride in conjunction with multiple patterning lithography and line-width trimming applications. This work focuses on the simulation and deposition for optical optimization of a carbon hard mask using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). By creating a central composite design centered about pressure, power, and gas flow and analyzing the results, it was found that the optical parameters were dependent primarily on power and chamber pressure while the deposition rate varied with all three parameters. This film can enable sublithographic patterning of lines approaching 100 nm using an i-line …

Electro-Static-Discharge (Esd) Protection In Touch And Display Driver Integrated (Tddi) Systems, Stefan Wojick Jan 2015

Electro-Static-Discharge (Esd) Protection In Touch And Display Driver Integrated (Tddi) Systems, Stefan Wojick

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

This project evaluated the implications of system level electro-static discharge (ESD) on a touch and display driver integrated (TDDI) architecture component. Due to the components unique location in the system, typical component level ESD standards (JEDEC Human Body Model and Charged Device Model) were unable to adequately represent the ESD stresses seen by the integrated circuit (IC) during system level ESD testing (IEC 61000-4-2). An alternative stimulus, transmission line pulse (TLP), has been purposed as a better metric to model the devices performance under system level ESD testing and ESD devices were optimized to this stimulus.

Exploration Of Directed Self Assembly Polymers, Paul Bischoff, Thomas Smith, Robert Pearson, Dale Ewbank Jan 2015

Exploration Of Directed Self Assembly Polymers, Paul Bischoff, Thomas Smith, Robert Pearson, Dale Ewbank

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Directed Self Assembly (DSA) is an attractive alternative to 193i and multiple patterning. Various polymers were investigated to find the possible structures that can be created with them. Previous research was used to determine the process used. Two surface treatments, a polymer brush and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) were used to help the polymers phase separate into their respective structure. The first polymer a polystyrene (PS) block polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) resulted in de-wetting and film non-uniformity that prevented measurement. The second polymer a PS block polyethylene oxide (PEO) resulted in crystallization if the PEO ratio was too high at 40% mole. When the …

Ferroelectric Hafnium Dioxide Thin Films, Jackson D. Anderson Jan 2015

Ferroelectric Hafnium Dioxide Thin Films, Jackson D. Anderson

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Ferroelectric memory shows great promise as a high speed alternative to conventional memory architectures. Traditionally this memory has been constrained to niche applications duetothelargesizeofceramic-basedferroelectricdevices.Doped hafnium dioxide measured on a newly-acquired aixACCT TF Analyzer 1000 is shown to have ferroelectricity an order of magnitude stronger than discrete PZT films that were measured, enabling further scaling while also simplifying fabrication via the elimination of ceramics from the process flow. Additionally, the presence of a TiN capping layer as well as a lower temperature, long duration anneal are shown to be key in obtaining a potential ferroelectric phase in hafnium dioxide.
