Supervised Machine Learning For Classification Of The Electrophysiological Effects Of Chronotropic Drugs On Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes, Christopher Heylman, Rupsa Datta, Agua Sobrino, Steven George, Enrico Gratton
Biomedical Engineering
Supervised machine learning can be used to predict which drugs human cardiomyocytes have been exposed to. Using electrophysiological data collected from human cardiomyocytes with known exposure to different drugs, a supervised machine learning algorithm can be trained to recognize and classify cells that have been exposed to an unknown drug. Furthermore, the learning algorithm provides information on the relative contribution of each data parameter to the overall classification. Probabilities and confidence in the accuracy of each classification may also be determined by the algorithm. In this study, the electrophysiological effects of β–adrenergic drugs, propranolol and isoproterenol, on cardiomyocytes derived from …

However, GPUs don’t perform well on every application, and it takes a lot of design effort to get good performance on a GPU.
This thesis aims to investigate the relative performance of a GPU vs. CPU. Design effort is held minimum for both CPU implementations and GPU implementations. Matrix multiplication, Advance Encryption …
Studying The Optimum Design Of Automotive Thermoelectric Air Conditioning, Alaa Attar
Studying The Optimum Design Of Automotive Thermoelectric Air Conditioning, Alaa Attar
Dissertations
The remarkable amount of research being conducted on thermoelectrics gives the impression that this technology will have a bright future in power generation and temperature control systems. At the present time, thermoelectrics is applied widely for temperature control, but has not yet replaced conventional air-conditioning systems due to its lower performance. Currently, approximately 10% of annual vehicle fuel consumption corresponds to the air-conditioning system used to cool the vehicle cabin. Conventional air-conditioning systems cool the entire cabin; however, about 73% of a vehicle’s mileage occurs while the driver is the only occupant. These facts indicate the need for a single …

Application Of Starch-Based Nanoparticle Colloidal Dispersion In Curtain Coating, Ting Chen
Dissertations
In this research, a conventional petro-based latex was partially replaced with a biobased latex in a curtain coating. A common petro-based rheology modifier used in curtain coatings, which is relatively costly and difficult to disperse, was also replaced with two inorganic rheology modifiers. The influence of these materials on coating rheology and curtain stability was thoroughly examined.
In the rheological study, the interactions between biopolymer nanoparticles and inorganic rheology modifiers were found to improve the rheological properties of the biobased latex coatings. Changes in the rheological properties of the coatings were found to depend on the type of rheology modifier …

Development Of A Capacity Deployment Model For Disrupted Supply Chain Networks, James D. Burns
Dissertations
The increasing complexity of modern supply chains is widely accepted as one of the many drivers of risk that can leave organizations vulnerable to the effects of a disruption. This acceptance has contributed to an emerging interest in Supply Chain Resilience in the literature. Resilient supply chains are able to both resist the effects of a disruption and recover efficiently if the disruption is severe. This new body of literature is still in a formative phase and has thus far focused on defining Supply Chain Resilience, proposing frameworks for its implementation, exploring factors that contribute to resilience, and investigating methods …

Simulation Of Lateral Migration And Sedimentation Of A Flexible Fiber In A Vertical Weak Shear Flow, Ali Ibrahim Neamah Neamah
Masters Theses
This research is a thorough numerical investigation and critical analysis of lateral migration of a deformable particle settling in a vertical weak shear flow. Under the vertical weak shear fluid, the deformable particle may move either to the coagulation area, or the dispersion area, depending on Reynolds numbers, shear Reynolds number, fiber flexibility, and aspect ratio. In this study, a lattice Boltzmann equation is used to solve Navier-Stokes equation and a flexible particle method is employed to attack the problem of motion of a flexible fiber. A bounce-back rule is used to deal with moving boundaries interacting with fluids. Several …

A Parabolized Navier-Stokes Method For Wind Farm Applications, Anshul Mittal
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Fluid flow simulations play an important role in the wind industry. With the development of large wind farms, flow simulations through an entire wind farm are becoming a necessity. These are required for designing the layout of new wind farms in the development stage and for forecasting power production from the existing ones for operational purposes. Conventional Navier-Stokes simulations (commonly referred to as CFD simulations) are computationally very expensive since they require a supercomputer with runtimes of several weeks. A Parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) method is developed and implemented in this study. The developed PNS method requires less stringent approximations as …

An Introduction To Defining Cost Estimates For Mechanical And Electrical Services Using The Nrm1, Charles Mitchell
An Introduction To Defining Cost Estimates For Mechanical And Electrical Services Using The Nrm1, Charles Mitchell
Reports
Determining an accurate value for the supply and installation of mechanical and electrical services is a difficult task due to the level of specialisation and variance within this sector of the industry. The level of specialised knowledge and the ever changing technology has prevented the Quantity Surveyor from taking a firm hold on the cost estimation of these services. Cost estimates have previously been prepared by consultant services engineers or based on costs provided by these consultants.
However, employers nowadays require more cost certainty in the estimates of costs. As a direct result the New Rules of Measurement 1 (NRM1) …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Brake and tire violations are common problems identified through commercial vehicle inspections. Identifying and correcting these types of problems before a crash occurs can produce significant safety benefits. Thermal imaging technology can be used by commercial vehicle enforcement to screen vehicles as they approach a weigh station to determine if they may have flat tires and inoperable brakes. The vehicles do not have to be stopped at a weigh station to be screened. Kentucky currently has three stations outfitted with thermal imaging technology. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the benefits of using the thermal imaging cameras to …

Methodology Update For Estimating Volume To Service Flow Ratio, Mei Chen, Xu Zhang
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Volume/service flow ratio (VSF) is calculated by the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) software as an indicator of peak hour congestion. It is an essential input to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) key planning applications, such as highway adequacy rating. After the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reassessed the HPMS, the standalone HPMS software was no longer supported. This conclusion was based on the 2000 Highway Capacity Manual (HCM2000). As a result, the peak capacity and VSF estimates based on the submittal file are no longer available to KYTC. The calculation of VSF ratios requires AADT, K factor, directional factor, and …

Viscoelastic, Fatigue Damage, And Permanent Deformation Characterization Of High Rap Bituminous Mixtures Using Fine Aggregate Matrix (Fam), Hesamaddin Nabizadeh
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Performance characteristics of bituminous mixtures play the most influential role in designing flexible pavement. These asphaltic mixtures can be considered as heterogeneous mixtures which composed of two primary components: fine aggregate matrix (FAM) phase and aggregate phase. The FAM phase acts as a critical phase in evaluating the performance characteristics including viscoelastic, fatigue damage, and permanent deformation characteristics of entire asphalt mixtures. This study evaluates the viscoelastic, fatigue damage and permanent deformation characteristics of bituminous mixtures containing 65% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) by performing oscillatory torsional shear tests of cylindrical bars of FAM using a dynamic mechanical analyzer. Moreover, this …

PHOSPHO1 is one of principal proteins involved in initiating bone matrix mineralisation. Recent studies have found that Phospho1 KO mice ( Phospho1-R74X) display multiple skeletal abnormalities with spontaneous fractures, bowed long bones, osteomalacia and scoliosis. These analyses have however been limited to young mice and it remains unclear whether the role of PHOSPHO1 is conserved in the mature murine skeleton where bone turnover is limited. In this study, we have used ex-vivo computerised tomography to examine the effect of Phospho1 deletion on tibial bone architecture in mice at a range of ages (5, 7, 16 and 34. weeks of age) …

The Harlan, Kellioka, and Darby coals in Harlan County, Kentucky, have been among the highest quality coals mined in the Central Appalachians. The Middle Pennsylvanian coals are correlative with the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 to Upper Elkhorn No. 3½ coals to the northwest of the Pine Mountain thrust fault. Much of the mining traditionally was controlled by captive, steel-company-owned mines and the coal was part of the high volatile A bituminous portion of the coking coal blend. Overall, the coals are generally low-ash and low-sulfur, contributing to their desirability as metallurgical coals. We did observe variation both in geochemistry, such …
Faster Maximium Priority Matchings In Bipartite Graphs, Jonathan Turner
Faster Maximium Priority Matchings In Bipartite Graphs, Jonathan Turner
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
A maximum priority matching is a matching in an undirected graph that maximizes a priority score defined with respect to given vertex priorities. An earlier paper showed how to find maximum priority matchings in unweighted graphs. This paper describes an algorithm for bipartite graphs that is faster when the number of distinct priority classes is limited. For graphs with k distinct priority classes it runs in O(kmn1/2) time, where n is the number of vertices in the graph and m is the number of edges.

Estimation On Gibbs Entropy For An Ensemble, Lekhya Sai Sake
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
In this world of growing technology, any small improvement in the present scenario would create a revolution. One of the popular revolutions in the computer science field is parallel computing. A single parallel execution is not sufficient to see its non-deterministic features, as same execution with the same data at different time would end up with a different path. In order to see how non deterministic a parallel execution can extend up to, creates the need of the ensemble of executions. This project implements a program to estimate the Gibbs Entropy for an ensemble of parallel executions. The goal is …

This project is part of a Master’s thesis which looks at alternative ways to measure blood glucose. The Master’s thesis uses mid-field signals in order to match impedance and therefore lose less power as they travel through flesh. The goal of this senior project is to build a receiver for those signals and give accurate RSSI (received signal strength indicator) measurements. Mid-fields were originally explored by Stanford professor Dr. Ada Poon [3] who used the signaling technique to recharge the batteries of deeply implanted devices. Devices implanted near the surface of the skin were able to have their batteries recharged …
