Y3Fe5O12-Bi2O3 composite thin films are deposited onto Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) substrates and their annealing crystallization regimes are optimized (in terms of both process temperatures and durations) to obtain high-quality thin film layers possessing magnetic properties attractive for a range of technological applications. The amount of bismuth oxide content introduced into these nanocomposite-type films is controlled by adjusting the RF power densities applied to both Y3Fe5O12 and Bi2O3 sputtering targets during the cosputtering deposition processes. The measured material properties of …

Interlocking Concrete Masonry Unit Geometry Design, Raquel Avila, Nick Jensen Jun 2015

Interlocking Concrete Masonry Unit Geometry Design, Raquel Avila, Nick Jensen

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

Earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal left many people devastated. Millions of people were initially displaced and forced to reside in displacement camps. Developing countries like these need a form of economical construction. Our design and manufacturing process for interlocking CMU (concrete masonry unit) blocks can help build low-cost homes quickly and efficiently. Wall construction costs are reduced because skilled masons are not needed to build the wall. Instead, unskilled homeowners and laborers can stack the interlocking blocks, which serve as forms for the subsequent placement of reinforcement and grout within some of the CMU block voids. Using a steel mold, …

Spatial Analysis Of Mount St. Helens Tephra Leachate Compositions: Implications For Future Sampling Strategies, P. M. Ayris, P. Delmelle, B. Pereira, E. C. Maters, D. E. Damby, A. J. Durant, D. B. Dingwell

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Tephra particles in physically and chemically evolving volcanic plumes and clouds carry soluble sulphate and halide salts to the Earth’s surface, ultimately depositing volcanogenic compounds into terrestrial or aquatic environments. Upon leaching of tephra in water, these salts dissolve rapidly. Previous studies have investigated the spatial and temporal variability of tephra leachate compositions during an eruption in order to gain insight into the mechanisms of gas-tephra interaction which emplace those salts. However, the leachate datasets analysed are typically small and may poorly represent the natural variability and complexity of tephra deposits. Here, we have conducted a retrospective analysis of published …

Understanding the Communicative and Social Processes of Engineering Ethics in Diverse Design Teams As engineering, and specifically engineering design, is increasingly understood to be asocial activity, engineering education’s understanding of ethics needs to reflect this developingawareness. Within engineering and design teams, engineering educators are concerned not onlywith how individual students develop ethically, but also how everyday ethical decision-makingemerges during team interactions and becomes integrated in design solutions. The everydayethics approach calls on engineering educators and students to pay closer attention to the natureof design, how values are embedded in design through micro decision-making processes, andhow these values are reintegrated into …

Device, Method, And Algorithm To Assess Changes In Cardiac Output Via Intracardiac Impedance Monitoring, Geoffrey Fredrick Schau Jun 2015

Device, Method, And Algorithm To Assess Changes In Cardiac Output Via Intracardiac Impedance Monitoring, Geoffrey Fredrick Schau

Dissertations and Theses

Cardiac output, the volume of blood pumped by the heart over time, is a powerful clinical metric used by physicians to assess overall cardiac health and patient well-being. However, current cardiac output estimation methods are typically invasive, time-consuming, expensive, or some combination of all three. Patients that receive artificial cardiac pacemaker devices are particularly susceptible to cardiac dysfunction and often require long-term cardiac monitoring support.

This thesis proposes a novel cardiac output monitoring solution which leverages an implantable intracardiac medical device. The principles of traditional impedance cardiography, an established cardiac output monitoring technique in practice for over fifty years, have …

Curved-Folding-Inspired Deployable Compliant Rolling-Contact Element (D-Core), Todd Nelson, Robert Lang, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

This work describes a deployable compliant rolling-contact element joint (DCORE joint) that employs curved-folding origami techniques to enable transition from a flat to deployed state. These deployable joints can be manufactured from a single sheet of material. Two fundamental configurations of the D-CORE are presented. The first configuration allows for motion similar to that of a Jacob’s ladder when the joint is in a planar state while achieving the motion of a CORE when in the deployed state. The second configuration constrains all degrees of freedom to create a static structure when the joint is in the planar state and …

Direct Structure Estimation For 3d Reconstruction, Nianjuan Jiang, Wen-Yan Lin, Minh N. Do, Jiangbo Lu Jun 2015

Direct Structure Estimation For 3d Reconstruction, Nianjuan Jiang, Wen-Yan Lin, Minh N. Do, Jiangbo Lu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most conventional structure-from-motion (SFM) techniques require camera pose estimation before computing any scene structure. In this work we show that when combined with single/multiple homography estimation, the general Euclidean rigidity constraint provides a simple formulation for scene structure recovery without explicit camera pose computation. This direct structure estimation (DSE) opens a new way to design a SFM system that reverses the order of structure and motion estimation. We show that this alternative approach works well for recovering scene structure and camera poses from sideway motion given planar or general man-made scenes.

Innovations in Managing Western Water: New Approaches for Balancing Environmental, Social and Economic Outcomes (Martz Summer Conference, June 11-12)

Many aspects of western water allocation and management are the product of independent and uncoordinated actions, several occurring a century or more ago. However, in this modern era of water scarcity, it is increasingly acknowledged that more coordinated and deliberate decision-making is necessary for effectively balancing environmental, social, and economic objectives. In recent years, a variety of forums, processes, and tools have emerged to better manage the connections between regions, sectors, and publics linked by shared water systems. In this event, we explore the cutting edge efforts, the latest points of contention, and the opportunities for further progress.

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering Senior Theses

This project focuses on the need for collaboration and unification among faculty and students in the engineering department. As it stands, the engineering department has three buildings that are not connected. This causes students and faculty of different studies to be handcuffed. Engineering is a collaborated field, that requires like minded people to come up with solutions. This is why the design team decided to implement a pedestrian bridge that would allow rapid access to both engineering buildings. The project team completed structural and construction elements for a pedestrian bridge that connects two buildings in the SCU engineering quad. This …

Morphology And Magnetic Properties Of Sulfonated Poly[Styrene-(Ethylene/Butylene)-Styrene]/Iron Oxide Composites, Sateesh K. Peddini, Huy N. Pham, Leonard Spinu, James L. Weston, David E. Nikles, Kenneth A. Mauritz

Faculty Publications

α-Fe2O3 structures were initiated in the sulfonated polystyrene block domains of poly[styrene–(ethylene/butylene)–styrene] (SEBS) block copolymers via a domain-targeted in-situ chemical precipitation method. The crystal structure of these particles was determined using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). TEM revealed that for less sulfonated SEBS (10 mole%), nanoparticles were aggregated with aggregate size range of 100–150 nm whereas for high sulfonation (16 and 20 mole% sSEBS) there were needle-like structures with length and width of 200–250 nm and 50 nm, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analyses suggest that initial iron oxide nanoparticle …

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) enable a range of applications such as data transmission, trace sensing, atomic clocks, and optical mice. For many of these applications, the output power and beam quality are both critical (i.e. high output power with good beam quality is desired). Multi-mode VCSELs offer much higher power than single-mode devices, but this comes at the expense of lower beam quality. Directly observing the resolved mode structure of multi-mode VCSELs would enable engineers to better understand the underlying physics and help them to develop multi-mode devices with improved beam quality. In this work, a low-cost, high-resolution (<3 >pm) …
