Effects Of Various Extrapolation Techniques For Abbreviated Dynamic Modulus Test Data On The Mepdg Rutting Predictions, Minkyum Kim, Louay N. Mohammad, Mostafa A. Elseifi
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Abbreviated dynamic modulus test protocols have been used to reduce the time and cost of running the test for routine uses. The abbreviated test results can then be extrapolated to estimate the complete array of the dynamic modulus values required for the Level 1 MEPDG analysis. Multiple approaches are available for the extrapolation depending on a master curve and shift factor functions chosen. The objective of this study was to identify the best practice of extrapolating the abbreviated dynamic modulus data by evaluating the accuracy of performance predictions through MEPDG pavement analysis. Two common sigmoid functional forms (i.e., the MEPDG …

Preliminary Study On The Correlation Between Two-Dimension Surface Texture And Friction, Shih-Huang Chen, Kuan-Lun Hsu, Pei Liu, Hung-Wen Chung
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The friction of pavement is mainly determined by the microtexture of the surface layer. However, the finer degree of microtexture makes it impossible to observe with naked eye. The object of this study was to develop a High Definition Scan Texture Machine (HDSTM) with 2D Laser CCD to support previous research on the correlation between texture and friction. In addition, this study proposed seven different parameters and sought to find an index for an ideal correlation that could represent the entire pavement texture. By assessing the test results, the Segment of Average Profile Depth (SAPD) was selected as the texture …

The results yielded a specific gravity of 2.21, aggregate absorption of 9.6%, and a fineness modulus of 3.2. The WMSWIBS's toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) values were much lower than the limit specified by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA, Taiwan), and its …
Time-Variant Load Models Of Electric Vehicle Chargers, Nicole P. Zimmerman
Time-Variant Load Models Of Electric Vehicle Chargers, Nicole P. Zimmerman
Dissertations and Theses
In power distribution system planning, it is essential to understand the impacts that electric vehicles (EVs), and the non-linear, time-variant loading profiles associated with their charging units, may have on power distribution networks. This research presents a design methodology for the creation of both analytical and behavioral models for EV charging units within a VHDL-AMS simulation environment.
Voltage and current data collected from Electric Avenue, located on the Portland State University campus, were used to create harmonic profiles of the EV charging units at the site. From these profiles, generalized models for both single-phase (Level 2) and three-phase (Level 3) …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Point-based rut bar systems are commonly used by transportation agencies. However, potential measurement errors exist in these systems because of the limited number of sample points (e.g. 3 to 31 points). Now, advanced sensing technology can acquire high-resolution transverse profiles of more than 4,000 points using 3D line laser imaging technology (termed the 3D line laser hereafter). This study, sponsored by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) program, is a) to explore the feasibility of using the 3D line laser to accurately and reliably measure rut depth, and b) to quantify the potential …

Assessment Of Asphalt Concrete Pavement Quality By Using Infrared Thermal Imaging Technology, Lisa Y. Chen, Mei-Yun Wang, Chien-Chiao Chao, Wei Lo
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Manholes cause uneven pavements, which affect the quality of pavement services, leading to public criticism in Taiwan. Many manholes are buried beneath pavements to ensure evenness and enhance the usability of pavements for pedestrians. The presence of manholes affects the quality of the asphalt concrete underneath the pavement because then conducting excavations using road construction equipment becomes difficult, ultimately leading to early deterioration of the pavement surfaces. Temperatures can also differ considerably between the manhole and non-manhole locations on asphalt concrete pavement. This study used infrared thermal imaging technology and an analysis of variances statistical method to investigate the differences …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Resilient response of granular aggregate is a key input parameter in all three hierarchical levels of the new MechanisticEmpirical pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), which requires a comprehensive evaluation of resilient modulus (Mr) database(s) for local conditions. To this end, Mr data and other routine properties (gradation, LA Abrasion loss, standard Proctor, and unconfined compressive strength (UCS)) of 105 samples of two different types of aggregate (limestone and sandstone) were analyzed in this study. A total of four stressbased regression models were evaluated using a statistical software package (“SPSS”, Version 17), and material constants (k1, k2, and k3) for these aggregates …
Evaluation Of Steel Bridge Deck Ma Mixture Properties During Construction, Zou Guilian, Zhang Xiaoning, Chung Wu
Evaluation Of Steel Bridge Deck Ma Mixture Properties During Construction, Zou Guilian, Zhang Xiaoning, Chung Wu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Responses of steel bridge deck pavement to environmental and traffic loadings are much different from those of normal highway asphalt concrete pavement or concrete bridge deck. Steel bridge deck pavement generally deals with more challenging conditions, especially orthotropic steel bridges (Seim and Ingham, 2004; Medani et al., 2007; Battista et al., 2008; Cong et al., 2009; Kashefi et al., 2010). Therefore, materials used in constructing the steel deck bridges must possess excellent properties. Guss Asphalt (GA) and Mastic Asphalt (MA) are two types of asphalt concrete primarily used in steel deck bridge pavement construction (Eulitz et al., 2004; Ripke, 2009; …

Hence, hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) is a statistical technique available to researchers that is ideally suited for the study of such cross-level issues. The purpose of this article is to provide market researchers with an overview and detailed description of HLM as well as a practical illustration of its usage. The long-term aim of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is for publicly available services along …
An Idealized Discrete Element Model For Pavement-Wheel Interaction, Yu Liu, Zhanping You, Hui Yao
An Idealized Discrete Element Model For Pavement-Wheel Interaction, Yu Liu, Zhanping You, Hui Yao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In order to design a longer-lasting pavement, it is important for pavement designers to understand the mechanism of the vehicular loading. The main objective of this paper is to present an idealized discrete element modeling of pavementwheel interaction for better understanding traffic loading conditions. The idealized model consists of three parts: a smooth surface, a wheel, and a mass. The smooth surface simulates the pavement surface, while the wheel and mass represent a vehicle wheel and its corresponding mass, respectively. The mechanical behaviors at the interaction surface are simulated through an elastic contact model, a slip model, and a viscous …

Toughness Enhancement Of Airfield Concrete Pavement By Using Short Fiber, Muhammad Mubaraki
Toughness Enhancement Of Airfield Concrete Pavement By Using Short Fiber, Muhammad Mubaraki
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Few efforts have been made to understand the progressive failure of concrete pavements, especially the crack propagation in the concrete materials. More detailed information about concrete material, such as its fracture properties, is required along with the strength to better quantify crack propagation rates of varying concrete mixture proportions and constituents. The susceptibility of concrete pavements to crack growth may be eliminated by adding short steel or glass fibers. Therefore, an experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of adding short fiber, steel or glass, in controlling the fracture energy of concrete. The analysis was conducted for a …

Critical Assessment Of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement Performance Using 40-Years Of Condition Evaluation Data, Yichang (James) Tsai, Yiching Wu, James Lai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Georgia is considered to have one of the best concrete pavement design and materials in the U.S. Designs for joint plain concrete pavement (JPCP) have evolved over time. Analysis of long-term pavement condition data is still very necessary for evaluating the actual performance of different pavement designs and rehabilitation strategies to better understand the actual performance. Since the 1960s, various designs of jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP), including non-doweled pavement on a soil or soil cement base (ND), non-doweled pavement on an improved base (ND-IB), and doweled pavement on an improved base (D-IB), have been constructed at different periods of …

Leading Large-Scale Change In An Engineering Program, Cheryl Allendoerfer, Rebecca Bates, Jennifer Karlin, Ron Ulseth, Dan Ewert
Integrated Engineering Department Publications
While many efforts have been made to improve technical and professional skills in engineering graduates, there has been little comprehensive change in the pedagogy of most engineering education institutions in the U.S. Many of these efforts involve changing only one or two aspects of the curriculum, and therefore are less likely to make significant changes in the student learning outcomes. For better success, engineering curricular changes will need to address the entire education system. In order to see real, sustainable improvement in engineering education practice, both the behaviors of the participants and the systems within which these participants act must …
