Fabrication Of Sub-10 Nm Metallic Structures Via Nanomasking Technique For Plasmonic Enhancement Applications, Stephen Joseph Bauman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One area of nanoscience that has become popular in recent years is the study of optics at the nanoscale. Due to enhanced fabrication techniques, new geometries and improved dimensional resolutions have been allowing the creation of nanostructures for use in this area. Nanoscale geometries cause unique optical effects such as enhancement of the signal’s electric field strength at the surface of a substrate. Specifically, structures separated by nanogaps (10 nm and smaller) have been shown to exhibit strong field enhancement within the gaps. This has opened up the potential for surface enhanced spectroscopies, enhanced absorption for photovoltaics, and improved sensing …

Characterization Of Human Muscle Extracellular Matrix, Lauren Klaire Wilson Jul 2015

Characterization Of Human Muscle Extracellular Matrix, Lauren Klaire Wilson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The performance of extracellular matrix (ECM) biological scaffolds for the treatment of volumetric muscle loss (VML) has shown promising results with regenerating native muscle in animal models and human patients. However, the limitations of these scaffolds include non-specific characteristics based on the original parameters of the muscle that is lost and this is why our group chose to characterize human skeletal ECM. By understanding the characteristics of the native human skeletal ECM, more desired queues for the biological scaffolds being used to treat VML can be provided. Upper limb and lower limb skeletal muscles were commercially obtained, decellularized using common …

Self-Organization Of Protein Fibers In Weightlessness, Dylan Bell Jul 2015

Self-Organization Of Protein Fibers In Weightlessness, Dylan Bell

Theses and Dissertations

It is currently hypothesized and widely believed that the growth of self aggregating protein chains such as amyloid fibers has a direct effect on the function of the human brain. We hypothesized creating self-assembling protein in weightlessness would allow the aggregation to continue for a longer period of time in solution without sedimentation. When protein de-natures and self-organizes into amyloid fibers the effect can be detrimental. Some neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia, are believed to be caused by the collection of these fibers made from proteins such as tau and amyloid-β. For the purpose of this experiment, lysozyme …

Effects Of Normal And Abnormal Loading Conditions On Morphogenesis Of The Prenatal Hip Joint: Application To Hip Dysplasia, Mario Giorgi, Alessandra Carriero, Sandra J. Shefelbine, Niamh C. Nowlan

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

Joint morphogenesis is an important phase of prenatal joint development during which the opposing cartilaginous rudiments acquire their reciprocal and interlocking shapes. At an early stage of development, the prenatal hip joint is formed of a deep acetabular cavity that almost totally encloses the head. By the time of birth, the acetabulum has become shallower and the femoral head has lost substantial sphericity, reducing joint coverage and stability. In this study, we use a dynamic mechanobiological simulation to explore the effects of normal (symmetric), reduced and abnormal (asymmetric) prenatal movements on hip joint shape, to understand their importance for postnatal …

Dartmouth Scholarship

NfnAB catalyzes the reversible transfer of electrons from reduced ferredoxin and NADH to 2 NADP+. The NfnAB complex has been hypothesized to be the main enzyme for ferredoxin oxidization in strains of Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum engineered for increased ethanol production. NfnAB complex activity was detectable in crude cell extracts of T. saccharolyticum. Activity was also detected using activity staining of native PAGE gels. The nfnAB gene was deleted in different strains of T. saccharolyticum to determine its effect on end product formation. In wild-type T. saccharolyticum, deletion of nfnAB resulted in a 46% increase in H2 formation but …

A Developmental Model Of Research Mentoring, Renata A. Revelo, Michael Loui Jun 2015

A Developmental Model Of Research Mentoring, Renata A. Revelo, Michael Loui

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

We studied mentoring relationships between undergraduate and graduate students in a summer undergraduate research program, over three years. Using a grounded theory approach, we created a model of research mentoring that describes how the roles of the mentor and the student can change. Whereas previous models of research mentoring ignored student roles and treated mentor roles as static, our model focuses on the development of the mentoring relationship over time. Our model explains how conflicts can occur if the mentor role does not match the maturity level of the student.

Current Status And Prospect Of Cathode Materials For Lithium Sulfur Batteries, Lan Zhou, Ai-Shui Yu Jun 2015

Current Status And Prospect Of Cathode Materials For Lithium Sulfur Batteries, Lan Zhou, Ai-Shui Yu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Elemental sulfur has been extensively investigated as a promising candidate of cathode material for next generation lithium secondary batteries. However, some troublesome issues, such as the low electric conductivity of sulfur (5×10-30 S·cm-1) and the high solubility of lithium polysulfide intermediates in organic electrolytes, resulting in a low utilization of active material and a redox shuttling of dissolved polysulfide ions between the sulfur cathode and the lithium anode, which eventually leads to a deposition of insoluble and insulating Li2S2/Li2S on the electrode surface and a fast reduction in the specific capacity. …

Research Status And Application Prospects Of Limnpo4 As A New Generation Cathode Material For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Lai-Fen Qin, Yong-Gao Xia, Li-Peng Chen, Hua-Sheng Hu, Feng Xiao, Zhao-Ping Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Olivine-structured lithium manganese phosphate (LiMnPO4) has the following advantages: excellent thermal stability, low cost, high safety and environmental benignity. Importantly, the theoretical energy density of LiMnPO4 is about 20% higher than that of commercialized LiFePO4 due to its higher Li+ intercalation potential of 4.1 V (vs. Li+/Li). Moreover, the high operating voltage of LiMnPO4 is compatible with present non-aqueous organic electrolytes of lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, LiMnPO4 is considered as a next generation cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, LiMnPO4 suffers from poor electronic conductivity and low lithium diffusivity, resulting in …

Preparations And Applications Of Layered Carbon And Layered Carbon-Pbso4 Composite, Shu-Kai Zhang, Hao Zhang, Wei-Hua Xue, Jie Cheng, Wen-Feng Zhang, Gao-Ping Cao, Hai-Lei Zhao, Yu-Sheng Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The layered carbon materials (similar to graphene) have been synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on the cheap catalyst (potassium or sodium carbonate substrate). The layered-carbon- lead sulfate (PbSO4) composite could be prepared by in situ chemical deposition based on the layered carbon. The XRD, SEM and TEM results showed that the layered carbon materials was amorphous carbon layer, and the composite was a compound made of fine lead sulfate grains and layered carbon. Thermogravimetric analysis determined the carbon content in the composite. Adding a certain amount of layered carbon or layered-carbon-PbSO4 composite into negative active materials …

In present work, lithium-rich layered transition metal oxide (LLO) was synthesized by a co-precipitation method in combination with a solid-state reaction. The graphene wrapped Li-rich layered oxide composite (LLO/Gra) was obtained by sintering the LLO/GO composite at 300 oC for 30 min in an air. The morphologies and the electrochemical performances were characterized by means of SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, EIS and charge/discharge tests. The results indicated that the LLOe particles were uniformly wrapped with graphene. The resulting material exhibited better rate capability than that of pristine LLO since the wrapped graphene demonstrated the enhanced electronic conductivity. Accordingly, the …

In this review, we summarize the recent developments of LiFePO4/C cathode. Moreover, the different effects caused by coating methods and carbon sources, as well as the mechanism of carbon coating on the properties of LiFePO4/C are reviewed.

Enhancing Stability Of Pem Fuel Cell Catalysts Via Support Changing, Xiao-Hong Xie, Zi-Dong Wei Jun 2015

Enhancing Stability Of Pem Fuel Cell Catalysts Via Support Changing, Xiao-Hong Xie, Zi-Dong Wei

Journal of Electrochemistry

The Pt/C catalyst with highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles supported on carbon has been widely used as the state-of the-art catalyst in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), while the durability of Pt/C is one of the major barriers for large-scale applications of PEMFCs. Thus, enhancing the stability of Pt/C has been a hot issue in this field. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in enhancing the catalyst stability in the view of support material. The future prospects of the PEMFCs catalyst should focus on adopting more stable supports or strengthening the interactions between Pt and supports.

Pt/C Modified Proton Exchange Membrane For Improved Fuel Cell Performance, Zhi Cui, Chao Wang, Shui-Yun Shen, Feng-Jing Jiang, Jun-Liang Zhang Jun 2015

Pt/C Modified Proton Exchange Membrane For Improved Fuel Cell Performance, Zhi Cui, Chao Wang, Shui-Yun Shen, Feng-Jing Jiang, Jun-Liang Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The property of proton exchange membrane greatly affects the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). During the operation of a PEMFC, the water produced at the cathode, the water vapor from the humidified feed gas and the water migrated by electro-dragging will reach a balance in the membrane and determine the resistance of PEMFC, and thus affect the performance of PEMFC. Normally, the PEMFC performance strongly depends on the relative humidity of the feed gas, and the performance decreases at lower humidity as a result of lower proton conductivity of the membrane. In this paper, we proposed to …

Sacrificial Amphiphiles: Eco-Friendly Chemical Herders As Oil Spill Mitigation Chemicals, Deeksha Gupta, Bivas Sarker, Keith Thadikaran, Vijay John, Charles Maldarelli, George John

Publications and Research

Crude oil spills are a major threat to marine biota and the environment. When light crude oil spills on water, it forms a thin layer that is difficult to clean by any methods of oil spill response. Under these circumstances, a special type of amphiphile termed as “chemical herder” is sprayed onto the water surrounding the spilled oil. The amphiphile forms a monomolecular layer on the water surface, reducing the air–sea surface tension and causing the oil slick to retract into a thick mass that can be burnt in situ. The current best-known chemical herders are chemically stable and nonbiodegradable, …

Variation Tolerant Energy Efficient Design For Ultra Low Voltage Digital Circuits, Preyom Dey Jun 2015

Variation Tolerant Energy Efficient Design For Ultra Low Voltage Digital Circuits, Preyom Dey

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The demand of extremely long battery life for electronic devices is the driving force for modern semiconductor industry in recent years. Supply voltage scaling offers a promising solution for this matter. To control the energy consumption and limit the power dissipation of a circuit, supply voltage should be scaled continually. Threshold voltage should also be reduced to sustain performance and reliability. This scaling of supply and threshold voltage imposes several bottlenecks in ultra-low voltage circuit design. One of the major barriers for ultra-low voltage design is the performance deviation of digital circuit due to supply voltage variation. As technology scales, …

Development Of A Decision-Making Methodology To Design A Water Quality Monitoring Network, J. Keum, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The number of water quality monitoring stations in the USA has decreased over the past few decades. Scarcity of observations can easily produce prediction uncertainty due to unreliable model calibration. An effective water quality monitoring network is important not only for model calibration and water quality prediction but also for resources management. Redundant or improperly located monitoring stations may cause increased monitoring costs without improvement to the understanding of water quality in watersheds. In this work, a decision-making methodology is proposed to design a water quality monitoring network by providing an adequate number of monitoring stations and their approximate locations …
