The Future Of Rural Communities, Alondra B. Perez, Yanliang Zhang (Mentor) Jul 2015

The Future Of Rural Communities, Alondra B. Perez, Yanliang Zhang (Mentor)

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

There is a problem in how modern energy is being distributed throughout the world; less than a quarter of the population have access to energy. Limited energy access is seen in rural areas because of the costs that comes from transporting material and making modern energy resources (solar panels, wind turbines, etc..). Through research on thermoelectric devices, there have been many theories tested in order to improve energy efficiency focusing on easy maneuverable resources. At Boise State’s Advanced Energy Lab, thermoelectric generators are being created and modified which can be used to help communities from rural areas power utilities needed …

Integrity Coded Databases (Icdb) - An Evaluation Of Efficiency, Performance, And Practicality, Jake Rodden, Jyh-Haw Yeh (Mentor), Elmer Duran, Dan Kondratyuk

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Recently, cloud database storage has become an inexpensive and convenient option to store information; however, this relatively new area of service can be vulnerable to security breaches. Storing data in a foreign location requires the owner to relinquish control of their information. This opens the possibility for internal, malicious attacks that can involve the manipulation, omission, or addition of data. Our research tests a potential solution for retaining data as it was intended to be stored (known as integrity) in these cloud-stored databases: by converting the original databases to Integrity-Coded Databases (ICDB). ICDBs utilize Integrity Codes: cryptographic codes created for …

A Study Of The Selective Laser Alloying Of Elemental Titanium And Boron Powder, Yingbin Hu Jul 2015

A Study Of The Selective Laser Alloying Of Elemental Titanium And Boron Powder, Yingbin Hu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

To better understand the selective laser alloying process of elemental titanium and boron powder, theoretic models are created which takes material related, reaction related, laser related, and other affecting factors into consideration. These models do help interpret the corresponding experiment results. In turn, the related experiment results validate the theoretic models created. In practice, the experiments with two different molar ratios of 1:2 and 4:1 between titanium and boron are carried out. The huge amount of energy released because of reaction between titanium and boron during laser irradiation makes it hard to understand and control the alloying process. At the …

Impair-Then-Repair: A Brief History & Global-Scale Hypothesis Regarding Human-Water Interactions In The Anthropocene, Charles J. Vörösmarty, Michel Meybeck, Christopher L. Pastore

Advanced Science Research Center

Water is an essential building block of the Earth system and a nonsubstitutable resource upon which humankind must depend. But a growing body of evidence shows that freshwater faces a pandemic array of challenges. Today we can observe a globally significant but collectively unorganized approach to addressing them. Under modern water management schemes, impairment accumulates with increasing wealth but is then remedied by costly, after-the-fact technological investments. This strategy of treating symptoms rather than underlying causes is practiced widely across rich countries but leaves poor nations and many of the world's freshwater life-forms at risk. The seeds of this modern …

Theses and Dissertations

Preventing damages from flooding is critically important for city managers and planners.Efforts in protecting infrastructure from flooding are often coupled with building hydrologicmodels to provide predictions of what is likely to happen during storm events. As land usechanges, these models must be updated, which is more challenging with sophisticated models. Ateam of researchers from universities in Utah and Wyoming have been developing tools forwater management in the Intermountain West as part of a collaborative NSF research grantcalled CI-WATER. In particular, a free and open source web platform called Tethys has beendeveloped to support the development and hosting of hydrologic web …

Evaluation Of Empirical Prediction Methods For Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spread From The 2010 Maule, Chile, MW 8.8 Earthquake In Port Coronel, Nicole D. Williams Jul 2015

Evaluation Of Empirical Prediction Methods For Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spread From The 2010 Maule, Chile, MW 8.8 Earthquake In Port Coronel, Nicole D. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several decades, empirical formulas have been developed and improved to predict liquefaction and lateral spread based on a database of case histories from observed earthquakes, such as Youd et al. (2002) and Rauch and Martin (2000). The 2010 Maule Chile earthquake is unique first of all because it is recent and was not used to develop recent liquefaction and lateral spread evaluation methods, and therefore can be reasonably used to evaluate the effectiveness of such equations. Additionally, the 8.8 magnitude megathrust event fills a significant gap in the databases used to develop these empirical formulas, which tends …

Hierarchical Composition Of Memristive Networks For Real-Time Computing, Jens Bürger, Alireza Goudarzi, Darko Stefanovic, Christof Teuscher

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Advances in materials science have led to physical instantiations of self-assembled networks of memristive devices and demonstrations of their computational capability through reservoir computing. Reservoir computing is an approach that takes advantage of collective system dynamics for real-time computing. A dynamical system, called a reservoir, is excited with a time-varying signal and observations of its states are used to reconstruct a desired output signal. However, such a monolithic assembly limits the computational power due to signal interdependency and the resulting correlated readouts. Here, we introduce an approach that hierarchically composes a set of interconnected memristive networks into a larger reservoir. …

By automatically creating SRAM arrays, the compiler saves the user time from having to layout and test memory and allows for quick updates and changes to a design. Memory compilers with …

Development Of An Interactive Wave Drag Capability For The Openvsp Parametric Geometry Tool, Michael Jon Waddington Jul 2015

Development Of An Interactive Wave Drag Capability For The Openvsp Parametric Geometry Tool, Michael Jon Waddington

Master's Theses

Minimizing wave drag is critical to successful and efficient transonic and supersonic flight. Area-ruling is the process of managing the cross-sectional area of an aircraft to lessen the wave drag experienced in flight. Effectively calculating the necessary areas for a given aircraft can be difficult, and existing tools for conducting a wave drag analysis often carry limitations in both functionality and availability.

In this work, the author utilized an existing parametric geometry tool named OpenVSP to create an interactive design tool for approximating zero-lift wave drag. Here, the wave drag calculation methodology used in industry for decades is combined with …

Comparison Of Two Wake Models For Use In Gradient-Based Wind Farm Layout Optimization, Jared Thomas, Eric Tingey, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Wind farm layout has a significant impact on the productivity of a wind farm. To ensure that the turbines are placed in the most advantageous arrangement, optimization algorithms are often used during the layout design process. Depending on the wake model used for the optimization, optimizing the layout can be time intensive or potentially inaccurate. In this paper we present a comparison of optimization results using two simple wake models, the FLORIS model and the Jensen model. Results highlight some of the key similarities and differences of layout optimization results when different wake models are used.

Improving Engagement Assessment By Model Individualization And Deep Learning, Feng Li

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation studies methods that improve engagement assessment for pilots. The major work addresses two challenging problems involved in the assessment: individual variation among pilots and the lack of labeled data for training assessment models.

Task engagement is usually assessed by analyzing physiological measurements collected from subjects who are performing a task. However, physiological measurements such as Electroencephalography (EEG) vary from subject to subject. An assessment model trained for one subject may not be applicable to other subjects. We proposed a dynamic classifier selection algorithm for model individualization and compared it to other two methods: base line normalization and similarity-based …

A Vector Channel Based Approach To Mimo Radar Waveform Design For Extended Targets, Amanda Joan Angell Daniel

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Radar systems have been used for many years for estimating, detecting, classifying, and imaging objects of interest (targets). Stealthier targets and more cluttered environments have created a need for more sophisticated radar systems to gain more precise information about the radar environment. Because modern radar systems are largely defined in software, adaptive radar systems have emerged that tailor system parameters such as the transmitted waveform and receiver filter to the target and environment in order to address this need.

The basic structure of a radar system exhibits many similarities to the structure of a communication system. Recognizing the parallel composition …

Characterizing Queue Dynamics At Signalized Intersections From Probe Vehicle Data, Semuel Yacob Recky Rompis

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Probe vehicles instrumented with location-tracking technologies have become increasingly popular for collecting traffic flow data. While probe vehicle data have been used for estimating speeds and travel times, there has been limited research on predicting queuing dynamics from such data. In this research, a methodology is developed for identifying the travel lanes of the GPS-instrumented vehicles when they are standing in a queue at signalized intersections with multilane approaches. In particular, the proposed methodology exploits the unequal queue lengths across the lanes to infer the specific lanes the probe vehicles occupy. Various supervised and unsupervised clustering methods were developed and …

For a given sea state, the opening instant of the control valves …

Life Cycle Assessment Using Argonne Greet Model Of Algae Based Biofuels Produced Using Flash Hydrolysis Process, Andrew P. Bessette Jul 2015

Life Cycle Assessment Using Argonne Greet Model Of Algae Based Biofuels Produced Using Flash Hydrolysis Process, Andrew P. Bessette

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Traditional processing methods of algae to biofuels require dewatering after harvesting of the algae before the lipids can be extracted. This is typically the most energy intensive and therefore the most expensive step. Old Dominion University has successfully utilized a flash hydrolysis process where proteins are solubilized into the liquid phase of product and the remainder lipid-rich, low nitrogen product is separated into a solid phase. The solid phase (lipid-rich) is then an ideal candidate for biofuel feedstock and the liquid phase, or hydrolysate, can be used for coproducts such as a source of nutrients for new batches of algal …

Accuracy Comparison Of Numerical Integration Algorithms For Real-Time Hybrid Simulations, Ganesh Anant Reddy Jul 2015

Accuracy Comparison Of Numerical Integration Algorithms For Real-Time Hybrid Simulations, Ganesh Anant Reddy

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The use of accurate numerical integration algorithms is one of the key factors for a successful real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS). In RTHSs, explicit integration algorithms are preferred more than implicit methods since all calculations need to be completed within a given time step during simulation. Explicit methods require the use of effective stiffness and damping for experimental substructures, which are incorporated into the calculation of the integration parameters. In general, those values that are greater than the expected stiffness and damping of the experimental substructure are used to ensure the stability of simulation. If a rate-dependent and nonlinear experimental substructure …
