Simulation Analysis On Alternatives To Accelerate The Passenger Flow In Security Checkpoints, Maria Luisa Janer Rubio
Simulation Analysis On Alternatives To Accelerate The Passenger Flow In Security Checkpoints, Maria Luisa Janer Rubio
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study consists of discrete event simulation analysis of two alternative solutions designed to mitigate the congestion of passengers in the exit roller area of the security checkpoints. We study the particular case of Orlando International Airport, where this problem is prominent due to the high proportion of passengers who travel for leisure purposes. We developed three simulation models to represent the current configuration and the two alternative solutions. We compare the solutions to the current configuration by observing the response of the passenger throughput and passenger system time when performing a sensitivity on the percentage of passengers throughput. We …

Fundamental Problems In Porous Materials: Experiments And Computer Simulation, Zhanping Xu
Fundamental Problems In Porous Materials: Experiments And Computer Simulation, Zhanping Xu
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Porous materials have attracted massive scientific and technological interest because of their extremely high surface-to-volume ratio, molecular tunability in construction, and surface-based applications. Through my PhD work, porous materials were engineered to meet the design in selective binding, self-healing, and energy damping. For example, crystalline MOFs with pore size spanning from a few angstroms to a couple of nanometers were chemically engineered to show 120 times more efficiency in binding of large molecules. In addition, we found building blocks released from those crystals can be further patched back through a healing process at ambient and low temperatures down to -56 …
Conservation Of Energy Using Variable Frequency Drive For Center Pivot Irrigation Systems In Nebraska, Dilshad Brar
Conservation Of Energy Using Variable Frequency Drive For Center Pivot Irrigation Systems In Nebraska, Dilshad Brar
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The study introduces a novel approach to lower the operating pivot point pressure by varying the motor speed with the help of variable frequency drive (VFD) in contrast to the commonly used fixed speed approach. By varying the speed of motor, the required minimum pivot point pressure can be provided at any required flow rate. This was investigated through a GIS-assisted simulation on 100 randomly selected pivots located in 10 Nebraska counties using high resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) datasets. Center pivot irrigation systems are usually equipped with corner watering attachments like end guns and corner extensions to irrigate additional …

Efficiency Enhancement In Solution Processed Organic And Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells, Zhengguo Xiao
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Solution processed thin film photovoltaic devices are one of the most promising renewable energy sources. Organic solar cells have been intensively studied due to their advantages of light-weight, flexibility and low-cost materials and manufacturing. The organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have recently shown great potential application in solar cells. The PCE increased dramatically from 3.8% in 2009 to a certified efficiency of 20.1% in 2014. In this dissertation, we focus on the efficiency enhancement for solution processed organic and organic-inorganic solar cells.
In Chapter 2, I demonstrated that the crystallinity of the ferroelectric polymer P(VDF-TrFE) at the organic active layer/ electrode …
Mechanical Properties Of Laser-Sintered-Nylon Diamond Lattices, Clayton Neff
Mechanical Properties Of Laser-Sintered-Nylon Diamond Lattices, Clayton Neff
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing offers a manufacturing technique to produce complex geometry prototypes at a rapid pace and low cost. These advantages advocate additive manufacturing for the design and production of cellular structures. Cellular structures are interesting because they contain a large amount of porosity (void space of air) to manifest a lightweight structure. Designs of cellular structures generate a periodic pattern; often of complex geometry, called a lattice.
There has been a significant amount of research to maximize specific stiffness of lattice structures but little to evaluate low-stiffness lattices. Low-stiffness structures benefit energy absorbance through bending of the lattice. This research …
Comparison Of Accuracies In Techniques For Evaluating Wind Power Density, Reuben Kainkwa, John Kumwenda
Comparison Of Accuracies In Techniques For Evaluating Wind Power Density, Reuben Kainkwa, John Kumwenda
Tanzania Journal of Science
Wind power is among important renewable sources of energy. In order to know the magnitude of wind power, appropriate techniques for evaluating it need to be investigated. Apart from the standard formula that can be used to evaluate wind power density at a site there are two more techniques namely power law exponent and Weibull two-parameter density function. However the accuracy of the latter two methods relative to the standard one has not yet been investigated. The main objective of this paper is to compare accuracies of these techniques. The wind power densities were calculated using standard formula, Weibull model …

Developed Pipe Bursting Specifications Using High Density Poly Ethylene (Hdpe), Manoj Mohanraj
Master of Technology Management Plan II Graduate Projects
Pipe bursting is a trenchless method for replacing old deteriorated or under sized pipe by fracturing or splitting. Earlier published pipe bursting specifications do not completely cover the current state of the art and without proper allocation of risks. Specifications are set of written instructions given by the owner to the contractor. The developed Pipe Bursting specification with HDPE will help the owners, contractor, and engineers to carry out a successful burst timely and economically. In this research study, sixteen specifications from various sources were collected. Various agreements and disagreements among these specifications were identified, analyzed, and considered while developing …

Hydrocarbon-Based Fuel Cell Membranes: Sulfonated Crosslinked Poly(1,3-Cyclohexadiene) Membranes For High Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells, Suxiang Deng, Mohammad K. Hassan, Kenneth A. Mauritz, Jimmy W. Mays
Faculty Publications
High temperature fuel cell membranes based on poly(1,3-cyclohexadiene) were prepared by a Polymerization-Crosslinking-Sulfonation (PCS) approach, and a broad range of membrane compositions were achieved using various sulfonating reagents and reaction conditions. Membranes were characterized for their proton conductivity and thermal degradation behavior. Some of the membranes showed up to a 68% increase in proton conductivity as compared to Nafion under the same conditions (100% relative humidity and 120 °C). Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that these membranes are thermally stable up to 200 °C. High proton conductivity and thermal stability, combined with much lower cost as compared to Nafion®, make these materials …

Feasibility Of Wireless Power Transfer For Electrification Of Transportation: Techno-Economics And Life Cycle Assessment, Jason C. Quinn, B. J. Limb, P. Barr
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Integration of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems in roadways and vehicles represents a promising alternative to traditional internal combustion transportation systems. The economic feasibility and environmental impact of WPT applied to the transportation system is evaluated through the development of engineering system models. For a 20% penetration of the WPT technology in vehicles, results show a 20% reduction in air pollutants, 10% reduction in energy use and CO2 emissions and a societal level payback (defined as total cost of ownership savings compared to a traditional vehicle equal to roadway infrastructure) of 3 years. The modeled system covers 86% of all …

The mental health of airline pilots has been a concern for decades. In 2010, the United States Federal Aviation Administration began allowing four types of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to be used by pilots suffering from depression. After a procedural wait period, pilots may be awarded a special issuance of their medical certificates to maintain flight currency. Missing from the literature was any research on consumer’s perceptions of pilots taking antidepressants, along with some other approved medications. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine consumer’s willingness to fly once told that the pilot of their hypothetical …
Level Set Segmentation Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization With Application To Brain Mri, Dimah Dera
Level Set Segmentation Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization With Application To Brain Mri, Dimah Dera
Theses and Dissertations
We address the problem of image segmentation using a new deformable model based on the level set method (LSM) and non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). We describe the use of NMF to reduce the dimension of large images from thousands of pixels to a handful of "metapixels" or regions. In addition, the exact number of regions is discovered using the nuclear norm of the NMF factors. The proposed NMF-LSM characterizes the histogram of the image, calculated over the image blocks, as nonnegative combinations of basic histograms computed using NMF (V ~ W H). The matrix W represents the histograms of the …
Land Use And Water And Soil Management Practices Impacts On Potential Groundwater Recharge In Loess Regions Of South Central Nebraska, Gustavo Bosch-Rubia
Land Use And Water And Soil Management Practices Impacts On Potential Groundwater Recharge In Loess Regions Of South Central Nebraska, Gustavo Bosch-Rubia
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Sustainability of agro-ecosystems must consider land use and water and soil management effects on groundwater recharge. Water flow beneath the plant root zone through the intermediate vadose zone determines potential groundwater recharge. Different land uses, water and soil management practices control deep percolation as a result of changes on evapotranspiration and infiltration. This study of the impact of surface activities on deep percolation was conducted at six locations across Nebraska: Two center-pivot irrigated no-till planting systems fields were compared with one tilled center-pivot irrigated field, a furrow irrigated field with multiple tillage treatments, an eco-fallow dryland farming system, and a …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
We present a numerical model of the ocean that couples a three-stream radiative transfer component with a marine biogeochemical-ecosystem component in a dynamic three-dimensional physical framework. The radiative transfer component resolves the penetration of spectral irradiance as it is absorbed and scattered within the water column. We explicitly include the effect of several optically important water constituents (different phytoplankton functional types; detrital particles; and coloured dissolved organic matter, CDOM). The model is evaluated against in situ-observed and satellite-derived products. In particular we compare to concurrently measured biogeochemical, ecosystem, and optical data along a meridional transect of the Atlantic Ocean. The …

Consensus With Reduced Communication Links Via Relative Neighboring Velocity Information, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen
Consensus With Reduced Communication Links Via Relative Neighboring Velocity Information, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a consensus protocol is introduced to virtually manipulate the communication topology of a given networked multiagent system - without adding physical edges to the graph. The proposed protocol achieves this objective by utilizing not only neighboring agents' relative position information but also their possibly delayed velocity information. It is shown that the stability of the proposed framework is not dependent on the possible time delay present in the neighboring velocity information. In addition, it is formally proven that utilization of the proposed consensus protocol is equivalent to the addition of virtual communication links in a standard consensus …

Adaptive Control With Nonlinear Reference Systems, Tansel Yucelen, Benjamin Gruenwald, Jonathan A. Muse, Gerardo De La Torre
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Although reference systems with linear dynamics are common in the adaptive control literature, they can lead to limitations on the achievable closed-loop dynamical system performance. This is due to the fact that linear reference systems can only approximate the desired closed-loop behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems in narrow regions of the state-space. In this paper, we study a new adaptive control architecture for uncertain dynamical systems based on a nonlinear reference system. It is shown that the system error between the uncertain dynamical system and the nonlinear reference system asymptotically vanishes in steady-state, and its performance is guaranteed during the …

Exploitation Of Heterogeneity In Distributed Sensing: An Active-Passive Networked Multiagent Systems Approach, John Daniel Peterson, Tansel Yucelen, Girish Chowdhary, Suresh Kannan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Most distributed sensing methods assume that the expected value of sensed information is same for all agents - ignoring differences in sensor capabilities due to, for example, environmental factors and sensors' quality and condition. In this paper, we present a distributed sensing framework to exploit heterogeneity in information provided about a dynamic environment using an active-passive networked multiagent systems approach. Specifically, this approach consists of agents subject to exogenous inputs (active agents) and agents without any inputs (passive agents). In addition, if an active agent senses a quantity accurately (resp., not accurately), then it is weighted high (resp., low) in …

Analysis And Design Of Adaptive Control Systems With Unmodeled Input Dynamics Via Multiobjective Convex Optimization, Mario Luca Fravolini, Tansel Yucelen, Jonathan Muse, Paolo Valigi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A challenging problem for adaptive control systems is the accurate characterization of the transient response in the presence of dynamic uncertainties such as a partially known actuator. Considering an actuator modelled as a first order filter with an uncertain control effectiveness and using a projection mechanism for parameters adaptation, we show that the tracking error dynamics behaves as a linear system perturbed by bounded uncertainties. This brings the advantage that the stability analysis can be cast in terms of LMIs so that convex optimization tools can be used for analysis and design. In this framework we propose a mixed linear/adaptive …

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
For advancing lithium-ion battery (LIB) technologies, a detailed understanding of battery degradation mechanisms is important. In this article, experimental observations are provided to elucidate the relation between side reactions, mechanical degradation, and capacity loss in LIBs. Graphite/Li(Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3)O2 cells of two very different initial anode/cathode capacity ratios (R, both R > 1) are assembled to investigate the electrochemical behavior. The initial charge capacity of the cathode is observed to be affected by the anode loading, indicating that the electrolyte reactions on the anode affect the electrolyte reactions on the cathode. Additionally, the rate of “marching” …
Simulation And Validation Of Radio Frequency Heating Of Shell Eggs, Soon Kiat Lau
Simulation And Validation Of Radio Frequency Heating Of Shell Eggs, Soon Kiat Lau
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Finite element models were developed with the purpose of finding an optimal radio frequency (RF) heating setup for pasteurizing shell eggs. Material properties of the yolk, albumen, and shell were measured and fitted into equations that were used as inputs for the model. When the egg was heated by itself, heating tend to be focused at the air cell to result in a “coagulation ring.” The focused heating near the air cell of the egg prevented satisfactory pasteurization of the egg, but deeper analysis of the simulation results offered a new perspective on how non-uniform RF heating could occur in …

Economic And Sustainability Aspects Of Chemical Process Industries By Thermodynamics Analysis, Mahdi H. Alhajji
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Economics and sustainability improvements of some chemical processes are assessed after the retrofits suggested by thermodynamic analysis and energy analyzer. The main objective is to explore the scope of reducing the energy consumption and CO2 emissions for a more sustainable operation in chemical process industries. Thermodynamic analysis is carried out by applying the thermal analysis capability of ‘Column Targeting Tool’ to address the ‘energy intensity,’ and/or the ‘Energy Analyzer’ to design and improve the performance of the heat exchanger network system for process heat integration. CTT is based on the ‘Practical Near-Minimum Thermodynamic Condition’ representing a close to practical …

Much effort has gone into developing fluid biopsies of patient peripheral blood for the monitoring of metastatic cancers. One common approach is to isolate and analyze tumor cells in the peripheral blood. Widespread clinical implementation of this approach has been hindered by the current choice of targeting epithelial markers known to be highly variable in primary tumor sites. Here, we review current antigen-based tumor cell isolation strategies and offer biological context for commonly studied cancer surface markers. Expression levels of the most common markers are quantitated for three breast cancer and two non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) lineage models. These …

Indices of the intra-aneurysm hemodynamic environment have been proposed as potentially indicative of their longitudinal outcome. To be useful, the indices need to be used to stratify large study populations and tested against known outcomes. The first objective was to compile the diverse hemodynamic indices reported in the literature. Furthermore, as morphology is often the only patient-specific information available in large population studies, the second objective was to assess how the ranking of aneurysms in a population is affected by the use of steady flow simulation as an approximation to pulsatile flow simulation, even though the former is clearly non-physiological. …
